I've been using my Gear S for about 2 weeks now. Good investment. The 2 year contract and price drop made it worth it. I have the Note 4 with ATT using the data plan connection also. It doesn't have any useful apps for me that I use which was a disappointment. However, there is an app called Opera Mini you can download that will give you a browser and even access to FB mobile and other sites. You tube gives you an error message. I haven't used the GPS yet. I have used the fitness app which alerts you if you are stable/heart rate/walking. I don't know the accuracy of the walking as others have attested to but for me it is a good measurement. If you want the watch to act on it's own you have to keep the mobile Networks constantly on. Too early to tell how much data it is using by changing this setting. We still have a lot of GB left and the battery is not depleting either. Not sure what this does leaving it on constantly. However, by turning it to always on/off my callers would go straight to voicemail if they called the watch telephone number directly. If they call my cell phone (while it is paired) the watch would ring. If they are not paired the watch would act on it's own and not go to voicemail. The Bluetooth in my car does pick up the watch immediately and when I release the call also from the watch my music comes right back on. I can control my telephones music from the watch. I can also download songs from my phone to the watch. Speaker volume is good and if the room is fairly quiet I don't have to have it by my mouth. I wish it came with more instructions as I learned a lot from You Tube. It is was a challenge for me in the beginning to get the battery on. I would recommend have the store associate do this with you a few times before leaving. The glass seems durable as it is Gorilla Glass but I am going to get a protective cover for peace of mind. I have small wrists and it fits perfectly fine. Has some weight to it but it is expected. No camera but that doesn't bother me as I have too many as it is. Still nervous about leaving my phone at home out of habit. It's really too small for me to type on. Nice to just read in case it is an important message to react to and check the voicemail but I cannot accurately type on it. I can now leave my phone tucked in my purse without having to check for it every 5 seconds. If I am not connected the watch alerts me. I have noticed a reduction in my cell phone battery life however. By evening time it is at 30% and I was usually sitting at 70% still with my activity at supper time. When I first became interested in a watch I really thought it would be the same concept as the Ipad is to the IPhone. Smaller screen but does the same thing. Not having a lot of apps is a big con for me and why I give it 4 starts. Please develop more apps and a keyboard that would be user friendly.

First of all let me start by saying to those Gadget Geeks like myself that this watch looks great, feels great and it's fun to own.... BUT ; as every new product it has some bugs at the current initial version at the market. Hopefully soon they will fix that via updates. Bluetooth works flawlessly. Making and receiving call functions are unexpectedly crystal clear at both end. It's lithe speaker miraculously is loud enough to be heard at most environments we all find ourselves during our daily activities like in a car, in a bus, on a boat, at a coffee shop, at grocery store, at the airport and so on... It is a great option to those of us living in a state where having a phone on hand while driving is not permitted. When call comes in, you don't have to dig in to your pockets to get your phone out. A simple swipe on your wrist and VOILA! Also lately most of the phones I realized getting bigger and bigger. Some of them are nearly as same size as a mini tablet. Well in my opinion it looks ridiculous when I see someone holding a mini tablet to their ear and talking. It pairs great with any bluetooth earpiece if you're looking a private conversation. Of course since it has its own SIM Card, in case if you drop your phone or lost or forgot you can always setup as an independent standalone phone by few clicks and again VOILA, you are back to the civilization. For example you left your phone on the counter at Starbucks and you realized after driving few miles. Get on your watch phone immediately let the baristas be aware of the situation. Pedometer and Heart Rate monitors are not 100% accurate at the moment But many other functions work great, including, text messages, emails, scheduling events, calendar, weather, navigation, photo gallery, Alarm, Find my device function, S Voice command and as a BIG plus :BREAKING NEWS on your wrist is as cool as it gets!

