Good product and decent price. Also fairly easy to use.

There really aren't downsides I can see with this hard drive. If you need something with a bit more space than your typical USB drive but not as bulky as most other external drives, this is a nice little pickup that should suit just about anyone's needs.
While it's bigger than your typical USB drive, it's not bulky or cumbersome as you would think. Dimension wise, it's a bit larger than a business card and neatly fits into your hand. The weight is really negligible IMO so it'll fit easily into your backpack or purse without issue. This is a "rugged" model so it's dust/water resistant, I can't really think of a scenario where this would be beneficial for me however, if you're a field photographer or doing anything tech related out in the wild blue yonder, this might be a nice pickup if you need to offload files from memory cards or something. For me, I'm a desk jockey so this will work perfect for me for transporting files and what not from home to office.
It comes with two cables; One USB-C to USB-C and one USB-A to USB-C. For max speed, the USB-C to USB-C cable is ideal however it works fine with the USB-A cable since this is USB 3.2. 1TB, for me, is perfect for just about everything. From decks to large spreadsheets; there's no issue for me with running out of space on this drive .
The only small thing I can pick out from this is that the coating on this drive is kind of a rubbery, matte finish. It picks up lint quite well and in great quantities so this should be something of interest for you. I kind of wished it was a smoother texture however, this being somewhat of a rugged drive, I guess it makes more sense to have this finish instead.
I have oodles of USB drives lying around so I think it might be time to consolidate those into this one and have this as my main on-the-go drive.

The Samsung T7 Shield 1TB External USB 3.2 Gen 2 is a blazingly fast solid state storage device. Ruggedly encapsulated in a rubberized enclosure, this drive is easy to hold on to and is perfect for on-the-go use. Built to withstand a drop up to 9.8 feet, so throw it in your briefcase or purse, plug it in on the go; it is always ready to overachieve. It has an IP65 rating for protection from water and dust.
With USB 3.2 Gen 2 and PCIe NVMe, this speed demon features sequential read/write speeds of up to 1,050/1,000 MB/s. It is built in your choice of 2) enormous capacities: 1TB or 2TB and packaged in 3) colors: Blue, Black or Beige.
This solid state drive is compatible with Mac, PC, Android devices, even gaming consoles. I tested it on my Mac Pro and it was instantly recognized & ready for plug and play action. Most impressive to me was how I can edit 4K video on the fly with this drive, thanks to the ridiculously fast speed!
CONCLUSION:
I love this solid state mega drive! It does not slip out of your pocket or fall off of a portable desk if nudged, because of the rubberized case. It is the fastest, coolest running drive I have ever tested. It earns my Highest Recommendation!
I am glad to see that you are happy with this drive's performance.
Engineered with no moving parts and a sturdy metal body, it can handle drops of up to 9.8 feet. The T7 Shield SSD allows you to take along large amounts of data so you can get things done wherever you go.

