BEWARE: Samsung Has an Appliance Problem

DO NOT buy the DA29-00019A or DA29-00020B Samsung water filter cartridge for your refrigerator unless you bring in your current water filter cartridge and compare the head (top) of your current filter to the filter in the store. If they match, no problem. If they do not match, then you have my problem. Apparently, Samsung changed its “certified” filters sold by Best Buy. The new DA29-00020B filters will NOT fit the older refrigerators. I contacted Samsung corporate and they told me to purchase a “certified” Samsung water filter. I did. At Best Buy. According to the Samsung web site, my refrigerator, a 2011 model (RS267TDBP), requires a DA29-00019A filter, now replaced by the DA29-00020B filter, which is all Best Buy sells for Samsung side-by-side models where the filter is located in the interior lower right hand of the unit. Apparently, Samsung changed it filter heads for newer models and no longer supports older model filters. I wrote to Samsung corporate HQ to no avail. Now I am stuck with a refrigerator with no way to replace the water filter. I’m NOT happy.

I just bought my new fridge a few months ago and was changing the water filter for the first time. I noticed 2 things.... When I put the new filter in it squealed loudly when dispensing water. I took it out and put it back in about 5 times because the squealing would change in pitch and frequency each time. The last time it was still squealing but not as bad. After using the water in the door for about 2 weeks the squeal stopped and has not done it since. However, I swear that the water does not flow as fast as it did with the original filter that came with the unit (same model number of course). I know the water came out much faster before. Sometimes it drives me crazy because I am not patient enough for the water to come out at that pace. There is nothing I can do about either issue. As far as purchasing one goes... They are very hard to find. I called several stores (that were not Best Buy) and everyone was out of stock. They tell me they are hard to keep in stock. Luckily, Best Buy had one, but Best Buy price is about $6 higher than a large chain hardware/do-it-yourself store, but Best Buy had one and I needed it at any price. NOTE: With the new Samsung fridge the water and ice started tasting absolutely horrible a couple of days before the icon changed red indicating a change was needed, so I would recommend having one on hand just as soon as the icon begins to change colors because you may have to change it immediately. (We had to buy ice for a couple of days when I was trying to locate a filter).

If you have a Samsung and you see the small red indicator light up, it does not, unfortunately, mean that your fridge is now capable of dispensing waffles. Sorry. it means the filter needs to be replaced. There really is only one choice for these filters at best Buy - and typically elsewhere. It's sort of like buying ink cartridges for your printer - sure you can by less expensive off brand replacements but you are also subjected to wording about the dangerous of using off brands, leakage, different filtering materials used, even dangers. The device itself is simple enough to replace, you don't have to turn off the water supply to the fridge, just turn, remove, and replace with the new one. Sometimes the removed filter will leak as you remove it, that's normal. If the old filter has difficulty coming out, just make sure you are pushing and turning the correct direction - like opening a child-proof cap. Expect this to happen about every 6 months, typically sooner if you also use a lot of ice, or have teens that drink a lot of water.

Genuine filter from Samsung is worth the extra $

Sure, I wish these OEM filters from Samsung cost a little less. But they work as advertised, and I trust them. The one non-OEM filter I tried (ReplacementBrand Samsung DA29-00020B Comparable Refrigerator Water Filter) would not even fit into the nozzle of the Samsung refrigerator correctly, and I had to throw it out. One other thing - multiple reviews of third party filters will mention how they love that the "water flow is so much better than with the Samsung filter." To my mind that means either (1) they are comparing a brand new third party filter to a used Samsung filter, OR (2) the third party filter is doing a substandard job of filtering the water. I would also note that the Samsung OEM filter is NSF 53 certified, while none of the third party filters I've looked at have this certification (most have no certification at all, and one I found was "independently certified at NSF 42" but has no NSF emblem on it). In this case I believe that a genuine filter from Samsung is worth the extra cost.

The Bose SoundTouch 10 speaker bundle includes 2 SoundTouch 10 speakers at a special bundle price. This is my second purchase of a Bose SoundTouch product. I was extremely pleased with my initial purchase and so far the SoundTouch 10 bundle is living up to my high expectations of Bose products. The speakers work flawlessly and are easy to control using the free SoundTouch App on my smartphone, iPad and desktop computer. I can play the same program in multiple rooms now that I have these additional speakers. The only downside I have identified so far is the lack of detailed online support to help with the installation process. Some tutorial videos would certainly be helpful. But eventually, I figured everything out on my own. This was a holiday purchase and the Bose customer support phone line had been very busy every time I have tried to call them for additional help. For example, here is supposed to be a way to use both speakers in the same room to achieve true stereo sound separation (left channel plus right channel) However, I have not yet been able to figure how to make this variation work . Otherwise, overall, I am very pleased with this purchase and I would certainly recommend this pair of SoundTouch 10 speakers to a friend.