GOOD: Free up a pocket... now I can leave the smartphone at home and use this device for answering phone calls anywhere (some comment that there is no privacy - 1st-other people listen if they want when you are talking with someone in person so it doesn't bother me; 2nd-you can use the bluetooth (which I have) if the privacy is so important, overblown complaint in most cases in my opinion). I think you can use the phone number assigned to the watch to do everything, but I am not sure about this. All my notification, emails, texts are forwarded the watch from my smartphone which is in the car or at home when I am traveling abouts. 2" screen with great resolution is a plus rather than the round ones or smaller ones. You can do the typing but I mainly use it for the phone and consuming information and for that it is GREAT. It took me about a month to get used to it, but it is an essential go-to tool for me now. When I am traveling, I have my Samsung 10" tablet from T-Mobile to do the typing, etc. This device has other good features like find my car, voice recorder, weather, music, schedule from my google calendar, calculator, alarm, map voice direction, etc. Health I don't use, but it could be good for the fitness or diet people. NEED WORK: Some more practical real-world apps that can be used in the 2" screen. Hangouts, Kakao, WhatsApp could be very useful (we use Hangouts in the business for the individual and group meeting - people in US and Overseas). Partner with other high-end watch or watch band makers to allow more choices. Battery connection for charging - it is cumbersome and difficult to snap on and off (I finally got the hang of it 3 weeks later, but it is still stupid. Sometimes looses connection between the smartphone and the watch when switching automatically from bluetooth (when devices are nearby) and cell signal (when far away).

Does more than the Apple Watch ever will

Why buy this over an Apple Watch? 1) THIS IS ALSO A PHONE. You don't need to be tethered to your Samsung phone to use it (yes, just like Dick Tracy). You want to run to the store and leave your phone at home? You can..because you have a phone on your wrist. It's a separate line on your phone bill (mine is $10/mo.). The Apple Watch will only make/receive calls while you have your phone in range via Bluetooth, which is just dumb. 2) IT HAS A BIGGER SCREEN THAN APPLE'S WATCH 3) IT HAS A CURVED SCREEN, UNLIKE APPLE'S WATCH. I've found while sending texts, checking news, weather, etc...that the curved screen is extremely natural. It feels almost organic on my wrist. To me, flat screens are for phones and tablets that you physically hold. Since you're wearing this, the curved screen makes far more sense. 4) IT'S NOT APPLE. I love their computers. iPads are okay - but I broke away from the Apple farm, and have switched all my mobile devices to Samsung. Far more intuitive, customizable, and this watch is no different. Since it's not Apple, it COSTS LESS than the Apple Watch will be. You're also not locked into "Apple Pay" (just wait until the watches start getting hacked). While you can use the Google Pay or whatever it's called on your watch, i don't. Personal preference. But it is available. Bottom line: these have been out longer, will do more than Apple's watch, and are a better overall deal. I was unsure when I bought this initially - because I hadn't worn a watch in over 10 years. Now, the only time I take it off is to charge it.

    Great Features, Durability and Quality

It wasn't easy to locate the right watch, but I found one that gave me the functionality and features I needed. This isn't the first smartwatch I bought either, I have an LG G watch, MS band and Moto 360. The Gear S combines the features I wanted from the MS band and Android watches along with the added bonus of being able to interact with my phone in sneding and recieveing calls, texts, emails and more. Call quality is great, no one I have spoken with even knows I am talking to them on my watch. Texting with the touchscreen can be a little awkward at first, but it's easy to get used too. There are also two keyboards types that I have found to be quite useful to use. Battery life is awesome and hands down beats both my android watches and MS band. When paired to my phone and data is always on I can get at least a day and a half of use (50% battery left) before I have to charge it for about a few hours. I have used it as a standalone device and have noticed that the battery drain is a bit more noticeable, but it hasn't been a problem for me to get at least a good portion of the day's use out of it. Also I love the durability of the device... I wear it at my job and people call me crazy for doing that with such an expensive watch, but I tell ya it has stood up to what ever comes it's way. I work unloading a truck and have bumped up against (and rubbed against) steel shelving units with the watch face while putting freight onto pallets. The watch band this watch uses is also really good because it won't get pulled apart like my moto 360 did when the watch gets caught while pulling a pallet in close quarters. Voice commands are also really good, would be nice if i can schedule a task or something but it's not a supported function. Still I can verbally set an alarm for when a task is due and a timer to let me know how long before I have to do something. Even using the voice typing in a text is really good and pretty accurate.. I have sent some longer messages and shorter ones to let someone know I am working or to get a hold of me later. The only thing that kinda hinders the full potential of texting with this watch is that you can only compose a 160 some odd character text with the watch.. Hopefully they raise this limit but until then it's still quite usable. Personally I would recommend this watch to anyone, it's well worth the cost provided you have a supported samsung phone (which I do).

