Great Interface, Loud player, Skipping Issues

    Posted
    BigCole

Like you, after getting a proper 4K TV setup, I was pretty excited to enter the world of UHD Blu-Ray. Despite doing quite a bit of research on various brands with slightly better reviews, I figured that this player would be an obvious match to my 2016 55' Samsung 4K set. Turns out, I really should have trusted the more critical reviews that tested different players side by side. While this has an exceptional user interface that looks great and is easy to navigate, the cold hard fact of that matter is that Samsung Smart TV's have a nearly identical, not to mention faster, interface for their built-in streaming-service apps. So, for me, it was all about how it handled UHD discs. The first thing you'll notice is that this player loud as heck during most menu-screens and towards the end of features. It was like a flashback to those early set-top DVD players from back in the day, where you can hear the motor absolutely shaking the entire unit as spins the disc, change layers, or navigate to different chapters. I've read that this issue might only affect models made by a certain manufacturing date, but really, come on, tracking down that info for something you're are buying from Best Buy is probably not in the cards, nor something most people would think about. I have to admit, despite having the also-loud PS4 Pro as part of our setup, the noise was distracting and disheartening, especially during quiet moments of movies. On top of this issue, the player struggled with the three 2017 UHD discs I tested, even after I ensured that the firmware was up to date. For Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, there would be intermittent audio-drop outs throughout the film, about 6 in total, where all audio would just stop for a second or two. Many gags were ruined. Close Encounters of the Third kind had similar issues, but nothing broke my heart quite like the brand new E.T. Anniversary Edition UHD disc. The player couldn't make it past the 12-minute mark no matter what I tried. It would start with artifacts, then the frame-rate would slow down and ramp up, then it would start skipping before totally freezing. Thinking I might be pushing the player too hard, I reset all settings to default, enabled and disabled settings, and just about tried everything including getting a brand new HDMI cable. Nothing worked. I returned the player and exchanged it for the Sony UBX-800 and couldn't be happier. The interface isn't as slick, but its faster, quieter, and played all three discs brilliantly without any hiccups. I know you are excited to get into this world and I know we all love Samsung, but I'm telling you, do NOT get this if you want a pain-free trip in the world of UHD Blu-Ray.

this blu-ray player is very easy to set up and use right out of the box, it's exactly like every other blu-ray player in this regard, but there are a few things you need to know before you buy. you may need need a new HDMI cable for this blu-ray player to carry your 4k and/or HDR signal, but probably not. for the record, there is no such thing as an HDMI 1.0 or 2.0 or 2.1 cable, only the connections have version numbers. You basically have high speed or standard speed HDMI with or without ethernet. So chances are your regular old cable will work just fine, don't let them upsell you on some overpriced cable that will do the same thing as the 3 dollar cable. If you need a new one get the cheapest one you can. anyway, performance of this unit seems good. It displays 4k HDR content on my television flawlessly. Keep in mind that this is a samsung product and they have produced their own HDR standards (HDR10 and HDR10+) so I'm guessing that this won't display Dolby Vision HDR though I cannot find any documentation that confirms this. discs load faster than they did on my old samsung blu-ray player even with java heavy interfaces which is nice. I don't particularly like the interface though. Powering on the unit presents you with a square in the center of your screen, if there is a disc in the tray clicking on this will play it otherwise it'll take you into the settings for the blu-ray player itself. It's a little bit of oversimplification that looks quite nice, but just feels ... I don't know. Weird or something. The remote itself is quite simply designed as well, which I love. i don't need a number pad and dedicated buttons for multiple streaming services. I wish more manufacturers would take note and mimic sammy on this. regular 1080p blu-rays look good on here as well, the scaler that upconverts the image to 4k seems like it's doing a decent job. it's hard to tell really since a 1080p blu-ray source is already very high fidelity. I can't comment on regular dvds because I can't watch them anymore, they make my eyes barf. The build quality feels a little bit cheap on this unit, the disc tray in particular feels flimsy. If you have children or pets that are prone to technology mishaps maybe consider going with something else or placing this somewhere they'll find hard to reach. I'm not in love with the way this player looks either. I prefer a standard matte black industrial design without curves or other embellishments, but this is mostly hidden on a shelf anyway. One last thing, every disc I've played on this has worked flawlessly except for one. The Spider-Man Homecoming 4k Blu-Ray plays just fine, but there's a horizontal bar on the bottom of the screen that I can't get rid of. As far as I can tell it's not a tv problem, but has something to do with the way the disc and player are interacting. I've tested a dozen or so other discs and can't replicate this problem, nor can I find anyone else online who has experienced this. Figured I'd mention it here. And for the record, the Westworld Season 1 4k set is the best thing I've ever seen with my eyeballs. The image is absolutely stunning. So final thoughts? I'd buy this again, I'd recommend it to just about anybody, and considering that the only difference between this model and the step up version that costs twice as much from samsung is the absence of a second HDMI port. Get this one. It's good.

