This machine is a beast. The others say that they have problems, but I have not had a single problem with this computer. I ran all the windows updates and haven't had any bluesceens. There hasn't been any speed issues either. I played Just Cause 2, which is a pretty graphic intensive game, on the highest settings at full speed. I also tried Skyrim on high settings and it ran smooth too. This laptop may not be the best gaming machine, but it definitively is for the price you pay. The specs are about the same of the 15" Macbook Pro with Retina Display. Yes, the one that cost $2200. In conclusion, for $1000, you get a lightweight (for it's size), powerful, very well built, relatively thin laptop. Please consider this buy. By the way, when I mentioned the trackpad in the what's not so great, I was talking about when the trackpad sometimes accidentally clicks on something when you are typing, but it rarely happens to me.

    Fantastic Laptop for Anyone

    Posted .

Let me begin by saying that this is most likely the best purchase I have ever made. This laptop does everything that I need it to do and more. That said, I want to analyze the different components of this 7 series to show you why you should get one too. First, lets start with the specifications. The 7 series has the Intel i7 3rd gen processors, and the speed has been fantastic for me. I am typing this review while running my music service, watching and video and browsing multiple websites, without any lag at all. This processor is the best you can get now as well, so that's also a plus. Next I want to talk about the display of this laptop. The resolution is better than anything I would need this computer for (I occasionally watch hd videos/movies, and 1600*900 is great for that.) Whats more, the matte finish on the screen really reduces glare and makes for great viewing. My previous computer had a glossy finish, and it was very hard to see in sunny/ bright areas. Some reviews I read complain that the screen washes out if not viewed straight on, but i only find this to be a problem if the screen is viewed at less than a 75 degree angle, which I never do. Moving on to build quality, this machine is near the top of its class. My previous laptop (a Dell, if you must know) had multiple problem with the hinges, screen and body. This series 7 has none of those. In fact, its build is very similar to the mac book pro, which is the gold standard for build quality in laptops. While the body of the computer is made of a composite alloy and not a solid body of aluminum, I perceive no real significant difference in longevity. Another factor that is very important to me is the reliability of the manufacturer. Samsung, while new to the laptop game, has been rated just behind Apple and tied with Asus in customer satisfaction and reliability. This bodes well for anyone who wants their laptop to not only last long but have a great company behind it as well. In conclusion, I would strongly recommend this computer for anyone who wants a high quality, top of the line laptop to use for literally anything you want to do. It can handle anything you throw at it, its light, has a great display (and battery, mind you) and is well built. Essentially, its a Mac Book Pro at a severe discount.

    Solid laptop, couple drawbacks

    Posted .

Overall, I'm rather pleased. For the general user, this is an awesome buy. It looks sleek, has a great battery life, great CPU power and it's rather light. However, I'm a hardcore gamer searching for the perfect compromise in power and portability. I mostly play games like World of Warcraft, Starcraft, Dota, Tribes Ascend, with the very occasional AAA title like Skyrim or Battlefield 3. It runs Warcraft on High settings, ~50-20 FPS depending on surroundings. Skyrim had to be turned down medium-low for acceptable performance. The 630m is a decent card, but it's not going to replace a desktop anytime soon. You can find great laptops of comparable weight and size with better performance online, but dealing with an online computer retailer can be a huge hassle. I'm pretty content with what I have from Best Buy. Other general notes, the Touchpad is really picky. Unless you tweak your registry settings like I did to get it perfect, it could leave you saying "why the heck does it do that?", things like it not being responsive while you have a key pressed down. The multi-touch controls are a shadow of the MacBook Pro's at best. Being a Windows user myself, I'm willing to make this sacrifice! Most of the laptop is covered in metal, which makes it look really nice, but for some reason the bottom has a plastic shell around it, the lip of which sticks up just barely above the metal on the base, so if your wrist is sitting on it, it's going to hurt, even after a few minutes. The built-in mic lies just below where my wrist sits while in the standard WASD gaming position, which is an annoyance for VOIP. This wouldn't be a problem if the laptop actually had more than one combined audio jack, which I didn't know anyone even uses a mic/headset combo for anything but an iPhone. Minor complaints for a very all-around good laptop, however.