Pros: lots of landscape, tons of useful apps, easy navigation, customizable, s voice works great, has a keyboard or you can use fleksy, performance and functionality much better than the gear and gear 2. Yes, i had them both! Cons: 2 stage wake up. Only 2 stock watch faces display on stage one of wake up. All others show a plain digital time until you tap to fully wake it up. Kinda defeats the purpose of having a neat watchface. Hopefully that will change with software updates. Limited accessories...well, none really! You can buy an extra charging cradle on Sammys site but no watch bands yet. Swarovski was touted to be producing bands for this, but nothing more on that since September fodder. Sammy UK recently released differnt colored bands and black and white bangle style bands. Best i can tell is they are uniform in width rather than slightly tapering. But, they are still very plain jane rubbery bands. Standard bands don't fit because the face pops out. Requires an added phone line to your plan to be a standalone device. So that will cost anywhere from 5-15 a month more. Carriers are forcing an added line and activation fee, but you can cancel it anytime. Very expensive! But, tech is my hobby so i justified it :-) Its BIG. I'm female and while its a big watch, its doable. I just wear lots of bracelets to girl it up a little bit. No one points and laughs at me...that i know of!

Keeps me closer to my wife at work

    Posted
    philbiblio

I work long hours in the operating room. My hands are covered with gloves; it is troublesome to handle my phone. So, my wife had stopped calling or texting me unless emergent. Now, Gear S helps me better in touch with my wife since I can answer back almost immediately. I place a thin and clear dressing tape (like food wrap) daily over the screen for sanitation; I have no problem navigating the screen with my gloves on. Silent vibration on my wrist leads me to quickly glance at my watch for the incoming text or email. it is much less distracting to others. With the voice commands I can answer or make phone calls and send texts. I can ask S voice for searching for various information. However, the conversation is not private unless you use a wireless bluetooth ear/headphone. I didn't activate an additional phone line for Gear S. I use only bluetooth connection to my phone in the bag. If your work place has a pervasive WiFi signal, then you don't need to keep your phone nearby for bluetooth connection. Your phone and the Gear S can maintain connection via the Wifi network. The battery is good for a full busy day, but needs to charge every night. The charger is a clip-on battery that connects to a micro USB cable. You can carry the charger as a backup battery if you need more than a day away from home. It is difficult to type on the micro-keyboard; you are better off using the voice command.

Low quality construction, strap broke in first 2 m

    Posted
    paul667

I have had the watch for just 2 months and the strap fell apart. The strap did not brake due to misuse, the rivets simply fell out and now the strap will not stay connected to the metal connector. I called Samsung support and they said that it would cost $250 to fix the phone if I sent it to them, or I could just buy a new strap on the net. I requested to speak to the manager and the manager said the same thing. I tried to reason with the manager that a $600 watch should not break in the first 2 months, and if it does, Samsung should replace the strap for free. I explained to the manager that a bad review was not worth the $25 (retail) that the strap would cost to replace, but he was having none of it. So here is my bad review. It is one thing to make a bad product, but it is even worse not to correct the problem when it costs so little.

Samsung Gear S - It's all in the wrist!

