The Samsung HW-Q990D Soundbar is an impressive follow-up to last year's flagship Q990C, which many considered the best Soundbar on the market. The Q990D maintains the same high-quality build, performance and understated style of its predecessor, the Q990C, while introducing some notable improvements.
The Q990D, like the Q990C, is a comprehensive four-piece Soundbar system that includes the main bar, a wireless subwoofer, and two wireless rear speakers. It supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X sound through an expansive 11.1.4 channels. The design of the Soundbar mirrors that of the Q990C, but it now includes HDMI 2.1 support, which is capable of handling 4K/120Hz signals. This is a substantial improvement over the Q990C, which did not support HDMI 2.1.
In terms of performance, the Q990D truly shines. It delivers an immersive Dolby Atmos and DTS:X sound experience. The clarity of the sound details is exceptional, allowing for a rich and nuanced audio experience. The precision and power of its effects placement are also noteworthy, creating a truly immersive audio environment. The subwoofer is incredibly powerful and seamlessly integrated, offering a strong low-frequency response.
When comparing the Q990D to the Q990C, the new model offers a similar performance with added features. The Q990C was already a high-end Soundbar, but the Q990D takes it a step further with HDMI 2.1 support and enhanced functionality for the rear speakers. When put up against other premium soundbars, the Q990D stands out due to its immersive sound experience and robust feature set.
If there's are shortcomings, I feel a bar of this caliber would benefit from an on-screen display that aids in setup and making adjustments. The current display is cumbersome at best, and almost useless at worst. Fortunately, once you’ve connected the SmartThings app, you have much quicker and easier access to all of the bar’s adjustments. It’s also disappointing that there’s no form of room correction here. I understand that part of the goal is keeping it simple for consumers, but we are talking about a Soundbar at the premium end of the market, so I don't feel that an on screen display that's easy to read or a sound correction system to automatically tailor the sound to a particular room are unreasonable expectations.
In conclusion, the Samsung Q990D Soundbar is a worthy successor to the acclaimed Q990C. It retains the strengths of the Q990C while introducing several meaningful improvements. If you’re in the market for a premium Soundbar that offers an immersive and detailed sound experience, the Samsung Q990D won't disappoint.

I recently purchased the Samsung HW-Q990D/ZA 11.1.4 Channel Q-Series Soundbar from Best Buy, and it’s transformed my home theater experience! The 11.1.4-channel setup, with wireless subwoofer and rear speakers, delivers jaw-dropping Dolby Atmos and DTS:X audio that fills my living room with immersive, three-dimensional sound. Watching movies feels like being in a cinema—sounds like rain, explosions, or dialogue move around and above me with incredible precision.
The Q-Symphony feature syncs perfectly with my Samsung TV, blending the TV’s speakers with the soundbar for a richer, more dynamic soundstage. Setup was a breeze; the wireless subwoofer and rear speakers connected effortlessly, and the SmartThings app made calibration and tweaks simple. The bass is deep and controlled, adding punch to action scenes without overpowering music or vocals. I also love the HDMI 2.1 support for 4K 120Hz passthrough, making it a gamer’s dream for my PS5 with zero lag. From blockbuster films to Spotify playlists, this soundbar handles everything with clarity and power. It’s a premium upgrade that’s worth every penny!

The Samsung Soundbar with Wireless Speakers is an absolute game-changer for home entertainment, and I can’t stop raving about it! From the moment I unboxed this sleek system, I was blown away by how effortlessly it came together. The setup process was, without a doubt, my favorite feature—simple, intuitive, and lightning-fast.
I started by unboxing the unit, plugging it in, and turning on my Samsung TV. Boom! Everything synced up perfectly, just as it was supposed to. No complicated manuals or endless troubleshooting—within minutes, the soundbar and wireless speakers were ready to fill my living room with rich, immersive sound. The wireless connection between the soundbar, subwoofer, and rear speakers was flawless, eliminating the hassle of running cables across the room.
Pairing my iPhone with the Samsung SmartThings app was equally seamless. I downloaded the app, and boom! My phone instantly became the ultimate remote control for both the TV and soundbar. With just a few taps, I could power the system on or off, adjust the volume, change TV channels, and fine-tune every setting imaginable. The level of control is nothing short of amazing—everything I need is right at my fingertips.
But the real magic happened when I connected my phone to the soundbar for music streaming. The connection was effortless, and in no time, I was blasting my favorite Pandora playlists through the soundbar’s speakers. Whether it’s Pandora or any other streaming app, the sound quality is phenomenal—crisp, clear, and powerful, with deep bass and immersive surround sound that elevates every song. The wireless speakers add a dynamic layer to the audio, making my living room feel like a concert hall.
Overall, I’m thrilled with this system. The sound quality is outstanding, the wireless setup is a dream, and the SmartThings app integration makes controlling everything a breeze. From setup to streaming, every aspect of this Samsung Soundbar with Wireless Speakers is totally awesome. I can’t say enough good things about it—it’s a must-have for anyone looking to upgrade their home audio experience!