OK, so I'm not sure there's much to say about a filter for your Samsung refrigerator. You should replace them regularly, if you want clean, filtered water. The reason I'm writing this is that I had read how one really needs to turn the water off before taking out the old and in with the new. That means either pulling the refrigerator from the wall, getting behind it and turning the water off there OR shutting down water to the entire house. Sorry, neither option appeals. So I decided to just try replacing the filter without turning the water off. And it couldn't have been simpler or worked better. No pressure issues. No spraying or dripping water. Just replace it, and then do make sure you run a couple gallons of water through to get rid of any impurities and air in the system. Easy Peasy!

The Filter in question is NOT the same as the OEM filter that comes standard in the Samsung refrigerators! The OEM version has a pilot hole of approximately 1/8" in diameter. In the "replacement" (well, not really), the same hole is less than 1/16" in diameter. The interior configuration where the filter is 'supposed' to mate correctly with the refrigerator is different. That being said, the replacement filter damaged the refrigerator housing, which had to be replaced by a Service Tech from Samsung. Had my refrigerator not still been under warranty, this "simple" filter change would have cost me over $400.00 for the part and service fee. Samsung Parts Line told me I should be buying filters directly from them, as the ones being sold at Retail outlets weren't the same. (NOTE TO BEST BUY: You MIGHT want to check your supply chain to visually check the deformities mentioned here...) I can't wait until my next filter change...

      Dear NotAmused,

I'm sorry to hear about your experience. It's worth noting that there are occasional changes in the design of official Samsung filters, which are available at Best Buy in addition to through Samsung. However, it is important to purchase only official replacement cartridges, as you've noted.

Buying genuine Samsung filters at Best Buy is my go-to strategy now. I've been burned so much over the past few years buying filters from the smile-on-the-box folks and receiving counterfeit products. Best Buy's price is in line with all the other dealers, and you get the added bonus of taking the filter home that day and knowing its a genuine part. Samsung, for their part, has started adding a security feature to the filters. There is a sticker on the side of the filter and a magnet in the box. You peel the sticker off the filter and place it over the magnet to reveal green stripes. This verifies the filter is a genuine OEM part. I'll be back for filters every 6 months Best Buy!

I bought two of these filters - one to install now and one for a spare. I put one in (it takes about 5 seconds to insert it and give it a half twist to the right to install it, and then I followed the instructions of running about a gallon of water through it. You really do need to run this amount of water through it so get all of the air out of it so you get a smooth stream of filered water coming out. I then reset the change filter light - you have to do this manually but all it takes is pressing and holding for 5 seconds (not the 3 seconds they tell you) the child lock/filter reset spot on the bottom left corner of the touch control screen just above the water/ice dispenser. It works great now - tasty filtered water and flavorless crushed ice from my fancy refrigerator any time I want it.

When this filter is fresh, it works and tastes great. There are a few cons, none of which can be resolved by the end-user; • The filter should last 9-12 months. I have another fridge of a different brand, and its filter is smaller, and works for almost a year before replacement is needed. • It should be easier to change. To avoid having to fight the water pressure from the wall valve, you have to pull the fridge out, turn the water off at the wall, replace the filter, (vacuum behind and under fridge, optionally), turn the water back on, push the fridge back. I have another fridge of a different brand, and its filter is changed by opening the fridge door, remove a cover, and replace. I would "recommend this to a friend," only because its the only choice there is when it comes to this fridge. As far as I know, that is.

Apparently the good thing about Samsung refrigerators is that you only need to know if it's a long, skinny water filter or not. Apparently there are only two kinds. When I bought this in the store, I was holding my phone with a picture of the water filter on Amazon to show the Best Buy worker, and he saw it and took me to the same filter in the store. And he also said, are you doing a price match? And checked me out with the cheaper online price, quick and easy. Very observant and efficient employee they have there. And the water filter itself is easy to install, located at the front of the refrigerator so you don't need to take all kinds of stuff out of your refrigerator in order to install it, like some other refrigerator brands.