Too Expensive + Too Much Headache

    Posted
    mrvvolpe

So you buy an expensive Blu-Ray, install and it is all good. Then when you actually decide to watch a movie you find out your remote control is not working. Then you go online just to find out is a COMMON complaint!!!! And, to make matters even worse, NO REPLY from Samsung, just a bunch of customer exchanging information on little tricks you can try to make it work...Then you publish a post asking for an actual Samsung reply, and what you get back? NOTHING.... So, the Blu-Ray is still useless than you try to contact them, and find out you need support to fill out a form requesting support!!!! After 4 hours chatting with Customer Support you put in a request for service just to find out that your headache is just starting. Now you have to wait for them to contact you - of course they did ONCE at 7 am on a Saturday morning, and that was it. Then you have to try calling them since for Samsung case closed! After a customer service tell you they are going to send you a label by email for you to send the unit back for service!?!?! Wait a minute...it is brand new, but besides the fact that you will not have a unit for a X period of time, now you need to print a label, go to a UPS store, get a box, pack and send it. I did not sign up for that, it is brand new, they should be very apologetic, and send another unit to swap, or AT LEAST the box with a label and everything, after all, you bought a BRAND NEW product and now won't have for who knows how long. Well, that was not enough, the customer service hang up on me. So I called again and asked for a supervisor to have my case escalated because now I want my money back, and nothing to do with Samsung at all anymore. 40 minutes waiting while the Customer Service Supervisor that really understood how frustrating it was trying to transfer me to customer relations. Guess what, I got again a non-customer service skills attendant that told me I could download the manual from a computer to see how to place the unit in a box...I think he just called me stupid...I then asked him to read the case, and now it was not even a matter of case no case, I just want to return the unit and my money back. He then said that I have to deal with the store, but the store has a 30 days return policy...according to him, Samsung stand buy their products bought from Samsung store...So, be aware that any other store that sells Samsung, the manufacturer has NOTHING to do with it!!!! Amazing, now I ask, is 12 months warranty, right?! So, it is not working for less than 2 months, how do we handle that?!?!? DO NOT BUY, RUN, RUN FAR AWAY from this product, if you do not want to spend a lot of money in something that won't work but give you a lot of headaches instead.

    Basic 4K UHD Blu-ray Player

As I was hooking up to a LG 4K UHD LED TV, I had to manually set the HDMI input on the TV to accept a 4K signal. I found the remote control design to be too streamlined for my tastes. It took a while for me to figure out what the user manual intended in order to program the remote to operate the LG TV. It would have helped if Samsung had superimposed the numerical button layout over an outline image of the remote control. As there is no dedicated subtitle button, if you do not select that option on the 4K or Blu-ray disc before hitting play, you have to open a drop down menu to make the selection. If you rewind or go forward, a banner persists across the top of the screen for longer than necessary. As I have now lived with the player for a month now, I have found 4K images to be less contrasty compared to Blu-ray. I don't know whether to attribute this to the digital transfer process for the two types of discs or the greater range of 4K, but it seems that everything is lurking in shadows for dimly-lit scenes. I would be hard pressed to say whether I was watching a 4K or Blu-ray disc on the Samsung or a Blu-ray on a ordinary Blu-ray player. Again, is this a result of the digital transfer or the up-scaling performed by my LG TV itself? The M8500 unit was able to resolve playback issues that I was having with my "Manchester by the Sea" Blu-ray on my older Sony unit which was exhibiting flickering (end of Chapter 8 and beginning of Chapter 9) and background noise (Chapter 12). It appears that the increased resolution on 4K discs has left little room for extra features hence the inclusion of a Blu-ray disc. For viewing still gallery features on the Blu-ray, the M8500 remote does not provide a true next or previous button which makes maneuvering around rather clumsy. It seems I'm better off just using my older Blu-ray player when viewing these special features. I've encountered occasional glitches when I've gone backwards a few seconds during playback to replay a scene where the Samsung seems to hang up when I hit play again, but it seems to resolve itself if I go backwards a little further. I don't know whether this is the type of glitchy performance encountered by reviewers of the previous generation of Samsung 4K players.

