Disappointing - poor job tracking steps

I prefer the Samsung/Google platform to Apple, so I was excited to hear about the Galaxy Watch Active when I decided it was time to upgrade my trusty Fitbit Alta, which I had worn for 3 years. I preordered and picked mine up the day that BestBuy shipped them to the stores, so I've been using it daily for about 3 months, and I'm disappointed. First the good - it's small, light, round, and comfortable. I rarely notice that it's there. I also like that there are many watch faces available for a reasonable price. Unfortunately however, it does a poor job of tracking steps, which is the primary reason I bought it. The Galaxy Watch Active only records steps taken with swinging arms. This means that steps taken while pushing a grocery cart or carrying something in my arms are not recorded. After 3 years of wearing a Fitbit, I know my habits, and how many steps I take in an average day, and the Galaxy Watch Active records approximately ⅓ fewer steps daily. Disappointing. And, forget about tracking flights of stairs. I'm lucky if my watch records 1 flight daily, and I regularly do at least 10. Also, I expected the Galaxy Watch Active to be capable of engaging in phone calls, like my husband's Apple Watch. Not so. While I like that I can reject calls from my wrist, when I answer there, I am directed to my phone. There is no audio on my wrist, so what's the point of being able to answer there? Pointless feature. In addition, I was deceived about the blood pressure monitoring capabilities of the Galaxy Active in the pre-sale marketing hype. I'm still waiting on that in a stable and reliable format. And also, I do really wish that the Galaxy Watch Active had the EKG function, like the Apple Watch. My health insurance is no longer covering that in routine physical exams, so it's pretty nice to be able to run it in the doctor's office on the Apple Watch. I also wish that I received high stress warnings, like on the Apple Watch, encouraging me to breathe mindfully. Incredibly annoying is the bright green light that constantly flashes against my wrist while wearing the watch comfortably loose. It shines in my and my husband's eyes at night, in movie theaters, at shows… it's quite distracting. The Apple Watch doesn't do this. Not as important, but noteworthy, are the dreadful (Bixby) voice to text and texting capabilities of the Galaxy Watch Active. While acceptable on my Galaxy phone, they're barely tolerable here. I expected a similar experience device to device. And I should mention that while it was quick and easy to replace the watch band of my Fitbit Alta, this is quite cumbersome. The band cannot be replaced quickly or easily. Even with my small fingers, working with tiny pins is tedious. I have to use needle nose pliers and tweezers. Poor design. Finally - battery life. I have never been able to get 48 hours from a single charge. I must charge every day. But on the bright side, it usually only takes about an hour to bring it back to 100% from 50-60%, so that's not too bad. I really wanted to love this device, but a step tracker that doesn't accurately track steps is pretty disappointing.

Works well, miss the bezel, HORRIBLE BATTERY LIFE!

I have had the Gear S2 Frontier since it came out and I have really liked that smart watch. It is my alarm clock every morning and has all my music stored on it for my daily workouts at the gym. It has been rock solid since day one and I really have no issues with it. I was hoping that the Galaxy Active would be the next step in the smart watch evolution. Unfortunately it has not worked out for me. On the plus side the Active is nice and light. You barely even know you have it on. Also the band that it comes with is nice and grippy but not too grippy. The watch will stay in place but not feel like it is stuck to your skin. I like to wear my smart watches a little bit loose and not be snug on my wrist. The band of this watch allows me to wear it loose but not have it slide around so much that it is annoying. On the minus side, coming from the Gear Frontier with the rotating bezel I really found the lack of a bezel on the Active to be a real downgrade. Selecting apps and settings was quite a pain because the screen size is so small. It is easy to accidentally scroll right past what you're looking for. The bezel on the Gear is a much easier way to get to what you want. The watch face is pretty small. So small in fact that it makes the watch look feminine. I'm sure the Active looks great on a female wrist but on mine it looks a bit girly. The major deal breaker for me on this watch is that I could not get the heart rate monitor to turn off. I have no idea why someone would want a constant reading of their heart rate. Why is that even a feature? Maybe this is nice when you're doing cardio but I have no need to see my heart rate during the day when I'm at work. The heart rate monitor is the biggest power drain on this watch. Even when I selected "Never" on the heart rate monitor setting I found that whenever the watch was touching my skin the monitor was on. If I took the watch off the flashing green light would turn off. But within a few seconds of putting the watch back on that stupid green light would be flashing again. The first day I tried to use the watch it didn't even make it the whole day before needing to be charged! Not even a single day! It was fully charged in the morning and by the time I was done with my workout at about 7pm it was down to 5% battery. I called Samsung customer service and they told me to send the watch in for repair. So perhaps I just got a lemon but that's pretty sad to have happen on a review sample. So if the heart rate monitor problem I experienced was just a glitch on my sample then I would say this is a nice watch. If the monitor being on 24/7 is how this watch works then that is pretty stupid and Samsung needs to change that. Reviewing my sample unit as-is I cannot recommend this smart watch. Shame.