Our Samsung refrigerator requires the replacement of water filters, and though it is a bit of a hassle, it's a necessary one if we want great tasting water. We've tried a few times going without when the indicator light signals that we are getting closer to the point of replacement for the filter, and yes you don't really notice the difference for the first month you skip switching out the filter, but consecutive months are quite noticeable as the water does taste ordinary. Although on the expensive side, they are indeed needed if clean, untainted water is something you wish to enjoy. They do a great job of filtering water, but they need replacement annually. It certainly adds up, but if clean, refreshing water is something you're interested in, then it's a must for Samsung fridges, work great, but expensive.

This is my first replacement filter since purchasing my new Samsung fridge from Best Buy 6 months ago. The water was so smooth and great tasting. Yum!The need replacement indicator lit up and I honestly noticed the differance in water quality. I know there are cheaper knock off filters out there. But I read they are not as good, some leak and only have one ring at base! Plus it will mess up your warranty if you use generic brands.Duh! I won't even try them! Samsung costs a bit more, true, wish it didn't. But I'm Worth It ! Water is Life ..don't be a cheapscape with your life!

We must go through water quickly with our family of 8, so the filter didn’t seem to last long enough to me. While it was new, the water tasted fine. Once it wears out, I can taste our yucky city water again. These filters cost too much to me to have to purchase as often as I’m afraid we’ll need to. I might just have to invest in a Britta jug and maybe the filter will seem to last a little longer. I would still recommend the filter to people. It just doesn’t work well enough for my large family who all can’t stand the taste of our city water, so all like to use fresh filter water for our drinks and ice trays.

Sure, I could have bought the less expensive water filters, but they didn't meet all the filtering needs. For me, more is better and it's worth paying the difference. This model is rated NSF/ANSI 42 and "establishes the minimum requirements for non-health-related contaminants (chlorine, taste, odor and particulates) that may be present in public or private drinking water." It's also NSF/ANSI 53 which "establishes the minimum requirements for the certification of POU/POE filtration systems designed to reduce specific health-related contaminants, such as Cryptosporidium, Giardia, lead, volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) and MTBE (methyl tertiary-butyl ether), that may be present in public or private drinking water."

It was time to replace the water filter for my Samsung refrigerator(according to the panel display) and I had a choice to either use the manufacture's one or a generic one. I chose the manufacture's one this time,a little more expensive than the other, but probably next time I will try the generic. My reasoning was that the refrigerator was fairly new and I wanted to use the suggested filter for the sake of maintaining the warranty but I suspect the other would work as well,as I have been told by friends who have a similar type of appliance that's what they use without any problems.

Pretty easy, the filter fits and it works. Just make sure you buy the correct filter (there are three different styles). Replacement is way easier than the instructions make it out to be - no need to turn off the water at all. The hard part, you really have to twist the heck out of the filter to remove it, more like a half turn than a quarter. Biggest pain is running 5 gallons of water through the new filter. This is a super simple carbon filter, so it filters odors and bad flavors. It does nothing for metals or other hazardous compounds.

I have used this filter before and it works great. However, they are a little bit pricey. Due to the price of the name brand, I tried buying a replacement filter from a large, chain store and use their "store branded" filter, in order to save money. The package said it fit my Samsung model, but when I tried it, it leaked water and I was afraid it would damage the connection to my refrigerator. I took it back and went back to this model of filter. This Samsung branded filter fits like a glove and the water tastes great. We are on a well, so the filter really makes a difference. For two adults, on a well water system, we get about 6 months use out of one filter. I would recommend this product, even at this price point.

The filter does what it is suppose to do, it gives you fresh tasting water. It is easy to change the filter and it lasts six months as advertised. What is not so great is having to run water through the dispenser for 6 minutes (3 gallons) to purge the system after changing the filter. The dispenser space is not big enough to fit a huge pot to hold that much water so I have to use a smaller one and keep dumping it when it's full until I have purged it for the recommended time. At first I also thought $50 was kind of pricey for a filter but since it lasts six months I only need to change it twice a year. The cost of buying two filters for the year is still cheaper than me buying cases of bottle water for the year.

I agree with other reviewers: What can you say about a water filter... it either works or it doesn't. Mine did. But then, I already have great-tasting water without it. The filter can't do anything to affect the water we drink from the tap or use to cook with. However, I read somewhere that the filter aids in keeping the water system in the fridge running smoothly, so I buy it. No complaints except for the exorbitant price, which is another way for Samsung and other appliance makers to keep making money from an already paid-for purchase. I recommend this product to a friend only because refrigerator manufacturers obligate owners to use them.