    An Excellent 4K Blu-ray Device

Instead of becoming wordy and losing your interest, I am going to place emphasis on the pros and the cons of this particular unit. PROS: Interface: Identical to Samsung's TV line, and very User Friendly. Play-ability: The model plays all my CD's, DVDs, Blu Rays, and naturally 4K Blu Ray discs. It even plays media burned onto CD, DVD, & Blu ray disc via a computer. That was a plus for me. I have not experience any issues with playing files off of a thumb drive and or a external hard drive. I was impressed with all the file extensions this player recognizes. Internet Connectivity: Basically, I use a wired connection for all my streaming devices. However, I needed to order a Ethernet cable. So until it arrives, I had to use wireless. To my surprise, this unit recognizes 5GHz, as well as the traditional 2GHz networks. My only question is, why doesn't Samsung provide this feature in their 8000 TV line? Streaming: No issues here. I have 100Mbps for my internet speed. Picture Quality: Excellent! Colors are vibrant. and images are clear. On rare occasions, I may experience a slight judder, but that could be do to a fluctuation in internet speed, the difference in refresh rate between TV and Blu Ray player. CONS: My only concern, and I do mean only, I hear a hum coming from the unit when there is no disc in the tray. This may be normal, but I thought I'd throw it out there for Samsung's input (hint, hint). {: -) Overall, I am satisfied with this purchase. And yes, I would suggest this player to my friends.

Very good Samsung product. When watching 4K Blu-ray's, the picture does skip a little from time-to-time. Not sure if the processor is a little under powered, a little low on the internal memory, or if the device could simply use a quick firmware patch. Either way, it's not overly noticeable but definitely there. When playing standard Blu-ray discs, however, there is no skipping and is where this player excels, in my opinion. 4K up-scaling is tremendous, and disc load speeds remind me of the super fast DVD player days (finally!). My last 7th-gen Samsung Blu-ray player took around 15-20 seconds minimum to load my movies to the main menu; the M8500 does it in around 5 seconds or less (4K Blu-rays load to main menu in around 7 seconds). 4K picture, while awesome, isn't going to have the "wow" factor many people saw when upgrading from DVD to Blu-ray. I can definitely see a color control difference when turning on HDR, but the overall quality isn't a massive jump from standard Blu-ray, even on my 65" Samsung MU8000 4K/HDR QLED panel. Just throwing this out there to curb expectations a little. Marked down to 4 stars due to the skipping, and potential hardware short comings, on 4K HDR Blu-rays (would only take half a star if I could). Regular Blu-rays still work really well so most of my movie purchases are standard Blu-ray, at least until 4K Blu-ray prices start coming down a little more.

Works well playing 4K discs and also up-converting blu ray movies. Good features for the money. Can control the player with my Sony TV remote. Kinda miss a front display, but you can easily bring up disc info pressing pause on the remote. Remote is VERY basic. When setting the TV control buttons on the remote to control a non Samsung TV, I found the instructions in the manual very confusing. The manual shows the numbers 1-0 in the illustration, but what you can't see is the button text under the number. Additionally the example does not specify the button name for the numbers. I was bringing up the numbers using the 123 button and that just did not work. To help anyone else that is having a problem, this is the correct way to do it. Using Remote Control Buttons to Enter TV Codes: 1. Press and hold the (TV Power) button. 2. While holding the (TV Power) button, press the buttons on the remote that correspond to a two-digit TV Code from TV list. Use the key below as a guide for the numbers. 123 button = 1 DISC MENU button = 2 POP UP button = 3 UP = 4 LEFT = 5 RIGHT = 6 DOWN = 7 RETURN = 8 HOME = 9 TOOLS = 0 For example: To enter code 01, while holding down the TV power button, press the TOOLS button for 0 and then press the 123 button for 1. I did call Samsung support, and they were very helpful.