Having had a few Smartwatches in my day, I was very interested in the Gear S. I was attracted to the ability to use it as a handsfree while driving. I am a Baby Boomer and I love Dick Tracy's wrist radio. For you younger readers, look him up. While the device ( I hesitate to call it a watch ) is fairly large, it looks good on my wrist. I am 6'3" so there was no size issue. The display is clean and clear, the colors are nice and visibility outdoors is not bad with the brightness cranked up. I have replaced the plastic band with a black stainless steel offering that classes up the look a bit. Unfortunately there are still large black plastic areas at the top and bottom edges of the device. Now, depending on your carrier ( I have AT&T ) you may or may not be able to forward your incoming calls to the Gear S. I had an issue with AT&T in some areas, and a newer build of Lollipop, failing to allow setting the option to forward all calls if unanswered. I got NETWORK SIM CARD ERROR. No fault of Samsung. The watch has a nicer interface than the Android Wear based Zen Watch. Yes I have that too. The functionality is better as well with the ability to compose emails and texts, surf the web with the Opera Mini Browser. All in all a useful device. If you are on the go like me and get many messages and emails during the day, the Smartwatch, almost any Smartwatch allows you to see the alert and decide if its worthy of digging out your phone. The Gear S goes above and beyond the competition.

Honestly, I wasn't even in the market to purchase THIS smartwatch. I was going to wait and switch phones to an Apple Phone AND Purchase THE Apple watch too. But, for my birthday a friend went to BEST Buy and this watch was advised and sold as a Smartwatch that DIDN'T need a phone and that couldn't be further from the truth. In theory it's cool. I researched reviews and stats on this Smartwatch and the reviews were positive. Hmph.lol After getting the watch home and trying it, the cool factor was out the window when it had to be charged. My Bluetooth ear buds didn't sync automatically and you had to get your phone out and pair it again...every time. And forget transferring your pictures from the phone because it won't happen. There's no camera, but I was ok with that. The texting capability was fine but it was an arduous task because the keyboard was too small. And even that wasn't bad. I love that I can make and receive calls directly on the phone but I couldn't get past it needing to be synced every time I charged it and even freezing often which rendered it useless. I returned/exchanged it 3 times...both watches. Ultimate, I had to return it. It is great as a wach and very fashionable.

I bought this watch after a week since its first release onto the market. I am using it everyday as my cell phone. I have since not seen any connection issues that have been different from my cell phone in Florida. Since under heavy usage the battery does not stay charged Samsung included a extra battery that can be used as you go. The Gear S has gotten a lot of compliments since I first wore it. It looks elegant in style around my wrist where it sits comfortably. The watch is designed to tailor to anyone's size wrist. The feel of the glass on the watch, takes the Gear S away over any other competitors. The rich colors that the watch has are better than any phone I have seen. You will need to try this watch for yourself to feel how luxurious and stylish it truly is and feels. My only complaint is that the watch does not come with a camera yet, to include, during bright Florida days it makes screen reading very difficult. SKYPE through Samsung watch in the future very possible.

My hubby got this for me as a gift and I couldn't be happier! The curve screen is gorgeous and the display is crisp, clear, and vibrant! I am all about customizing and to be able to create my own watch face is an added bonus! I can email and text back using this watch. The qwerty keyboard is pretty accurate as well. I had the Gear 2, loved it, but love this one about a million times more. You can also transfer pics and music from your phone to your watch. It took me awhile to get used to it from the Gear 2 because there are so many features compared to the Gear 2 but now I can't be without my Gear S. The speaker phone is also crisp and clean. My family members didn't realize that I was chatting with them through my smart watch. Super convenient since I am always running around and can't always get to my phone on time. If I had to complain, I would just complain that the watch strap is expensive and doesn't come in a lot of colors. Other than that, LOVE my Gear S!!

I got the watch and immediately worked right out the box, it did not take long to active it and fast it was working. I enjoy it while driving since I do not have to look for my phone I can take the calls from my watch, so no ticket for talking on the phone. I also run with it so it tracks my miles with running app. I also monitor my heart while running or working out. I have many apps on it but I really like listening to my bluetooth headphones while running, and I do not need my phone with me, all I need is my watch while listening to my music or one of my apps streaming music. I also like that it has the gps so I never get lost, while running long distances or on my bike. its just awesome.