    Powerful and solid laptop

I'm a business road warrior for the past 10 years. Always been using a Dell Latitudes as our official business laptop. I've had 3 in past decade. Finally convinced our IT to provide me a Samsung high end with this Chronos series 7. Very solid and ultra powerful 3rd gen i7. Tons of HD space with 1TB and decent memory at 8GB. Display is great too but might not be for gamers which I'm not. Speakers are good but again not for users looking for something like Beats Audio or Harman-Kardon. This is not an entertainment laptop. No blue-ray as well but they manged to squeeze in a DVD R/W drive slot just like the Mac Books. I highly recommend this for users looking for powerful proc and huge storage. I travel a lot so the thin profile is perfect. Weight is definitely lighter than my usual Latitude so it is acceptable at just over 5lbs. I wish it was lighter but that's the trade off for a screen of 15.6" and full features like back-lit keyboard with numeric keys extension. Battery life is acceptable too as I average over 6 hours. HD webcam and built-in mic are very handy for Skyping and other video call. Only thing I miss on my Latitude is the use of my docking port. But not a deal breaker, I can live with that. Definitely a keeper and looking forward to years of mobile computing.

The Series 7 chronos will do everything you need.

I'm an computer hardware engineering student so I needed something that could handle the workloads I'll encounter in my classes as well as be a useable work PC when I'm finished and in the field. I chose this primarily because it had the new 3rd Generation Core i7. After playing around with it I do believe I made a great choice. The 8 way multitasking works amazingly with the Adobe program suite, using Photoshop, In Design, and Dreamweaver simultaneously the system is smooth as butter. This system multitasks like a dream. Gaming on this laptop is extremely nice as well for it not being a high end gaming PC. Portal 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Fallout New Vegas, and other games have no problem playing, and have great frame rates even on battery power. The speakers are LOUD coming out of such a small package and surprisingly clear for the volume. I honestly think the speakers are louder that the ones in the HP Beats Audio notebooks. The matte screen is also a nice feature, the notebook can be used outside without the sun drowning out the picture or causing glare. The only issue that I had with this notebook was the adaptive brightness software that Samsung pre-installed. It's easy enough to turn it off and handle the screen and keyboard brightness manually. For the money this does anything you want out of a PC at hundreds less than comparable i7 laptops. Very pleased with this purchase.

    After 2 weeks, very pleased

    Posted .

After a couple of weeks, this seems to be pretty much what I was looking for. It's slim and not much bigger than the 15.6" screen size. BB had the new Ivy Bridge i7 for same price as the previous i7 $999. Good deal as far as Im concerned with the 1TB drive and 8GB ram. I originally ordered a Sony Vaio and was unimpresed with the feel of the unit, the keyboard, and the overall size. This is better on all accounts. Note that you'll need an adapter to drive VGA monitor (sold separately.) One more thing - so far, the sleep function is working very well. It comes out of sleep in a few seconds and is ready to use.

    One powerful machine

    Posted .

I have had this laptop for over 70 days and I am completely satisfied. I bought it in San Diego to take with me overseas. First of all if you don’t change the settings for the track pad the default is to hold onto an item for 10 seconds once you click. Not sure why it is defaulted like this but it is easy to change and frustrating if you don't. The track pad is great. It has several different methods of using multiple finger modes and movements for macros. Very handy if you set it up right. This laptop can handle Fallout 3 New Vegas and Arma 2 easy. It is funny because if you go to “can you run it” it says the computer cannot handle it but it can. Upon running “dxdiag” even the computer thinks it doesn’t have a beefed up video card. I spoke with a Samsung representative and he would have been happy to assist me with this issue but again it runs the games mentioned above and would not be able to if it only had an “HD Graphics Family” video card. I had some trouble using the magicjack on my laptop because 1) I couldn’t hear others and 2) they couldn’t hear me. Fixed by a computer restart and upgrade. I did have to increase the microphone volume through settings. I love the convenience of plugging an HDMI cable from the laptop to the TV without having to move the desktop computer into the living room blah blah. I love love love the backlit keyboard. Brightness can be changed. This laptop is very fast. It is BETTER than any Mac I have ever seen/used and a fraction of the price. It is a Macbook in a Samsung body with a Samsung price. Going from sleep to awake takes less than 5 seconds. The battery life on this thing is amazing. Before this i7 I had a 7 year old Acer that could only run on AC power. So going from that to this thing that can run 7+hours doing small things or 4+hours playing New Vegas is beyond a step up. At first I was weary because of all the negative reviews and criticism but I am so glad I went ahead and bought this marvelous machine. I am impressed and am extremely happy with the price I paid.

