The sound is great. Dolby Atmos is a little glitchy at times. The app is really versatile. From night mode to switching rear speakers to front stereo for music is njce to have.

At this price point, there is no better immersive sound system setup available that can deliver better.
I initially went with Sonos Arc ultra (soundbar only), but when compared to this unit here, the performance difference was night and day.

The 990 series of sound bars is pretty awesome and the latest version of it does not disappoint, I'm a fan of the HDMI 2.1 passthrough as it works well with how I have it configured in my environment. Sound has been amazing, very happy with the night time features it offers as well. Overall a great product.

Its a piece of art in the sound systems, especially using with a Samsung TVs for Q-symphony sound, absolutely a fantastic combination. I bought a 98 inch TV Q80C and its really creates a fantastic surrond sound for the price. Recommend this pruchase.

Love this sound system, paired easily to my Samsung tv. Great Atmos sound fills large living room. Absolutely recommend to anyone looking for a new system or to upgrade their existing system.

Not as good as my 5.2 Klisph surround setup... but still pretty awesome. While playing games you can tell what side the horse or cars comes from behind.

Immersive, extraordinary, captivating, sleek design and worth every penny. I’m glad I bought this for my birthday. The compliments I received by guests watching movies and sport events is amazing.

It’s so easy to set up and the rear speakers are wireless but if you don’t have receptacles close you’ll need a small extension cord. I have a Bose surround also and the bass is not nearly as deep as the Bose. That is really my only complaint is I wish the bass tube hit a lot harder for the money.
Thank you for sharing your positive experience with the HW-Q990D Soundbar!
Its impressive configuration of 11 front-facing speakers, 1 subwoofer, and 4 up-firing channels ensures a captivating audio experience that envelops you from all directions. Whether it’s music, movies, or gaming, this soundbar delivers bold, multi-channel sound that truly immerses you. And the inclusion of a rear speaker kit means your home theater setup is complete right out of the box. No need to hunt for additional components—it’s all there!
Now, let’s talk about the intriguing Private Rear Sound feature. This clever addition allows you to enjoy your favorite shows and movies discreetly, especially during late-night viewing. By deactivating the front-firing speakers and utilizing only the rear speakers, you can immerse yourself in the content without disturbing others nearby. It’s a thoughtful feature that enhances your overall entertainment experience.

BEWARE. OPEN BOX EXCELLENT WAS NOT WHAT I GOT.

I was excited to receive the sound bar yesterday on Aug 28, but I was very bummed out to find out that the "excellent" condition open box sound bar was severely damaged. The metal soundbar was cracked open. The bass had scratched up and cracked, and parts inside came loose and would rattle when I picked up the unit. It didn’t come with the remote control either, which did not meet the item description.
When I reached out through online chat on the following morning, I was told that BB would not be able to exchange for the same item (open item excellent condition) even though they have that in stock online. Upon digging in, I was told that the price of the same item had gone up by 300 dollars. I was told to visit the store to see if they could do anything because I knew that there was an open box with the exact same model in the "GOOD" condition vs. the "EXCELLENT" I purchased. To no surprise, the store manager told me that he was not able to exchange because the price had gone up. I’m a Total Best Buy member, and never had any claims for warranty, and even the Geek Squad representative couldn't do any thing because sound bars do not fall under their accidental damage protection (which makes me wonder why I keep paying for the membership to begin with).
I desire to be able to exchange for another open box excellent condition item, which is available online as of 8/29/2025, which was what I paid for. I could also settle for an open box in good condition, which is also available at the Plant store on 8/29/2025.
BBB complaint #23816015 filed 8/29/2025 and I will stop buying from Best Buy if they are unable to resolve this simple issue for me.
Please reach out to me through email (if anyone actually read this).

Unacceptable Packaging and Delivery Experience

Product arrived very poor condition via Fedex. The package was almost open, with holes through which the product was clearly visible. For an item at this price point, this level of packaging and handling is unacceptable.
Now I need to purchase a protection plan because I’m not confident about the long-term reliability of a product that arrived like this.
Best Buy really needs to improve their shipping and packaging practices—this is not a small or inexpensive purchase for many customers.

