Below please find the response from Seagate Support re: a backup Seagate product I purchased from Best Buy: Dear Rick XXX Thank you for contacting Seagate Support. I understand that you are having an issue with the Seagate Dashboard with Memeo Instant Backup software after upgrading to Windows 10. Unfortunately, the Seagate Dashboard is not compatible with Windows 10 and there will not be a software update. The steps to uninstall the software are: 1. Open the Control Panel and select Programs and Features and then Uninstall a Program. 2. Select Seagate Dashboard and Memeo from the list of programs and click on Uninstall. 3. Please reboot the computer after the software has uninstalled. You will be able to access all of the data on the external drive through Windows Explorer and use copy and paste to transfer the data to the computer. To run a backup to the external drive, I would recommend using Windows backup utility called File History. Here is a link from Microsoft on how to set up File History with the external drive: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/set-drive-file-history Please reply to this email if you require further assistance or give us a call at 1-800-SEAGATE. We are available Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Central Time. Regards, Scott Seagate Support 1st Class Email Support

Be Warned. My drive died after 2 months.

I bought this drive 2 months ago and it's already dead. I bought it to back up all of my photos, documents, videos and music. I think I used about 45 gigs of the terabyte and it died. My PC (and the 3 other PC's I've tried) no longer recognizes the drive when I plug it in. The last 11 years of my digital life is being held hostage on this broken machine. If you have any data that you care about, I would put it on another product. I'm trying to recovery what information I can from the internet and friends right now. There is nothing I know of that can either restore my lost data or my faith in this product. The product is under warranty but they require the old drive before they give me a new one. I am not willing to let the sensitive information trapped on the drive fall into any one else's hands. Besides, I don't want another drive so that I can worry about the day that it too fails.

First off, I purchased this to replace a five-year-old WD that only had 500 GB. Big mistake. The software needed for this to operate in a Windows OS simply doesn't work. I have had to delete it and reinstall it on a weekly basis to keep from getting error messages that it has shut down. And this is going back to when I purchased the thing six months ago. Second, when I transferred data into this, I lost several years' worth of critical legal documents. Yes I was able to rescan them from hard copies--but I should not have had to if this thing had functioned properly. Contacting Seagate's tech support was an exercise in futility as they never responded. I have since replaced it with a new WD Passport and put the Seagate to the only useful purpose it really has--a target for a Sig Sauer. The only reason this gets one star is because I had to give it something. Really, it deserves no stars.

JUST SPENT HOURS TRYING TO GET THIS TO WORK

After spending hours trying to get this to recognize on my windows 10 PC, im giving up and returning it to Best Buy. i googled to no end for similar issues, followed the directions, downloaded the drivers, and dashboards, and still it will not show up for me to open the window and transfer files onto it. all i wanted was an external hard drive to save files, and instead got another thing to stress over and waste my time trying to get to work...as a new mom, i dont have time for this mess...if you pay the money for something, especially as simple as this, you should be able to plug it in and it works. very disappointed, and i plan on trying a different brand.if windows 10 is the problem, seagate should update their product.

I really had high hopes for this external drive, and I needed something to store all my work documents and family photo albums. Unfortunately, about a month after I saved all these files to the device, it stopped working and I was no longer able to access them. The device was now prompting me to format it, which meant losing part or all my files. Either way, I don't have access to any of those files anymore. I went back to Best buy to get some help and they advised me it had crashed and that apparently this brand external drives have been having major issues. Later on, I noticed they no longer carried it. Very disappointed!!!

I need a drive that easily works between a Windows and a Mac platform. I have used Western Digital drives now for years and they seamlessly move between both platforms and have never given me any issues at all. I've purchased 2 Seagate drives in the last 5 years. The first one failed completely after only 5 hours of use - costing me hours of photo editing. Seagate's response? Pay us and we'll recover your data. This is the second drive I purchased and I did so only because Best Buy was out of stock on WD drives. After several hours of looking at on-line support documents, downloading drivers, etc, etc I still was unable to get this drive to work between the Windows and Mac machines... I returned it and picked up a WD drive - it worked perfectly right out of the box.

I use this slim drive to travel with copies of my digital library (music & movies). I am very careful to protect this thing from rough treatment. While access time is average, the size is appealing. HOWEVER, this unit has crashed three times during no travel (meaning it sits on my desk). Thankfully it is not something I depend upon for work. The last crash took out its firmware and now it's a paperweight. After talking to Geek Squad, I find that these models of Seagate have a much higher failure rate than other vendors. Cost to fix is now approximately same as replacement. Quoth my raven, "Seagate never more."

I hate Seagate products, but was in a bind and was told BestBuy no longer carries my preferred Toshiba brand hard drives, so I went with this one. Horrible mistake. As with every other Seagate drive i've ever gotten, this one died. Only, this one died FASTER then the others. Purchased Dec 31, Clicks of death on 2/19. Please, if you have other options or brands to choose from, go with them and save yourself the headache. I've had these style hard drives, and the uprights that require a power pack to run, and none of them are reliable of an extended period. I didn't use this on a daily basis, in fact if it was used twice a week i'd be shocked, and yet it's dead already. My three year old Toshiba 2TB, still running like a champ.