I had high hopes for this Samsung player. The set up was quick and easy, everything was up and running, including the streaming apps. The 5.1 surround was perfect. The only negative on the sound was a pop or click would come out of various speakers when changing chapters on a bluray or going into menus, and after each segment or preview before the movie started. The clicking was annoying so I called Samsung help and the rep said it was normal on all the new line of players. OK, I can live with that annoyance. Then I put in a Disney movie, Nightmare before Christmas, listened to the clicks and pops after each of the many, many previews and after the final preview, when the main menu should have displayed, the screen went completely blank and black. I tried several more times but the movie would not play. I have played this bluray many times on my PS3 with no problem. I packed it up and returned to Best Buy tonight for a refund. The clerk was very polite and the store’s refund policy is very accommodating. Why is it so hard to make something that works correctly? It is a mystery.

Hooked this up to my Samsung 4k UHD TV using high speed HDMI cable as suggested. After I finally got the tray to open, I loaded my DVD and hit play. The quality was terrible! Blurry and small picture. I thought maybe I had to change a setting or something so I called Samsung support. I was told that since my DVD I tried to play was from 2006 it would not work in this DVD player?? Not what I read with upscale capabilities. So I proceeded to go to their online support where I waited forever to get connected to an agent. After performing all the tests it was determined that the player was broke. I could have told him that from the start. I was never able to get the tray back open and get my disc out. Alot of time wasted on this thing. I know have to send to Samsung for service. Talk about an inconvenience! I have lost all faith in Samsung and their support team is worthless. I want to return this and get my money back so I could buy a player that actually works by a brand that supports the customer. All around terrible product.

I was already using a UBD-M8500 in the bedroom of my house on an LG 4k TV and it worked great. I wanted a second UBD-M8500 to use in the living room on a Samsung 4k TV, so I bought another one at BB. The UBD-M8500 does a very good job playing 4k HDR disks, regular blu ray disks, and dvd disks. The upscaling of regular blu ray disks and DVDs to near 4k quality is excellent. Samsung has an excellent app store, where you can find the major apps to install such as: Netflix, Vudu, Fandango Now, Roku Channel, Google Play Movies, Amazon Video, Crackle, Youtube, Accuweather, Pandora Radio, Amazon Music, and many more. The blu ray player is DLNA certified, so you can play mp3 music and mp4 video files from a device such as WD MyCloud or even a usb thumb drive. The Wifi works great. The blu ray player also has a built in web browser too.

This 4K Blu-Ray player is quite good. The picture quality is great when watching 4K Blu-Rays but also when using the Smart Functions on the Blu-Ray Player. The operating system on this device is very smooth and works great. One small complaint is that the web browser is almost un-usable because of how touchy the on screen cursor is. The big complaint that gave this 4 stars instead of 5 is that there is only a very small selection of apps installed on this Blu-Ray player and you can only download a select few more. You get Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Video, Youtube, Google Play Movies, and the Web Browser. You can download a few more such as Vudu, Spotify, UFC, iHeartRadio,YuppTV, Pandora, and Fandago Now. This would be a perfect Blu-Ray Player if it had a better selection of apps. Still great for disks though.

I received this product as a gift for Christmas 2018 (Yes- today). After opening the player I found install simple and painless, and naturally I tested my first movie. I found the picture quality to be exceptional, but I also immediately noticed the "loundess" MANY other reviewers noted. Halfway through our first movie the player began to skip and then literally quit working and froze. ZERO of the typical IT "turn it off/turn it on" remedies worked, and the power LED light flashed alternating between red and green lights. Nothing we did ever resulted in the player functioning again and internet research revealed that this is EXTREMELY common. In the last two years I've had issues with a Samsung washer, sound bar, and now this blu-ray. While I have been a fierce advocate for Samsung of the years, I'm learning the hardway that their products seriously are garbage. Led the buyer beware- You've been warmed.

    4k player keeps freezing

This unit does have good picture and sound, but has frozen on its playing of (3) new 4K discs: Kong Skull Island, The Legend of Tarzan and Wonder Woman. When it froze on the 1st 4k disc (Kong), it kept freezing in the same place multiple times. I took the disc back to Best Buy to have them play it on the same Samsung 4k player at their store. The Kong 4k disc froze in exactly the same place on their Samsung 4k machine. I exchanged the 4k disc for another Kong 4k disc thinking it was the disc. When my Samsung 4k player froze on a new Wonder Woman 4k disc, it was just as she was to make her appearance as Wonder Woman for the 1st time. When it un-froze, it had jumped ahead to where the battle for the town had just ended. Again, I took the disc back to Best Buy to exchange it for the same movie. When the 4k player froze on the 4K Tarzan disc, I got fed up and bought a Sony 4k player. After installing the new Sony 4k player at home, it played all three 4k discs without error.

