More than basic functionality

I didn't have need for a particularly complex microwave, but past experience with cheaper ones made me consider getting a more expensive one. After some online research, I was left deciding between an inverter microwave and one with built in convection. I wanted something that wouldn't leave food dried out, completely burnt, or with halves at completely different temperatures. The inverter does this by limiting the microwave energy emitted and letting heat absorbed by the food spread out inside of it to heat it more evenly. The inverter unit that I was looking at (a Panasonic) was cheaper, but as I had accumulated a fair number of Best Buy points and considered the usefulness of using the convection unit as a mini oven, I decided to go with the combination convection microwave.
Reviews I read before purchase point out the unusual control interface which I noticed at first sight. I tried to download the manual to understand the controls, but Samsung's website would not load the pdf properly. I bought the microwave anyway. The controls are unusual, but are explained in the manual. They aren't necessarily confusing, but I don't see why a traditional number pad could have been used. The dial controls add no value. This is the primary reason why I rated the unit 4 stars instead of 5.
As far as the quality of food goes, the microwave is the best I've had. I did not even need to use the convection feature (and I did not even try it because it requires cookware that can withstand oven use while being microwave safe, which I don't currently have). Food is heated evenly and thoroughly. The downside is that it takes practice to find the right settings for the food. Regular microwave use can be set by time (but only with the dial, so the step in cook time with each turn changes with the total time set) but all the specialized modes have preset times based on food quantity. My favorite mode, Auto Reheat/Cook, goes on for far too long when dealing with small portions. The modes themselves are ambiguous and even after consulting the manual, I wasn't sure which mode was for what.
While I didn't need the convection mode, I think it's handy to have. The unit reaches temperature faster than a large oven and is fairly spacious. I prefer using it over my regular oven.
Overall this is a good microwave and from what I've seen it does what it promises to do, but this might be more than some people require. I will probably never use all the features of this unit, but that is on me and not a fault of the machine. If you are only interested in basic functionality you will probably be better off with a cheaper unit. As this unit is getting on the expensive side, there are multiple cheaper options to consider before you get into low quality budget microwaves. These other microwaves probably have less obtuse controls too. One last thing I'll mention is that the microwave is bigger than it looks in the store, or at least that's how it was for me. The box was huge and it takes a lot of space on my counter. It's also heavy. Make sure that you can carry it inside if you do buy it.

Well built with unique design

There's a lot to like about this microwave, and a few trade-offs.
Pros:
- very well built
- very sturdy door that opens from the top
- easy to clean enamel interior
- unique combination of microwave, grill, and convection oven
- unique cooking modes for grill plus microwave and convection plus microwave
- physical push buttons instead of membrane keys
- unique knob to select cooking power and time
- runs quieter than other microwaves
Trade-offs:
- the grill element is exposed at the top of the oven, and it takes up approx 1.5 inches of height on the oven's interior
- the convection fan at the back of the oven adds a few inches of depth to the oven's exterior
- since the door opens from the top, it is easier to access the interior if the oven is installed on a counter vs a shelf
Bottom line, I would buy this again mainly because it is so well built and for the unique features.

This was the perfect replacement for a unit that finally stopped working. It has all the features and it looks modern. Fortunately, it also works well on every task that we have given it from warming baby food to defrosting chicken. It has done everything that we wanted it to do and I am satisfied.

I will say I got this in sale, about $250, so take that into account, but its a decent microwave and convection oven. I have yet to use the convection oven much, but seems to work well the few times I've used it. I agree with the other reviews, it takes some time to get the hang of, but appreciate all the features. The only downside is it really doesn't do a good job of toasting, it can 'sort of' replace you toaster oven, but you may want to keep a bread toaster around for truely crisp toast. At $250 I'd buy it again, at full price, i'd be on the fence.

Amazing Fries

The "healthy frying" function alone is with it! We had removed an ancient over-the-stove microwave and replaced it with a hood, so we needed a countertop microwave. I also wanted a countertop convection oven so the Samsung was on my "list." The style is beautiful and the pull-down door is great, especially for tight spaces. The menu can be a little intimidating as it has WAY more functionality than a traditional microwave. I love my deep fryer so I was skeptical of the healthy frying function but... it is AMAZING. The included plate and elevated interior platform cooked up two servings of frozen sweet potato fries (perfect) in about 25min. Sure-longer than frying but with ZERO oil. It alternates convection and microwave on a special included plate. Why only 4-stars? It doesn't let you select single-sized popcorn as a preset. Another minor issue is the complexity... you MUST have the manual handy if you are using any of "new" functions. It could be that I'm just used to having a basic feature-set, and the new functions are fairly logical, but it will take some time to adjust. If you are a moderate-serious cook or just need an extra oven, you won't be disappointed.

Bought this convection/microwave combo to free up some real estate and to be able have use of an extra oven from time to time.
The slim fry option works fine, as does the microwave....the convection works fine as well although there is a function that causes it to shut off to keep from overheating. It's kind of a pain, but it was something that I could deal with and work with...maybe not something that everyone can.
Overall, I am pleased with my purchase.

It's a nice combination of microwave, convection oven and grill. It replaced the old microwave and toaster, and saved some space on the countertop. Nice looking and works great.

I bought this because it can do a lot and was on sale. That and I liked the feel of the knob and the general look of the device.
Just as the other reviews say, the manual isn't so helpful... But once you bumble around, it's quite the performer. So as my friends tease me about my $400 microwave, I'll enjoy good food and a nice kitchen.

This was the nicest looking microwave at Best Buy. It has real push button and a big dial that has a great twist. Not really into the extra features of the microwave. They make it weigh a lot and drives the price up. However reheating pizza with the grill+microwave feature using the crisping plate yields great results. Minus one star because I wish they made a regular old microwave with the same chassis and outer design.

I bought this for an RV replacement. It was the right size which was good although I'm not crazy about the door opening down. We've found it very easy to use and especially like the eco touch to turn off the LED display.

I wanted a microwave/convection oven combination and this fits the bill to a tee!! Easy to use and does not heat up your house. Only drawback is the oven door is sometimes hard to open, especially with one hand. I'm used to pushing a button and the door opens. But, overall I would highly recommend this unit, plus the price was right!!

This microwave does double duty since it can grill and microwave independently or at the same time. This saves time, space, and energy.
It is a lot of fun trying new ways to do old favorites. The food taste great too. I knocked it down 1 star because I have seen it do some quirky things, but it straightened itself out.

This is the 2nd one we purchased. The first was faulty and Samsung sent us our money back because they could not fix it. We bought it because we love the features - convection oven, broiler, microwave and a door that opened down rather than a left side hinge.