    Great first laptop

    Posted .

I absolutely love this laptop. I received it as a graduation gift and it's perfect. I really wanted a laptop that could handle Diablo 3, and this one easily can. It's not a gaming laptop, but it works for the everyday user. It runs super fast, and it can handle everything I throw at it. It also feels very sturdy for its size. I don't feel like I'm about to break it every time I pick it up. It's sleek and not that heavy and It feels like it is made to last. I love the keyboard, it's really similar to a mac (keyboards are the only thing I like about macs, other than that they are trash. no offence). The sound quality of the internal speaker is also quite good. I also got the surprise of an HDMI hookup when I picked up the laptop from the store. Online it said it didn't have one, which i was ok with, but when it arrived, it magically acquired one! The only thing I don't like is the touchpad. It can be too sensitive, or not sensitive enough. I just use a wireless mouse instead. All in all, this is a wonderful laptop, and I love it. I wouldn't have gone with anything else.

Top of the line configuration, priced right!

    Posted .

I've shopped extensively for a new laptop. I typically keep my machines for 4+ years and so top of the line performance and options at time of purchase are important. My search goals included: fast bootup (this has steady state ram on processor for fast boot up and loading of frequently used programs - working well for me; booting takes about 25 seconds); lots of hard drive for storing raw images (this computer comes with 1TB), dedicated graphics card/memory for ease and capacity in editing photos and videos (Nvidia card with 512mb - handles Lightroom fine so far); thin and light enough to carry around the house and on occasional trips (~5lbs - felt heavier than i expected - but computer is quite thin); and long battery life so we didnt have to keep it plugged in (we are seeing about 6 hours with battery set at max recharch of 80% - Samsung's recommended setting for extending battery life, important since I keep laptops for years). The bonus items I wasn't expecting: 1 - the trackpad and multi-gesture functionality mirrors Mac capabilities and these functions are quite cool and convenient. Function has worked great for me and my wife. 2 - backlit keyboard and full number pad are actually quite convenient now that I have them. 3 - not a lot of bloatware installed or taking up valuable hard drive space. 4 - aluminum case is beautiful and nice to the touch. High quality build and feel; and wife keeps saying how nice it looks; I agree. All in all, this laptop offers top of the market performance (newest 3rd gen i7 Intel) and fantastic blend of features/characteristics for the active home user who needs ease of use and capability. I shopped around alot and not only is this laptop the best choice for the needs i described, but Best Buy actually had the best price (I don't normally shop here because that is rarely the case, especially on accessories -i.e. cables etc...). If your needs are similar to mine, you cannot go wrong with this laptop.

Good bang for buck, but not without problems

    Posted .

This computer really has quite the spec list for the price. You'd be hard pressed to find these specs for a better deal. Two features that are nice but not perfected are the backlight for the screen AND the backlit keyboard. They both are supposed to sense the light in the room and adjust themselves.... both work about 80% of the time... sometimes its hard to get the keyboard light to even turn on. If you can get past those issues, it seems like a real powerhouse of a computer and has been able to run multiple programs with more than enough memory for any average user. Seems to be built well, although it looks better then it is. I wish all the metal looking parts were ALL actually metal, but the bottom and some parts are plastic. That said, it still feels solid. I have noticed if you try to carry it with one hand while open, the mouse clicker sometimes thinks you are clicking it. Other times, the keypad is unresponsive. Have not ran into any freezeup that couldn't be fixed, but at 1000 dollars, some of these issues should be smoother. BUT for the features at this price, this is a great deal. Would like to see a blu-ray player and higher res screen. But that would add 200 bucks to the price, and if its important you can get an external drive I suppose. The matte screen IS AWESOME for anyone working outside or in a bright lit area, but when compared to other screens indoors, it is noticeably less bright. Personally what it lacks in brightness and resolution it more than makes up in the ability to see the screen when outside. Speakers are more than adequate for a laptop device, especially given how thin it is. The touchpad itself has some glitches and could be better explained, but does have some nice gesture type moves in it, such as two fingures to scroll. Also has the number pad which may be more important to some then others. Overall, it really packs a punch and if you can get past a few minor issues and appreciate the matte screen over a bit more resolution, you really are getting some spectacular specs for the price.

