    Finally satisfied

    Posted .

For the past month I have been trying to find a laptop that would satisfy my simple requirements... A centrally placed touch pad that is functional and a processor that was a little better than average for the daily user. I have bought and returned 4 different laptops in the past 2 weeks before giving the Samsung a try. So far the Samsung is by far the best machine I have tried. Out of the box you can feel the quality and appreciate the well thought out design that Samsung is known for. Right after power up I noticed how quiet it was....its been running for hours now and you wouldn't even know it. Crystal clear screen and the keyboard is nicely spaced with raised keys making it a lot easier for me to type. The touch pad is by far the best one I have used out of the five. Very nice feel and has a separate bar on the bottom for left and right click commands. The I3 processor is fast and responsive, just what I need (I don`t play video games on it.) 500GB of memory and a BLU Ray player for around $700.00 make this a excellent buy. Pros keyboard and touch pad well designed Plenty of power and memory extremely quiet Blu Ray player Cons leaves a lot of fingerprints that is it so far, have only had it one day,but as I posted up above I have bought 4 laptops over the past month and returned them all. This Samsung is a hands down winner!!

    Great Buy!!!

    Posted .

I noticed this new version of the R580 and wondered why it was cheaper than the original since its processing speed is actually faster and since it is newer. The reason is that this model has the WiMAX mobile broadband capability that allows the laptop to run at up to 3 times the 3G with a plan. According to one of the Best Buy employees they lowered the price of the computer in order to better sell the capability and the plan. I personally decided against getting the high-speed plan for now. When it comes to the laptop, I could not be more happy! I was skeptical about getting a Samsung since they are not as established as other names in the business, but it ended up everything I wanted. The initial setup was quick, and the computer was not overloaded with junk. The keyboard with the numeric pad works great! This is the first laptop I feel totally comfortable typing on and don't accidentally hit the mouse pad. The mouse pad in itself is great and I love that I can use it to scroll. The laptop is super quiet and does not overheat. I have downloaded a number of programs, movies, and music which all took minimal time. The only gripe I would have is that this laptop attracts fingerprints, but it is super easy to clean with the cloth that comes with the computer. Overall this was a great buy, and I am very impressed with Samsung.

My first impression: Should be a 3.5/ 5

    Posted .

I just got this yesterday so this is my very first impression on the laptop... It is a fingerprint magnet, that's why I gave it a low convenience score. I expect a glossy finish to attract fingerprints, it's inconvenient, but in no way does it affect the performance of the device... On the left side of the computer there is no eSATA port or express card slot, but there is plastic there that makes it look like there is. It is a complete waste of space and a waste of plastic. I'm sure they did this to cut costs. I don't really care because I wouldn’t use these things, but it would have been nicer if they would have maybe used a case that didn't make it look like it had something it doesn't. They used a generic case to save money... They have two USB ports right on top of each other on the right side of the computer. It makes them harder to use when they are right on top of each other. They should have put them side by side on the left side of the optical drive. There is plenty of room there. You'll see... My computer came optimized by the Geek Squad with a complete back up of my computer for FREE DOLLARS, which was nice. It has no bloatware or useless trail software or advertisements on it. Well only one advertisement, Best Buy’s digital software app OF COURSE. It has free Webroot antivirus for 6 months. The Core I-3 processor is quiet and fast. The 500 GB hard drive is plentiful and a good value. The keyboard is roomy and good and I’m glad it has a numerical pad. The trackpad is average, not great, but not terrible. I wish the trackpad was more clearly defined though. The mouse buttons are average, but I wish they were bigger. The speaker audio is average, I’ve had it up full blast and there is no distortion that I can hear. The screen is bright. It has a BD player, which is great, but with the graphics card limitation the max you can get from the 15.6” screen is 720p. Still, I think this computer has great value. For $630, you get a lot really good stuff. Even though you can’t get 1080p out of the screen, this computer has very good value. The battery on this computer is average. From what I can see, under 3 hours so far.