Premium Home Theater Experience

The Samsung HW-Q990D 11.1.4 Q-Series soundbar with wireless subwoofer and rear speakers featuring Dolby Atmos is a great product for a home theater setup.
Pros:
• Packaging – The packaging was well thought out with the speakers and subwoofer separately secured in Styrofoam on the bottom and the soundbar placed on top. Even though the box took some damage during shipping nothing arrived broken. The way it was packed made unpacking quick and easy with not a lot of waste (all things considered).
• Setup – Of all the soundbar, subwoofer, speaker packages I have purchased in the past, the Samsung 11.1.4 Q-Series was the easiest to setup out of the box. While prior soundbars have given me issues with wireless connection to the subwoofer and/or speakers, the HW-Q990D worked without issue. There wasn’t anything extra required to pair them after plugging them in. I connected the system to my Epson ultra short throw projector in our theater room via ARC without any issue as well.
• Sound – The sound is fantastic for the price point and does not disappoint! With 11 front-facing speakers, 1 subwoofer with rich bass, and 4 up-firing channels I get the movie theater experience at home. One thing I noticed immediately was that I could hear the voices from TV shows and movies clearly, especially at low volume. The prior soundbar I had in the room made understanding dialogue difficult, notably during action packed/loud scenes and I would find myself having to put subtitles on. Samsung overcomes this through active voice analyzer and adaptive sound to optimize onscreen voices and it works amazingly. Sound Pro also analyzes the room, calibrates the system, and automatically adjusts the audio.
• Wall Mounting Kit – It is nice that the kit to mount the soundbar is included; however, no wall anchors are included. If Samsung is going to include the brackets, include appropriate standard wall anchors for the weight. I ended up having to make a trip to a local big box hardware store to get a set of anchors that would hold the weight of the soundbar.
Cons:
• Remote – The remote is not backlit and hard to see in the dark.
Overall, I love this soundbar and it gets a 100% recommendation from me.

I've always had soundbars - and surround sound. But nothing that integrated completely/easily between components. Having a new Samsung tv, this was the answer. I can't believe how easily this package set itself up. With setup instructions coming from the tv screen, it was truly plug & play. The hardest part was having to do a wall mount bracket for one of the rears. (Brackets are provided for the soundbar itself, but not the rear speakers.) Once I had it set up, I had to walk to the rear speakers to see the LED lit up blue showing connection as I didn't want to believe my ears! Thank you Samsung, I've had fits connecting soundbars before, but not this time.
The first feature I encountered was Q-Symphony. When you have a compatible Samsung TV, the tv speakers work in conjunction with the soundbar. I felt this was superfluous and turned it off. Why should I have tv speakers competing with a top of the line soundbar? Your impression may vary. At least it's easily disabled.
Another feature, Spacefit Sound Pro, I was more interested in. This "calibrates" and adjusts the sound based on your specific area & acoustics. Having a room that was more "open" on one side than another, this suited my purpose. Not knowing the mechanics of it, I assume it is pumping more sound to the open area to fill the gap, I can only report that there is a difference, and it does sound better with the feature activated.
The rear speakers are impressive units, and are front, top, and side firing. They appear well constructed and deliver a clean clear sound with no evidence of distortion, rattling, etc. If you don't have a stand or mount for them, you will need to pick up a suitable product.
I'm not a student or disciple of surround sound, all I can say is I've been intrigued over the last week, hearing things in programming I haven't heard before, even in commercials. There is content that I wouldn't believe had been programmed for surround, yet I'm hearing distinctive sounds coming from the rear speakers - for instance, the Nascar race where you hear the sportscasters in the front, and the roar of the engines in the rear. Or maybe a commercial jingle pops different sounds out of the rear. I assume there is some decoding tech going on in the electronics, all I can say is I'm enjoying the hell out of it!
Also using the unit in combination with different devices, for instance, tapping on the soundbar with my Samsung phone to play content. Even more interesting, if you know what the Sound Burger is (a revival of an 80's mini portable turntable, now with Bluetooth - photo down below), I've connected that to the Q series to pump out some tunes. Yes, I do have an audiophile turntable in the same room, but as that doesn't use Bluetooth, I'll need some kind of RCA to HDMI device to make that magic as the Q only provides HDMI inputs.
If there's one thing I'd knock on the Q, I really don't care for the LED screen behind the grill - it's small & hard to see behind the grill. I would've preferred a small screen, perhaps on top, to better identify inputs - it's very difficult to determine what Bluetooth device you're connecting.
Other than that, very happy with the unit, and once again, thanks for making it so easy to hook up!

