    Couldn't believe my carpets...

So I currently rent and as anybody knows that rents, more often than not the carpet is a light color and not the greatest quality. It makes sense. So with our off-white carpet is a lot of stains from spills or just tracking in debris in a city that rains A LOT! I was tossing around the idea of renting a Rug Doctor or just buying a Bissell carpet shampooer. I have had 2 different Bissell and a Hoover shampooer in the past. The Bissell worked great! I knew that is what I wanted. Not wanting to spend the cash right now I decided to just rent a Rug Doctor from the store. After seeing what it cost to rent, and having the 24 hour time limit for it, I decided I would just suck it up and buy it. Ill just make payments on my college tuition this semester. I researched the Rug Doctor Deep Clean for about a week. Reading reviews from multiple sites, watching videos, and most importantly looking for the cheapest price so I could price match with Best Buy. Save money AND get reward points. Well turns out Best Buy still had the cheapest one I could find so it worked out anyway. Anyway, back to the machine. I read a lot of reviews on how good it cleaned. I also read some bad reviews on the tank leaking and the fact that the tanks are small. I weighed the pros and cons and decided to buy one. There is always the return policy if it didn't meet all the hype. Here is where I became a believer... Upon opening the box it was ready to go. Really. I didn't have to assemble one part. I took off the shrink wrap and filled the tanks. I looked for flimsy or cheap parts and there really isn't any. The tanks are very easily labeled and the lid to the fresh water tank has a built in cap that serves as a measuring cup for solution. I thought that was very cool. Everything on the machine is labeled and you really don't have to do much. The dirty water tank doesn't have a lot of hard to reach crevices in it either where some machines collect dirt that you can't get out. A simple rinse and it looked brand new again. I will say that it does leak a little water if you fill the clean water tank with HOT water. I mean the heat is going to expand and I guess it has to go somewhere. It seemed to get a lot better the more I filled it. I spilled a little my first 2 times and it didn't seem to happen anymore after that. My water get VERY hot so I just turned it down a little. Also, the tanks are small. I live in a small apartment so it doesn't bother me, but a large house would get kind of annoying after awhile. Once you see how it cleans though, you won't care. And it is super easy to fill/empty the tanks. So there I was. I mixed the solution and fired it up! It took a few trigger pulls to get the solution though the hoses to the floor but once it did it actually performed beautifully. It was easy, not as loud as my Bissell, the water was constant, and best of all it sucks up about 70% of the water you spray. The carpets are damp, but they dried in about an hour or two. The tanks may be different sizes also, so lets say the 70% figure I gave may not be that accurate. I did one pass with the shampoo and then one pass with just water to rinse. I did notice that I was going though a lot of solution. I was going slow like I had to with my old Bissell. I sped up my pace and I covered a lot more carpet per tank and it still cleaned as good. I did half my living room and the results were night and day. Just a simple shampoo and rinse. In fact I don't even know if I needed the rinse. I'm kinda weird and didn't want any shampoo on the carpet so I rinsed anyway. I could visually see the difference. I do not even have pets or anything. Just tracking in stuff. After ordering some take-out (shopping makes you hungry) I finished the living room. This is where I really became a believer. All the spots, GONE! Like seriously looks like new carpet. I actually tried to find a stain or dirt or anything. I could not believe it. I figured people just exaggerated in the reviews. By the way, how do you get free stuff to write reviews? I always see people post that they received a free product in exchange for a review. I want to do that! If you are a company reading this, send me free stuff. I'll tell you all about what I think. So anyways... There is this brush on the bottom that goes back and forth before hitting the roller. It is supposed to clean all sides of the carpet. I figures it was this cheap addition they added to have another selling point and jack the price up. Well turns out that little brush works. The carpet is so soft. I didn't care if it was still wet. I kept walking back and forth because I couldn't believe it. I even made my roommate fell it. He thought I was crazy. He also couldn't believe how well it cleaned. His next words were "Can I borrow that to do my room?" To recap, this machine works better than I ever expected it to. Will it break it a few months or years from now? I don't know. I bought the $25 2-year warranty from Best Buy if it does. All I know is that I never expected to get excited over carpet shampooing and this machine has done just that for me. Buy one. Buy one for a friend. Heck, buy me another one. Its worth it. Actually buy some shampoo. It comes with 9oz of solution which is 3 tanks. The provided sample solution is what I used so I can only image what their more expensive bottles do.

