After owning a Samsung - 5 disc carousel / surround sound system, I had hoped from the reviews that this might be a nice replacement to it. The sound quality was ok but not what I expected. The setup was very straight forward and simple. The rear wireless system was nice even though there are wires from the receiver unit to the speakers but that was ok because they were going to be hidden anyways. The main unit self linked to the receiver and there was nothing hard about the setup screen. The mids and highs were really crisp and clear however the bass speaker left a lot to be desired. I had the gain turned up to the max and even with a lot of bass signal from the video, the bass was very weak and unresponsive. The old carousel system would rattle the windows if I wanted it to. I was also reading that though this system would support 3D videos, i did not support 4K. As I only have a 1080P/ 3D system, for he moment it was not an issue but one to pay attention to. The real problem started when tried to stream a movie with VUDU. My wifi is through a major cable provider and I have a 60mb download speed. While trying to watch the movie, the video would pause every 5 seconds then play again. It was extremely annoying. I tried to use the Youtube app but ended up with the same results. I did make sure as the reviews suggested to update the unit before I started setting it up. The final straw was while switching between the menu options, the unit would not allow you to make another selection in the menu for several seconds after you finished with one. Even switching between input modes took awhile. Someone else noted this in the reviews and I had hoped it was just an isolated issue. I took the unit back and explained what was happening and BestBuy took it back with absolutely no issues.

DVD Sound Is Off If Forward Playback is Sped Up

On page 28 of the manual for the HT-J5500W home entertainment system, it reads “The product does not play sound in Search, Slow, or Step mode.” I took this to mean that it is supposed to continue to play sound during fast motion FORWARD play (at last at the lower end of the faster forward speeds). For example, my PC media player will continue to play the DVD sound track at 1.2X, 1.4X or 2X normal forward speed (although the sound pitch and speed is, of course, higher and faster than normal, respectively; at 4X, 8X or 16X speeds, the PC cuts off the sound track). After reading this page in the Samsung manual, I was expecting that this unit would also play the sound track if the playback was sped up somewhat so that a movie could be viewed in a shorter time, however, the sound cuts out at ANY faster forward speed when the >> button on the remote is pressed. I then found the statement “The home theater does not play sound during fast playback, slow playback, and step motion playback.” on page 44 in the Appendix/Troubleshooting section of the manual. I think that the first part of the manual is ambiguous and misleading and that Samsung can certainly do a better job with its documentation.

    Difficult to Use

It is impossible to use device without remote control and the key sequence for anything other than turning device on and off or adjusting volume involves random key sequences that can number more than 7 strokes. The complexity will become clear when the first time user opens the 40+ page user's manual and discovers that more than 90% is devoted to remote control use. Universal remote use is another issue. I have a Samsung TV with a fairly simple remote which will perform some home theater system functions. In many cases a function can be started, but not finished, with the TV remote. Unless you use the system every day or have an extremely good memory, you are going to be using the user's manual on a regular basis, so be sure to make a few copies because the pages will wear out rapidly

I have all sorts of Samsung products. This one left a bad taste for me at least. I have a 65" TV that i wanted to pair up with a surround sound. This surround sound really kinda sucked at least for me. It paired up great and did what it was supposed to do. Just not loud enough, surround doesn't work with Plex (for those of you who know what that is). Also, the wireless speakers plug into a separate receiver box. Why not plug into a wireless sub-woofer and skip the extra box and power consuming devices. I tried a Samsung soundbar after this, TV sound sucked, but music sounded great. After that I tried a Vizio soundbar with wireless sub-woofer and satellite speakers. LOVE IT. Go figure, a Vizio beat out Samsung.

    Semi Surround Sound

I was replacing an older Panasonic system that had died. I was sold on the Samsung based on size/style of speakers and price. It was very easy to install, even for a non-Geek like me. However. The surround sound ONLY comes out of the front speakers! The directions say the back speakers (the real part of surround sound) will only work on 'certai. Blu-ray movies, never on TV'. What a disappointment! So, the semi-surround sound from the front speakers has good quality, but I have never yet heard from the back speakers. OH, and no remote was included!! Real bummer! Had to go purchase a universal remote. Another disaster.