Design style not for everyone
The Samsung Q990D at first seems to be a modest upgrade from the previous Q990C, which is good considering the previous generation well received. The design still has the angular design of the previous generation consisting of an all metal and plastic. There is no cloth anywhere. Depending on your taste, it might seem modern or overly aggressive looking. Taking it out of the box the soundbar feels heavy and well built. The subwoofer and satellites are connected wirelessly and only need to be plugged into power. The included remote is a small with dark text. It is not backlit or very easy to feel controls. It seems to be intended to be a secondary form of control. The soundbar can be controlled directly via the SmartThings app. There is a dot matrix display behind the front speaker grill, but it is small and hard to read from any distance from the soundbar.
Setup 9/10
You can tell the Q990D was intended to take a lot of the complexity out of a home theater setup. If you aren’t going to mount it to the wall all you need to do is plug in the speakers and you are ready to go. There is no tuning needed as they are set to calibrate automatically if left in the default setup. You do have EQ options which default to a simple bass and trouble adjustment. Additional EQ options are available in standard mode but some modes limit EQ options. The standard mode leaves the sound as is. The other modes adjust the sound to give a more surround sound effect but straight out of the box the sound needs little tweaking. Setting up the soundbar in the SmartThings app allows you to configure additional options such as Chromecast, Airplay, or configure it as a SmartThings Hub with Matter support.
Atmos Performance 9/10
Like previous models, movies are where this soundbar shines, assuming you have the right room for it. The room it is being used in is near ideal being a rectangular shape with a flat 10-foot ceiling. The only two issues it is has is a door that is at a 45-degree angle and a ceiling fan and both those do hamper the performance slightly. When trying out surround affects it sounds like the right front channel is coming from about 4 feet to the right of the soundbar. Similarly, the top center right channel sounds just like it is coming from a place where there is no speaker. However, the left side of the room has that angled door. This causes the left from channel to not sound quite as distinct or far to the left and the top center left channel to also not sound as distinct. Height was also less distinct with the ceiling fan but still good. It is still a surprise that it can do it at all. If your room isn’t the ideal shape recommended for Atmos it isn’t going to work miracles. Furthermore, while impressive, don’t expect this to be as impressive as a full Atmos system with speakers all around you. Overall, the result is impressive enough to make you question if it is worth it to go through all the hassle and complication of a full discrete Atmos system with separate speakers.
Movies 9/10
Previous generations of this soundbar were great for movies and the Q990D is the same. In standard mode it plays the surround just as intended in the movies but if you like a little extra immersion, you can choose Adaptive Surround. While exactly how it works is a little vague, Adaptive Surround seems to take certain types of audio that would only play through the soundbar and play them through the surrounds as well. It brings the sound all around you but sometimes it goes a little too far and pipes the dialog of a person right in front you on the screen to every speaker in the room making it sound as if the person is talking around you. It really depends on your taste, but if you prefer a more natural sound then Standard works best. While the soundbar already sounds a bit bright, if you still have trouble hearing dialog it has two addional methods to help you hear what they are saying. First there is the traditional “Voice Enhancement” which ruins the rest of sound to favor dialog heavily. Unless you really have a hard time hearing dialog it is best to leave this setting off. If the natural tuning leaves you struggle still the “Active Voice Amplifier” is going to produce a more natural effect. It does still degrade the sound slightly but far better than old methods but in our family the default EQ does a nice job of making dialog understandable without sacrificing other sounds. While the highs are strong, the mids are slightly weak. While it is only slight, it makes deeper voices less pronounced but also removes some of the impact from certain action sounds in movies. That said, weaker mids generally seem common in soundbars, the result on the Q990D is minimal. The subwoofer is well matched to the setup and blends nicely with smooth bass that can also rumble in action scenes. The one place it is weak is in impactful bass. The sub just isn’t big enough to produce the hard thump without some distortion. Most people wouldn’t even notice it happening as it is subtle and normal in this size of system, but it doesn’t hold back some potential of the system.
A handle feature included with the soundbar is called Private Rear Sound. While most soundbars have a night mode, this one goes a step further. With the private rear surround is turns off the forward speakers and subwoofer and only plays audio through the rear surrounds allowing you to watch movies at night in bed without disturbing others. It works better than night mode because audio is close and clear instead of distant and quiet.
Music 7/10
Older versions of this soundbar were said to have great performance in movies but poor performance in music. While our family hasn’t had a chance to try the older version, the Q990D is a solid choice for music. It isn’t as good as it is for movies but it still, pleasant to play music on. The slightly bright tuning gives more of a presence to vocals but on occasion can sound slightly harsh. An example is Adele’s Hello. The Q990D really does a great job of reproducing the emotion in her voice but at the higher notes it can feel uncomfortable. This is more an audiophile critique whereas most people would think her voice sounds amazing on the Q990D. Overall, for such small speaker they do a very good job, but music still takes a back seat to movies. Just like in movies the subwoofer is well blended into the overall package and produces smooth, clean bass except for dynamic bass, such as a quick thump.
Final Thoughts
Samsung has created a well rounded Atmos soundbar setup with the Q990D. While it has room for improvement it does a great job of being a well-rounded surround setup for most. If you are in the market for a premium Dolby Atmost soundbar that is great for movies as well as good for gaming while being simple to setup and use, then the Samsung Q990D is worth serious consideration.