This comes in one box and the setup is straightforward, couldn't be easier Plug and Play. All speakers are solid and high quality built. The scrolling screen inside could be bigger but just turn on The Voice in the smart things app and update it first. The sound is excellent and you have a lot of choices with the remote and the app with your cell phone. It really gives you that movie theater experience with sounds from different directions. Watching basketball sounds like you're in the Arena and football puts you right in the stadium. It gets plenty loud for me I wouldn't need it to be any louder and music sounds excellent as well crystal clear. No regrets, I would buy it again and I know I'll probably get 20 years use out of this cuz my last soundbar was a Samsung that I've had for 10 years and still works but I wanted something better. I bought it at Christmas time and got 500 bucks off

Simple to Setup, Amazing Sound

Bought this for my parents. The soundbar is incredible, especially at this price point. I do want to point out that I got it $700 off which makes it a better value in my opinion.
The sound is fantastic, and setup is straight forward. The dual HDMI ports is also an incredibly convenient decision that eliminates the need for additional hardware to utilize the soundbar with more than a single device.
I only have two complaints.
First, is how non-user friendly the interface is. It’s absolutely usable but cycling in order through all the settings on the terrible little screen on the soundbar leaves a lot to be desired. Sony puts a menu on the screen of the television to tweak the settings and it’s so much more convenient.
Second, is the settings. I looked through every single booklet and manual that came with the soundbar and couldn’t find an explanation to any of them. Some are self-explanatory but I wouldn’t say that’s the case for more than half of them. I’m sure the failure is mine but I couldn’t even find a single source of explanation online either. I had to visit multiple sites and even then people online seem to only be taking best guess at these settings.

Wow! My Living Room is Now a Cinema!

Alright, let me tell you, if you're on the fence about upgrading your home audio, just jump! I finally pulled the trigger on the Samsung HW-Q990D, and my living room has been completely transformed. Setup was shockingly easy – everything connected wirelessly, and I had true surround sound going in minutes. Movies with Dolby Atmos are an absolute game-changer. The sound just fills the room, coming from all directions, even overhead. It's truly mind-blowing, like being in a premium movie theater every time. Dialogue is crystal clear, and the subwoofer delivers this deep, rumbling bass that you can really feel without it being overwhelming.
I'm also a big gamer, and this soundbar is perfect for my PS5. The fact that it supports 4K/120Hz passthrough means I don't have to sacrifice any visual quality for amazing audio. Games sound incredibly immersive, whether it's footsteps behind me or explosions rocking the screen. Plus, with my Samsung TV, the Q-Symphony feature is just next-level. It blends the TV speakers with the soundbar so seamlessly that the soundstage feels even bigger and more cohesive. It really makes a difference, especially for those subtle environmental sounds.
Now, it's not absolutely perfect, but the minor gripes are easily overshadowed by the performance. The remote is a bit basic, so I mostly rely on the SmartThings app for tweaking settings, which honestly gives you more control anyway. Also, you'll need four power outlets (soundbar, sub, and two rears), so plan your cable management! But honestly, these are tiny trade-offs for the incredible audio experience you get. If you're serious about your home theater, the Q990D is worth every penny. You won't regret it!

The system sounds amazing once it is set up properly and the different settings optimized. My buddy has it and that convinced me to purchase it. I will say I wish it were easier to optimize for someone not very savvy on AV. I cant get the HDMI ARC to work, even though my TV has it, so I had to plug it into a different HDMI outlet on my TV.
I would have liked an option from Best Buy to just optimize the set up, as their delivery and install was $170 (including mounting). I did not want or need mine mounted. They used to have a geek squad service for a simpler request. Mine sounds good, but it doesnt quite have the same sound and bass as my buddy's.
I will say I also waited for this to be the deal of the day to save 50%. It is a great system, but not sure it would have been worth $2k.

For easy setup and great sound this is the way to go. Looked into inwall/ceiling speakers and av recievers but i didn't want the hassle.
I was a little skeptical of the 8" subwoofer but it fills the room with bas very well. Paired with a samsung tv and q-symphony really makes a difference.
Ran our old 2.1 sound bar between 45 and 55 for regular tv watching and even at 100 for movies it was not impressive. The 990D for regular watching is between 12 and 18. At 50 this think shakes the whole house. Beyond impressed with this speaker.

