I watched a lot of Youtube videos before I decided to pull the trigger on the Tello. Most camera drones are large and intimidating and look like they could cause some havoc in the wrong hands (like mine) - but the Tello is super friendly (only 80 grams!) and super simple to use. I decided to buy the Tello by itself for $99 and buy the accessories separately; but the next day, the combo went on sale for $99, so I exchanged the Tello for the Tello Boost Combo. The Combo comes with 3 batteries, replacement props, and the charging bay with a USB cable. At $99 the combo is hard to beat (at $149, it's a wash) so I bought two and gave one to my nephew (who also loves it). FWIW - Good enough quality to take the occasional pictures/video to share with friends is my expectation at this price point. This is my first drone - I never wanted a large, complex drone with GPS - and thanks to the DJI software and sensors, it behaves just like I expected a large drone would right out of the box. It hovers very steady and is very responsive to control inputs. The photos are very good and the video is phone-quality. Range could be better, but battery life is excellent and there are simple aftermarket hacks to extend the Tello's range and height limits significantly, and improve the video performance with a wi-fi extender and .99 phone app. I recently purchased a Gamevice controller for my phone, and the joysticks make it a lot easier to maneuver quickly. The software is very good on the iPhone, I don't know about other brands. The few things that could be improved on the Tello are the video quality (although it is very good for $99), the ability to swivel the camera up/down, and more exposure options in the software. Some of these gripes may be addressed in firmware, but I'm quite sure the next generation of Tello will have all that and much more. It is an amazing 'toy' for young and old!

My son received one of these for the holidays. He's a a teen, at the age when asking what he wants responds with "I dunno" or "whatever." Since I've known him since he was very young, I suggested to a family member a drone would be a good bet. They bought this one based on price and a recommendation from a BB employee, expecting it to be a fun toy. It was much more - this was absolutely the biggest hit amongst the gifts. For how much it cost, we expected something very basic, even more so when we saw how small it is. Wow, were we wrong. The POV makes it extremely easy to know what it's doing and how to control it, even if the drone itself is hard to see. Flying is amazing, controls are easy, the automated/built-in maneuvers are exceptional, and - probably most important for something like this - it is, quite simply, massively fun to use. The only drawback is the video recordings are not very good. Light leveling is bad, videos are quite grainy, and though it says it's recording in 720, it looks much lower. It has bad pixelation, and on an HDTV, even perfectly straight lines seem to aliasing. Strangely enough, the photos come out quite well. Not exactly professional-grade, obviously, but considering the cost of the drone and the poor video recording, the photos are pretty good. Overall, a great buy, and a significantly better product than we expected before using it.

I wanted to try a drone out without breaking the bank and buying an expensive one. The Tello drone is SO MUCH FUN!! The boost kit provides extra propellers, three batteries , and a charger. It's a small drone and you have to be a little careful that you don't bend or break any parts which is a little hard to do. I've smashed into things and it's fallen down quite a bit and still works well. Don't expect this to be high-end because that's not what you are paying for, but it's still a great starter drone. You have to connect with app from phone or tablet via wifi, so range is limited but can go pretty good distances. If you plan to use outside, make sure it's not super windy outside. I specifically bought this to check my roof. I have a two story, and we have had some strong storms the past few weeks. Wind blew it around a bit but I got the video I needed to review my rood. I use this inside quite a bit just to fly around and tease my dogs. I would recommend for starters. Great for educating kids. They have an EDU version, but this version also allows you to use Scratch SDK kit to do custom programming and coding. FUN!

I/We fly most of the DJI products and use them for work. While we like our grandson getting involved, this was a perfect gift for not only him but anyone who is looking for a starter type!! I was really impressed flying in our hangar and the quality of pics for 720p! It would be great for anyone having never flown before and very stable. I have many toys drones for our grandson, he took this and flew it without our guidance, first time! He was able to do flips and other features along with taking pics and video. It's the best $99.00 Dollars we ever spent!! Please don't waste your money on anything else, I promise, this is the drone everyone will like!! Absolutely anyone can fly this off an iPhone! Auto take-off and Auto-Landing, so cool!

There are no downsides to this drone as a starter unit, except possibly battery life. You will want those extra batteries and therefore the three battery charger. Try to get the kit that comes with all this instead of just the drone itself. The software app is great, connects to a local WiFi created by the drone itself (meaning you will not have other internet connectivity while using it), and has a bunch of nifty features such as various canned maneuvers, fast and slow mode, still shots and videos. It even works with google cardboard for a mild VR experience which is quite effective. It also works with Bluetooth joysticks which is much better for control. For around $90 it is an amazing way to get started to see if you really like drones before spending more serious money. You will love looking out the camera at a high altitude. Also, for kids it is less intimidating and less dangerous. Crashing this drone many times has not damaged it at all, and it does come with a few extra propellers. P.s. there may be an “educational” version of this which has more features, but I am unsure.

First the positives. For the size, build quality is great. It’s easy to fly and intuitive even indoors. The boost pack includes multiple batteries and a charging hub to keep the fun going (individual batteries don’t last very long). Now to be critical. The Tello is advertised as working with Bluetooth game pads. While true in a sense, they leave out that it’s only two very specific controllers and one is highly customized and only sold by DJI. Also if you live in a more urban or heavy WiFi area you are not going to get the stated range. Overall the Tello is still a fun toy (note I said toy) for beginners. I feel that with the featured logos on the box they should have passed down a few more features from its Phantom and Mavic cousins and at least included a controller. The Tello just needs refined ie: is it for racing? Is it a toy? Or is it for drone pilots stuck indoors in the winter.