INTRO
The Samsung T7 Shield is the newest 1TB external SSD from Samsung. It is an NVME drive inside an external enclosure and wrapped in a rubberized sleeve. It is shock rated for drops and is IP65 rated against moisture and dust intrusion. The drive includes a USB-A to USB-C cable and a USB-C to USB-C cable. Samsung claims a theoretical throughput capability of up to 1000MB/s.
SYSTEM CONFIGURATION
My test rig is the Asus ROG Zephyrus. It has a 12th generation Core i9 processor, 16GB of DDR-5 RAM, and Windows 11, with all the latest updates and drivers installed. The Asus sports the latest generation Thunderbolt 4 port, capable of transfer speeds up to 40Gb/s, which is more than enough to test the limits of the T7.
Windows 11 immediately recognized the drive after connecting it and no further interactions were required to get the drive up and running. I downloaded the latest version of the Samsung Magician software and CrystalDiskMark to get the information from the drive. I am happy to report this external SSD is equipped with a USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface. While not as fast as Thunderbolt 4, USB 3.2 Gen 2 is still very fast and supports speeds up to 10Gb/s or 1250 MB/s.
TEST RESULTS AND SAMSUNG MAGICIAN SOFTWARE
How did the T7 Shield perform? Speed are listed below:
Sequential Read: 763 MB/s
Sequential Write: 866 MB/s
Both results are with Queues of 1 and Thread Counts of 1. Excellent performance. The drive is speedy and responsive. While it doesn’t live up to Samsung’s 1000MB/s claim, it comes very close. Closer than most drives do with manufacturer’s advertised speeds. For comparison, I included a screen shot of the speeds from the latest Western Digital Black 2TB Game Drive. I know it is an apples to oranges comparison, putting an SSD up against a HDD, but the differences in performance are phenomenal. If anyone is still using an external HDD for storage and is on the fence of whether they should upgrade, the performance improvement should answer your questions.
The Samsung Magician software, as always, is polished and very refined. The software allows you to manage nearly every aspect of the T7 and is user-friendly and intuitive. Samsung wisely includes the option to password protect the T7 which is a great feature for travel.
NEGATIVES
This is one of the very few times I am at a loss for words.
FINAL THOUGHTS
The Samsung T7 Shield is an excellent external USB SSD. It is compatible with Windows, Mac, and Android. It is small, light, and is rated against dust and water intrusion. The rubberized covering helps to protect it from the inevitable drops. Samsung has long been a standout in the world of solid-state drives. Their drives always boast some of the best performance and warranties in the business. I see the T7 Shield fully living up to Samsung’s well-deserved reputation.
Easily Recommended.

For me, external SSDs are a bit of an oddball. They tout loads of performance, but being limited by the interface speed of USB. That said, this drive is fully capable of saturating the maximum speed of a USB SuperSpeed 10Gbps interface.
To start, the drive is packaged well in a small, unassuming box. It includes 2 different USB cables which I'm fully appreciative of (one type-c to type-c, and one type-a to type-c) which is a breath of fresh air that they dont assume one particular interface over another. This packaging, like so many others recently, appears to be made of thin cardboard and fully recyclable without having to be creative with removing plastic or clamshells or anything. It seems an odd thing to call out in a review, but I feel like this more sustainable direction that companies are headed in, particularly those the size of Samsung, are worthy of note.
Now for the drive. It's small in size, about the size of a deck of cards, but not quite as thick. The drive is covered in a rubberized exterior which is nice to the touch, although it picks up dust like crazy, which for anyone with a computer, can be a little bit of a concern as the drive will likely sit near a dusty area. The rubberized exterior also makes it difficult to brush off that dust, but honestly it does give it a nice luxurious feel. The drive itself is also heavier than expected, though not excessively so.
The performance of the drive, as I hinted at earlier, is top-notch for an external drive. When connecting via USB-C 3.2 it fully saturated the interface, I would have no issues with using this for high speed copies or backups in any situation. I believe even XBox OneX/S or PS5s would be fully capable of utilizing this drive as external storage as well, which while not as quick as the internal drives, would be plenty fast from an external perspective. I've included a screenshot of the ATTO Disk Benchmark that shows the immense speed of the drive.
All in all, this is a well made, solid performing external SSD. I heartily recommend it.
Thanks for purchasing the Samsung T7 Shield Portable SSD. I'm glad to see you are happy with the experience.
This drive is designed to transfer massive files in seconds. USB 3.2 Gen 2 and PCIe NVMe achieve soaring sequential read/write speeds of up to 1,050/1,000 MB/s*, allowing you to edit directly from the drive. The high-tech rubber exterior with Dynamic Thermal Guard controls heat to maintain steady performance for even giant projects.