Let start out this review by saying this watch is fantastic. The price point is perfect, the size is great, and it truly matches up to its "active" name. I purchased this watch because it's smaller than all of the other Galaxy watches and has a fitness focus which I tend to exploit tremendously in the gym. It syncs beautifully with my Note 9 and I have no issues without the rotating bevel. My ONLY issue, which happens to be a major one, is durability. I pre-ordered the watch and picked it up in the evening Friday. I wore it all day Saturday to the gym and to run errands. After the gym I was happy to see there were no scratches or dings, especially since either babied the watch the entire time. As the day went on, the face already has a scratch in the center. It is not a large scratch but it can still be seen and felt. It's important to note that I babied the watch the ENTIRE day. It's unfortunate because if the watch scratches that easily throughout regular day wear I am extremely concerned wearing it in the gym. Still a great watch with awesome features, but the durability is why I give it two stars.

    Attractive But Fails for Fitness

I bought the watch to replace my Fitbit Versa. I have a Samsung phone, so it would be nice to have a more integrated/capable smartwatch. This one can easily find my phone, I can charge it off the back of my phone, easier to review emails/texts. Plus, I like the circular design of the watch and that is smaller and lighter. The green color looks distinctive in person while remaining classy and not overbearing. With Samsung's seeming revamp of its health/fitness, I decided to get it a go. However, the fitness tracking on this watch is awful. Chiefly, the sleep tracking. It does not accurately record when you wake up, so that if you tend to linger in bed and do work on your PC or browse using your phone, then it still considers you ASLEEP. It records it as "Light Sleep". Worse, you cannot edit your sleep stats in the Samsung Health app, so you're just left with inaccurate stats. And this is supposed to be their more fitness-oriented watch? For this alone, it only gets 2 stars; it doesn't matter how well it does anything else. Also, the app hijacks your notification options for things like emails and texts. On my phone, my email notifiations will let me mark as red, flag, or delete. Those options are stripped from the Watch in favor of weird "auto replies" like "ok" or EMOJI. Who is replying with a smiley face emoji to an EMAIL???

I bought this watch primarily as a fitness tracker but also wanted it for it's "smart" features. Let me start by saying that I only had the watch for a day before the screen turned green and then went black. The watch would not turn on after that! So, some of the issue may have been due to the watch being defective to begin with! Pros: - Easy to set up - The drop down menu now has been updated to allow more quick access icons. - Display seems to be brighter and more vibrant. - auto tracks, and has an unlimited amount of workout selections. Cons outside the obvious that the watch didn't last more that a day without crashing. - Watch was too small. If you like any of the other watches Samsung has produced, you won't like this one. - If you are a fan of the bezel, as most are, you won't like this watch. - Screen is way to small. They added a black "bezel" as part of the screen that takes a large portion of the screen. They could have just taken that out, extended the screen to the to the edge of the watch face and given the user more screen area. - battery life is ridiculous. You will be charging the watch everyday even if you dont use all of the features. - again may have been because the watch was defective to begin with, but even though the heart rate monitor was in the always monitor option the heart rate monitor would not stay on. Samsung was on the right track with the idea of this watch gearing towards someone who wants a watch for primarily fitness but also has the "smart" features. They just missed the mark! If they go back to the drawing board and correct the issues most customers are having with this watch and make it bigger, they will have a winner!