I am so disappointed in this player. I thought all Blu Ray players remembered where to resume playback of a disc if the disc is stopped for some reason. My LG Blu Ray player always remembered where to resume a disc, even after the disc was removed and put back in. Samsung support just confirmed for me that the Samsung UBD-M8500 does not remember where it was. It's really painful to have to go to the disc menu, then scenes, and then forward and backward to where a disc was playing when it was stopped. I should have bought the LG when I upgraded to Ultra HD. Really dislike this thing, a lot. Plus, the remote is really sensitive and sometimes gets stuck and the dang thing goes crazy. Samsung has already replaced the first remote.

Let me start off with a few things I don't like about this player: It's a bit noisey, BUT it seems to only be that way when the movie isn't playing, so that's good. I also expect a bit of noise since the format is new, and I can only assume later models will get quieter and better at that. Another thing though, the player shuts off without warning sometimes. I think that's due to overheating, so I just cleared some space around it and that seemed to fix it, so that's good too and again can only expect the technology/models to get better as time goes on. Other than that, it does it's job and made me very happy to eliminate one controller from the coffee table, as I have a 2017 Samsung 9000 and the remote is universal in that aspect. I would recommend this for price, if you're okay without the extra bells and whistles from the step up model. I'd also recommend waiting if you're still on the fence with the format, because like I've said, next year's model should only be better.

The sales staff at Best Buy assured us that this particular player would be perfect and they were absolutely right. The picture quality is outstanding, the ease of operation is second to none and the price was right. We have this player programmed into our Harmony remote so whenever we use it it’s as simple as pressing one button installing a disc and watching a video. The only thing that we use the provided remote for is changing settings on the player. We are very pleased with the quality of the player and the clarity of the picture it provides.

This player worked fine until off warranty. Now the screen goes black for 2-3 seconds while streaming. It skips and locks up on 4K movie discs. ...even brand new ones. Called Samsung and they had me do a reset to factory...did not solve anything. Then told me I would have to send it in to be checked by them to see if it is faulty and then I would have to pay for the repairs. I have done nothing to this player. Regular DVDs and BluRays work fine, it just does not work with 4K discs...the reason I bought it in the first place. So, I had to buy a new Sony 4K player and it works fine. Shame on Samsung.

I bought this as an upgrade to my UBD-K8500 4K player. A few differences between the two: no indicator on the front to show the power is on, no display on the front to show the movie running time, not 3D capable out of the box (I put in a 3D movie and the player showed a message saying I needed a firmware upgrade), and the menu display when pausing a movie is brighter and stays on the screen longer than usual; I'll have to see if that setting can be adjusted. The old remote works with the new player and vice versa; I also did not have to reconfigure any settings in my Logitech Harmony remote to accommodate the new player model, as it uses the previous Samsung player configuration. The picture is crisp and vivid. And I did get the player on sale for 33% off, which was a definite plus.

When I purchased a Samsung QLED 4K TV I knew I needed the accessories to get the most out of the TV's quality. I purchased a Samsung Atmos sound bar to get add to the experience. The trick with a 4K TV is needing 4K material, so a 4K Blu-Ray player made sense. To take advantage of Atmos you need an external device to connect via your sound bar. The UBD-M8500 provided the best of both at a good price. It supports Atmos, so UHD Atmos Blu-Rays look and sound awesome. If you want to stream a 4k UHD Atmos from Vudu, this player is perfect. I am picky and this made me happy!

Pros: • 4K (HDR10) movies looked great • Interface is clean and user friendly • Tons of apps Cons: • 1080p Blu-Ray upscaling is horrible. My PS4 Pro does an outstanding job upscaling to 4K. • No Dolby Vision. If I would’ve known that Samsung didn’t future proof this player I would’ve never bought it. My suggestion is to just wait for an affordable 4K Blu-Ray player that has outstanding upscaling and that offers both HDR standards. HDR10 and the absolute best Dolby Vision.
