Bright 4K@120Hz; but dead pixels, banding, and DSE

I bought this TV because I want a large 4K@120HZ panel for PC use and gaming. Originally I bought a LG C1, but it didn't get very bright and the brightness would constantly change to prevent burn-in. In comparison, the QN90A is very bright and stays bright consistently. I also think the QN90A has a much nicer stand than the LG C1, but I wish the power cable was a bit longer. There's some blooming around bright content surrounded by black areas, but reducing local dimming to low helps mitigate that. It also has a new anti-glare coating which can shift the colors a bit depending on your viewing angle. I'm currently on my 2nd QN90A, and both had multiple dead pixels, DSE, and vertical banding. The 2nd one has much more noticeable vertical banding, and two dead pixels in the center of the screen. For PC monitor use is a deal-breaker for me. If it wasn't for my bad panel lottery luck, I'd give this TV 5 stars because 4K PC gaming @ 120Hz in HDR is a sight to behold. I'm going to request another exchange, but it's a bummer panel issues like this pass Samsung's QC.

      Hi Gutter,

Thank you for choosing Samsung's QN90A Neo QLED 4K TV and for sharing details of your image quality. Quantum Matrix Technology is powered by exclusive Mini LED designed technology engineered to give you hyper-focused brightness and dimming in all the right areas. To optimize your picture quality, please be sure your firmware is up to date with version 1506.0 which includes picture quality updates. You can check this by going to: Settings > Support > Software Update.

If the picture you are seeing are not to your liking after updating the TV's firmware, there are several picture settings you may want to try adjusting.

You can select the Picture Mode that provides the best viewing experience. Go to Home > Settings > Picture > Picture Mode
      1) Standard: Is the default mode suitable for general viewing environments.
      2) Natural: Reduces eye strain for a comfortable viewing experience.
      3) Movie: Is suitable for watching TV or movies in a dark room.
      4) Dynamic: Makes the picture brighter and clearer in bright viewing environments.
      5) Filmmaker Mode: You can watch the source content (e.g., movie) as it is. If the image is defined as Filmmaker Mode, it will automatically switch to Filmmaker Mode while watching.

You can also go to: Settings > Picture > Expert Settings > to manually fine tune your image.

Intelligent Mode also enables the TV to recognize and analyze the surroundings, noise, content, and your usage patterns to provide the best viewing experience. You can enable Intelligent Mode by going to Home > Settings > General > Intelligent Mode Settings. Adaptive Picture, which is among the options, optimizes brightness and provides the best picture quality in real time, based on the lighting condition and the content you're viewing.

I hope you can use these adjustment recommendations to set the image to your liking. This TV was purchased for my LR - a very bright sunlit room. During the day, my previous LED TV was virtually unwatchable as it washed out in the bright light. As a first priority, I began my search for a TV with a bright picture. All reviews pointed straight to this model as the brightest on the market - without peer. They’re all right. At the most sun-drenched time of day, this TV remains very bright, easily overcoming the sunlight. First priority, satisfied in spades. But it’s not just bright, the color intensity and sharpness of the picture just pops. And it’s ability to upscale regular HD programming virtually to 4K image quality is impressive. My one concern so far is a constant struggle with lip-sync issues between this TV and my existing, older sound bar; an issue I didn’t have with my older TV. As of now, I’m unsure whether that’s an issue with this TV model, or one of communication between the new tech of this TV and older tech of my current sound bar. Would getting Samsung sound bars solve the problem? Or would spending a lot more money leave me with the same issue? Pending resolution of the lip sync issues, I’m thrilled with this TV and wish I’d splurged sooner.

Full disclosure, I got this TV for my mother as a Christ mas Gift. I had Geek Squad come out to our home to set it up. And I'm glad I did because the center base stand of the TV is quite heavy. Solid metal which makes it very sturdy. Once the agent had the TV set up and my mom got to use it for the first time, it was clear this was her favorite TV she ever owned. The first thing she said to me after, watching one of her favorite shows, was "I don't need my glasses to watch TV anymore!" So while it is not mine, I have had the pleasure of seeing it in action many times. and I know other reviewers have said the upscaling on Samsung QLED TVs is good, but even Over The Air HD broadcasts looked like clean 4K with some nice HDR juiced up in there.

