Easy to Use, but Not So Smart

If you've never had a modern Blu-Ray player before, the first thing that strikes you about this unit is that it is completely useless without the remote control. While this is hardly a new phenomenon, this player takes it almost to its logical conclusion. My conventional DVD player at least lets you play, stop and skip to the next or previous chapter from its front panel. This player has just two buttons on it - Power and Eject - and no indicator lights. Hookup is simple enough: The player has an HDMI port, an Ethernet port and a wi-fi radio built in. The HDMI cable is not included, so be sure to buy one if you don't already own one. You plug the player into your TV set with the HDMI cable. (If your TV set is old enough that it doesn't have an HDMI port, you can buy an RF adapter to convert to Component, Composite, SVHS or coaxial, but you'd probably be better advised to buy a different player, one that has whatever connection your TV set has.) More about the network setup later. The player is a bit slow to boot up. Modern HDTV sets can also be slow to boot up, and this can be a bit disconcerting at first if you're used to older components, which were pretty much instant-on. Expect to wait a good 15 seconds after pressing the power button before it sends any output to your TV set. Once the player is booted and displaying on the TV set, operation with the remote is fairly intuitive. If you put a disc in, the player will automatically switch to DVD mode and begin to play your disc. Simple enough. But you don't buy this player just to watch movies on discs. (If that's all you want, there are cheaper, simpler units on the market.) I, for one, was very interested in seeing what Internet content I could watch with it. To watch Internet content, the first thing you need to do is connect the set to your network. (If you don't have a network in your home, now you have a reason to get one.) This process is fairly straightforward. If you only have a wired network, you have various options for getting an Ethernet connection to your Blu-Ray player; I won't detail them here. Most people reading this probably have wi-fi networks, and will want to connect wirelessly. Either way, the guided setup procedure for the player walks you through the process of connecting to and verifying your network. Alas, the player doesn't do WPS, so you will need your wi-fi passphrase, if connecting to a wireless network, and you will need to type it in using the guided setup's on-screen keyboard, which is a rather tedious process. The product info for this player boasts that there are over 240 "apps" for it. Unfortunately, this is something of an overstatement. The player's home screen includes "presets" for VUDU, HULU, Netflix, Amazon Video, and YouTube. There is a button you can select that lets you add more presets, but just about the only thing you can add from there is something called the Opera Store, which turns out to be where most of the "apps" are located. The Opera Store is a vast collection of vintage, foreign and indie movies, sports, and how-to videos. It requires no subscription, is mostly free of charge, and is rather fun to explore, but all the video content is heavily laden with VERY repetitive advertising. I already knew that VUDU is a service that offers nothing free, but I was disappointed to find that HULU no longer offers anything free. YouTube is free on the player, just as it is on your computer, although you may occasionally run into a video that requires you to log into your Google account before you can watch it.That process is tedious and involves switching between devices, since the player offers no way to log on. The player does support screen-casting from YouTube on your smartphone, tablet or computer to the player. That's handy, because the on-screen search engine is slow and hard to use, while searching YouTube from smartphones, tablets and, especially, computers is a snap. The only "gotcha" is that your smartphone, tablet or computer must remain on and awake in order for this to work, and screen-casting will deplete the battery charge fairly quickly. Therefore, you'll want to keep whatever you're screen-casting from plugged into its charger while you do this. I haven't poked around enough to find out if you can screen-cast from the other "apps". I'm also an Amazon Prime customer, so I can get lots of nice video content from there at no extra charge. Most Internet video access works well (assuming your network connection is strong and your Internet bandwidth is decent) and intuitively, although interrupting YouTube videos and backing out to your search results is less than obvious. Unfortunately, there seems to be no way to add more apps to this player. (Fancier, more expensive Samsung players do allow you to get more apps from Samsung's proprietary app store.) Another thing that the on-screen, guided setup procedure does is ask if you want to download a software update for the player. I strongly advise that you do this - and I would strongly advise downloading and installing any future software updates that the player might ask you about. Maybe one of them will make the Smart features smarter! Those who prefer not to juggle a lot of remotes will be pleased to know that most cable TV system remotes can be programmed to operate this unit with full functionality.

I bought because I wanted one that worked with both wired and wireless connection and streams Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and You tube + others. I had video problems util we upgraded out router. No light or display. The manual indicates that you can rip music tracks from cd to flash drive but I haven't tried it since I have a computer. Works fine streaming and playing Blu Ray and DVD disks.

Since we had to upgrade everything else when our plasma went bad, we decided to upgrade to the blu ray also. Was a choice between this and one other brand and only reason we went this route was price. $40 is $40 to serve the same purpose any would, and the quality it plays seems good. We haven't watched many blu rays yet but noticeable difference between DVD and blu ray. Didn't need the 4K or streaming (tv not 4K but has smart options) but price was right and cheap enough that we can upgrade to 4K if we decide to upgrade tv down the road. Only downfall is same as everyone else...no power indicator, which doesn't affect us much because of the way our tv switches inputs letting us know it's off, but a light would still be nice.