I purchased this because of the Rug Doctor name and the reviews that it received. Though I have to admit that the performance I received from the machine doesn't match videos that I've seen of the machine in action. You will find videos of very dirty carpets and see the Rug Doctor leaving a clean path bringing what would normally be a candidate for the trash back to serviceable condition. While my carpets at home are nowhere near this condition I do have an area rug that may come close that description. I had two places where I wanted to test. One was a stain left by some juice (that I really have to look for to notice, but it bothers the heck out of the wife to point she wants to have hardwood installed in the room). The second was the area rug that guards the exit to the patio. This was actually a leftover from the previous owners of the house and we've not done anything with it over the summer and who knows if the previous owners ever cleaned it. Even with pre-treatment left for about 20 minutes the stain remains. It is a bit lighter and the area around it is cleaner. It did not get rid of the stain even after multiple passes. With the area rug I could tell a different between the cleaned and not cleaned areas. But I do not believe that the rug has returned to it former glory as it seems to still be dingy. Just not as dingy as before having half of it cleaned. I also found the carpet cleaner to be very light while being used (not so much when trying to lug it from the front porch after delivery to the inside of the house). Even when it is filed with water it just doesn't seem to have any weight to it. Anyone that has rented a cleaner in the past will know how much heft it has when your using it. This doesn't feel much different than using a vacuum. At this point I don't know exactly how I feel about this. Filling and emptying tanks is very easy. And that's a good thing since you will be filling that tank a lot. The water does not go very far. I've yet to do an entire room or even an entire hallway. But just for my test I used two full loads of clean water. Considering your supposed to rinse after cleaning as well, you will have lots of trips. And if you use the extra sprayer in the back of the unit you will make even more trips on top of that. Speaking of the dual spray on the unit. The rear extra sprayer can be turned off. The unit also comes with hand tools for furniture and stairs. I won't be using this since i have spot cleaner as well. The handheld tools that come with it has no power head. It will simply spray solution and vacuum it up. While the spot cleaner that I have has a powered scrubber on it. So there's no reason for me to downgrade with the cleaning and the accessories will be heading off to the attic never to be seen, heard, or spoken about again. With that said. The accessories, while having their own accessory rack to store them are not meant to always be on the cleaner. There's a place to hang the rack while cleaning to keep them nearby when you need them. But keeping them on full time would only result in frustration as they would get in the way of anything you actually want to get done with the cleaner. The amount of water that cleaner picks up left a bit to desired. As I mentioned before I went through two full loads of water. I only had to empty the unit once. Since the tank holds one gallon and I used two tanks full. That means that a gallon of water stayed in a somewhat small area of the carpet. But, this could be a learning curve on my part. I will add that the areas of the carpet that I did use the cleaner on stayed wet through most of the next day as well (this was during a Midwest winter). At this point I leaning on the side of keeping it. I will need to try it out on a different area that has a different carpet style first. I will say that it seems to perform better than past carpet cleaners I've owned in the past (aka: Hoover and Bissell) that were in the same price range. And the water that it did get up was very dirty. But then again I don't know how hard it would be for almost anything to make a dirty carpet wet, vacuum up the water that it did put down, and not come up with dirty water.

This is my 4th carpet cleaner in the last 8 months. I got 2 puppies last November and they have been the bane of my existence. They have taught my well behaved 2 older dogs how to lift their legs and even though they are all "fixed" they still will do it if they smell urine from one of the other dogs. GRRRRR! The salesman at Best Buy suggested this one because his girlfriend and another vendor rep bought it and loved it. Since the other 3 hoover cleaners broke (literally the brush fell out, stopped working, leaked, etc) all doing the things that I was warned about in the reviews that I read about them before buying, I thought I'd just splurge and buy the rug doctor. This machine is bigger and heavier so you feel like its going to do a great job. All the parts are plastic which gave me a feeling of hesitation when I pulled it out of the box. Even so, the machine is heavier and the size of a very large upright vacuum. It is not difficult to work and "Seemed" like it was really doing a good job with lots of sucking action on the bottom. The carpet dries very fast, so I was happy about it. Here lies the problem and why I didn't give it a higher rating. When I find a spot, I place hot water in the tank and add the solution. I then run the machine over the spot (picking up any fresh urine that might be still there, then I run the scrubber and soap over the spot and still assuming that the machine is sucking up all the fluid. I probably use this machine once a week (the dogs have gotten better) and this morning I caught my oldest dog mid stream and pulled out my machine. I sucked up the fresh stuff, and proceeded to spray, such, scrub...etc. While I noticed the dirty water in the tank, I got down on my hand and knees to do the smell test and was very upset to realize that it still smelled! I went over it again, and smelled and it still smelled! (the dog had only started and I caught him and through him outside so it wasn't that wet in the first place) After that I went around to several of the places that I had cleaned in the last few weeks and they all smelled too! Now I'm wondering if the Rug doctor pet cleaning solution is just not strong enough or if my machine just scrubs the top of the carpet (it always looks so nice when i'm done) but is not picking up anything that has soaked in. I stated above that this might have potential. I'm going to try a different solution in my tank and see if that picks up better. I will add that this cleans up easy and I really like that and it fits in my closet, so even though its big, its still able to fit in a regular closet.

