    The tinkerer and pc gamer in me wants to recommend the X. In a way.. I sort of am. But Asus don’t get the stars. Only if you have the disposable income to pay for an exorbitantly overpriced mid gen upgrade to an enticing but inherently flawed device. Only if you’re willing to open up your $800 device to tinker around and add electronic lubricant to the horrible squeaky triggers and Dpad that so many are experiencing. Again… $800 device. Asus has a deplorable track record with customers.. bullying, gaslighting, and strong-arming them into believing the issues with the original Ally weren’t the fault of Asus the self. It took numerous YouTube exposés to get them to change ANYTHING, and in the end they still do the bare minimum. The SD card is hopefully a thing of the past on the X. Asus used a flawed card reader in the original Ally then blamed a million other issues instead of admitting they sourced a bad part. If you buy this know you will probably have to deal with an issue related to Asus cutting corners with bad build quality. I added electronic lubricant to my squeaky right trigger 3 times and it’s still bothering me. I called asus to get a replacement trigger, and they told me to send the whole unit in for replacement because there “were no replacement parts available.” All the while they sell replacement triggers for $40-$50 on an obscure website. No thanks. My dpad squares like crazy but it is not easily accessible like the triggers. I’d have to take out the main board to get to it. Again. $800 product. This company has a long way to go when it comes to trust.

    qc hasn’t improved. Joy sticks, get stuck in one direction out of the box with a huge line of dead pixels down the middle of the screen.

    Warranty scam

    Just bought an ally x a month ago. It’s having controller issues. Sent it in for repair. Asus claimed it was water damage while the screen worked power and volume worked so water damage is unlikely.. they want to charge 520 dollars for repair. Since then I’ve looked into it and they are always scamming people with warranty claims specifically with the rog Ally devices. Watch the gamer nexus video on asus. Do not buy asus.

    I really had high hopes for this handheld gaming computer. I travel alot for work so I was excited for something small and portable I could bring with me to kill some time in the hotels. I have a Nintendo Switch I bring with me now, but then the kids do not have anything to play when I am gone. We have multiple xboxes as well so the idea of having a larger aray of game options on the road was appealing. Trouble started right off the bat for me on this device. I found the user interface to be hard to use and very glitchy. For example, when trying to search for games to download, it was hard to be able to type anything. You can use the analog stick as the cursor and the trigger to click; however when you do so it only puts the cursor in the box and never opens the keyboard. With it being a touchscreen you can touch the text box and the keypad opens. I found that in Steam, the keyboard would open for a second and then re close over and over until I took it out of full screen and it finally opened and stayed opened. Nuances like this riddled the desktop interface and became more than an annoyance. Once I was able to get games downloaded, the experiance was slightly better.... depending on the game. First I downloaded GTA 5. This opened and was playable with the gamepad immediatly. The graphics were great, there was no lag and everything played as smooth as it does on our XBOX. Next I downloaded Disney Dreamlight Valley. This is where things went south again. This is my favorite game to play on my Switch. It was completely unplayable on the ROG. We spent hours and hours trying to set up the controls to make it playable with the game pad but failed in the end. We were only able to make the character walk and nothing more. We even tried making custom profiles for controls based on the PC controls. It could be played in desktop mode in theory, but the keyboard would take up most of the screen. I found this to be odd that it wouldn't run on the gamepad as it was an XBOX Live game. Many people use a controller similar to this gamepad to play, even on pc. This is the only game that did not automatically work with the Gamepad that we tried. Unfortunately it was extremely dissapointing. I also downloaded Tomb Raider. This game really showed off how great the graphics truley are and I was able to test out the rumble feature. All and all it played fairly smoothly. The audio is pretty decent, but do note, it does not get super loud. I do however like how light the device is. It has fantastic cooling abilities. The fans are quiet and very effective. I never once had it get hot on me while playing, even when plugged in. Battery life was great as well. I was able to play for hours without having to plug it back in. The stand that it came with did however leave more to be desired. It is made of either very light plastic or paper. It feels like something that was more of a packging aide than an actual stand. For the cost of this device, something more permanant and heavier duty would have been nice. If you can get used to the desktop interface issues and work arounds and avidly play games that are compatible with the gamepad, this device could be for you. Unfortunately its just not for me.

