QN90D Issues

Bought a 50 inch QN90D and returned after a week. The local dimming feature is not that great, too much of a halo effect and blooming on the screen. That could be due to not having as many dimming zones as larger TV's but this is still a "premium" TV and inexcusable. When watching sports, even when turning off picture clarity settings there seemed to be hiccups and not as smooth.
Finally, the worst thing about this model is the picture flickering on the left side of the screen as if the backlight was failing (video below). I came across others with this size TV mentioning the same issue. This seems like a Samsung "quality control" issue and "normal behavior" after researching online and having a video conference with Samsung showing them the problem. Apparently, it cannot be solved through software. Online I found the following: "The cause is the power module board which has several unshielded electromagnetic coils that pass very close to the wires that control a region of the screen LEDs. The solution was simple but required opening the back cover, changing the route of the LED strips."
I have since replaced this TV with a different Mini LED and have been much happier.

Delivery and set up was excellent. My only issue is, it freezes up when watching the Spectrum app pretty often. I love the TV.

movielover,
Thank you for sharing details of your experience with the Spectrum app. This may be related to your network connection and quality. We suggest you try the following:
1. Use 5G Wi-Fi if possible 2. Try wired LAN if available 3. Try repositioning the router so there are no obstacles between your TV and the router
Please also be sure you are running the latest firmware. You can check to see what software version your TV is using and if there is an available update through the settings on your TV. Go to: Settings > Support > Software Update.
You may want to enable automatic updates for conveniences. Go to Settings > Support > Software Update, then select Auto Update.
Additionally, to optimize the TV’s performance, please also try running Device Care, which improves your apps performance by freeing up unused cached memory and closes background apps. Go to: Settings > Support > Open e-Manual, then select Device Care.
I hope these tips help improve your streaming experience. If you need further help, please call us at 1-800-SAMSUNG, 8AM - 12AM EST, 7 days a week. Or visit us on the Samsung website and click on the ‘Support’ link for: • LiveChat • Manuals, Software, & Warranty Info

Day old product stopped working on me. I know sounds like a user issue its not. The internal tv volume dot stuck in volume down and is always turning the volume down. Tried everything disconnected the remote, hard reset . Unplugging external sources. Nothing seemed to fix it. Went to customer support talked to 3 different people to get there opinions and all of them said to return the tv it’s defective.

Dhhdjdj,
It's unfortunate to hear of your experience. It sounds like this may have been an issue with the remote, not the QN90D TV itself. Resetting the remote itself may resolve the volume fluctuations.
Here's how to fully reset and re-pair your remote: 1. Press and hold Return and Microphone buttons (diagonally up and to the right of Return). This will reset the remote. 2. Stand within 1 foot of the TV and press and hold Return and Play/Pause simultaneously for at least 5 seconds or until a message appears on your TV indicating that the remote is now connected 3. Please also clean the upper edge of the remote control pad, as well as the sensor on your TV itself (located below the Samsung logo).
If you’re still experiencing issues with the remote, please also try the following: - Unplug the TV for 30 seconds, and plug it back in. - Try moving closer to the TV and re-pairing. - Check to see if your remote is charged: Settings > All Settings > General & Privacy > Power and Energy Saving > Available Remote Battery - Check for available firmware updates on your TV: Settings > Support > Software Update > Update Now
I hope the above helps. Should the issue persist, please contact Samsung Support at 1-800-SAMSUNG, 8AM - 12AM EST, 7 days a week. Our LiveChat agents are also available by clicking on the ‘Support’ link on our website.

Absolutely devastated. It was perfect for two days....
I took a chance and decided to go BIG as this was a Christmas gift. Today there is no picture only sound. I have tried everything except loading it back in my car and taking it back to Best Buy. I have always owned Samsung TV's and never had any issues.

If you mostly watch cable TV or streaming like most of us you will be disappointed with this TV. The way that newer TV’s do upscaling now looks horrible. They now do it by applying noise reduction (which removes all the fine detail) and then add sharpness to try and bring out what’s left of the detail. It tends to look fake and reminds me of overly sharpened distortion like when you set the sharpness setting too high. My old 2016 TV that uses the older technology does a much better, natural job of upscaling. It’s sad that everyone just accepts this awful picture quality and says, “yeah, it’s not going to look good unless you’re watching 4K content” That’s not true, it all depends on the TV technology. My cable TV picture on my old 2016 TV is really good. I’m actually impressed when you consider the amount of compression that the cable company uses. If my old TV can make cable TV look good then why can’t a 2024 TV ???
I have two of the exact same cable boxes so I set up my old 2016 TV right next to the QN90D and set both boxes to the same channel to do a comparison. My old TV blows the QN90D away, the picture is just so much more cleaner/clearer as where the QN90D picture looks too busy and just plain distorted most of the time. I even tried switching the HDMI cables just to make sure one box wasn’t putting out a better picture than the other.
The QN90D has a problem with definition, if a person is not close to the camera or zoomed in on they are blurry/look out of focus. If they are moving it’s even worse, then they look like a bleeding pastel painting with no detail and that’s with using the Motion settings. The TV seems to focus on whatever is in the center of the screen and the sides get distorted. This is really noticeable when there are more than two people in the scene. For instance, I watch the same stock market TV show every morning at 9:00 and there is a man sitting in the middle and there is a man on both sides of him. He is fairly clear where as the guys on both sides of him appear to be out of focus. It reminds me of a fish eye camera lens effect. I was watching a scene where two people were sitting at a table, one at each end, each one was about an inch away from the edge of the TV screen. They looked totally out of focus on the QN90D. However, all these same scenes look equally clear on my old 2016 TV. Maybe TV manufacturers should go back to using the older technology that actually worked.
The QN90D uses AI processing which I knew would be a bad idea and after seeing it in action I see I was right. It kept enhances certain things on the screen, mainly faces, but at the expense of blurring out other parts of the screen. If you’re watching new content that you’ve never seen before then you might know its happening. However, while watching movies and such that I’ve seen many times before, even commercials it was very obvious, it totally ruined the viewing experience. It's blurring all the little details in the background that I enjoy seeing just to enhance the pores in the person's face that's closest to the camera. One could say that it's ruining the Directors intent. If a Director wanted an actors face closest to camera to be enhanced and the actor standing behind him, mocking and making funny faces behind that actors back to be blurred the Director would have had shot it that way. I don’t want to have an AI generated world forced on me, I just want to be able to see images on TV the same way as I see them in real life.
I personally thought the picture quality was horrible on this TV and returned it. I couldn’t wait to get my old 2016 Samsung back up on the wall so I could actually enjoy watching TV again.
P.S.
An employer of Samsung is going to respond this review and list directions for how to use the Picture Setting to make it look better. I know how to calibrate a TV, there is nothing that can be done. It's the new technology that they're using. Unfortunately, they keep creating cheaper technologies to use when manufacturing as a way to save money and boost profits at the expense of making a TV that actually provides good picture quality. It’s not just Samsung that is doing this, I also tried and returned a different brand TV for the same reasons. They need to go back to using the older technology from 2016-2018.