Great Laptop, Great Price $580 - Black Friday

    Posted .

I saw this notebook on bestbuy.com the day before Black Friday. I had never had a Samsung computer before, I actually didn't know they even manufactured computers up until a few days ago. Samsung is known for creating great products. I must say I was very impressed when I first brought it home. First off it is not that heavy at all(5.4 lb), the design of the notebook is very sleek, it gives it that expansive look to it. I love the keyboard design, It actually makes it easier to clean with a q-tip if you ever get stuff in between your keys. Nice looking LED display(15.6 inches), great for movies. I like the fact that there were no bloatware on the system. This computer is super fast with Intel Core i3-370M processor 2.40GHz. (Best Buy lists it as 2.53GHz which is incorrect.) I can easily play 1080p content without any lag at all. I did try some basic gaming and it does boot up everything I threw at it but at low settings. I tested out COD4 and It played fine on low settings. I was able to play some older games from 2006 on high settings. If you ever decide you want to restore the computer it takes 6 minutes to do so which is super fast. The system does not get hot and is really quiet. For the price that I paid for this was a great deal considering that this was $730 a week ago, I see that it is $650 now and I would honestly still pay that much because it's such a nice system. The battery isn't that good but I can easily replace it with a 12-cell battery and get 6+ hours of battery life. You might want to take note that this does not have an e-Sata port or an ExpressCard slot even though there is a port on the side but it is blocked by plastic because there are similar models that do have these features and they use the same casing. Don't forget to register online, they'll give you 3 more months of warranty on top of the 12 months !

    I really like this laptop

    Posted .

I rated this laptop as good, but really it is somewhere between good and excellent. On the positive side, it just works really well. Everything I need to do is quick, without delay. Just so you know, I am a light user - I use the laptop for surfing the internet, hanging out on facebook, and using a few excel spreadsheets. I have even used some programs to do some audio file editing / recording and it has worked just fine! I also like the raised keyboard, it helps keep those little crumbs from getting inside the letter keys. The weight of the laptop is nice as well - pretty light for it's size and it feels very sturdy. I also like the the way the screen is hinged onto the base (my Dell laptop's hinges were always breaking because it was connected above the base.) Asthetically, the laptop is really nice - the red color just pops. I also like the finish, and the way my fingers / palm glide across the base when typing. Yeah, it's glossy, so there are fingerprints and the dust shows, but it's not an issue if you simply wipe it down once in a while. On the neutral side - well, like most new laptops these days, the operating system is Windows 7. The operating system works fine, but there have been a few programs that I used on Windows XP that do not work on Windows 7. Luckily, some of those programs had Windows 7 updates, but a few of them didn't - which is very annoying!!! An example is that the Noise Reduction add-in for Sound Forge will not work on Windows 7. Since this is not the actual laptop's fault, I describe this as a neutral issue. Also, I know that some people have complained that the touch pad is too sensitive, but that can be easily adjusted in the mouse pad settings. The keyboard has a number pad incorporated into it, and I know that many people like this, but I personally rather not have it. Negative: Well, the only real negative is the sound. Samsung has tried to improve the sound with a unique design - but the sound is just way too tinny, though it does play a lot louder than most other laptops I have seen. There are audio settings where you can make adjustments, and it helps a little. The fact is, if you want great sound, you really should invest in a decent set of external computer speakers. If I happen to be editing an audio file, I use headphones. Other minor things: The screen, though very clear and bright, needs some contrast and there are no controls in Windows 7 to add contrast, though I don't think other operating systems have that control either. Also, the DVD/Blue Ray player is pretty loud as compared to other laptops I have owned. Another quibble, is that the touch pad mouse click buttons are a little stiff / clicky. As far as the battery is concerned, I think Samsung could have provided a larger-cell battery. I only get like 2 hours of battery time. All-in-all, I like this laptop. The 500gb hard drive with 4gb memory, combined with the pretty nicely rated intel core i3 370m chip and the blue ray player with the ability to burn and play DVD's and a built-in webcam, with future wimax capability already built in, makes this laptop a really good buy in the $600 range.