    Good laptop for general use

    Posted .

I purchased this unit for general family use. We've had it now for about a month. Battery lasts pretty well compared to past laptops I've owned. Screen is bright -- in fact, I've had to turn the brightness down some. Keyboard is functional and keys are spaced naturally. Power brick is small and light, so travelling is easy. Laptop is very thin, which is a plus. Unit plays DVD's and videos fine with no pixelation or hang-ups. Minor issues: IE has crashed on me a couple of times, but that could be Microsoft issue, not Samsung. Also, this unit is heavier than most comparable. With such a thin laptop, I didn't expect it to be so heavy. Major issue: touchpad. It's super sensitive, and the left/right clicks don't work well. Samsung tried to copy Apple functionality, but really dropped the ball. I constantly bump this oversized pad with my left palm while typing. Clicking (especially right-clicking) doesn't always work, so I have to "click" it again. And, unlike MacBooks, it is a physical click, not a virtual one. Both my son and I use mouse when using the laptop for extended use--the touchpad is such a pain. For comparison, I have different brand laptop with a touchpad that I use for business, and never have any issues with it (so I don't think the issue is me!). To summarize, it's a decent laptop. It works as expected. It has long battery life and thin case. It's just a heavy unit with a substandard oversized touch pad.

5 Star Laptop!!! Way to go Best Buy!!!

    Posted .

If you know how to shop for a laptop then this laptop should be a 5 star laptop! (if not, get help to understand why it is so good) Samsung designed a beautiful desktop/apple replacement latpop. It has all the features you want but doesn't cost you an arm and a leg. Backlit keyboard, screen and touchpad are amazing. The intel 3rd gen i7 processor and Nvidia graphics make a perfect match for performance. I see alot of new 2012 laptops coming out with this combination but cost $200 more. The specs alone are beyond the price! Bottom line: Perfect laptop for some one shopping for a high end laptop and get the maximum amount of specs for the price!

Fantastic Computer, Exactly What I wanted

    Posted .

I would give this computer a perfect score if it wasn't for the keypad. I want to love everything, but that friggin' keypad is just so aggravating.... I bought an external mouse with it at the same time though, so I don't have to bother with it. The display is magical. I've used it in bright daylight, and I have still been able to see everything on the screen, a feat that I have not been able to on any other laptop that I have used. The battery life, for me is right around 7 hours, which is great, but I rarely take it off the charger because I have no need to move it. As for the keyboard, the chicklet keys are awesome. I don't really need the backlight function, but they are very easy to use and don't require any effort to depress. The processor in this thing is also awesome. I have had games running, three or four internet tabs open, and a few programs downloading, all at the same time, with minimal lag. All in all, this computer is just about as good as a computer can get for the price. If it wasn't, I wouldn't spend the time recommending it, and you can be certain that I wouldn't be giving it such a good recommendation if I did. Perfect for light to heavy use, and for beginners to professionals. I just love this thing.

    A little bit of everything

    Posted .

