Fantastic Introduction to what's to come

    Posted
    InLosAngeles

I think this is a fantastic introduction to a technology that is going to change the way we view media for many many folks in the years to come. The potential is limitless. First, I have a Note 5. Some people have overheating issues with the S6. As I am someone who reads forums, nobody is having this issue with the Note 5. I have used the device for up to 4 hours and not one issue of overheating. VR does drain the phone battery quite a bit so its a good idea to fully charge your phone before using this if you are going to be using it for a few hours. It does have a MicroUSB cord to connect to on the device itself, but that can limit your turning of your head...so for Netflix or more stationary type views that's fine. There are a large number of apps available in the Oculus Store showing off gaming, 360 videos, 3D in 360, music, educational, science, social, etc. Most applications are either free and all the way up to about $20. Most are less than $10 or free. The one negative is that the Oculus Store is currently an app on your phone or via watching on the Gear VR and the ratings don't allow for any commentary. Also, the store is sort of chaotically organized, so hopefully they will improve that over time. You are also unable to view the store on a PC (yet). I highly recommend viewing the store via the app and not using the Gear VR as there are many apps in the app that you won't see via the GearVR view. It's also organized a slightly better. Also, be aware that you don't get notified of updates that you need. You'll only see them if you occasionally browse you library within the store app. I recommend you download updates when you are NOT using your GearVR. Keep in mind that this is the first of a new technology. Resolution is low. Its kind of like looking through a screen door. HOWEVER, I will say that you quickly forget about that as you are so immersed in what you are viewing. Some of the apps and videos are fantastic immersive experiences. Some that come to mind and I highly recommend are Ocean Rift, MilkVR (has several fantastic videos), Marvel Avengers, Titans of Space, Dreadhalls, Gunjack, Esper 2, Herobound Spirit Champion, Anshar Wars 2, Lands End, Jurassic World, Cirque Du Soleil Kurios, Netflix, VRSE, Flickr VR. Set up was easy. I don't find the headset particularly as comfortable as others say, but it's not very uncomfortable. I put most of the weight on the top strap and that helps a lot. The phone makes it heavier. I suspect that upcoming devices that don't leverage a phone, but rather a PC or PS4 will be more comfortable (e.g. Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, PlaystationVR). Regardless, this is the first true consumer mobile experience without be tethered to something...other than the Google Cardboard and those equivalents and this is 10X better than that. I got the Moga Power Pro controller to play with certain games that require a controller. It works quite well via Bluetooth. Keep in mind that this controller has two connection options, an A and B. Make sure you use option B. It will disconnect if you put the controller aside for a bit and aren't using it. If that happens, just turn the controller off, and then back to B and it should connect fine. Always does for me. Everyone, except for my brother who refused to try it, has LOVED what they experienced. Everyone has commented on the potential. Just keep in mind when setting your expectations that this is similar to when cell phones first came out. Its a new technology. It will only get better with subsequent iterations. It will only get lighter. It will only get better resolution as prices for technology come down and newer technology comes out. However, you can't go wrong if you have one of the 4 phones that support this. Again, I recommend a Note 5 since it has a slightly better field of view than the S6 (at the expense of a negligible lower resolution (PPI)...though to me the FOV is more important for immersion), the Note 5 doesn't overhead, has more memory, and a larger battery.

I had read numerous reviews from here, as well as other websites on this product. After a little hesitation, I purchased this product. Out of the box, other than the VR itself, there were two straps and a user manual. Setup was a breeze, and the downloads depend on your speeds at home for installation of the app and any updates to the VR. As for the VR itself, it's been nothing but a blast for myself, family and friends. Some apps involve more motion than others which may cause some motion sickness, but all in all it's been well worth the money spent. Yes, it's not an Rift but is not tethered like the rift, so now need for a high performance comouter, only a Samsung compatible phone (6+, Note 5) Positives: Price, entertainment value, untethered Negatives: App Price, touch pad, phone heats up during prolonged use. A few notes: Most apps cost money. Some a few bucks, others upwards of $10.00. Yes, there are free apps, and I would recommend playing the developer apps, as they are free and usually some of the most entertaining. Milk VR is Samsung's version of the Ocolus store, a must have. Recommendations: A good pair of headphones, swivel chair and controller. Headphones only enhance the overall experience. Swivel chair allows you to see the entire 360° field of view, seeing EVERYTHING going on. Finally, a good pairable controller is a must. If you spend more than 30 minutes on here playing games, you need a controller. I picked up the MOGA PRO for 49.99 from Amazon and it has increased the enjoyment/entertainment factor exponentially.