Almost Perfect with ***1 Major Flaw***

This machine is incredible for many reasons (listed below) but possesses one major flaw that everyone should know about prior to purchasing. This machine is meant for homes with small area rugs, DO NOT PURCHASE if your house is carpeted or even if you have a few rooms that are carpeted! (Explanation below) This machine is great for many reasons: 1. Comes fully assembled. 2. Very sturdy build quality with 2 yr warranty. 3. Lightweight (22lbs) and easy to carry. 4. Cleans carpets/rugs very well. 5. Easy to use and clean. 6. Compacts to store. ***However, it has a major flaw that was intentional by design and is why I gave it 3 stars. You would not know about this until you brought it home and used it. Flaw: The size of the clean water/soap and waste water tanks are quite small (about 1 gallon each) and they need to be refilled/emptied often. I cleaned an area rug 12'x15' (quite small) and had to refill the soap and water tank/empty the dirty water 5 times! Each time soap has to be added, which is why I said this was done on purpose. You will end up buying bottle after bottle of Rug Doctor Soap as a result ($20/bottle). Essentially, don't buy for anything more than cleaning area rugs.

My Family broke out our Hoover Carpet Cleaner on a fall afternoon to clean the house. The furniture has been moved and the carpets were vacumed, however the Hoover seemed to have broken down and wouldn't suck up any water so here we are ready to steam clean with no steam cleaner. We quickly ran down to Best Buy and found this Rug Doctor unit and brought her home...We did leave the Hoover at Best Buy for recycling. This Rug Doctor blows the Hoover out of the water, they are not even in the same category. What I had to go over 2-3 times with the Hoover would get picked up upon the first pass with the rug doctor. Some of the features that make this a must purchase for anyone looking for a steam cleaner are: 1)Only have to pass over Carpet once 2) The handle has multiple angles to make maneuvering a breeze 3) Form factor is very compact Some things that could be better but can be lived with. 1) The accessory management could be better 2) The Reservoirs could be bigger 3) The width could be longer Overall I'm extremely pleased with this unit and would give it my highest recommendation for a carpet shampooing solution.

This carpet cleaner was purchased after our Hoover carpet cleaner was beyond repair- 10 Years after we bought it. This upright Rug Doctor worked great the first few times we used it. Since we have pets, we would have to spray out the excess animal hair (we do vacuum before every time we clean the carpets). Well, in addition to the fact that we noticed water leaking out of the wheel areas, suction became minimal. I noticed there was quite a bit of dog hair and dirt built up near the bristles. When I went to try and clean this out, I soon realized that the bottom plastic piece can’t be removed. SAY WHAT?! I don’t know what kind of design this is and to be honest, I never thought to even look. Who makes a carpet cleaner where you can’t remove parts to thoroughly clean it out? I emailed Rug Doctor about this and they confirmed, “No, that piece can not be removed but you can wrap a wash cloth around a ruler to get up in there to remove the excess hair.” We only bought this 6 months ago and I just went online this morning and bought myself another Hoover. Don’t waste your time with this carpet cleaner if you have pets.

