Customers often highlight the ROG Ally X's overall performance, improved battery life, and ideal balance of portability and power as key strengths. The device also receives positive feedback for its screen quality, game compatibility, storage capacity, ample RAM, efficient heat dissipation, and acceptable noise levels. While the device is considered a bit heavy, the primary concern appears to be the user experience with the operating system.

Love the the ROG ally X and have easily become my favorite handheld. The ROG Ally X is the best portable gaming gadget available. Its 80-Wh battery, 24GB RAM, and 1TB SSD help it to surpass the Steam Deck and Legion Go. Windows 11 guarantees complete game compatibility while the revised grips and D-pad improve comfort. This is the one to get if you seek power, battery longevity, and adaptability.

The Asus Rog Ally X is awesome. It fits my needs perfectly. 45 plus FPS on AAA games just released at native 1080p and low to medium settings. I use this while traveling on planes. Good enough batter for 2 hours plus without power, but most planes have an AC outlet and I have done 6 hour single player gaming sessions on airplanes that make that long flight feel like half the time. Also for a quick gaming session on my couch in the living room while my family uses the TV for something else is great. Windows 11 on a device this size is not ideal, but I knew what I was getting into and frankly it has been better than I expected. The touch screen and mouse controls via the right control stick are adequate to navigate and make things happen inbetween launching games. Overall I love this thing and I am using it way more than I expected. I highly recomend this device if you travel for work like I do. Also I have a gaming laptop but plane seats are so small now, the laptop screen has to be angled down and its not ideal to play games. In some of the economy seats the laptop screen has to be so angled down that you cannot see the screen at all. This divice can be held with your hands resting on the airplane fold down tray regardless of the seat size.

Let me start off by saying that I have had every handheld gaming PC since the GPD Win 2 up the the newer GPD, Aya, and onenetbook devices. Out of the main more popular devices like the Go and Deck, the new Ally X hits all the marks of a great handheld gaming PC. It just works, and works very well and well worth the price. The bigger battery is the main selling point for me but the extra ram is a nice bonus which helps with some of the more demanding games I play. No regrets and no buyers remorse here.

Overall, with first impressions on the debacle of the LCD Steam Deck (/w official dock), versus ASUS ROG Ally X (/w iVANKY 8-in-1 dock, really 6-in-1): The ASUS ROG Ally X is a clear winner in terms of screen, specs and performance. The sheer difference is the out of pocket cost alone at full retail price indifference of years. ASUS clearly made a product that was to be competitive with full fledged desktop computers that can play close to any game within reason for it being a handheld. The Steam Deck official dock has been nothing but a hassle with a bug in the HDMI tv connection requiring the dock to be unplugged manually from the AC outlet and to have my TV power cycled for it to send the signal through. The iVANKY dock with Steam Deck or ASUS ROG Ally X has been a blessing in itself so far along with its better positioned device ports. Distros also seem to resonate well in subtle ways with the Ally X better than the Steam Deck. BIOs comparison would say the ASUS has a way more advanced looking GUI and feature set than from what I remember the Steam Deck. If you're looking for a device thats on the go in afforadbility, the Steam Deck is a fun option, however if you want it all as well the best in class experience, the ROG Ally X is the way to go. Afterthoughts: I imagine despite the numerous drawbacks of the Original ROG Ally (not the X), it still even would be something I would've considered purchasing now. 11 is not your friend, run. It took a minute to go through the latest secure boot wumbo to get what I wanted running.

Pros: Windows. It's a full laptop in a different form factor. Plays AAA games with solid performance for a handheld. Elden Ring/God Of War: steady 50-65 FPS with medium/low settings and 720p in game settings. Upscaling on device gives very reasonable representation of 1080p and RSR, AFMF, etc, make a good difference. Cleverly made device. Halo 4 in MCC: 90-120 FPS on max settings. Halo CE Remaster with it's clunkier graphics overhaul still hits 80-100 on max settings. Fable Anniversary ran locked at the games' cap of 62 FPS. Great build quality. Feels sturdy and like a premium product. Cons: I feel as though it is worth bearing in mind that this is really a 1.5 generation product for Windows. I am very excited for the next full generation and potential of the Windows handheld. That being said: I spent hours of each day for three days configuring, running updates, understanding better what everything in Command Center does, and finding settings for each game. I think someone looking for a console experience or just to turn on and go might be turned off by this. Now that I've done that, it feels worth the time. I'm not sure how a Steam Deck would run some AAA games with what I've had to do to this. Turning off Core Isolation and Virtual Machine Platform does increase performance, with the security risk. Your call. Small things in Armoury Crate; stick movements that don't make total sense on what they select. I had better luck with the touchscreen in general. Opening AC has crashed God Of War during play, every time. Wish main triggers had just a bit more snap. Feels spongy on shooters. The $30 ergonomic grips for Switch feel better. The occasional crashes and finagling required for Windows computers. To me, not worth upgrading if you own any of the other major handhelds. Not a substantial enough boost in performance. If you didn't own a handheld, like me, I think it was worth the extra money. Five stars? Yes. It is the best machine that they knew how to make and I appreciate ASUS taking a step back and patching it up. For me, the extra $150 and extra tinkering time has resulted in a machine that outperforms its competitors. I've also already had some great fun with it.