I cannot express what a fantastic experience using the Samsung Gear VR is. Expect to spend about 15 minutes setting your Gear VR up; it can be tricky attaching the two straps and adjusting them for a comfy fit, and then you'll do more adjustments to fit your phone into the headset (there are options depending on phone model). Install the software as prompted when you put on the headset for the first time, and you're ready to go. For the optimum viewing experience, I wipe my phone with a damp washcloth and dry it with a microfiber cloth, then, if needed, I wipe the lenses with a dry microfiber cloth (both sides). There's nothing more annoying than having dust or smudges obscure the brilliant picture of the Gear VR. I advise decent headphones (with a cord, NOT Bluetooth) and the Stratus XL game controller. You're transported into a whole new world when you're using the Gear VR. Tons of content is available for free-- everything from rollercoaster rides at Six Flags to Cirque du Soleil shows to addictive games. I recommend downloading content rather than streaming (simple to delete when you're done). If you have subscriptions to Netflix and Hulu, you can use their VR apps to watch shows, movies, trailers, and exclusive content on a virtual big screen. Content that isn't free is usually around 5 bucks at most, which is a bargain for games like GunSight and Dreadhalls (have your controller ready!). But there is enough free content to satisfy most people. The gorgeous (free) game Smash Hit is not to be missed. A note of caution: VR is so immersive that some people may experience motion sickness. My dad has complained of this several times; he says it's the same feeling he gets on spinning rides at theme parks. Aside from the potential for motion sickness, your phone will heat up pretty quickly, so I try to limit my sessions to half an hour. Low price, extremely entertaining, and a great gadget to show off to friends and family.

    Minor Improvements...But Worth It

To start, I also own the original consumer version (ie. NOT "developer" edition) of the Gear VR, so this is primarily a simple comparison of both. In essence, the new Gear VR is better than the original in several ways. First, and most importantly, the lenses are more adjustable than the original, providing a better view. Speaking of view, the angle of view is also better, providing a more immersive experience. The physical controls have also been better placed, and upgrade, making it slightly more easy to take control. In regards to "control", when playing games, I highly recommend using a real controller (best choice: SteelSeries Stratus XL) over the Gear VR's touch "controllers". While it's more an aesthetics thing, I prefer the new blue color, over the original white. Comfort-wise, I haven't really noticed any difference. So, the real question is, "Is it worth it?" If you don't already have the original, and are looking to get a Gear VR, undoubtedly, YES...get it. The improvements are worth it, even taking into consideration Best Buy's lowered $70 price for the old model. Of course, if you have a Galaxy Note 7 (as I do, or any future Samsung handsets (which are virtually-guaranteed to utilize USB-C ports), then you have no choice but to get the new version. On the other hand, if you already have the old model (this is only for those with handsets utilizing the microUSB port), and are considering the new model, whether, or not, it's worth it for you to spend another $100, that's entirely up to you. For me, it was worth it. Besides,. my wife has a Galaxy S6, so I gave her the old Gear VR, and I got the new one to use with my Note 7 (and, before any "exploding phone" jokes are posted, yes, already have the replacement...got the day they were released).