Best sub $100 camera drone in the market

I had fell in love with this camera drone that I had purchased 2 more Tello spares in case of a 'flyaway' (this is very light) which happened once when I flew it over 20 meters using a 3rd-party app The 'boost combo' was such a steal at $99 (TG sale) because I had spent $155 for the drone, 2 batteries & the charging hub if bought individually. The 'boost combo' came with 3 batteries!!! All you need to buy is a remote (I got the GameSir T1d), a WiFi extender & portable power bank to complete your kit and max out the flying experience.. I am hoping that Ryze would update the Tello with a better camera and more features on the next version - which I would definitely buy again! Right now, it's the best sub $100 camera drone for beginners out there.

    Boost combo has no remote

I'm a newbie to camera drones. All of my practice toy drones had remotes which are the only way I feel comfortable flying because I tried one with a phone and had no luck whatever. The paragraph said there was a remote included which is why I purchased it. Value wise, without the remote, I don't know if the combo is worth it. $99 drone, 2 extra batteries and an extra set of propellers is $144 without the bundle but the bundle is $149. Having a remote was the only thing that would've made it worth it to me at that price. The charging port alone wasn't. If you're comfortable with flying with a phone, from the reviews I've seen about the drive itself, it's a great entry level drone. I'm not, so I returned it without trying it out. So my review is entirely about the value of the boost combo at that price with those accessories.

I bought this drone because it appeared to be a good one to start with, without breaking the bank. I wanted something more than a toy that had a decent camera with the ability for both stills and video. I bought the version with extra batteries and an external charging dock so I could have more flight time - important when you're learning how to fly. So far I've been happy with my purchase. Excuse the picture of my roof, but it's something I couldn't do without this drone.

Amazing quality and stability, battery time. Can use with phone or certain game controllers. I have 4 other copters and drones all under $250. Nothing comes close to the stability, agility and camera quality and then the biggest advantage is the price. The price point compared to the value is what blew me away after a few hours of flying indoors and out. No question this is the best Quad under $500 let alone $149 for the whole kit with extra batteries. Great beginner drone due to its stability and control. Don't bother shopping for any other drone.

I have a Mavic Pro and got this just to mess around with indoors and to give my daughters something to play with. So far really impressed. The range isn't great, but for the price there doesn't seem to be anything close to the ability of this little guy. The video feed is nice and as long as you stay in range the controls are responsive and the app works great on both iOS and Android. It is durable and even after a couple of crashes, no issues. I really like that it stops the blades when it hits something. Get the safety cage for it and let your kids go wild indoors. hah.

Bought this for teen grandkids as a training drone -- it's their first, and I wasn't going to go high-dollar until I knew they really enjoyed it and would actually use it. Wise choice -- it works well and they did indeed enjoy it over Christmas holiday, but they probably won't become drone-thusiasts! Still, I enjoyed playing with it myself -- once app was loaded and batteries charged, it was responsive and easy and fun to use, a good training toy. Kinda made this old gramma want one of her own (maybe I'll inherit this one when the kids get tired of it).

I'll start off saying that I started flying drones with the DJI Spark, which is also good given the price and is a good beginner drone. But I would recommend this before the spark as I have found this drone is extremely durable, weighs practically nothing and has atti mode only. The reason atti mode is so important is so a pilot knows what to do if their fancy gps drone suddenly loses satellite signals. It prepares pilots for the real world, and gets them ready for larger aircraft. In addition, its amazing how much smart tech is in this.

This little guy is awesome for around the house and small jobs. I have used it to inspect my gutters, inspect things on the roof and even haul a string over a branch to hoist a chain over later. It is pretty handy except for the fact that you cannot get it more than about 50 feet away from you before it starts losing signal. That is the only negative I have is the distance that it flies. Other than that, it is an awesome entry level drone and can be flown indoors or outside with a very light wind.

Bought the $99 Sale for the Boost Combo. Great Deal! I have been flying a Phantom 4 for three years and also own a Mavic Pro and a Spark. I was really surprised by this little guy. Indoors it is very stable and actually flies pretty well. I have only flown indoors and mainly just to keep my flying skills in tact over the winter months. Really the biggest drawback is the fixed camera, other than that this is a legit little camera drone for novice pilots or experienced pilots to hone their skills indoors.

I've been flying drones for professional/fun purposes for years. The Tello is by far my favorite pickup and fly drone. It's super easy to use, stable, responsive and quiet enough it doesn't get on peoples nerves. The phone connection thing is very easy, and if you like it enough grab a Gamesire T1D controller. It makes the responsiveness so reliable that you can do some crazy stuff in the flip/roll mode.

Bought this for my son (5yo) after he had tried playing with a small air wolf helo for awhile. This is extremely easy to learn off of. He's been able to learn all the autopilot features with it and do tricks with it fairly easily. The take off and landing auto pilot features are extremely nice. The video and pictures it takes are actually pretty decent too! Overall, very hard to beat especially for the price. Highly recommend getting the combo as the extra batteries and charging bank are definitely nice to have.

Bought this for our 11 year old son and he loves it. Very simple to fly and we do so indoors with lots of ceiling fans and obstacles and it is easy to control. We bought a controller but it wasn't necessary since you fly with your iPhone or iPad with a point of view from the camera. It can do flips and other aerial tricks and gets really good battery life - plus with the 3 extra batteries you can run it pretty much non stop if you swap. Really fun and surprisingly solid for this price.

Great gift to give to someone who loves drones, like my husband. He love taking his Tello out for flying all the time. I bought it for my husband when it was on sale for Black Friday. I believe I got the bundle for $99 on BF. Which is such a great price. The drone by itself without the extra batteries and propeller is already $99. Got a good deal & my husband loved it. It’s small and easy to fly. Also really great video quality. I definitely recommend for a beginner.