I know the screen is LCD but blacks are deep and colors are vivid. You will see minor blooming on dark scenes but it’s tolerable. Brightness is great I find setting mine to 30 is more then enough light. Had a Sony X90J that I returned for this Samsung QN90A and have no regrets. The Samsung build quality is pristine.

I've had the Samsung for two years now. It is excellent! I have not seen any other TV that compares to it. It was easy to calibrate, picture quality is outstanding. I do have sound going to Bose audio, so I can't comment on the internal sound quality as I have never used it. And, I really have recommended it to my friends and they are very satisfied with their TVs too.

This is an amazing TV, black levels just short of OLED, colors that pop, and brightness that can explode your eyeballs! The full array micro LED backlight does a really good job of achieving quality black level... its really good! Now... I actually bought this to function as a giant computer monitor and it excels at this task. it has Game mode with super low latency, Free sync and G-sync compatible so no more Vsync or screen tearing. 4:4:4 Chroma sampling with 10 bit color and full range support. You get this in both SDR and HDR. Then, when you are finished with a day of work or gaming you have all the built in streaming apps with their own SDR and HDR settings so your PC calibration stays intact. For anyone thinking about OLED as a computer monitor and have concerns about burn in and text issues due to pixel color order... this is your TV / Monitor!

Great Tv, but not great for PC use

This will be an honest review in regards to picture quality etc. Even though I didn't keep this tv it was still great for most use cases. I personally bought this for my pc as it was the smallest size with the highest specs. Pros: Very good brightness levels and contrast. Fast response time, 4k 120hz worked correctly. Glossy screen but still great with combating reflections. Cons: The backlight dimming algorithm was way too aggressive in its highest setting. When browsing the desktop or watching any video with dark scenes the local dimming will dim any small details greatly. To the point that the white mouse cursor will almost disappear on a black background. If the local dimming setting is set to low this issue will be mitigated greatly, however, with the trade off that blooming on almost everything will be much more pronounced. Obviously this isn't meant for pc gaming, but I did want a larger screen than most monitors and was trying to see if there was a substitute for the 48" oled. So if the above scenario's do not bother you or its not meant for close up pc or console gaming than it is still a great tv with great picture quality in many other situations.

Great tv for a deal. Got one open-box and it is holding up well with no signs of inconsistent picture quality. I use it for gaming primarily (120hz refresh is why I bought this one), and the app system is decent when I want to watch YouTube quickly. Sound is decent but get a sound bar if you want actual stereo sound. We will see how is holds up. If it breaks I sure will update this review. Only regret is not getting an OLED but the cost is higher.

My Samsung QN90A 50” Neo QLED TV is the epitome of the best TV on the market here in 2021. The brightness of this TV is stunning and the color quality is the best brilliant color match I have ever had the honor to watch. The LG OLED C1 was suppose to be the best new TV on the market for a few hundreds $ more. Not the case, the Samsung is by far a brighter TV with a better color quality of a pure color matrix. I am a true Samsung fan going forward. It doesn’t get any better than this. I would recommend this TV to anyone looking for the best 2021 TV on the marketplace @ a great price point as well. Well done Samsung!!!!

I have my Xbox conned to the HDMI (4 I think)port for game conceals so I get the better refresh rates and pest picture quality also use the Xbox for all my streaming content. Overall, this television has performed well and I’m happy with my purchase. There is almost no blooming, vibrant colors, deep black levels, and brightness levels more than sufficient to overcome the sun shining into the space. All of the apps I use were available on the TV and performed very well with no crashes. Sound quality is decent. The one problem I have so far is with the operating system. It has been sluggish at times. Not sure if it’s due to the number of apps installed or what, but it’s noticeable. Hopefully, it will be addressed with an software update.

Excellent TV- the first thing to do, though, is to go to rtings.com (great site for consumer electronics reviews/guidance) and look up their recommended settings and adjust to those. The factory settings are horrible and do not do the screen justice. Once you reset to rtings.com settings: Glorious. The upscaling from HD feed is quite remarkable.

Out of all the TVs I've had in my bedroom this has been one of the best. I spent a long time going between the LG C1 and this, and ended up actually cancelling an order on an LG C1 and going for this beauty instead. Main reason: longevity. Even with all tests showing that OLEDs take a long time receive some sort of permanent retention (around 5 years according to RTINGs testing) there's just something about not having to worry about the display ending up with some sort of image retention. Also, for those who may wonder, the 50" model does have a 2.1 port, I was worried about that considering the 43" does NOT have one.