Very good performance for a low cost

I have been looking for a good laptop for some time now, trying to find a replacement for my older Dell D810 laptop that has only 2 GB of DDR2 RAM, a 320 GB Hard Drive and an Intel CPU of 2.1 GHz. I wanted a laptop that could handle all my daily office chores, and still have enough power left over to watch a movie or listen to some streaming music, while I do my e-mail, write my books, and play my video games. The Samsung R580 has a Blu-ray drive, which is perfect to watch Blu-ray movies. It has an output to an external TV monitor, which is nice. The Samsung R580 laptop is the best deal when looking for a machine with a Core i3 370 CPU, 4 GB of RAM, and a nice roomy 500 GB of hard drive space. The Best Buy price of only 579 is a steal and I did not have to wait in line to get the best laptop. The Windows 7 scores were the best of ANY laptop at Best Buy for under 700 dollars. The scores are: CPU=6.7, RAM= 5.9, Desktop graphics = 4.6, 3D graphics= 5.2, Hard Drive= 5.9. If you are looking for a good deal on a powerful desktop replacement, try this Samsung R580 laptop and I am sure you would be pleased with its roomy island keyboard, bright LED monitor display, fast Core i3 CPU, roomy Hard Drive, and Blu-ray drive. Some say this attracts finger prints, but those wipe off very easily with the towel that comes with the laptop. The finish is great and looks wonderful on my wooden desk. I am a very happy customer.

    Awesome laptop

I've owned 4 laptops and a few desktops in my life. All I can say is that Samsung did a great job with this computer...so far (I've only owned it for 1 week). It's got a phenomenal display...the keyboard is solid feeling and designed much like apple macs in terms of their keyboard feeling, but I think it is better....it has a crisper feeling and it types much better and faster. It's got abluray player which is near next to impossible to find at the price I paid for this laptop $579 on sale. Also a HDMI output, more than enough storage... One of the biggest selling points was the i3 processor which is ridiculously fast...not only was I watching a movie on VLC, but I was running google chrome checking my email accounts, and at the same time converting two files to ipod video high res too, on two different programs and there was no hesitation at all in what I was doing...i mean I do have 4 gb or ram, and a big front side bus so iwasn't surprised, but definitely impressed. OVerall if you want a quality piece of machinery I would say get this laptop when it is on sale. I really wanted the 480 model with a 14 inch screen that was on sale for $449 but those sold out within minutes of the sale occurring. HOwever I'm not at all sad because the 15.6 inch screen is glorious!

    Replacement for outdated laptop

    Posted .

I bought this laptop because my old laptop was not performing well. In order to do what I wanted, I was going to have to spend almost as much money as a new one to upgrade it. When I walked into Best Buy I never even knew Samsung made computers let alone considered buying one. i loved the way it looked different from the rest. It is light. Set up was easy. The display is big. The wireless signal is strong. It has exceeded my expectations so far.

I've had this computer for quite a while and it has lasted quite a long time. I recently put windows 10 on it with zero problems. The only concern is the battery life but that's standard for any laptop (replacing the batter after a couple years). Samsung has made some great laptops. This one specifically was made when Samsung just started making laptops.

    Great Home Laptop

    Posted .

Bought this laptop for a b-day gift for my husband for web surfing/emailing/etc.... didn't want anything too sophisticated, but was worried he would turn up his nose since it wasn't an Intel i5/Mac/or iPad. Great news - He LOVES it. First, being a UGA alum, he loves the black and red shell. I guess if you were an avid fan of a rival school, you might think otherwise...but don't!! Appearance isn't an end-all-be-all, but it did win me some points. The Intel i3 processor is super fast for what we use it for and the LED backlit sreen display is beautiful. Setup was a piece of cake - even with the webroot installation it may have taken 15 mins to set up. The only thing a little less than perfect is getting used to the offset number keys to the right of the keyboard....but really, with a laptop this nice and with most of the mid-range and higher-end laptops having offset number keys now, I think we just need get used to it. Great mid-range laptop - very comfortable & great performance. Feel confident with this Samsung laptop!