ROG ALLY X. There are numerous reviews *almost* all unanimously positive compared to last year's model. So, I'm just gonna try to keep this short and sweet. I really like this device, I think everything about it has been updated well and of course like pretty much any other refresh I can think of this is probably the device that should have came out last year. Major update areas include ergonomics, speakers, joysticks, d pad, IO (2 USB C ports), cooling & Armory Crate software. Once again we're getting an incredible device for less than $1,000 compared to what's available overseas in a package you can take anywhere with you and now thanks to a much bigger 80 whr battery I don't have to search for my wall charger all of the time. I can play whatever I want (within reason), I can emulate whatever I want (including PS3/X360) thanks to the APU, additional faster RAM (24gb 7500mhz) and the fact that the battery actually makes it worth doing compared to the last model or lack thereof ability on my Steam Deck. I do think the $100 upcharge from last year's model is fair given what they have done here however it would have been a lot cooler had Asus left it at the same price and earned some goodwill over recent warranty drama and the fact the first Ally is only a year old. I really enjoy the fact also of having the ability to dual boot into Steam OS and have essentially a super Steam Deck thanks to Bazzite OS. If I want to play something like Fortnite with my kid I can do that on Windows and then flip it back for my single player RPG with a console-like experience. There is no doubt that there will always be the next biggest, best thing in the hardware space, but I am more okay with owning something like this knowing AMD are always working on AI upscaling methods and AI frame generation to keep things playable and devices in your hands much longer than in the past. If you're somebody on the fence I would absolutely watch some videos and then wait for a sale or look up Best Buy open box models. Whatever the next model holds I would just like to see an AMOLED panel with VRR and hall effect sticks.

I did a lot of research before purchasing this item, from steam deck, to the logitec one, all of them are really good and each one has its own specific thing that people would gravitate towards, stream deck would be the screen, for me it was the amount of ram this beast has, every game i have throw in it has work fine from 60-30fps no problem, even god of war ragnarok was playing on a steady 40fps on medium settings, dont expect the power of a desktop but you can definitely play most of the game that are out now while youre on a trip, battery would last about 3-4 hours if you do nonestop gaming. Charges fast, would definitely recommend pairing with the rog headphones. Been having it for about 4 months so far no issue

This thing is great. No issues running games. I mostly play at 720p and low settings to make sure I have >60 fps but it you don't mind 30-50 this can play most things at 1080p on high. This was a life saver on a long haul flight to Tokyo.

Best balanced handheld I've used so far

I've been through quite a bit of handhelds. For a long time I've kept the Ayaneo 2s, but I've gone through the Geek 1s, 1st gen Ally, and OneXFly. All same processor but drastically different experiences. I liked the Ally but strayed away from it due to 16gb ram only option, which just isn't enough sharing with VRAM and OS, and didn't like not being able to push to 30w if I wanted to on battery. However, AMD drivers have come an a long way and are releasing features that make any handheld run games at very decent frames per second, even on AAA games. I'm running most games with at least 40-45fps, with an average of maybe 60 fps across the board (which looks great on a freesync screen). I am beyond impressed with it in general, and pairing that up with an increased RAM, double battery life, and freesync screen on the Ally x gives you a pretty near perfect handheld device that provides a new, unheard of play longevity and performance balanced experience. It is still a windows device, so unless you are privy or willing to learn how tweak as necessary, it can be cumbersome to nail down, but there are plenty of youtube guides on how to optimize this. regardless, out of the box setup is still not quite there. Steamdeck takes the lead on that console-like experience still, but bazzite could close that gap soon on the ally x. In terms of controls, the dpad is better from previous gen, but I do find myself hitting diagonals on accident due the saturn-like controller design. So platforming can be finnicky, but nothing that I can't eventually get used to. The LB/RB buttons are stiffer and quicker to activate, which does feel a bit awkward to press, but again, nothing too serious. Ayaneo devices still take the crown for dpad and shoulder buttons, but analog stick experience is identical to Ayaneo's hall sensors and XYBA buttons are still the best above all devices I've tried. Would've loved to see 2tb SSD at this price point. I ended up swapping with a spare that I had anyway, but if you're looking for expanded storage, you're really looking at a $900+ device. This is now my go-to for handhelds. Now what to do with my Ayaneo 2s. lol

Absolutely amazing handheld. The performance is phenomenal, even with newer AAA games. The battery life is great too. The only downside in my opinion is the weight. It is a bit heavy and pretty bulky, especially if you put a case on.

