Samsung - 990 EVO SSD 2TB Internal SSD PCIe Gen 4x4 | Gen 5x2 M.2 Summary: Good value and performance. Pros: * Performance. The NVMe storage performs well. I wasn't able to achieve 5000 MB/s stated on the box, but for real world use this unit delivers almost as much. * Capacity. High capacity in a small form factor at a decent price point still is a struggle to find. This unit checked all of the boxes. * Software. The management software is pretty sleek. You get it by downloading it from the website. The software lets you benchmark, view disk and performance properties for the disk, as well as clone your original [boot] (or other) disk if you're planning on replacing it with this disk as an upgrade. Cons: * Performance. I tried different variations of tests. But no matter the combination of settings and install methods (external USB-C adaptor, or NVMe slot on new laptop), I couldn't quite get to the theoretical maximum throughput advertised. I tried using Samsung's own Samsung Magician software, but the results were similar. Not really a problem, as this pretty typical. But if this important to you, it's something to consider. Use: Depending on real world performance I was going to use this as either boot or data volume for gaming binaries. To make things easier, I opted for secondary data disk for game binaries. The games load substantially faster than the original OEM disk equipped with the laptop. What is "faster?" Its relative and depends on your level of patience, so I took some screen shots of benchmarks to provide numbers. It is also much larger. Now I can install all of my games without having to play musical chairs due to space. Overall, this is a good value and NVMe storage performance is always the way to go these days - if that needs saying.

The Samsung EVO is all about affordability thus affording a larger capacity yet sacrificing performance. This would not be best for gaming, but, more for the average user that enjoys more speed when paired with a 4.0 Pcie or 5.0 Pcie interface. I would say this is best suited for desktop use for power consumption not being an issue. The TLC NAND flash memory is mainly part of the reduced cost and has Less expected longevity, approximately 3 to 5 years depending on the user. The pro version uses the MLC NAND flash memory which offers true Performance and longevity. Still read and write speeds are impressive. See Attached Test. I did notice the PC boots a little slower, however, not terrible. I do music production and found it did ok when mixing multiple tracks. No crashes or hesitations. The Samsung magician software does a good job of cloning and Maintaining the drive. There are many options including performance Enhancements. Samsung also combined the cloning and maintaining all in one interface. The other nice thing when cloning using a C port, found 147mps transfer speeds. So, if you need more storage and don’t want to break the bank then Trusting Samsung is still the best innovative product out there. In a nut shell Ease and speed of cloning to the new drive Decent speed with more storage at a lower cost Samsung quality!

Very easy installation, great speed, and rock-solid reliability. What more would you ask for a storage drive at this price point? Are there better? Maybe, but the value factor on this one is high enough that I would go back and buy another if the need arises.

While I would no longer consider myself a technophile, I am certainly no slouch when it comes to understanding hardware but it had been a long time since I last opened up a tower and inserted my own accessory or upgrade. Well, I'm glad I dusted off the old know-how and did with this hard drive because it's just what the doctor ordered. I'm not a heavy video editor but my 7 year old drone does take 4K video footage and editing these 10 minutes flights over a span of a few years has eaten up all my hard drive space. Now, not only am I able to save hundreds of hours of additional footage, but the read/write speeds allow me to use this drive to edit as well. To fully test out this SSD I installed Starfield on it and picked up where I left off. No issues what-so-ever. If you're looking for some additional storage for your tower, I would highly recommend this SSD. Samsung is a trusted name for me in so many areas, and I can now add computer hardware to it. I don't think you'll go wrong with this hard drive. Good luck!