I was excited to upgrade my fitness watch to the new Galaxy Active. However, by the end of the 1st day I was highly disappointed. After 5 days I returned it. Pros: -It's very comfortable, you hardly know it's there - Screen was easy to navigate - When doing circuit training through the app the watch buzzes at the end of each interval Cons: - Battery didn't last even 24 hours. After making some adjustments I was able to get it to last about a day and a half. Likely could have gotten more, but I didn't want to give up functionality. - Didn't properly record my sleep. I usually go to bed around 8, it consistently recorded me going to sleep at 11:30 and the option to change it/manually enter sleep in the Samsung Health app wouldn't work. - It would take steps away when syncing with the app. I had 4500 steps on my watch and 3400 in the app. When the watch synced with the app it brought my steps down to 3400. I was wondering my my step count was lower than usual. - Unable to sync the watch with other apps

    Not Good For Fitness Tracking

This watch is ok if you are just looking for a stylish smartwatch at a decent price and you don't care about the fitness tracking. I found that the calorie counting, step tracking and sleep tracking were not accurate. For example, it had me sleeping at 8:50pm and I didn't go to bed until almost 10. The battery life is very poor. Even with battery optimize feature on I was lucky to get two days out of a charge. I also do not like the watch band because it tucks in under the band instead of on top. It makes it much more difficult to take on and off plus it is not very comfortable when you are working out. Also, as far as the smartwatch functions I found that sometimes I received notifications and sometimes I did not. I returned the watch and purchased one that is more geared toward accurate fitness tracking with a far better battery life. Hopefully Samsung will make improvements to this watch in the future,

I got this watch because of the Blood pressure monitor which Samsung decided to cancel, so it defeated the number one purpose I wanted it for. The lay out is nice but that is really about it. It looks very feminine, which wouldn't be too bad if I didn't have a gear2 neo already that didn't do everything that this does except for wireless charging and better waterproofing. The bezel functionality on the gear3 is much better and gives the watch a beefier look eventhough this is cheaper, it felt like a step back from what Samsung was trying to do. I'm going to return this one and get the gear3. I think this is a good watch for women, swimmers or someone looking to keep the bulk down, the strap is more comfortable than my gear2, so I'll order a new one for the gear3 I buy off Amazon.

I bought this watch because of the promised features and it is a very nice watch: good looking, well built, nice size and good price. However, for me, there are two major drawbacks, both of which might soon be addressed. The battery barely makes it through 24 hours if you are very careful with viewing, settings, etc. Initally, I didn't get 20 hours out of it. Because of the time it takes to charge, 24 hours straight of use is a stretch. Secondly, help is not yet available in English, and the manual on the website is for a different model (there is no bezel on this watch). Until the battery life is addressed, I cannot recommend this watch.

Too Small and where's the BP Lab

The small screen makes it very difficult to read while running. Navigating with the touchscreen is also very difficult while running. When using all the features the battery barely lasts a day. I found myself charging it morning and night. The sleep tracking was decent, would even recognize when I took an afternoon nap. Was also good at recognizing when I would start running or cycling but that's about it. I ended up returning after one week. Wasn't bad as an everyday watch but was useless as a running watch. Also, was never able to use the Blood Pressure feature. Was told by My BP Lab that you also need a compatible phone which the S8 is not.