I bought this computer last night after my Dell died and I absolutely love it. The keyboard is well thought out, it is fast and responsive and the sound is good. It is also very lightweight, which is important to me because I am a student and I take my computer with me to school. I would rate this above average.

Great laptop for first time user

    Posted .

I was looking to replace our home desktop PC with a laptop that I could use for work and home purposes while we were out of town. This laptop has seemed to fit the bill. It was easy to transfer the files from my desktop PC that I was replacing to this laptop. This is the first laptop that I have owned, but I like it better and it performs better than my previouse desktop PC and I can take it with me when I go somewhere. It looks great also. The only matter that I could change is that it would have a longer battery life.

After alot of reviews I decided to actually go with a Gateway laptop, because it had the same specs as this Samsung but was 80 bucks cheaper. Well that was a huge mistake, I had the gateway for a few days used for basic internet email ect and got the Blue Screen of death(Harddrive crash). I returned the computer got another replacement gateway and same thing happened. Decided to pay the extra money and get the Samsung, I love the computer, Its fast has everything I need and more. Computer looks great as well, I always have people asking me about the laptop at school because of the cool looking red/black. Too date I have had no issues with this only thing that they could improve is batt life but what do you expect when watching blueray. This is the best laptop you can buy for the money. Handsdown and CNET actually just did a review on one without the Blueray and said it was the best as well.

    Great Laptop for the price!!!

I recently bought this laptop for my parents. Firstly, the system is fantastic. The speed of the processor, intel i3 is flawless. Why would you even need anything faster?? But its the world we live in today.... The HD 15.6" screen is sharp and beautiful. The graphics card isn't too bad, would have been nice to have had a more powerful one. If you are a gamer, this ain't for you. Spend the extra money and get a better graphics card with your laptop. The blue ray, good a little slow however, but overall good!! Keyboard, I particularly did NOT likeI might be a little picky here, but we all have our likes/dislikes. It was too soft for me. I know they were trying to have that apple laptop feel, but it wasn't for me. Overall: pros: light, fast, HD screen & blue ray, nice red color. cons: keyboard Good for the overall price

Decent laptop if you have the extra money

    Posted .

I got this laptop on black friday 2010 so I saved about 60 bucks and so far it's been worth it. I have an Acer desktop which I use more but I bought it to take to school and so far it's been pretty good to me. My main complaint, as is with other people, is the battery life. With the power saving settings on, it's still pretty short and inaccurate. There's a battery icon on the taskbar that tells you how much battery is left and often times it fluctuates (like saying 2 hours to 2 and a half hours to 30 minutes left, it's weird) so if you're using it on the go for an extended period of time, buy an extra battery pack (about $130) or expect only about threeish hours. 3 and a half if you're lucky. Other than that, that's about the worst problem I've had. It does take quite a while to boot up but that's not really an issue for me. If you're a little particular about it being faster then you can upgrade the memory from 4 to 8gb, which is what I plan on doing. For my first laptop, it's a pretty good deal. I mainly bought it for the blu ray option so I can use the HDMI port with a cable to my 37" tv and for blu ray movies. It's got a decent size screen and easy to use with the touch mouse pad. It's sensitive and works so that's good. A minor gripe is the graphics card. I forget what kind of card it is but the max resolution is like 1440x990 or maybe just a bit smaller. Not a problem for most people but I'm used to my Acer desktop at 1680x1050. Like I said, first laptop, no major problems. Can't compare it to anything but if you got the extra money and want the extra bells and whistles, such as blu ray rom, newer i3 processor, hdmi and extra usb and esata ports, then I would go with this. If you're on a budget, you can find a cheaper laptop without blu ray and hdmi for probably a few hundred bucks cheaper.