Works really well, especially on pet messes. I've used the big blue Rug Doctor many times and I'd say it still works better and definitely has a larger tank, but this one is great for the price and takes up a bit less space. It's also waaay less awkward to empty and refill. The bigger one kills your back after a while of lugging the heavy tank to empty and refill it. This one also has clear parts so you can easily rinse out and sort pet hair if it gets in. I've owned a Bissel and a Hoover steam cleaner that broke after a short time and just weren't that effective. Granted, this machine was over $100 more, but it's worth it not having to replace it after a year and actually having a clean carpet after one use. My one complaint is the position of the handle. Unless you're over 6' (and I'm not a short woman at 5'8) it's too tall and awkward. Rug Doctors aren't supposed to tilt back while you use them like a vacuum would, so it can be uncomfortable to try and drag it with the handle so high. Unless it's got a feature I'm missing that allows release and tilt of the handle while the actual cleaner stays upright, it's a bit of a glaring design flaw. Still a fantastic buy that I couldn't get by without and Best Buy shipped it super quickly.

After tons of research both online and looking in stores at different models this machine beats them all without a doubt! The quality of the machine is obvious with everything from the power cord to the quality of plastic used. The best part is that unlike most other carpet cleaners this one actually cleans AND has amazing suction. Like anything there are things that could be improved on, but the good far outweighs the bad. Cons: small water tank capacity means frequent trips to the sink to refill, no option to turn on just the brush without spraying water so you can’t really deep scrub an area without having to consistently spray water on the spot too, there’s no built in water heater. Pros: cleans amazingly well, my carpets look like new again! Strong suction means less dry time and cleaner carpets, easy to clean, ready to use out of the box - no assembly needed. Trust me people! I have 4 dogs, this thing is great. As long as it holds up I am extremely happy with this carpet cleaner and would never go back to Bissell or Hoover.

I have 3 large female dogs. In the winter, they tend to have repeated accidents in the house. I've owned a number of competing brands (Hoover, Bissel, etc.) all in the $200-$300 range. They only seemed to do the job when I could clean the stains immediately. I have had stains for years now that could never come out, despite numerous treatments, even using Urine Destroyer to try to break it down. The reviews on the Rug Doctor sounded promising. I will admit that only being able to pull backwards with the machine was a little strange at first, but whatever the change is in their manufacturing process, I have to say it works. I tried the stains in my living room carpet that were several years old and virtually every one of them disappeared completely and have not come back (with other machines, they might fade for a few days, then mysteriously resurface). I also found the price $10 less on Amazon and they credited me the difference. I'm very happy with this one!

I have worked in the cleaning profession for over 30 years. I never had carpeting until I recently moved to a fully carpeted apartment. I did a lot of research online and visiting many stores, talking to salesman. I am completely satisfied with this machine. I particularly like that it folds fairly compact for easy storage in the bottom of my small hallway closet, and that it so thoroughly extracts the moisture leaving the carpet nearly dry. I was far from excited about the cleanliness after using the shampoo that came with the machine. 2 days later I mixed up my own "shampoo" and did the same area of carpet again. This time it was very clean and fresh. I have cats and dogs and the hair and vomit accidents are a forever problem. I believe I will become best of friends with my new rug doctor.

Purchased this Rug Doctor carpet cleaner in August 2016 from Best Buy. We were happy with the unit at first and used it about 1-2 times a month, but after 13 months the clear water tank cracked on the bottom and after 18 months the clear front cover (main suction) above the brushes broke off. The design and materials used are poor quality. We maintained the unit, rinsed both the clear water tank and dirty water tank after every use. What is even more upsetting, I contacted Rug Doctor Support for the replacement part I need to make the repair and based on the serial number of my unit, they informed me the part is no longer is made. The Support suggested I look for the part from private sellers that are selling parts or ask local vacuum repair shops if they had something that would fit.

I do not like having to keep the little red button on the handle depressed for the brush to spin. It takes a lot of pressure to do so with one hand and it is awkward to work with both hands all the time. Also, sometimes I just want water for rinsing. There is always soap being dispensed when the button is pressed. The clean water tank runs out way too quickly. I believe i had to refill about 8 or so times to just do my bedroom. Also, after the first filling, the clean water tank would not deplete all the way to empty. The dirty water tank is huge but the "full line" marker is less than half way; so the tank is considered full before it looks full...AND... you have to empty it before it gets to the full line or it dumps dirty water on your carpet. The super boost sprayer works well except for when the water level in the clean tank is 1/4 or less, then it doesn't at all. Had to use an additional brand of cleaning liquid to get spots out. It took me WAY to long to get that room done. Compared to my last shampooer, I prefer the initial clean on the Rug Doctor but nothing else. May return.

