Thank you for purchasing the Samsung HW-A470 and for sharing your review. I’m very sorry for the difficulties you’ve experienced with your Soundbar’s setup. We completely understand your frustrations, and we are here to help.
The A470 features two ways to connect to a TV; digital optical audio and Bluetooth wireless audio technology. If your TV is compatible with one of these two audio connections, you should have no issue connecting the soundbar to your TV. Follow the steps below to connect the soundbar to your TV via one of the two available connections:
An optical cable is a great way to connect your soundbar to your TV and the method we recommend using for the HW-A470. With otpical, you can also connect your devices (cable boxes, video game systems, and Blu-ray players) to the TV, and have the sound output from the TV to the soundbar.
1. With the TV and soundbar turned on, connect one end of a digital optical cable to the OPTICAL OUT port on the TV.
2. Then, connect the other end to the DIGITAL AUDIO IN (OPTICAL) port on the soundbar.
3. Press Source on the remote or soundbar, and then set the soundbar to the D.IN. setting.
4. Finally, on the TV, you need to set the speaker output to external speakers.
The TV's sound will now play from the soundbar.
Your soundbar is also compatible with a Bluetooth connection to the TV. To connect the soundbar wirelessly, follow the steps below:
1) Press the PAIR button on the remote to enter BT PAIRING mode. You can also press the SOURCE button on the top panel and then select BT. “BT” changes to “BT PAIRING” in a few seconds automatically or changes to “BT READY” if there is a connect record. If BT READY appears, press and hold the SOURCE button on the top panel of the Soundbar for more than 5 seconds to display BT PAIRING.
2) Select the Bluetooth sound mode on your TV (See your TV's user manual for assistance)
3) Select “[AV] Samsung Soundbar A470 Series” from the list on the TV’s screen. An available Soundbar is indicated with “Need Pairing” or “Paired” on the TV’s Bluetooth device list. To connect the TV to the Soundbar, select the message, and then establish a connection.
When the TV is connected, [TV Name] → “BT” appears on the Soundbar’s front display.
You should now hear TV sound from the Soundbar. Once you have connected your soundbar for the first time, use the “BT READY” mode to reconnect.
To further assist you in the functions and settings of your new soundbar, you can download the full user manual directly from Samsung’s website by clicking “Support” in the top right corner. Then go to “Manuals & Software” > “TVs & Home Theater” > “Home Theater” > “Sound Bars”. From there, you can select the HW-A470 under A Series.

Thank you for purchasing the Samsung HW-A470 and for sharing your feedback regarding the available adjustment settings and control with your Samsung TV remote.
As long as your soundbar is connected to your TV with an optical cable, you can control the volume and mute the soundbar using your Samsung TV's remote. The soundbar should also turn on and off with the TV. Other manufacturer's TV remotes have to be enabled on your soundbar. By default, Samsung TV remotes are enabled on your soundbar. If it isn't working, be sure the soundbar is powered on, then press and hold the WOOFER button up until ON - TV REMOTE appears on the display (about 5 seconds).
You can try manually optimizing your settings by pressing the SOUND MODE button on your remote, and then selecting the desired sound effect by choosing STANDARD, SURROUND SOUND, BASS BOOST, GAME, or ADAPTIVE.
There are three adjustments that can be made for bass and subwoofer:
1) Using the WOOFER button on the remote, you can adjust the volume of the subwoofer between -6 to +6 by toggling the button up or down. To set the subwoofer volume level to 0, press the button down
2) Adjust the bass control by pressing the SOUND CONTROL button (gear icon) on the remote control, then select BASS to increase the level. You can adjust the volume between -6 to +6 by using the Up/Down buttons.
3) Press the SOUND MODE button on your remote, and then select BASS BOOST mode. This will provide you with a larger emphasis on bass sound.
For precise audio adjustments, you can use the 7-band frequency equalizer to optimize the sound for your room acoustics.

I am sorry to hear that you are not completely satisfied with the out of box experience from your new Samsung Soundbar. You may want to try checking the sound format on your TV to ensure you are getting the best experience for a surround sound setup.
If your Digital Output Audio Format is set to PCM then you will likely notice decreased performance with surround sound audio systems. Dolby options are designed for surround systems (like 3.1.2 or 7.1), whereas PCM provides great sound quality for stereo speakers.
On a Samsung TV this setting can be found at Home > Settings > Sound > Expert Settings. (It can also be found in the Quick Settings.)
Additionally, some sources have their own volume control which might be set too low. Please check the volume control of the external device (cable box or satellite box, DVD, Blu-ray, etc.) connected to your TV or soundbar. Also, check the cable connection between an external device and the TV or soundbar and then try cable connection again.