Alternative to Sonos

The 990D is an impressive soundbar! It sounds better than my Sonos system if I am being honest. This is a great alternative for those who want Dobly Atoms and sound comparable to Sonos for less.
I saw the Q990D on sale and jumped at it. I initially tried an open box that was listed as "excellent condition for $1100. However, it was not "excellent condition." It was on sale for $1499. Therefore, I purchased it new and returned the open box. I then found it for $897 on Woot (really wished Best Buy price matched with Woot).
For those who are not audiophiles but audiophile dabblers, this system almost knocked our house down during the first scene of Oppenheimer. My wife thought the Q990D sounded so good that she wanted me to purchase another one for our family room.
The setup is quick and easy. Comes with a soundbar, wireless subwoofer, and two wireless rear speakers (true wireless like Sonos).
Soundbar system that includes the main bar, a wireless subwoofer, and two wireless rear speakers. It supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X sound through an expansive 11.1.4 channels.
Overall, the sound quality is impressive and immersive. Bolstering 11.1.4 channels for Dolby Atoms and DTS-X support. The subwoofer is extremely powerful. If you are into gaming, the 4K/120Hz pass-through is awesome.

Samsung makes the best sound bar systems on the market. The sound from this setup is simply amazing. Go to a local BestBuy and hear it for yourself. Dialogue is clear, surround sound is immersive, and bass is appropriate. You will never reach the same level as a dedicated receiver and speakers, but for the price and the convenience...this is worth every penny.

**Finally, Samsung Nailed It - A Three-Time Owner's Perspective**
Rating: ★★★★★ (5/5)
As someone who's been in the Samsung soundbar ecosystem through three different models now, I can confidently say the HW-Q990D/ZA is the culmination of everything Samsung has been working toward. This is my third Samsung soundbar, and it's the one that finally delivers on every promise.
**The Sound Quality is Phenomenal**
The 11.1.4 channel setup with Dolby Atmos creates an immersive experience that rivals dedicated home theater systems I've heard. The overhead effects actually feel overhead - whether it's rain, helicopters, or ambient music, the height channels work brilliantly. Dialogue clarity through the center channel is crystal clear, even at lower volumes, which was something my previous models struggled with.
**Bass That Actually Impresses**
The wireless subwoofer hits deep without being muddy. Action movies have real impact, and music feels full-bodied without overwhelming the mids and highs. Having owned previous Samsung subs, this one finally has the punch and tightness I was hoping for all along.
**The Rear Speakers Make All the Difference**
The wireless rear speakers complete the surround experience in a way that even Samsung's earlier "virtual surround" attempts couldn't match. Gaming, movies, and even sports broadcasts benefit from true positional audio that wraps around you.
**Why I Keep Coming Back to Samsung**
Setup is straightforward, the Samsung ecosystem integration (especially with Samsung TVs through Q-Symphony) is seamless, and the app actually works well for adjustments. After trying other brands between my Samsung purchases, I keep coming back because the combination of features, sound quality, and ease of use is hard to beat at this price point.
**Bottom Line**
If you're considering the Q990D, especially as someone who's been eyeing Samsung soundbars or upgrading from an older model - do it. This is the soundbar Samsung should have made from the beginning, and as a loyal (perhaps stubborn) three-time customer, I'm thrilled they finally got it right.
Worth every penny for home theater enthusiasts who want flagship performance without the complexity of separate components

Great Sound, Stable Software - Just don't update

After having software issues with numerous soundbars that had me tearing my hair out (no audio, audio and video passthrough not working correctly, disconnects during Bluetooth and Chromecast), I appreciate how stable this soundbar is. I set it up, it didn't bug me about connecting it to wifi, I plugged in my numerous inputs and it all has been working flawlessly. 120hz HDR passthrough is excellent, it receives the proper audio formats from any source I send it, and works great connected to my Sony TV and various game consoles and PC. The sound quality is very good, rich and detailed and the vocals are *so much* clearer than I have heard from other soundbars (another reason I upgraded). The various sound modes are useful, there is a ton of customization, and the soundstage blew me away. It feels like a full surround sound system, really only lacking in some midbass detail which is to be expected of any soundbar. It's been a great purchase, well worth the money and upgrade for far less headache than my previous soundbar which had muddy dialogue and frequent disconnects (both of which made it hard to host seamless movie nights or watch parties).
The only last thing I will note is DO NOT update this soundbar or connect it to the internet or the phone app. Samsung has a long history of ruining devices with updates and this is apparently no different, with one update fully bricking the soundbar and another causing a ton of eARC dropouts. I bought the soundbar, set it up as is, and have tweaked it using the remote. If I want to Chromecast music to it, I Chromecast to my TV then turn the screen off, so the soundbar can stay fully offline. The app should let you disable auto updates, but there are many reports of this not actually preventing updates, so the only way to be truly safe is to keep it fully offline which is not a thankfully difficult thing to do! Giving it four stars for this reason. At this price, this should not be a problem. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, keep this thing offline and I think you'll fine it's an excellent sounding and stable soundbar that will accomplish just about anything you want it to.