Rugged Storage Option

A few years ago I transitioned to ONLY solid state for long term and speedier storage solutions for all my digital content.
I have several Sandisk Extreme portable SSDs that I have been very happy with and having the option to compare with this product was intriguing to me.
Speeds were similar in transferring larger 4K video files from drones to harddrives via my M1 Macbook pro. I was using USB-C and had no problem with connectivity with my apple products. This harddrive just works and transferred a great deal of data in a very timely manner.
I do like the construction of the Samsung hard drive and feel the durability is in the same realm of the Sandisk options. The Samsung has a coating that sometimes collects some dust and dirt if you throw it in a hiking bag but it cleans up rather quickly.
The value in having a rugged storage solution is beneficial to be able to count on the data being protected regardless of the environment you need it in.
I would absolutely recommend this hard drive for all your storage needs
Thanks for sharing your review of Samsung’s T7 Shield Portable SSD.
This drive is ready for the rough and tumble. Shoot on location and wander the wild while feeling confident your data is securely resistant against water and dust with an IP65 rating. The rugged design and advanced outer elastomer add extra durability to even endure a 9.8 foot drop. It is also designed to be durable and stylish. The stylish rubberized grip prevents slips so it stays in your hands; Bring everything with you and look great doing it.

This is the drive you get when you want zero compromise. It's a perfect mix of pro-level specs in a super rugged package.
Speed
This thing is ridiculously fast. With read speeds up to 1,050 MB/s, I can transfer huge folders of photos or 4K video files in seconds—no more waiting around. It makes working on a project directly from the drive completely seamless.
Durability
And it's built like a tank. The IP65 rating means it's totally protected from dust and water splashes. I don't have to worry if it's in my bag and it starts raining. Plus, the 3-meter drop resistance means it's pretty much indestructible for daily use. This is peace of mind in a compact, portable drive.

The main selling point is that this is supposed to be tough. You can drop it. It can handle a bit of rain and dust. If that appeals to you, then this might be the right portable SSD for you. On the other hand, that durability comes at a price, so if you don't need it, there are other, cheaper solutions out there.
The two end caps appear to be solid aluminum, and the outer surface is coated in soft rubber (presumably there is aluminum under this, but I am not taking mine apart to verify this). This rubber extends past the edges of the end caps, so even if you drop this and it lands on a corner, it should survive. Other than maybe the USB-C port, there is no visible place for water or dust to ingress. But just looking into the port, it appears to be sealed with a red rubber gasket between the port and the end cap.
As to performance, my PC only has 5Gb/s USB ports, so I was able to get nowhere near the advertised maximum. But I still found the performance to be very acceptable. Note that this unit advertised 256-bit hardware encryption, but that must be enabled using the included software. The Windows version is actually an installer! This baffles me. For a portable device that you might want to use on multiple computers, the software should be stand-alone and just run by itself. However, I don’t really see myself using the on-board encryption. If I need encryption, I could easily install the open-source VeraCrypt. That software can make an encrypted partition and run off of the drive itself, (no installation required). VeraSrypt is also available on Linux, something that the Samsung encryption software can’t claim.
So, if you are going on safari and need something reliable to hold your photos, this seems like it might be a great option. Or if you travel a lot and need something to survive bangs in your carry-on luggage, then this would also be a good choice. But, of course, even rugged devices fail, so don’t forget to have another backup!

