Great picture!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The only thing semi frustrating about the tv isn't about the tv at all, it's the base. The base used on the Samsung TVs now come out of the center but stretch so far to either side you have to have a bigger stand for it to sit on. Had to buy a new TV stand because the bases legs spread so wide. A minor detail, but something to keep in mind when purchasing.

Big screen on a budget
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Right off the bat I'll admit that for some folks a 58-inch screen may not be considered a big screen . . . not in this day and age when the screens are getting larger and larger. Other folks going from a 32 inch screen to a 58 inch screen however might differ. It's all about perspective. In this same vein of thought I might point out that a lot of what folks write and say about any product, including this TV, is subjective. Refresh rates. Sound. Picture. Connectivity. Etc. . . . what may work well for one person, may not be so great for another. While one person may think the picture is the best they've ever seen, another may feel as if it is not very clear. So my best advice is this . . . check the TV out yourself. That said, this is a review . . . and reviews help guide a person into deciding whether to even look at a TV so here goes. Price: I suspect this may be the one thing most everyone can agree on. I purchased this TV yesterday for $500 (well technically $499.99). Originally I was looking at 48-50 inch TVs in this price range (and some were even more . . . granted some also were ultra high def and/or had higher refresh rates of 120 hz or higher.) To be honest I was going to go with a 48-50 inch screen until I saw the price on this 58 inch . . . for the size it's hard to beat. A+ Size: Speaking of the size . . . as a guy I know we're supposed to say you can never have too big a TV or too much horsepower in a car. That said, I was concerned as I was looking at replacing a 50-inch Panasonic plasma TV. However, with the thin bezel of the Samsung (compared to the wider bezel of the Panasonic TV), the extra 8 inches meant the TV did not seem too large in the room. As a side note, when the sales associate wheeled out the overly large TV in its cardboard packaging I was started to wonder if I had gone overboard -- but as you might surmise the packaging was much bigger than the TV to prevent damage in transport/shipping. A+ Smart TV: Truthfully, I read a lot about smart TVs and it seems as though many folks have had issues with slow and/or buggy internet access (and not just with Samsung TVs) and so I really didn't care for a TV with Smart access. In fact, I wish manufacturers would either a) offer dumb TVs at a better price point or b) offer dumb TVs at the same price point, but use better components . . . but that's probably just me. Originally I was looking at a 48-inch dumb TV by Samsung (at a great price of $380), but after comparing sizes in the store I began to think I would like a larger TV (see -- it is a guy thing!) I can really not offer much info on the Smart TV components of this TV since I have purposefully opted to not enable those components and will continue to use my Roku 3 to access Netflix. Not Graded Audio/Visual In/Out Connections: For me this TV worked, although I could see how having only two HDMIs could be a problem depending on what and how many external devices folks are hooking up to this TV. I originally had a bit of a concern as well with the conjoined composite/component connections as I had my DVD using component wires to my old TV and my wife had her Wii connected with composite wires. With this TV you can hook up component OR composite cables, but not both at the same time. Again, this could be an issue. In my case, due to my limited number of devices (Roku, DVD and Wii) this was not an issue. C Sound: Remember what I said at the beginning of this review about people's opinions being subjective? My wife found the sound to be fine. I think it sounds a bit tinny without enough bass. If push came to shove I would agree with many other reviewers who said the sound could be better, but for watching the news and over the air TV programs the TV's speakers are acceptable. For movies (and football games when I want to really have some sound of the crowds, refs, etc.) I intend to use either my Yamaha surround system or Sennheiser wireless headphones for the most immersive movie watching experience. C Picture/Display: OK, for me next to reliability the most important factor with any TV is the picture because let's face it . . . it really is all about the picture. Again, some folks in various reviews say the picture is the best thing they've ever seen . . . while others say it is one step above watching a cardboard box. My wife says the picture is better than our Panasonic plasma TV -- and she does have an eye for this sort of thing. Me . . . I thought the picture was comparable or maybe just slightly better. The display is certainly much brighter (even after dialing up the settings on my 2008 Panasonic). I thought some images seemed pretty sharp, while other content seemed to not be quite as crisp looking . . . how much of this is due to the content . . . I am unsure. I do know (as you may know) that you will most likely not get that hyper realistic (soap opera effect) looking picture since this TV has a 60 hz refresh rate . . . some folks seem to like the effect . . . others not so much. Speaking of the refresh rate . . . if you're like me you may have been wrestling over the idea of whether you should stick with the 60 hz refresh rate or go with 120 hz or higher. Again . . . it's all subjective. Some folks say fast action in movies or sports is fine . . . other folks say this TV doesn't seem all that great. Granted, it's been less than a day, but I will say I didn't see many -- if any -- problems while watching a bit of yesterday's Sunday Night pre-season NFL game . . . or the women's beach volleyball tournament (don't judge me ;) . . . it just happened to be on while I was setting up the TV. Really.) So what about the 1080p vs. ultra high def? For me it came down to two things. First, most of what I am going to be viewing right now is not coming through in ultra high def . . . and perhaps just as importantly to me . . . I am not willing to pay the extra premium for what may be a bit of gain in the picture quality. A If I could change one thing I would . . . Well actually there would be a few things. First and foremost, this Samsung TV does not allow one to manually add TV channels. While this may not be a concern for folks on satellite, cable or in a metropolitan area, where I live I must use a roof mounted antenna that must be rotated to bring in the signals which come in from different directions. According to a Samsung tech, there is no way to manually add a station and if one rotates an antenna and re-scans for signals you will lose the signals (stations) you picked up before you rotated the antenna. So . . . in my case . . . it appears as though I have two options: a) leave the antenna in one place and pick up three stations (well technically 10 stations in total) or b) rotate the antenna and rescan when I want to attempt to pick up the other stations broadcasting their signal from another direction. The second issue . . . I do not like the TV stand. This is a large TV and all of the support is on one relatively small 5-6 inch support that attaches to a base. Unlike other large TVs that use a wider support attached to the base or outrigger legs, having this single, small support allows the TV to easily rock. With five cats this is a potential issue. Don't laugh, but I intend to remedy this issue by supporting the two sides with some wooden 2 x 4s to prop it in place and reduce any wobbling. Finally, while it all worked out for me . . . I would have liked to see a separate component and composite hook up . . . as well as another one or two HDMI connections. Now, if you've read all of this you may be wondering on my final thoughts . . . or more importantly . . . would I buy this again if given the choice or would I recommend it? The answer is yes . . . if you are looking for a decent sized TV at a budget price with the caveat being there are certainly better TVs out there in terms of picture, sound, features, etc. but most I suspect would not be at this price point.