Great device at the right price for VR

At the time of my writing this (early 2017) there is still a lot of confusion regarding VR. Pretty much everyone knows it's going to be everywhere, but at the moment there are a lot of format wars with competing platforms and price points. I have played on one of the best systems out there, the HTC Vive, and it is an awesome experience. But for most of us the $600+ price tag for devices on that level this early in the game is just too much. On the other end of the spectrum are the around 15 or 20 dollar VR headsets that are fun for a moment but don't really work too well. Enter the Samsung VR and it's companions in the around $100 price range. They aren't as great as the expensive units, as your cell phone can't handle running hand set controller (except for an X-box style game pad which you could buy separately) but what you can do with them sans-controller is surprisingly versitile. This device is partnered with Oculus, so in other words you won't have access to the Google Play store for content, but the Oculus store as it turns out is full of great material, much of it even for free. For the un-initiated it's worth noting that Oculus is the manufacturer of one of the high-end expensive VR units on the market, and Samsung and this headset really benefit from their time spent developing this technology. In summation, this is reasonably priced for what you get. Not as capable as the much more expensive class out there, but much better than the cheap ones. At a time when companies are still fighting it out to see who will dominate in a couple of years, the Samsung VR is a great entry point. If you're like me, it won't just sit on the shelf collecting dust.

I was surprised out how amazing this device is within minutes of using it with my Galaxy S7 Edge. Watching videos in VR is an amazing experience. You feel like you are really in a location without actually being there. I was in a shark tank under water and watching sharks swim around me was really cool. That's an experience I would never actually do in real life but doing that gives me an idea how it would feel and it's pretty intense! Looking at photos is a fun experience too. You can visit far away places and turn your head in all angles and feel like you are visiting the place in person. It's unbelievable. My favorite experiences so far though were from my love of sports. I watched the NCAA March Madness Final Four in VR and it was awesome! You had a seat right in the front row of the court and I watched the game live just like I was sitting there in person. Really cool stuff! Also, I watched the Kentucky Derby in VR and that was awesome watching the horses parading right past me before they went into the gates for the race. The whole experience is just incredible. You feel like you are right there with everyone else watching in person. This technology is fantastic and for $100 you cannot beat the value if you already own a compatible Samsung phone. I'm giving one to my nephew for his birthday in a few weeks and I can't wait to see how much he loves it for gaming. A must buy!

If you are looking to test the waters in the world of Virtual Reality, this is the absolute best way to do it! You might ask why is this such a big deal? How is this different from looking at 360 videos online or playing games on my 90 inch TV? The big deal is this: imagine you no longer have the rectangular shape of the TV in front of you. Instead, you are surrounded in the video or the game environment. It is all around you as if you were looking through your own eyes. Moving your head does just that, it moves the environment. instead of looking at a screen and pressing UP on the controller to view a massive dinosaur or tall tree, you stand there the way you would in the real world and you LOOK UP. Yes, there are reviews saying it is not HD video, but when you start getting lost in the experience, the resolution is the LAST thing you will be thinking about. You won't notice it. Trust me, I am a person that exclusively buys Blu-Ray movies for the clarity and I'm telling you the VR experience is what matters and is what blows away any thought of HD video. Oh, and the physical unit itself looks, feels, and is very sturdy. It is also very comfortable and doesn't feel front-heavy on your head if adjusted correctly.

If you are a Galaxy S (6 and up ) owner and don't really have the cash laying around for an O.R. unit. This is the perfect gateway to the world of virtual reality for you. I was sceptical at first, but curiousity got the better of me. 10 seconds after putting it on I realized how much I couldn't live without this machine. It's immersive. Throw on a pair of headphones and say goodbye to the real world for as long as your phone can stay charged. (Even though, there is also a connection so you can charge your phone while you play. There are 2 different adapters (micro USB & USB type C ) so that your phone will fit in perfectly. You know what? Stop reading. You're obviously curious. Go get one! $99. won't kill ya. Enjoy....aaaand your welcome.