Samsung makes high quality, high performance storage products and I’ve used their internal SSD drives for several years so I really looked forward to trying a Samsung external SSD. The Samsung T7 Shield 1TB external SSD comes boxed with 2 usb cables and some paperwork. The cables are a usb C to usb C cable and a usb A to usb C cable so you’re covered regardless of your system’s usb configuration.
The drive itself is usb 3.2 interface so this to some extent dictates the performance you’ll get with the T7. More on that in a bit. Spec wise the T7 is capable of sequential read/write speeds of up to 1,050/1,000 MB/s. Inside is a 1gb NVMe. It’s wrapped in a rugged rubbery feeling case designed to provide IP65 protection against water and dust. The case is also rated to protect the drive from nearly a 10 foot drop. Great peace of mind if you like me intend to take this drive on the road for work. The drive size is a perfect portable size measuring .5 inches tall by 2.3 inches wide by 3.47 inches long. The T7 has a grippy rubbery feel and has ridges for greater hold in your hand. While the case design makes for great protection and great grip, the rubbery material is a bit of a dust magnet.
Upon connecting the drive to usb you’re prompted to install the software which allows you to password protect your drive. I was ready to check out the drive performance. The Samsung T7 drive is a usb 3.2 generation 2 drive so I benchmarked the drive using a generation 2 usb C port and I got 1,060 MB/s read and 1,027 MB/s write speeds. I then benchmarked using a generation 2 usb A port and got very similar performance with 1,082 MB/s read and 1,019 MB/s write speeds. These speeds are right in line with the drives specifications and offers impressive performance which is perfect for transferring large files quickly and editing right on the drive. I would point out that you can still use the drive with usb 3.2 generation 1 ports but at a performance hit. Here speeds drop by about half but honestly that’s not horrible if you only have generation 1 ports on your system. The Samsung T7 Shield does not disappoint. Great performance in a rugged package. Highly recommended.
Thanks for purchasing the Samsung T7 Shield Portable SSD. I'm glad to see you are happy with the experience.

Highly recommended for anyone looking for quality and efficiency in a single package!

This Samsung T7 Shield SSD is slightly larger than my older Samsung T5 SSD, and it also has a silicone coating, which I had not expected. The older Samsung SSD’s only have an aluminum case.
This Samsung SSD is also water and dust resistant, which was not a feature of the older Samsung SSD’s.
This Samsung SSD has an external shell that is wavy, which allow air to travel under the SSD when it is sitting on any surface, this allows it to dissipate more heat and stay cooler.
This Samsung SSD comes with two connection cables, one USB-C to USB-C cable, and one USB-C to USB-A cable.
I did a file transfer test, comparing this T7 SSD to a T5 SSD. I used 10 movies totaling around 20 gigabytes, and I transferred these 10 movies to my desktop, and then back to both SSD’s, and surprisingly, this Samsung T7 SSD had almost exactly the same transfer and read speeds as my Samsung T5 SSD. I had these two SSD’s connected using USB-C to USB-A cables, and so I guess this Samsung T7 must be connected using the USB-C to USB-C cable, in order to achieve the max read and write speeds.
This is a very good quality external SSD, and I am rating it at 5 out of 5 stars.

Cons:
1. Price (4/5): While the T7 Shield offers premium features and performance, it may be relatively more expensive than standard external SSDs. However, the added durability and security justify the cost.
2. Fingerprint Magnet (4/5): The glossy surface of the SSD can attract fingerprints and smudges, which may require occasional cleaning to maintain its appearance.
Conclusion:
The Samsung T7 Shield 1TB External USB 3.2 Gen 2 Rugged SSD is the ultimate guardian for your data. Its rugged build, water resistance, and drop protection make it ideal for users who need to safeguard their data in challenging environments or on the go.
The combination of blazing-fast data transfer speeds, compact portability, and top-notch security features, including hardware encryption, sets this external SSD apart from the competition. Whether you're a creative professional, a gamer, or a data-conscious user, the T7 Shield offers the perfect blend of performance and durability.