    So far out of the 2 games I’ve tried playing, zero have downloaded properly. Can’t login to Diablo 4 because battle.net doesn’t register properly. Minecraft Dungeons wont let you login at all. Probably going to return this

    Good Device, bad support/warranty

    Device from a specs and usage perspective is fine. I enjoyed the device for approximately 4 months until an issue developed with the joy sticks. They started to develop a clicking a popping when spinning the sticks that was distracting when gaming. I attempted to have the device serviced by Asus under warranty. However they claimed to not be able to reproduce the issue even though the Best Buy rep who helped me with the service request could. It seems like ASUS is still not properly honoring warranty repairs and scamming customers. Do not purchase this device if you expect ASUS to actually warranty the unit. Buy it used and get a third party warranty protection as ASUS will not help you.

    Defective rumble/vibration

    Love the device, except the defective rumble/vibration. The left side is nearly non-existent (barely feel anything) while the right is incredibly loud. The feel of the rumble on the right is also just "wrong" like the motor is about to break from the case. I love the device but don't want to take my chances missing the Best Buy return window (15 days).

    Its fine if you know what youre doing. Just keep in mind at the end of the day its a handheld. Getting games to run at 60 FPS is going to require some serious graphics downgrading.

    Bought and returned next day. it’s essentially a $300 laptop in a “gaming handheld” form. If you can guess how that would handle and look…. Save your money!!! You can get a very good gaming laptop for the same price and even upgrade it. Not worth almost $1000 dollers after tax my ipad handles the new call of duty better then it did :/

    As an owner of the original Ally, I was eager to see how Asus learned from their mistakes to improve on already solid device (sans some well-known issues). Asus has improved the cooling and moved the SD Card slot to improve reliability. I also appreciate the added USB-C slot, because sometimes it's just easier to manage dongles, charging and HDMI adapters when you have more than one USB-C to work with. The previous Ally also had issues with negotiating USB-C power delivery which also seems solved in this iteration, as the Ally will run full power with any of my chargers plugged in. Holding the Ally X is a pleasing experience, and is easier to hold with the larger grips, and the M buttons on the rear have been moved slightly further away, greatly reducing the risk of accidental presses. The shoulder buttons also feel much better, especially the triggers. The joysticks also have a nicer feel. The face buttons I also have no complaints with. However, the much larger battery has added weight which means you might fatigue earlier from holding it. A minor tradeoff though for the larger battery. While we're on the battery... battery life is also noticeably improved, thanks in no small part to the larger battery, but clearly because of some other apparent optimizations, because it performs better than the original Ally, while lasting longer. The speakers and screen seem to be largely on par to the previous Ally, and that is to say they are great, and definitely provide a wow factor. However, I initially though the sound wasn't as good, and sounded hollower and tinnier compared to the OG Ally. A recent Dolby driver update I think improved this and has eased my fears this is a hardware problem and likely just needed some software tweaks. The Armoury Crate software makes for a nice landing for manging the Ally and your games. You will still need to bounce out to Windows from time to time to manage Windows updates, and any other programs. Oddly, Rewasd, which I had previously used for PS Remote Play, does not recognize the built-in controller as an Xbox controller, or any other standard controller, so the keys cannot be mapped or customized. This is a major bummer and I don't know if it's Asus that changed something, or related to a recent update where Rewasd added support for the OG Ally. In short, having a portable handheld Windows gaming computer is great. And the Ally X is clearly the best one on the market. It may only be an iteration on the previous Ally, but where that one fell short, this one nailed.

    Best Buy open box is a scam!

    Best Buy said it was opened box excellent! But the screen was scratched and unit dirty. I would advised to stay away from best buy open recommendations as they clearly don’t inspect the items.

    Bad Joystock Design

    The left and right joysticks have a popping / clicking sound to them that you can hear and feel everytine you rotate of move from left to right quickly. This affects the precision of shooting games like call of duty and as much as i love the handheld, i cant deal with this. Ive looked up and this was a problem with the previous model and is still a problem with the X