A Great Upgrade for Speed and Efficiency

I wanted to upgrade the boot drive on my Dell XPS desktop that I use for AutoCAD and Graphics. An initial requirement of my need was for a larger capacity drive that could load the programs at start up quickly. Features of the Samsung SSD 990 EVO seemed more advanced than the recommended upgrade that a software program I used to help me determine what would work in that model computer recommended. The read/write speeds of 5,000 MB/s and 4200 MB/s was another feature that made me interested in this Samsung drive and the results are spot on or close to it. With the design of this SSD, I knew that I would be able to open more than one large file at the same time, which is often a requirement of my work. Another feature of this drive that appealed to me was the ‘heat spreader’ label which has been designed to help control the thermal aspects of the NAND chip. Being built on the M.2 2280 Form Factor seemed to be another plus. The SSD also uses an interface protocol of either PCIe 4.0 x 4 or 5.0 x2 / NV Me 2.0. The 2000 gigabyte or 2 TB capacity added to these other features made this the logical choice. It is well known in the industry that Samsung has some of the best software available and the software that they provide to set up the drive is no exception. The Samsung Magician was an immense help in setting this drive up. I was initially concerned about the SSD having no DRAM, but the design of the hardware uses a HMB (Host Memory Buffer) of 64 MBs to link to the host processor’s DRAM, and the design of the SSD achieves optimum performance without even a DRAM cache. This allows for faster loading speeds and for accessing larger files, which is what I needed. The Samsung SSD 990 EVO 2 TB Internal drive does not use a device driver, but instead is equipped with the Samsung Piccolo controller which interfaces with a 133-layer TLC NAND flash. Installation was smooth as the desktop does not have the screws to contend with that the laptop computer design has and the disk was extremely easy to install. I did have to move files from the old disc onto an external drive temporarily and reload programs on the newer drive as well as transport the files back to the new disk. I am pleased with the results and with the price of the drive compared to others of similar or lessor quality, I would recommend this specific drive as an upgrade without any hesitation at all.

I bought this SSD because it was on sale at a price point that was too good to pass up. I’m using it as my boot drive, and if I had a better motherboard, I would’ve gone with the “Pro” SSD. However, as my motherboard is a bit outdated and does not support the faster interfaces, this SSD was perfect for the price. I was surprised by how cool it runs under heavy usage. I did not use a heatsink for it, but I did not feel I needed one from the data I monitored. With that said, I think this SSD is good depending on your usage. Go with the “Pro” if you have a newer motherboard that supports the faster speeds. Go with the “Evo” if you want to stay within a certain budget and still have a fast/efficient SSD.

I'm generally a fan of Samsung NVME drives, but this one has left me scratching my head. It's like they're intentionally trying to mislead consumers with branding that does not reflect the quality of this drive. Let's start with the PCI-E branding. Packaging and website listings both put this at PCI-E 4.0 x4 /5.0 x2. The problem is that people are going to see PCI-E 5.0 and think this is faster than a 4.0 drive and that's just not the case. Samsung is using some very cheap nand memory on this board that cannot fully load a standard PCI-E 4x4 interface. The write speeds compared to the read speeds are also heavily skewed on this board. Most NVME drives try to come close for read/write, but this one sees a full 20%+ decrease in performance in writes vs reads. This might not be bad if you primarily want to use this for reading from a drive, but I would be disappointed in the throughput if I was any sort of content creator trying to write a project to the drive. Next is the 990 branding. People tend to see the 990 branding and think it will be better than the 980s. However, in testing, I found that my 980 PRO runs laps around this thing and at a price point only a few dollars more. I get that this is an EVO vs a PRO, but your average consumer may not know what those mean and will only look at the numeric value. All in all, this drive feels like they took any leftover chips that didn't pass QC for other product lines, down clocked them on the board, and are trying to sell them to consumers who don't know better. Save yourself the headache and pay the few extra bucks for a PRO series. Or, go look at the multitude of other entry level NVME drives who will offer performance similar or greater to this drive for less money.

Popped this into a free slot on my Dell 7010 and voila! I now have an additional 2TB. The value can't be beat, as I paid under $150 for 2TB. Works great, Used the disk management tool to format the SSD and assigned the drive letter. This drive is yet another backup for my NAS, and it took about 12 hours to copy around 1.7TB of data from my spinners on another machine, and the copy speed was constrained by my LAN (1Gbps). Time will tell, so far the only SSD I have had fail on me in the past 10-15 years is from a different brand.