For those of us that snap 30 pictures of the same thing in hopes that one picture will turn out perfect you know how fast your phone fills up! I was looking for a way to safely pull the photos off and keep them in a safe place and this external drive was a great find! The external drive itself is compact with huge storage. I downloaded about 5000 photos in only about 5 minutes! Very happy with the compatibility and cute design of the drive! Will definitely purchase another when the time comes

This Samsung 1 TB external hard drive is exactly what I was looking for. I have a larger laptop that I carry for travels and I use at home so a smaller external hard drive is essential for my work. I’m able to save thousands of photos hundreds of videos plenty of music and a couple of movies. Again perfect for travel easy to set up literally just a plug-in locate on your computer and start saving. The color is cool but the texture of the hard drive makes for a good grip and small enough to store anywhere. I use it with a Asus laptop which also has Microsoft software.
Other than more storage like a 2 TB or 3 TB there is literally nothing wrong with this device I will probably grab another at some point in time very easy to use and can be formatted for any laptop or a desktop. The charging cord or laptop desktop cord is a little short that is the only thing that I find difficult to use on the system and that it restricts how close the student has to be to your actual computer other than that it’s perfect

This is my second Samsung external SSD. My first also being a 1TB T7 but the non shield version, which I also wrote a separate review on almost 2 years ago. In just about every way the T7 Shield is the same as the regular T7, outside of the obvious exterior casing. Most importantly though, it's still just as great. In fact I still use my original T7 to this day, but I needed more storage, so that's where this new T7 Shield comes in.
My main reason and use for having this external SSD is for storing video footage used on my youtube channel, so this SSD sees a LOT of use with a LOT of reading and writing. As I said initially, I already have one T7 that's doing a great job for me still, but I'm always concerned about the abuse it sometimes takes as it travels quite a bit with me.
This new T7 Shield puts my mind at ease with all the extra protection it has. As much as my original T7 has held up all this time, this one may be near indestructible! It's not a lot of extra cost either over the non-shield so it's definitely worth it when you use it the way I do.
Back to performance though, this SSD easily keeps up with my demands. The typical cycle starts with me transferring footage from my various SD cards to the SSD. In cases where I'm at an event doing a lot of filming I'll clear out my SD cards nightly and then go back into the SSD later on to organize all the files. I then edit my videos on my MacBook using Final Cut Pro, which uses a lot of storage space for each project. Since space on my MacBook is limited, I keep all the source files on this SSD for Final Cut Pro to read from. Once edited I write the final videos to this SSD and then when it comes time to upload to YouTube, my videos again are being uploaded directly from the SSD. Finally once I'm done with a given video I move all the files to another hard drive I keep solely for archiving. Then rinse and repeat all over again for the next video project.
Of all the bottlenecks in transferring data this SSD is never one of them. Whether writing to it, organizing files, reading files, etc., it handles it all easily. I've never had any type of data corruption issues with my first T7 or this new T7 Shield and they've become absolutely essential to me.
I honestly can't say enough good things about the T7 SSD. If you need a storage solution that's durable and can take a lot of use, and abuse, I highly recommend this Samsung T7 SSD.
Thanks for purchasing Samsung's T7 Shield Portable SSD. I am happy to see that this compact drive is meeting your needs. The portable design allows you to access large amounts of data on the move, anytime, anywhere. With no moving parts and a sturdy, shock resistant body, it can handle drops of up to 9.8 feet.

Easy to use and great experience. I take this with me everywhere. You can you it with your phone or computer. Or even your tablet. Has amazing security so your personal downloaded information is secure. Lots of space. Best of all is it can take a fall on the ground without it being damaged. Water resistant as well. I highly recommend this potable memory. 1 TB of space as well. Wow. What a device.

I got this to replace an old HDD and to store my pc games. It works perfectly, It took a few minutes to move 100GB+ of game files from my steam library, and there's no detectable difference when running the games from the drive versus my internal SSD. My old drive used to get really hot and make a lot of noise when I tried running games, but I haven't noticed that with this one at all.
I would recommend this to a friend

I think this is the perfect portable storage solution for my iMac. I use it between the iMac and my iPad to keep my business files that I don’t want stored on the cloud. It’s plenty fast for my needs. It’s also small but a nice weight and feels durable. I don’t worry about it getting bumped around. Setup was very easy. The Samsung software wasn’t necessary for my Apple devices so I simply formatted the drive for Mac and plugged it in.