I bought this machine, after I bought 2 hoovers, I hated both of them. The first one the handle broke and I couldn't reorder it. Then the 2nd hoover, left the carpet soaked, But the Rug Doctor does a great job! We used it at home, wonderful job, used it on a little house I was flipping the carpet was so bad! I went over the carpets 3 times, then a couple days later I did it again, and finally got them clean, these carpets where so dirty! I love you can actually see the carpet lift up with the suction, you can feel the brushes shake the floor with the pressure of the rollers. Only draw back is the dirty water take does drip dirty water on the way to the sink, but if you keep a towel handy, there is no problem. Again love this product!

This product is everything it says it is; great! I paid a professional company to clean my carpet and I was not satisfied. I bought this product with skepticism to see if I could get better results, and guess what? I got better results even right after I paid a lot of cash for stem extraction and citrus treatment. This Rug Doctor machine is the best. I was even motivated to clean all the upholstery around the house with great results!! See the photo I include of the improved carpet cleaning even after the professionals were done with my carpet.

I have had more than 7 different carpet cleaners over the past 5 years and I thought this one was going to be the best. However, while this cleaner does an amazing job in cleaning carpets it will not use enough water to actually clean odors from pets. The cleaner does not use enough water for pet urine/accidents. If you just want to clean carpets and have fast dry times, then this would be a great device however, if you have pets...look elsewhere. This machine is also very easy to clean and holds a large amount of water. Also, before anyone asks, yes, i used the super boost water spray feature and it still did not do enough to clean pet urine.

I have bought over the years, 4 other rug cleaners from other companies all promising great results. I have 2 very large and hair dogs no matter how hard I cleaned them after using they started to loose power. They all left too much water on the carpet no matter how many times I went over them. The Rug doctor using its own brand of soap leaves a clean scent not some masked scent the others leave behind. The suction is so strong the carpets dry in no time, and the fact that clean water does not mix in the same compartment as dirty water makes changing both easy and fast. And the design lets you clean everything leaving nothing behind.Since getting the Rug Doctor I have cleaned over 10 carpets with great results the 10 one just as clean as the 1st one when I took it out of the box. If you have dogs and dirty carpets I recommend the Rug Doctor,

Out of the box, the Rug Doctor - Upright Deep Cleaner was easy to assemble, only a few parts to attach. Next step was filling it with the cleaning solution. I was concerned when I first saw how small the holding tanks are, about a gallon in size I estimate. I thought that it would not last very long and I would spend more time filling and emptying the tanks than I would on cleaning the carpet. This was not the case. I cleaned the carpet in my media room, room size is about 14'x20', and I still had over one half of the tank left. I really can not accurately report on how well the carpet was cleaned, the water in the return tank was cloudy but we had just cleaned that carpet two weeks prior to getting this Rug Doctor. I will reserve judgement on this to a later date but so far I am satisfied with this purchase.

I think it cleans fine. I miss my bissle because I could watch the suction and see when it was no longer sucking up liquid from the carpet. I realized how nice it is to see the suction when I was cleaning in front of a mirror and saw when it was no longer picking up liquid. Another thing I missed was being able to push and pull when I cleaned the carpet. You have to tip back to push it forward so there is no cleaning being done with forward motion. I should have researched a little better, but I will see how this one holds up. I can always clean my carpets with the hand tool since I can definitely see when it is done sucking up liquid.

Purchased this after MANY other brands and types of cleaners 1.5 years ago. The hose will not stay on the machine so we have to store it and bring it up when we need to use it. We find after we shut the machine off that there is a puddle of dirty water under the machine. Then the clean water tank broke so we had to purchase a replacement part. I was using this two weeks ago and the machine quit spraying water. So I find myself NOW in the market for a new machine. It seemed to clean, but does not last especially for the money. It is difficult to push in my opinion as well. I was frustrated with this machine with the muddy puddle of water right out of the box. Maybe my new machine was just defective.

If you buy the rug doctor upright cleaner make sure that you were using it at home. I took it to my church to use and it was very inconvenient to reload water and soap and to drain the machine every 15 minutes. The machine is a good value compared to other machines and never having owned one I don't know if it works as well as or less than others, but one thing that needs to be built in is a self heating unit. You can't use hot hot water in it and because of this you may not get the same deep cleaning that you would get with a rug steaming machine. The soap that comes with it is acceptable but when doing the large areas it can be very expensive. I would use it at home and not in a business