I bought the BluRay surround sound system several years ago and it all worked great for about 3 months. After 3 months the sound only works while watching the built in apps or a movie, it doesn’t work anymore when I am watching DirecTV. I have had several other issues and have had to reset all the settings numerous times. I would not recommend, especially for what it cost!

Bought the HT-J5500W today and its just not what I hoped for. The speakers aren't too bad but the rear "wireless" is not worth it. Tried a few movies but they dont work. They test just fine but no sound while watching a movie. Then theres the volume. I'm watching a movie and can't turn the volume up or down. The display just says not available. It only seems to work while I have the FM tuner going.

I purchased this because my surround sound that I had for 8 years was making noises. We bought this in hopes that it would sound a lot like the Samsung surround sound we have now. I was less than impressed with this when I hooked everything up! I returned it and cleaned up my old one and cant get over how much better my old one sounds. I will keep looking for a better quality surround sound for the time being.

I had this system for a little over a year. The system was a good solution for an in the box home theater system. Good accurate sound and medium amount of bass. The receiver is no longer playing through the center speaker and the subwoofer conveniently a week outside of the year warranty. I was expecting more longevity from Samsung.

Upon purchasing the unit I had to return it just a week later for a faulty dvd player. The new one is working as it should. The sound is not the best. Only time you ever hear anything out of the rear speakers is if the volume is way up and only during a movie. Playing the radio is not even possible. The antenna provided won't even pick up local channels.

This entertainment system does some unexpected things. When I turn on my tv this thing will come on by itself. It turns my TV speakers off. I then have to use my TV menu to turn them back on. I think Samsung has infected my Visio TV. Right now I leave it unplugged until I am going to use it. Will get the Geek Squad to check it out after the Holidays.

The depths of the sound were simply not strong enough to be noticeable. The rear satellite speakers although a good design and easy to set up were non existent even after changing the rear surround configuration to be as loud as possible. Unfortunately I was displeased and returned the item for the Polk SB1+.

Good system except when you are playing CDs...it doesnt auto start again, you have to go and push play again when the CD ends... The surround wirless speakers only play when you are watching a DVD Samsung is very impressive all the time, this one surprised me, as I am normally very impressed.

I bought this for my boyfriend and he ended up returning this product due to the sound not being as good as we had hoped it sounded. We wanted to use this for sound quality when watching movies and it wasn’t as good as we hoped.

My second Samsung home theater, the first one would start the DVDs tray open out of the blue. Or just change function for no reason. The new one(3 weeks new) remote would not work or manual change of function not work. Had to ship it back to Samsung. They have it now. Sorry product.

Purchase unit to replace similar model that was fried due to power surge. Wanted wireless rear speakers due to room configuration. Spent hours trying to get rear speakers to function. They only worked with some bluray, not all. Did not work with tv, cd, dvd, or Internet radio!

This was an open box item that I purchased. I purchased the protection plan with the Blu-Ray Home Theater System and glad that I did. When we opened the box, the remote control was missing. Geek Squad ordered the remote for me and when I receive it I will update this review.

Had issues within first year of system not playing sound. Had to send back to Samsung, who did provide free shipping label to ship as well as shipped it back to me for free once fixed. Of course, you have a refurbished system once it is shipped out.

Replaced zapped Samsung surround with what appeared to be same just newer model. Not so. Back surround speakers only work with dvd. Not tv, music, or streaming. Page 44 under troubleshooting states so. Unacceptable. The last set did great. This one sux. Returning to store.

The surround sound is not worth the price of paying over $400 for it. It does not look up directly to the and using Netflix does not utilize the surround sound only putting in a DVD or Blu-ray gives the full experience.