Costs less overall compared to an Oculus Rift or HTC vive, yet has almost all the functionality of a working gyroscope-enhanced VR system. Best of all, it's portable for experiencing VR away from home (such as vacations or long road trips). Lenses do frequently fog up during first few minutes of use, and you should make sure your phone screen is relatively free of dust and scratches before each use (it also won't work with phone cases or clear screen protectors). Using the Gear VR will also consume a lot of phone battery, but thankfully the headset has its own microUSB charge port. I recommend you have a long extension cord to plug into an outlet and/or a large external battery charger of 3,000 mAh or more for extended use. Finally, be sure to have plenty of internal storage space for Gear VR apps and videos, as the required Oculus app currently does NOT support SD cards for storage. Used with Samsung Galaxy S7.

I bought this to replace a broken Microsoft Band (I broke the screen and had it replaced using Best Buy Protection). I already have a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, so it was between this and another Band. I made the right choice! You can read all the features, and they pretty much work as expected. Notifications are quick to show up and easy to read or respond to. There are a number of health related features that are great - reminds you to take a walk every hour during the day, reminders for drinking water, etc. The only negative here is that the features work best with Samsung apps - email, messages, etc. If you like third party apps, they will work but won't be as integrated. Battery life is excellent for a smart watch. I wear the watch from 7am to midnight and the remaining battery is around 65%. A couple of nice extras is the ability for it to open your Samsung phone to the notification you are viewing on the watch. So, if you are reading an email on the watch, you can have it automatically open your phone to that email. Great for responding to an email that is too long to type on the watch. Also, notifications stop if you are already looking at your phone or if the watch is on the charger.

If you are interested to see what the future of VR will be, this is the perfect place to start. There are enough free movies, images, and experiences for countless hours of entertainment and an increasing library of games. GearVR is comfortable, easily adjustable, fits over nearly all glasses, and easy to set up. I've taken advantage of the portable nature of the product to share the experience with family, friends, even co-workers, all of which were amazed and no one experienced any motion sickness. The execution isn't flawless -- if you are running other applications in the background (or if your phone is updating/download apps), your phone will get an overheat notice in some cases. Also, this is limited VR; there is no secondary source allowing you to lean forward for example. Regardless, the technology is amazing and you can certainly lose yourself inside one of the many experiences, be it the wonder of Cirque du Soleil, the beauty of the waterfalls of Ireland, or the terrifying house of Dreadhalls. It is impossible to explain exactly how it feels, you simply must experience it for yourself!

The low cost of entry, (given the BIG caveat that you already have the required phone hardware) is a huge selling point here. Set up is pretty straight forward and it is an eye opening experience, for sure. With a simple app download, you can also access all Google Cardboard apps on the Play Store along with everything you have access to in the Oculus/Samsung store. You really have to experience it to understand how amazing this technology is. Given another five years, this will seem archaic, so for $100 you have front row seats to see how the world will dramatically change with VR within the next half decade. The low price of entry and expanding content selection, (Land's End is a fantastic game, by the way) means if you have the money and requisite phone to make this work, you are doing yourself a disservice by not buying it.

It's hard to get your head around this technology. You can access not only games from the VR store, but frequently updated still photos of current events, scenery, etc. The display technology puts you inside the photo. My family thoroughly enjoyed some stills from the summer Olympics. You could see the main athletes in front of you, turn your head, and see every part of the Olympic stadium and spectators as your turned. Everyone who tries this on is freaked out. We have spent a little time with some games we downloaded, one of which has you zooming through a 3-d obstacle course, with your path controlled by where you are looking. It is dizzying and is best played while you have one hand on the edge of a sofa to keep you grounded. I suspect this technology is the cornerstone of all gaming in the future.