So I was looking to buy a nintendo seitch 2 or steam deck(but cost too much and outdated specs now.) this by far is the best got mine with 24gb of Ramand I cqn finally play most of the games I own on steam over 400. I do t mind if higher specs drains the battery faster. The fact that I can play my games I am happy. I do t always have time to get my gaming laptop connected to my 85” tv to play games. This its just simple and easy!! If you can buy this buy it worth it!! I got it with 1TB drive and replaced it with an extra samsung 990 Pro 2TB drive I had prdered on launch and have not used it. Things load faster. Fyi replacing the drive was EASY!!! Also did not have to unplug the backside ribon cable from the rest. Its long enough to move to the side. Did not have to remove the otiginal tape.

Overall I am extremely happy with my ally x. However, this won't be the case for everyone. Personally, I didn't have a computer, laptop or anything PC and I had not for a few years. I did already have a respectable steam library and already had game pass ultimate because I do have an xbox. Had an itch to dive into my steam games. Titles like NFS shift that aren't really available unless you have the physical media are otherwise unplayable. Revisiting games like that has been a blast. They run and look great. The ally x is also great for emulation. Now where some potential buyers should pay attention: as it stands windows 11 is clunky at best as a handheld interface. So be prepared for a learning curve or plan to use peripherals (keyboard/mouse). If you are reasonably tech savvy you will likely enjoy using this and making it your own. If the previous is not true this is likely not for you. You can do just about anything on this that you could on a laptop or desktop. For me being able to mod koved titles like the mass effect trilogy is amazing. If you take away anything from this review just know this, if you are technologically challenged then wait for this tech to develop a bit more or buy something else. If you are comfortable tinkering, navigating and problem solving in a PC platform then make the purchase. If you do buy, unbox, plug in, power up and make sure you update everything; windows updates, armoury create, Asus updates. If you don't so updates you will run into problems. It won't take long with decent wi fi or via Ethernet if you have a compatible dock.

As someone who lives full time in a camper, this thing is great! When I need a computer, I have one, when I want to game, this can do it. It can emulate anything from the old school NES to as modern as a switch, plus having steam is awesome! I had to buy a dock for it, and a wireless mouse and keyboard, both bought from Amazon, in order to hook this up to my TV, but for the price I paid I would say it was worth every penny! Only downside is trying to figure out all the settings for gaming. As someone who just likes to download and play, it was a bit difficult to get my PS5 controller to work. And I know I can change things for better quality gaming, but I just don't know how to do it. It does work right out of the box though!

Amazing Portable Gaming Experience! The ROG Ally X has been a total game changer for me. Being able to take my favorite games into bed or on the road is incredible—I honestly wish I bought this years ago instead of a full PC setup. The performance is smooth, and the portability makes gaming so much more flexible. I’ve also connected it to my TV, and playing on the big screen has been just as much fun. Between handheld and docked play, I’ve put in hours of gaming already and couldn’t be happier. If you’re looking for a powerful, versatile gaming device, this is it.

I really like the flexibility of being able to use any platform I want. I can even install SteamOS on this device and turn it into a Steam Deck. The battery life is solid, the screen looks great, and Asus ROG’s driver support is excellent. I also recommend getting a dbrand case for full protection. The Thunderbolt 4 connectivity is another big plus — I often use it with an external display, and it works perfectly.

Honestly, I picked this up as a “ehh, I have nothing else to upgrade but craving new technology” buy, and it has turned into my favorite find since the original PSP, seriously. First, I chose this for the freedom that comes with Windows for those who are proficient with Windows. I understand the Steam Deck owners’ view. I purchased this solely to play Xbox cloud gaming, so I wasn’t worried about the battery life or performance others look to. I was afraid these pc handhelds would be big and uncomfortable, and the buttons would feel cheap. Good news, they feel better than a console. So streaming games to this surprisingly feels local. I am shocked technology has evolved to this. Then I tried GeForce Now. 1080p games on ultra settings streamed, so the device does no heavy lifting. I got a peek at the future with this thing… and it’s still all the flexibility of it being a full windows pc. Also, i do have a wifi 6e router which is important consideration for game streaming.

It didnt come with a charger, but Im pretty sure I bought the Fair version, and it does say with fair you may not get a charger so no biggie. Got a new one in the store that day. I have probably put about 200+ hours on it since I got it a month and a half ago - I know, no life. - But this device is really versatile, I haven't had an issue with one game yet and I've thrown all kinds of AAA games, New gen games, old, big, small, etc. It runs everything. Its nice to have the option of changing the RAM size, meaning you can give more RAM to the system or to the graphics depending on what youre playing and what it requires. This device is worth it if youre an avid PC gamer but sometimes just wanna sit on the couch or lay in the bed at night. Also nice that you have the option to change the SSD too and you arent just stuck with 1TB. Just an FYI, Girlfriends WILL get jealous, be prepared.