I need this laptop every day, this means I carry it around a lot. The things I do with it are internet research, some modeling, image editing, vector graphics design, reading and writing. I bought it because with its start-up boosting ssd and designated graphics card it seemed to close the gap between ultrabooks and regular 15" power-notebooks. What I very much liked was the design. This started with the brushed aluminium look of the case, went on with the clearly designed back-lit keyboard and ended with the power button, that consists only of a cut-out of the power-logo (small things but I really loved this). Another great thing is the slot-in DVD Writer. I very much prefer slot-in drives to trays. I find them just so much cooler while the trays are awkward at best, flimsy and easily broken at worst. The 3rd generation Intel Core i7 processor offers native USB 3.0 support and, consequently, 2 USB 3.0 ports are present. The 8GB SSD promised to boost the windows start and most heavily used programs, while the 1GB rotating hard drive offers enough space that no external USB drive will be needed for some time. Unfortunately the 8GB are not enough to hold everything Windows needs to start, therefore the effect wasn't all that great, especially when compared to a SSD-only Laptop. The Monitor has a TN-display with a 1600x900 resolution. While the resolution is not great it is okay for a 15" and better than most laptops offered today. For me a higher resolution was important since I tend to have a lot of opened programs cluttering my workspace. The resolution just barely did it for me, but I would have accepted that, unfortunately the display has the problem of most TN-displays, meaning that the contrast is very sensitive to the angle at which the monitor is viewed. If you move your eyes up, down or sideways just a little the contrast changes and indeed it was not even possible to find a position from which the whole display showed the same contrast and color. After all is said, this is a decent laptop that is fun to work with. The backlit keyboard allows for precise typing, it is reasonably fast, the DVD drive offers multimedia capabilities and using that power-button after opening the case just makes your day. On the other hand it is quite heavy if you carry it around with you every day and the thing that really bummed me out was the angle dependance of the display. Also be aware of some installed bloatware.

    Great Performance

    Posted .

Purchased for my Daughter for college, but now I want one for myself. Setup was easy and installation of MS Office and other software products was accomplished much quicker that I had anticipated. Even installed Diablo 3 & StarCraft2 and able to run both games on meduim or high settings, pretty good for a laptop. Pretty impressed so far. Only issues so far, is the sound. Not the greatest, but can be addressed with speakers, including bluetooth speakers and the Camera is a bit touchly in low light situations. DVD took a few moments to figure out what keyboard keys to use to eject the dvd since there is not eject button located next to the dvd slot.

Great laptop except for one major flaw

    Posted .

I am the previous owner of Dell Inspirion and Lenovo Thinkpad T61P laptops. Samsung computers weren't even on my radar. I was immediately attracted to the Chronos Series 7 because of its sleek, lightweight case, hard drive capacity , Intel core i7 cpu, RAM, fantastic LCD display and graphics card, cost to benefits, Samsung convenience software, and being able to enter hibernation mode by closing the LCD panel. I WAS concerned about how well the touchpad would operate since it combines several functions such as left/right click, scroll, and navigate. I was initially very happy with this computer although I had immediate problems using the touchpad and with the space bar on the keypad. I thougt that the touchpad and space bar issues would resolve as I adapted to using the laptop. However, I detest the touchpad and now use a wireless mouse to avoid using it. The space bar seems to be very sensitive to touch pressure and I have constant problems with a space not being inserted between words while I am typing and I have to go back and fix the text. I am concerned about the overall workmanship and longevity of the computer since the multi-card reader died after one month. This is covered under the warranty, but I have to send the computer to a service center to have the card reader replaced and this will take 4-6 weeks, so I will be without a computer at home during this time. Another related repair issue to consider is that the computer battery cannot be changed by the user and must also be replaced by Samsung. Overall, although this laptop has many great features, my experience with the touchpad, space bar, and failure of the card reader are deal killers for me. As an owner of a Samsung Smartphone and TV, I have come to expect, and receive, a high level of product quality. Unfortunately I am disappointed by this laptop.

I needed to replace my circa 2003 Dell laptop and searched around for a speedy, stylish, 'modern' laptop. This Samsung is super fast, sleek, and all around a great laptop. It was very easy to set up and I love the backlit keyboard. I plan on using this for years, so I went with the series 7, 8 GB, etc. So far, so good, I've had it a little over a month...no issues. I use it at home only for email, general surfing, social media, photo storage, and music storage mostly. In general, I love it.

Great specs on the laptop, Samsung did really make a great laptop, but with the slow hard disk all the work put into creating a fast laptop bottlenecks to the Hard drive. Increase to a 7.2K disk or a SSD will really skyrocket this laptops performance.

One of the best notebooks for $1000

    Posted .

Other than the Macbook Pro Retina, this is one of the best PC laptops on the market. For $1000 it doesn't get much better. The only thing I don't like is the display. For me, after seeing the Macbook Pro Retina display, nothing else compares. Once Samsung catches up on the display (and they most certainly will), this will be an incredible notebook for the price.