    Great Laptop for everyday use!

    Posted .

I am on my laptop everyday and my older HP about had it. So I was looking for an reasonably priced laptop with the number keypad. I didn't want the larger screen and it's harder to find a laptop that is smaller than 17" and still have the number keypad... well this one has it so I bought it two months ago and it works wonderfully! The screen resolution is noticeably better than my HP ( granted it was three years old... technology has improved). I love how the keys feel and the new flat mouse pad. I also like how the texture on the mouse pad is a little different... so you know where it stops... and it has four little lights at each corner and lights up when you use it. I also like the fact that it has a webcam built in for the price. Also, another note. I had a problem with the power cord with my HP. I had to replace it in less than a year... and the second one is already out of commission. This power cord seems to be more durable. Usually, I'm a diehard HP fan... but this Samsung was a great buy. I am not disappointed at all!

I bought this laptop two days ago to replace my fading HP tablet. So far so good. For $579.99 you get a lot with the laptop. The specs speak for itself: blu ray, wireless capability, WiMax, i3 processor, 500 GB... great to me. I only wish the battery had a longer life. Other than that I am satisfied!!

    great decision to buy this

I bought this to basically replace my desktop. I've had it for just a few days but so far I love it. The screen has nice crisp detail and the keyboard is excellent. It doesn't make those clicking noises that most make and the 10 pad is very convenient for me. It doesn't get even a little hot like our HP's all do. I've had a little issue with the display scrolling off on me but I'm not sure if that is something I'm doing or an issue I'll have to deal with later. I did get a great deal on it for 529 but it would still be worth full price with all of the extras this comes with -blue ray and wi max.

I fell for this laptop when I saw the red and black design. I know, I know, you don't buy a computer or a car because of the color but I absolutely love the Samsung design. I test drove it and liked the feel of the keys. Bought it from Best Buy because of their excellent financing and the way they have treated me over the years. I've used it for about a month...word processing and browsing the Internet...so far. It has been great and I've had no regrets about the purchase.

    Third times the charm

    Posted .

I bought my Samsung Dec 21st. Due to the holidays took it out of the box the next morning. Was getting used to the new computer and making sure Clear network worked. So I was satisfied at that point. I took the protective piece over the mouse area off the laptop and it pulled up a piece of the finish. Back to Best Buy. They exchanged the unit and transferring the Clear internet service took longer than the exchange. Dec 24th, 2 days after having the new laptop there appeared a "spot" in the screen toward the lower right area. It only showed when the background was light in color. It wasn't a pixle issue. Because I was out of town, I decided to wait until I returned to deal with it as it did not effect performance. BtW, I also purchased the Belkin easy transfer kit to transfer files from my old HP with Windows Vista. Was easy and worked a charm. Just read the instructions first. When I returned home I took my laptop back to Best Buy Dec 31st and exchanged again. They transferred my files. And again, it took near 20-30 minutes waiting on Clear to switch my service to the new internal modem. This time so far no futher cosmetic problems. It takes me about one minute 30-45 seconds from starting the computer to being on the internet. Much faster than my 2 year old HP . I have not detected any user issues. The mouse is "different" but downloading the manual from Samsung helped me to understand it. Battery life is about what I expected based on previous reviews. If you want three hours or more, this isn't for you. I would prefer more volume for the speakers. Also I learned that hitting the F11 key when on a website will expand the page to fill the screen and eliminate the task bars above and below the screen page. Maybe others were aware of that but i'm still a novice.lol. Overall the performance of the computer meets my needs. I'm sure others want every gizmo but if you do then you'll need to research all the specs and buy something more expensive. This is value for the money with the i3 chip and blue-ray. And I love the red color. That wasn't the deciding factor tfor the purchase though.
