Thought it would be good, but it wasn't...

I read through a lot of reviews before deciding to purchase this 360 camera, so I was aware of the cons mentioned by many: * Potential over-heating * Poor stitching * Poor color calibration * Poor video stabilization While I did not encounter the over-heating issue, I did notice the other 3 issues, but stitching and color weren't as bad as I expected from reading the reviews. I purchased a 128GB Samsung EVO SD card for maximum recording time (just under 13 hours). With initial "testing" I took photos and did several short videos (5 minutes or less). The photo quality was poor, as noted by many of the reviews, but I didn't get it for that. The videos turned out okay, but stability was an issue, and there isn't a way to fixate on an object in the video with the 360 viewer. Using the phone to look around the video while it was playing (rather than swiping around with a finger) would easily get the video out of alignment. I did not experience an over-heating issue, but I was using the camera indoors where the temperature was around 72 degrees. I thought it would be a good idea to set the 360 camera on a tripod in the middle of the room on Christmas Eve to capture all of the activity during a large family gathering. Starting with a fully charged battery, the camera was able to capture a little over 2 hours of video before shutting off. Unfortunately, this wasn't long enough to capture all of the evening, missing an impromptu concert by the nieces and nephews, as well as the gift exchange. I would have expected a notification on the phone that the Gear 360 battery was low, but I did not receive one. After charging the device again, I connected to it to look at the video it captured (this is when I figured out how long it actually lasted). Too my surprise, there were several video clips... It turns out that the camera breaks up the video in to clips at just under 12 minutes each. There was nothing in any of the reviews or the documentation that mentioned this. Luckily, the camera allows you to select and save multiple clips to the phone. WARNING - the process is slow! I started the save, to come back and find out that the camera was off and no clips were saved. I powered the camera back on, tried again, and the same thing happened. The auto-shutoff feature isn't suspended while saving videos, and a single 12-minute clip takes much longer than the 5 minute default auto-shutoff. I set the camera's auto-shutoff to "never" and tried again. It took what seemed to be more than 30 minutes to transfer a single clip, and I had 13 of them. I finally gave up after 2 more clips transferred, formatted the card, reset the device to factory defaults and returned it to the store. I rated 2-stars, because of my specific experience. However, if you are taking short action clips (10 minutes or less), you may have a much better experience. In summary, adding to the list of cons above: * Long videos are split in to clips at just under 12 minutes * No notification on the phone when the gear battery is low * Saving clips takes a long time, and auto-shutoff needs to be disabled first - it isn't automatically suspended. Hopefully this information helps others out there!

Now sure why others are having so many issues. I followed some guidelines and it works great. I took it to Smith Rock up Misery trail at the top and took some videos that are amazing. Came home and bluetoothed the videos to my Galaxy s8 and then put it into the VR. Wow, it's like I was there again. I would give it a 5 but the videos aren't super great quality. But for the most part they are pretty good. We plany on taking this on many adventures so we can go back home and look at them in virtual reality. We really like it.

    Excellent 360 for the price

Love 360 video and this new version supports full 4k while connected to power. It does require a high speed MicroSD, >=90mbs write U3, such as Samsung 128gb EVO Select. I was able to record in 4k for 8 hours+ without overheating. The picture quality is clearer than the 2016 version, even though it is lower resolution.

The 360 camera market is still growing and for the price, this little device isn't bad. Do your research before buying this so you know its limitations. The picture/video quality will most likely not be as sharp as you expect it to be. Check out some sample pictures and Youtube videos for examples of the quality the Gear 360 produces. Great 360 camera to start with and hone your 360 skills before upgrading to a more powerful device later on.

Photo Quality Very Poor Like 90's Webcam

The actual output photo quality was grainy and like a webcam from the 1990's. Something wrong with the lens and settings. I tried all sorts of photography shots, settings, HDR, firmware upgrades, and over 100 different shots, all of them looking very horrible. I returned the item. Thank you Best Buy for not charging me a restocking fee for this. The user interface and software worked well. I would give 100% satisfaction of the user design, software, accompanying software. No problems with the usability element. I hope Samsung can fix the hardware/lens issues. They have a great software/product idea but it just needs to be fixed.

Picture quality and design are great as with other Samsung products. After 3 months, it stopped charging and will not turn on. It is completely useless. Same issue reported by users for roughly 30% of the units as can be seen in Amazon, Samsung user forums, and Samsung's own product user review page.

Received this as a gift with purchase of my Samsung Duo charger. I was really excited to get it but after the first 10 minutes, I was not impressed. The concept of panoramic photos and editing photos was cool but the app is not very user friendly and you can take better photos with just your phone. I plan to leave the camera at home :/

Poor Resolution / Poor Low Light

    Posted .

For being a 4K video camera, this unit is a total let down. Even at 1080P HD is blurry. I can get better live broadcast videos from my old Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. Had it outside for not more than 10 minutes and it shuts down due to heat. One of the reasons that Samsung came out with this model is that they are not offering "Live Broadcast" feature on their new Samsung Galaxy S8 and pretty much forcing you into buying this unit.