I love this watch. This smart watch allows you to view/reply to email, text messages, and answer calls via your watch. Email, Text, and calls are forwarded to the watch via blue tooth if your phone is within range. If your phone is not in range, the watch has its own sim card therefore its own number and you can still receive text, calls, and emails even if your phone is not in range. (a feature that Apple does not have). The watch also serves as a pedometer, music player (which can have it's own music downloaded to the watch or you can blue tooth it from the phone). Your appointments will also appear on the watch along with any alarms.

I have been looking for deals on the Gear S for some months, and BestBuy's current price made buying the watch a requirement. I haven't subscribed to At&T service, and still find the watch to be fully functional when paired with my Note 5. Making and holding a call from the watch is a breeze. Overall learning to navigate the UI so as to access all the features is quite easy. Transferring music to the watch his via Bluetooth was unbelievably fast, and it's awesome that Samsung allows you to pick specific tracks, albums or artists. The watch serves as a stand alone mini music player, which can be used with Bluetooth headphones also. The watches keyboard is small to use for replying to messages or emails, but the swype function makes the task easier. My only issue has come from finding an alternate watch band from any retail store.

The watch was a breeze to synch up to my Note II. All of the mail and contacts synched up and connecting to the AT&T network was no issue at all. It's wonderful leaving my Note II at home and forwarding all calls to the Smart Watch. With my bluetooth headset, I almost feel invisible versus hold a big phone to my head. The speaker is the right angle so when your hands are on the steering wheel, the speaker is tilted for optimum hearing. Folks on the other end say my voice is better than when I am on the Note II. My only issue is the 1.75 days of battery life. But given its size, I guess I can live with that since it charges rapidly in about 2 hours.

My primary purpose for this purchase was to utilize the S Health pedometer (Steps) however it seems like my cell phone logs more than the watch and I am not quite sure which is correct. The whole point was to buy the watch so I would't have to carry my phone at all times especially when walking around the house. I wish there was a ear phone jack available, and long as Samsung has been making these watches you would think it would have one by now. Also unlike the S Gear II there is no camera, not a big deal breaker but they did go backwards. Trying to text on the little thing is very hard and I have tiny fingers. Unlike the phone there is no speech to text option. So for the money I do not think it is worth it, and have contemplated returning it, but I'm not really one to return stuff so I'm stuck!

Have not had a,single problem with this item (it's been a little over a month since purchase). It's fun to use. Excellent at monitoring step, running, sleep, and heart rate. All of which sync directly to S-health which is a fantastic app for tracking your personal health / wellness / and fitness. The reminders are nice. It tells you when you've been inactive for too long. Also tells you when you're close to achieving a fitness goal. Not very good support from the Gear S app store. Like 80% of the apps are just different styles of watch faces. But there are just barely enough useful apps to make this a worthwhile companion to my wrist. Hey Gear S app developers..... get to work and give us something to use - other than "cutesy" watch faces.

I LOVE this Smart Watch! When I first saw the Samsung Gear S I knew that I had to have it! I searched all over and couldn't find it brand new anywhere; except BestBuy.com. The representatives at Best Buy helped me to order it and it was truly a seamless process! I'm glad that I went to Best Buy; because I now have the Smart Watch of my dreams. It not only tells time; but I get my messages, S Health, my favorite apps, the weather, etc. What I love most about it is the Qwerty Keyboard is actually big enough for me to type text messages accurately on. My phone rings while I'm driving, no worries. I answer it with my Gear S and speak on speaker phone using my blue tooth. I might put it on a plan later on; but for right now, it's doing everything that I need it to do.

This watch is a fantastic combination with my note 5. I rarely have to take my phone out of my pocket for anything and I mean anything. You can control everything from this device; music, text, emails, internet, etc. Even if for any reason you forget your phone at home the watch still functions as a fully functional phone, making calls sending text and so much more. It has great Bluetooth capabilities for headsets and even without one it has a very loud speaker and mic system. Overall this is the best smartwatch I've ever owned and I purchase one for every phone combination I buy. Hope this review helps a few people make a great satisfying purchase.