The experience of the Gear VR has been better then I expected, and everyone I have let try it.. With Oculus working on the software side for Samsung they have put together a GREAT store to compliment Samsung's hardware.. This only works with 2015 Samsung S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge Plus and Note 5.. While these have GREAT screens their PPI (pixels per inch) is still not enough to overcome the "screen door" effect.. BUT.. As immersive as the experience is, you often get over it.. The limitations of the the current phones (screen and overheating within 1-2 hours) are the biggest issues, but I still give it a 5 because of how GOOD the overall experience is..The stores has 100s of FREE and Pay Games and VR Experiences.. When Samsung moves to 4k phones with 800+ PPI, then this will be an even BETTER experience.. (Hopefully this unit will still support the upcoming S7, but likely not),,

I had first seen this when my brother-in-law brought his Gear VR over for me to try. I wasn't sure if it would be worth it at first, but as soon as I put it on and saw how amazing and clear everything was, I knew I had to have it for myself! Both my phone and my wife's phone fit into this (Samsung Galaxy 6 edge+ and Galaxy 6) and we have not had any problems with either. The ONE and ONLY downfall I have found so far is that the selection for games and experiences is small so far, but Oculus keeps adding new programs all the time, and even since I bought this, there have been numerous new games and features added. The touchpad makes it easy to navigate the menu's and works for most experiences, but to get the full experience, I'd recommend a good bluetooth controller that you can use to control more of the action driven games and apps.

First off, this is one truly impressive piece of technology! More importantly, it's amazingly "not" overpriced at all! I've been deeply involved with technology for many years, and as such, wasn't expecting all that much... but I was so VERY surprised to find myself in the wrong. First off, on the negative side this product doesn't offer 4K resolution, and I'm spoiled by that as I've recently switched "all" my video at home to SONY 4K sets from a variety of brands offering 1080p video (also all high end units). Now for all the positives... Virtually everything else one could expect is there for the asking. It accepts all phones, including my newest Samsung Note 5, supports a wide variety of sound outputs, includes memorable visual components... and much, much more! Even better, it's only $100 to get in on this technology! If your on the bleeding edge, pick this one up, you likely won't regret it!

This is a great product, that being said we must remember that VR is new and it will only get better over time. This is a great product because of the ability to take it anywhere with you, unlike the more expensive models which you are connected with cables to you PC and not only that but you will definitely have to have a top notch graphics capable PC to run them on. Each time I put my VR glasses on it always seems to be more apps or videos content available to check out. The apps are great, check the free games out first before purchasing, but the games only run $3.00-$10.00 which is rather cheap. Netflix on VR is awesome! Please check out "Drop Dead", and AltSpace VR these are super cool.

I love tech but I haven't been overly excited over it of late. VR is one of those things that is hard to describe. No matter how many reviews of it I read, I just couldn't grasp what the reviewers were trying to tell me. I fear I will be no better but I will give it a good shot for those on the fence about it. I see so much potential for this. Right now games have the most attention but as the tech matures it can be used for a lot of things. I took a tour of some really fancy house. I could move through every room, check out the ceiling, the floors, just like I was there and my thought was, this would be so cool for real estate. Imagine shopping for your next house and not having to leave the house unless you found one you really liked. This could be a time saver in real estate. Get more houses shown, save realtors on gas money you name it lol.

So I snapped in my note 5 and bam I was in a new world. Just unbelievable that this headset can do what it does. It even has full on Netflix that gives you a movie theater experience. It has games you can purchase and all kinds of different environments to explore. My kids can't get enough of it and I have have been waiting to get another turn lol. The one drawback i can see is i wish the picture could be a little better. It has a slight blur no matter how well you adjust it. But for 99 dollars it's a must buy and lots of fun! I can't wait to see how far samsung takes it! But for now it's definitely worth a try!

I got this for free by pre-ordering the GS 7 Edge. I honestly thought it was just another pointless gimmick and that I would be selling it off quickly or something. Well I gave it a try, and WOW! I was totally mind-blown! I had never used a VR headset before, and never understood what all the hype was about until I tried this headset! It's hard to explain, but you truly get immersed in a new world when you put these on. You can look all around you and see everything like an immersive world. Connect some decent earphones with these, and you've got an amazing experience! Now I can't wait to see how the more expensive VR headsets from Sony, Oculus and HTC will fare. This is the cheapest of the bunch and still loads of fun! I highly recommend this if you want to try something new and really impress yourself and others! There are plenty of games in the market already for this, and in a few months time, there will be many more!
