Getting photos off an iPhone and onto a desktop computer used to be fairly simple before everything was connected with wifi and Bluetooth. Connect a cord between the phone and device, then select and drop. Sometimes it was mildly inconvenient because you could only drop one at a time, but the process was simple. Now the process has become wildly complicated. You can move pics to the cloud, if you want someone else to be manager of your photos, and you want to pay monthly for storage. For the privacy and/or budget minded, you can move them to an external hard drive via and app, but it’s one more app to download on your phone, and you have to have the right login, because if you don’t, your access is sunk. Not to mention, the up front cost of an external hard drive with ample storage usually isn’t cheap. As someone who had maxed out my photo capacity right before my kiddo’s graduation, and who didn’t want to upload photos to a cloud I’d have to pay for monthly, I spent an entire afternoon when I needed to be doing other stuff, and tried all of the above things. I tried connecting my iPhone 12 to my husband’s Mac - crap! Wrong Apple ID. I tried connecting it to an old laptop. It kinda worked, but the laptop was so old it was wicked slow. I tried downloading the app and connecting it wirelessly to our external hard drive. My husband couldn’t remember the password he set up. Skunked again. So I researched buying my own external hard drive so I’d have my own place to keep my own data. I especially looked for something I could connect directly to my iPhone with a cord instead of an app. Most external solutions were pricey, and I only found one hard drive that said it could be plugged directly into an iPhone, independent of a computer. It was on the low end of pricey, but it only had about a dozen reviews and they felt sketchy. Not a gamble I was willing to take. WHY was this so CoMpLiCaTeD?? Then I came across this little SanDisk photo stick. Other than still having to download an app to use it, the price was reasonable, it took two seconds to plug it into my iPhone, the controls were pretty straightforward, and my life was back to quick and simple. Game changer. No more feeling overwhelming tech angst. Totally worth the money. And so portable that I can quickly move photos while riding somewhere in the car or sitting down to watch TV. And this thing has a TON of storage on it. Which is good because I have close to 1500 photos after 2 years of phone use. A lot to move. But I do it in small bites of 100-150 photos, which probably takes me about 5-10 min each session. The only small drawbacks: I wish it let you choose your photos oldest to newest, instead of the other way around. That means I have to scroll all the way to the end of 1000+ photos each time, and then start selecting. If there’s a setting to change that, I haven’t found it. But let’s face it: we’re most likely to show folks our photos from the last couple of weeks, not 2 years ago. It’s the old ones we’re most likely to want to store. It’s small, so it’s easy to set down somewhere and misplace. I’ve done it several times. I was also concerned I’d leave it in a pocket and launder it. I’ve done that to a tiny cell phone before. Ouch! So, I solved both of these challenges by putting this on a lanyard. The other connector on the adapter isn’t a standard USB, so I couldn’t connect it directly to the photo printing hardware at the store when I wanted to print photos. I also can’t plug it directly into a computer’s USB to move photos off the stick. I think a standard USB would be a much better option. Now I’ll have to see if an adapter is available. That stinks. The warranty is short for the kind of item that usually works for years. I’ve never had a memory stick go bad on me. Why is the warranty only a year or two? Is this built for failure and/or obsolescence? Probably. Will I have to find another avenue to store my photos in a few years? Sigh. Probably. But I just bought myself some time. And it was comparatively cheap and worth the money to get things done now, when I needed it asap. Maybe by then a trusted brand will decide to make a hard drive with an option to run it directly from your phone. A girl can hope.

I can imagine there are more than just a handful of people who wish they would have backed up some of their information in an alternate place for safekeeping. I wish I would have had this before for that very reason. The housing for this drive is metal and made to be super durable. It even has a distinct click when you turn it around so it can stay in place better and to add protection to the exposed end. There is also slot large enough for you to fit this on a keychain if you like. It does come with one plastic cover to cover either tip that would be exposed based on its orientation. I kind of wish there was two, but I can understand most people would lose the other when using it. As with anything these days, there is an app for this too. Once downloaded the transfer process is very easy. After the initial media check and permission settings are sorted out, you can start moving photos, music, contact information, individually between the flash drive and your device. You also have the option to backup and restore your entire photo library (provided sufficient space is available) and/or you contacts/calendars. Read/write speed tests can out at about 90MB/s and on the high end of 42 MB/s respectively. Not super speedy but it’s not a deal breaker either. And it won’t take my recommendation for keeping one on hand or in your bag in case you really want to back up some special or sensitive content and keep it off a live device.

Convenient Way to Backup iPhone locally

This flash drive is so easy to use and gives me peace of mind that my information is stored locally on my device and not on a server somewhere in the USA or overseas. The SanDisk app works well and makes transfering photos and other files from my iphone to the flash drive easy and painless. The only issue would be if you have a phone with a Otterbox Defender case or something similar which requires you to either have an extension cable if one exists for Lightning cables or to remove the case so you can plug the flash drive in (this is no discount to the usefulness of the flash drive but something to note).

Works amazing with both iPhone and Android devices. iPhones have notoriously bad storage options, and with the 1TB being over $1500 I can see why this can be so attractive for ios users. Well worth the price, I have used it to transfer my 200 Mega Pixel images from my S23 Ultra to my Fiance's iPhone without any loss of resolution that you get with most other sharing options. Want to have Hi-Res images on your iPhone? Get this, or spend a fortune on drop-box.

This thing is pretty cool, it works seamless with iPhone and Macs etc. However, one thing I noticed is the application doesn't work too well with my iPad Pro and I have to go through the "Files" app on it to access data. Other than that I love using this flash drive and moving stuff back and forth between my systems. It removes the need for all those adapters and junk apple makes you get just to plug in something.

Very easy to set up and use. You have to download their app. Does take a little bit more time than expected, but I haven't had any issues backing up documents, photos or videos. A plus is that it does ask you if you want to delete the selected item after it saves it which is great because you don't have to go back and to select and delete.

I understand products like this should not be dropped, and maybe they are just delicate, but mine stopped working after I dropped it once. It was my first time using it to back up photos from my phone, and I accidentally dropped it as I was unplugging it from my phone. It became unreadable and I was devastated to lose the same photos that I was attempting to back up. Thankfully I tried accessing it again weeks later and it worked! I made sure to copy the files and never use this product again :(

This flash drive is a good thing to have if you have an iPhone but use a windows pc/laptop. Pretty easy to use and makes transferring photos to your pc easier. I initially thought it was both a lightning and usb-c plug to use on an iPhone or USB-C Android but you can’t use the usb-c plug to transfer files from an android phone.

An excellent way for backing up and copying/transferring your phone/tablet/laptop data information with a USB-C and Lightning port devices. I'm using this to back up pictures and files on my phones and tablets. I have a Samsung phone that doesn't use a microSD card and use it to copy files to increase memory and I also you it for the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Downloading files is fast and the phones recognizes the device without a hitch. The device is solidly built.