By design, the surround speakers are supposed to simulate sounds happening behind the viewer. Therefore, most of the time the surround channels are only used for ambient sounds, which are naturally lower in volume; however, there are a few settings you can change to adjust the surround effect to your preference:
1) Make sure that the source (e.g. TV output) is sending surround channels to the Soundbar. If the source is not capable of surround, then set the Surround mode to OFF on the Soundbar by pressing the Surround button on the remote.
2) If the source has surround channels, select the desired Sound Mode from the Soundbar remote.
3) Increase the volume level of the surround speakers using the Sound Control button on the Soundbar remote control. Press the Sound Control button on the soundbar remote (looks like a gear), then select REAR LEVEL and use the Up/Down buttons to adjust the volume within a -6 to +6 range.

A good value on a well-designed soundbar.

Certainly better than I was expecting at this price. The bass is rich and smooth, without becoming boomy. The sound can fill the room if you crank it high enough, however, the rear speakers are quieter than I wish they were. They still get the job done, but I wish they were louder. This soundbar has multiple options for Dolby signals as well, including DTS, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, and Neo 2:5, if you're connecting via the optical cable. There is a noticeable difference between formats, which is good. There is also a dot-matrix display window on the front, hidden behind the fabric, that tells you what source you are connected to at startup. It also tells you what source you're switching to, and it briefly displays the volume level when you turn it up or down with the remote. There are also physical buttons on top for power, volume, and source select. The source select button doubles as the bluetooth pairing button if you hold it down long enough. Setup was remarkably simple: Connect both rear speaker cables to the jacks in the rear receiver, plug in the subwoofer, plug in the rear receiver, plug in the soundbar, and turn it on. Everything connected in about 15 seconds, and I was done. Bluetooth pairing was also incredibly easy. Just hold the BLUETOOTH button down until pairing activates, then look for the soundbar on your phone or tablet. Another cool feature with Bluetooth: The display window on the front of the soundbar (which is hidden most of the time) will briefly scroll the name of the device you've just connected via Bluetooth. For example, "Galaxy Tab" or "Motorola Phone" The remote is pretty sleek and ergonomic, and works well.

Decent soundbar, a tough compromise

I experimented with numerous videos, movies, tv shows, and music videos. My previous soundbar was a 3.1 channel Samsung model. I love Samsung soundbars - especially my previous 3.1 channel soundbar. The soundbar was packed extremely well. As you can see, the box was damaged in shipping, yet the soundbar, speakers, and subwoofer were all perfect. The instructions were available immediately upon opening. Set up was pretty straight forward - most set up time was cable management. The soundbar, speakers, and subwoofer are very clean and don't stand out too much. They fit well in any room. The soundbar performs well for music videos. The surround sound is fabulous and fills up the entire room. The bass is nice and can be adjusted quite a bit. It is truly a great option for a starter surround sound system. The dolby audio is a nice addition. Unfortunately, since the soundbar itself is a 2.1 channel, voices tend to suffer. I always feel that I am changing the volume because I cannot hear voices in a movie. Then, music begins in the movie and the sound level is way too high. It definitely hurts the experience of the movie. This applies to TV shows, YouTube videos, and any sports. Samsung does have a 'voice enchancement' feature which definitely helps when watching the news, a youtube video, or quiet movie. The overall experience can sound garbled though. I would love to see Samsung continue working on improving the 'voice enhancement' feature. The surround sound is great for movies and music, but does not help with TV shows or YouTube videos. It honestly becomes an annoyance. Overall, if you want surround sound - this system is a great starter. The sound is full, subwoofer has a great thump, and gives you a very affordable surround experience. However, I'd recommend a 3.1 channel setup (specifically a Samsung Q60B). If you really want surround sound, spend the extra for a 5.1.2 channel setup (again, I would head straight for another Samsung.) ***I received this product at a discounted price for review.

They are more of accent sound. You can adjust them +/- 6 but no higher then that. The do get louder as the bar volume goes up. It's not real surround sound. Need to have the rear speakers close to you to really hear sound.