While the Galaxy Watch Active is by far the most comfortable and best looking smart watch I've owned, the fitness tracking leaves much to be desired. The heart rate sensor is acceptable at best. Sleep tracking is even worse. My biggest complaint with the Galaxy Watch Active is Samsung promoting the Blood Pressure Monitoring feature. Currently it only works with six phone models! Not to mention that the app is still in beta, requires you to answer daily survey questions, and own a blood pressure cuff. Overall, if you're looking for a health tracker, look elsewhere.

I would have loved this watch if only it worked with my phone. I have a blackberry keyone operating on android. It paired fine, all the options worked EXCEPT notifications. I lied, it did for about 5 minutes. I checked all the fixes on Samsung, and the final word on solving the issue was to return it! After 24 hours of struggle, I did. I exchanged it for a Garmin Vivoactive 3 and it works like a charm. The graphics aren't as fancy, but it does everything and more. I'm sorry, Samsung. I really tried.

Hello there nmjen, this watch is only compatible with select Bluetooth-capable smartphones. Galaxy Watch-supported features may vary by carrier and compatible device. For a list of compatible smartphones and features, please visit https://www.samsung.com/galaxywatch/device-compatibility. For best results, this watch should be connected with compatible Samsung Galaxy smartphones. We hate to see you return the product but we appreciate you giving our brand a chance. Bought this watch to be an upgrade from my microsoft band. Unfortunately the battery only lasts half a day. Turned off wifi, nfc, and lowerd thr back light and it still went through the battery pretty fast. I am going on a trip and cannot charge the watch in the middle of the day. It also takes a long time to charge with the provided charger. My Garmin vivoactive 3 charges in 30 minutes to the full capacity and that takes the samsung watch nearly 2 hours. Overall it is not a very practical gadget.

I have an older model Samsung GearFit Pro that I wanted to upgrade. This is NOT an upgrade. I put it on sleep mode for night, and between 10:30pm and 6:00am it uses 25% of the battery. By 5pm it is down to under 20% left. This watch needs to be charged twice a day to even be able to use it. I have very few apps on it, and only email, phone calls & texts set up for auto notification. The sleep tracker also does not work - I'm returning this and will stick to my older style watch.

So bought this 2 days ago. I absolutely love the layout and all the functions. However somehow within the 2 day period there is already scratches on it. It's supposed to be durable and I am no way rough on it yet! I have only walked around with it no gym yet. I'm definitely going to return it as I need something that can hold up in with obstacle racing and this screen will not hold up. Super sad since I love everything else.

The watch is way too small. Without the rotating bezel like the Galaxy Watch and S3, it is frustrating to navigate. Blood pressure measurement isn't up and running yet, which I already knew, but it feels like an overall downgrade from my Gear S3 Frontier. Upside is that it is nice looking and the screen is great. It is a great price for the build quality. If you have tiny wrists and fingers this is just what you need. But for anyone else, it is ridiculous.

Price is great, but that's about it. If they made this thing bigger with a stronger processor, then heck yeah! Noticable lag on software compared to the Galaxy Watch line. Too small, not for guys, this thing is a ladies watch. I ended up returning this and got the Galaxy Watch 46mm instead.

This is a decent watch and is fairly intuitive to use. I got it because it indicated that it could measure blood pressure. This however is not true. You need a compatible samsung phone and I'm hearing reports that it isn't working on this watch even with the compatible phones. This is very deceitful and a low blow by Samsung.

My wife lost her gear s3 and thought to pick this up as a temp replacement. The screen is amazing... That's it. You can't answer calls without a headset, you can't answer text. The screen is too small and the steps are off between this, the phone and a Fitbit on the same arm. I'd pay a few extra for a watch that can actually do what their intended to do.

Bought this for my wife, she was excited to be able to answer calls while in the pool or other times when her phone was close but not accessible. Bestbuy staff said it would be great for that. This watch WILL NOT ANSWER CALLS, just sends them to your phone. I don't know why they would take features away from a newer device - but they did.