Good buy for the price. Let's get the cons out of the way. 1. They all look alike. If you buy the least expensive unit or the top of the line you can't tell them apart by looking at them. I guess that could go pro or con depending on your view. 2. The remote is a little bit on the small side. If you need reading glasses put them on. It's packed with lots of buttons and tiny words. 3. For the 3rd. and final con, there's no power light. Nothing to indicate the unit is on. My tv is another matter, but, it has 4 HDMI slots, a TV, DVI, S-Video, Video, YPbPr1 & 2 and a PC slot. If you're like me and live with someone who pushes every button on the TV remote before they call you into the room and say "The TV's not working right" you're gonna be frustrated. A lot. Now, the Pro's 1. It's small. It fits pretty much anywhere. 2. It has apps so it replaced my Roku. Moved the Roku into the guest room. (That could be a negative at some point though.) 3. Wireless internet connection. No more than a power cord and the HDMI. If your internet source isn't right next to your TV no worries. Before you would have had to run an Ethernet cable long enough to get from the TV to your router. That's gone. 4. It's not overly complicated. Fairly straightforward. 5. Overall worth the money.

OK blu ray player though not perfect

I have used this player for over a month now with ok results so far. It plays up to 1080p blu rays and the picture quality is sharp with decent color saturation. I have streamed netflix and amzon prime content and have not experienced any download delays or dropped signal issues. Though I must confess that the blu ray is located close to my WIFI router where the signal is strong. My main issue with this player is that the app suite it comes with is limited in sports related content. There is no MLB app for instance. Also, the remote cannot open/close the disc tray. Has to be done manually. As others have also mentioned, there is no on/off light to show the player is on. But for the person who is only looking for a basic player at a reasonable price this player will satisfy most needs. Unfortunately, the lack of sufficient sports apps was a deal killer for me.

Started with a different player that froze the same day I used it. Brought it back and got the Sony player as a replacement. So far no problems....streams Netflix and Hulu, blu-ray looks great. Only drawback is there is no display so you cannot tell by looking at the player how much time has passed.

A good blu-ray player for the money. I like that it has wi-fi so I can watch shows on netflix and amazon prime. The only negative is that this player does not have a power indicator, which makes it difficult to tell if it is off or on.

This is a nice little Blu-ray player that I am using to replace my PS3, which used to be in our bedroom (It's been moved to the family room so the kids can use it more and stay out of our room :). It's small, very easy to use, especially compared to the PS3 Blu-ray and basically has turned our older LCD TV into a "Smart TV". It was easy to set up and we can stream media from our smart phones thru it to the TV but usually have the laptop or portable hard drive hooked up to it which allows us to use our 55" flat panel "dumb" TV as a Smart TV. Awesome little box has opened up many new possibilities for entertainment. Now, if we want to watch TCM, HBOgo, Hulu, Net-Flix, etc, we just run it thru this Blu-ray player and ...BOOM, we're at the movies on the big screen! There's plenty of similar devices and I'm sure many of them are excellent but for <$80 the wife & I have a "smart" TV & a small Blu-ray player that's easy to use and has a great picture. You can also hook up to your network router, an HDMI or WiFi device and external hard drive to tap into load of movies, pictures or whatever you could want to see! Lots of bang for the buck in this nice Samsung unit.

Works fine. Connected to my wireless network first try and has remained connected since, several weeks. Great for watching Netflix. Adequate DVD player. One annoyance is there is no light on the machine to I dictate if it is on or not. You can't tell at a glance.

Very good Blu Ray player for the price. The picture it shows is really nice as well. I've most streamed Netflix through the device and it was worked beautifully. I would say the only downside that it's a little lite of features but it does it's job.

This Blu-Ray player produces an excellent picture -- even better than our previous player! Its built-in Wi-Fi offers us freedom in how we connect to anything that we might want to stream, as well. The price was as good as the product-- VERY reasonable!

I bought this blu-ray player for my mother for Christmas, and she loves it. Truth be told, she's only watched one blu-ray disc with it, but she constantly streams Netflix with the device. I don't think she's watched cable TV since she got it. The only issues we've had with it is that it doesn't have a power indicator, so you don't know if the player's on unless you actually see the home screen come up on the television. Also, the player has to be rebooted pretty often, but thankfully, we only have to unplug it for a second and plug it back in, and it's working just fine again. I'd recommend it to anyone.

My TV is approx 5 years old, I needed to replace my original blu-ray player, and did not want or need a top end device with the latest technology. This player had everything I needed to include both built-in WiFi and ethernet port. It was also priced well. It's small and sleek but not necessarily exciting to look at. The only thing that I do not like is that it does not have any LED or light source to indicate that the device is recieving power after plug in and/or a power on/off indicator.

I purchased this unit to replace a dying HT system and needed the DVD player. Since I don't have a 4K system, I had no need of the bigger, pricier DVD players. This unit was great and reasonably priced. Connections were made very quickly and easily, and the interface with the TV is seamless. My only complaint is that it does not have any sort of light system to confirm that the unit is, in fact, turned on and working, but that has no effect on how the player works. I also use the unit to stream Netflix, Amazon, etc. Works great!

I needed a device with wifi and streaming capabilities for my non smart tv. I have two other Samsung smart tvs so I thought I would give this a shot. It played blu rays fine. The box would freeze quite frequently while watching Netflix. It would lock up with a black screen and it was hard to reset the box because there is no LED letting you know it is on. I ended up exchanging it for the equivalent Sony wifi blu ray player. Best Buy did an even exchange and the Sony is working fine!

I connected this unit to my series 8 Samsung 4K TV. This unit sets up easily with on screen instructions if needed. The viewing quality is great and picture is crisp and clear. When I made this purchase the unit did not indicate that it up scales the picture quality to 4K. The surprising picture quality may be due to brand compatibility due to both units being Samsung. The sound quality of the unit remains consistent with the natural TV sound when playing DVD's, BD's, as well as CD's. Good purchase value for the price.
