Western Digital Black lives on thanks to SanDisk
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The SanDisk Optimus GX Pro 850X 2TB SSDs is one of the best top-tier NVMe 4th gen drives you can buy right now. With Western Digital name going away from the SSD game SanDisk has taken up the mantle with the Optimus GX line taking the Black's place. I suspect the GX is mainly a a rebrand of the Black SN850X. This is not complaining. I'm glad that the WD SSDs can live on in a brand I already trust. The additional 2TB of storage give me plenty of space for me to offload videos, photos, and work files from my cell phone. The PCIe 4.0 connection ensures fast speeds up to 7.3GB/sec(read) and 6GB/sec(write) mean big files copy quickly, and it handles quickly storing and retrieving files or fast load times for games (if I choose to store games on this drive) without much slow down. The caveat to that is that is does not come with a heatsink so it can take a bit longer to shed the heat generated from prolonged heavy usage which can cause slow downs. This is true of any SSD but heat can become an issue for high performing drives are combined with poor ventilation. PCIe 5.0 drives exist(Optimus GX Pro 8100), but those will run even hotter. For my use case in a thin laptop mainly used for storage, the 850X is still a top tier PCIe 4.0 drive and the cooler running temps mean not having a heatsink is of no concern. If I choose to move it to a gaming computer, I would consider throwing on a heatsink. The biggest con for the drive is cost. Due to current state of chips it's unavoidable at the moment but at current prices it is definitely something you want to consider you absolutely need vs something that you want for the additional space. If you are looking for top performance for heavy work or gaming and money isn’t an issue, this is one of the best drives on the consumer market. For most normal users, a cheaper (slower) drive is probably enough until chip prices stabilize.

Super fast storage. Pretty simple.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you have the funds to actually build (or even upgrade) a PC at this point of time, then the price of this NVMe drive won't deter you because everything else is expensive these days too. Performance is what matters and this SANDISK Optimus drive delivers. Setup is a breeze like any other NVMe SSD out there. Find an open M.2 slot and make sure you have one of those screws to secure it on hand (this item is just the drive. You don't get any stand-offs or screws, so you might have to buy some if you don't have any lying around). After that, you're ready to go. If you're building a desktop PC, this is a great main drive. If you have a laptop that has an extra slot for a 2280 drive, this is a fantastic upgrade. I tested this drive in my main gaming PC and was incredibly happy with the speeds I was getting. I found the advertised speed on the box of 7300MB/s to be fairly close to what I was getting. The speed tests I ran saw nearly 7100MB/s on sequential reads and about 6500MB/s on sequential writes. Random reads and writes were pretty close together at just about 1100MB/s. So the bottom line is just that this is great drive that delivers great speeds. Would I suggest you buy one? Absolutely. Would I suggest you buy one today? Probably not. Prices on SSDs and RAM are incredibly inflated right now. The cost of this drive today (June 2026) is at least 3 or 4 times what you would have paid for a similar drive less than a year ago. If you need high performance disk space right now and don't value money all that much, pull the trigger today. Otherwise, if you can wait, see if you can hold out until the AI bubble bursts a bit and things start costing what they should again.

Fast load time, fast data transfers
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The SANDISK Optimus GX Pro 850X 2TB NVMe SSD is one of the fastest drives on the market, and you can really tell. My loading times have never been this short, and downloading/transferring files is lightning fast now. Even massive, demanding open-world games like Cyberpunk 2077 load near-instantly. The massive two terabyte storage capacity means that most of my important programs that rely on transfer speed can all be stacked onto this one drive, instead of me having to pick and choose which few I can fit onto the drive's storage. Installation is incredibly easy, as it is with all M.2 NVMe drives. All you need is an open PCIE x4 space that fits the drive, and it plugs right in with no hassle. Despite my version lacking the attached heatsink, I have not had any issues with the temperature, even under heavy load, so I really do not think the heatsink is needed as long as your computer has good airflow and temperature control of its own. All in all, the SANDISK Optimus GX Pro 850X performs wonderfully, and I would happily recommend it to anyone who needs more space or faster load times. An NVMe drive is almost a necessity these days, and this is one of the best ones out there.

No Heat Sink? No Problem!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The 2TB SanDisk Optimus GX PRO 850X SSD has proven to be a strong contender in this category. Installation was straightforward, but make sure your motherboard supports PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 2280 drives, this applies to both laptops and desktops. Nothing is worse than buying something completely incompatible with your system. Also, If you’re new to installing M.2 drives, take your time. The smaller the tech gets, the more delicate it becomes, so avoid using excessive force and risking damage to your new SSD. Performance has been exactly as advertised. I’ve had zero issues downloading or playing games, and everything feels snappy with fast load times. I’m using it as a secondary drive and it’s been completely trouble‑free. I also appreciate that SanDisk includes a 5‑year limited warranty, which adds peace of mind if you’re newer to the brand and unsure about taking the leap. Overall, you really can’t go wrong with this one. Definitely worth checking out, especially if you can catch it on sale.