I picked this item up today as a device to store my German Soaps on. I got it home out of the box and it never showed up as a usable drive. It never initiated the auto play function. It popped up in my camera and printers area. I was never able to access it or store anything on it. So I went to Seagate, they made me register it which I did. The software to install it was on their page and it didn't work. The dashboard application told me I could not use it because I didn't have a second Seagate drive. So I installed a paragon application for windows from the site. Did a restart and it just looped, restarting over and over. So now I'm reformatting, all my music, videos, games, documents, all gone. This trash is going right back to best buy tomorrow.

I've had drives like this before. Needed a bigger one for backups before is upgrade. Read reviews and recommendations for my then current operating system level. Bought this one. Plugged it in and no luck getting it to show up on my desktop. Odd buzzing noise, light was on. But it would not show up. Read mice type - it was for higher op system. Took it to work and told my IT guy I'd have to return it. He said he could format it to work for any mac, but tried it on higher systems on PCs and Macs we have, and it simply was not working at all, not showing up on any computer so he couldn't format it at all. He said it should not be buzzing like that. Returned for refund.

Do not buy! Buy a more sturdy BACKUP DRIVE!

Please do not buy. I was able to store my files on this device, but I was unable to encrypt the drive. An employee stated that I could encrypt, but I never had an option to do so. Once I backed up my system, I pulled the drive. I unfortunately dropped the backup device, maybe half of a foot from the ground is how far the drop was... not too high at all. My PC was unable to recognize the drive. I downloaded software called "Paragon" from the manufacturing company's website. Well, this software just made everything worse. I was unable to boot my PC!! Awesome! I was left with a useless PC and a useless external hard drive that still contained my files... wow!

This drive worked perfectly for about a month, but is now not recognized by any computer. I changed the cord and it still doesn't work. I bought it because I purchased a new desktop and needed to transfer my files. Unfortunately, I hadn't finished putting all of my files back on my new desktop before this drive stopped working. I will now have to pay between 100-350 to try to retrieve my lost files and there is no guarantee. They are extremely important to me and it is devastating that this drive is not reliable. I have had other drives for 8-10 years and they are still working fine. Very disappointing.

Does not work for MAC OS

I was sold this backup drive when I purchased my MAC computer from our local Best Buy store. I was ASSURED by the Best Buy sales associate, numerous times, that this would work with MAC. I have owned the device for almost a year and have tried several times to use it to no avail. Due to lack of time I have not made it into our local mall and just this morning did some research on the Seagate website. They clearly state that this device is NOT compatible with iOS or Mac although the box states "Easy backup for PC, Mac and mobile devices". I now have a $60 paper weight that I am hopeful Best Buy will do the right thing and allow me to return. Beware!

Drive OK - Software is a disaster

    Posted

This drive works fairly well for drag and drop backups and data exchange. The software that is included (Seagate Dashboard Agent) is horrible. When set to continuous backup, this software was extremely erratic, backups would stall without notification, etc. Downloaded updates from Seagate regularly hoping that would solve the problem but it didn't. In some cases I would log on to the dashboard software and see that my backup stalled a week ago and never re-started. Good thing I didn't have a drive failure on my PC. This thing is in the trash, I'm switching to a different manufacturer.

This is the first backup device I've purchased and have read the directions over and over. Seems to work well with my new computer but wish it had more detailed directions. Went online to a tutorial but still confused as to how to access the files I backed up from my other laptop. All the files are in weird order and no names (that I'm familiar with) are associated with the files. It came highly recommended (especially for a beginner like me) but I'm not impressed. I spent a several hours studying this and just gave up. Don't have time. It shouldn't be this hard or time consuming.

The Asus computer I purchased about a month ago locks up for about 60 seconds several times a day. I tried several things to try to fix it and finally went back to Best Buy and was told that if I paid them $200.00 they would look at it. I had had it less than 3 weeks. I contacted Asus and they wanted to wipe out everything I had spent over a week getting loaded and re-install windows. I bought another computer from another store and now I can let the techies at Asus re-do my 5 week old computer. Not a happy camper because of the way I was treated by Best Buy.

Exactly two weeks after I purchased this product it stopped working! I could not retrieve my documents and all the work I'd done during this time. I refused to pay $500 for Seagate to retrieve my documents when it was lost due to nothing I'd done, but a defective product It does not make sense to pay less than $100 for a product, but then to pay $500 to get your lost information I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND SEAGATE TO MY DOG!

I purchased this Hard Drive to use with my new MacBook Pro, I used the Apple USB-C to USB adapter. First I used the HD to transfer data from my old PC to my new MacBook. The HD made a strange squealing noise. I exchanged the HD. The 2nd HD worked well, for a few hours. I formatted it for Time Machine, it appeared to complete the back up, then was hung up on the encryption, then just died. I couldn't get the MacBook to recognize it. Neither could Geek Squad get any computer to recognize it. I've moved on to a different HD.

I put all my files on this as a back up to go between Mac and PC. The transfer from Mac to HD was flawless. About 6 months later when I got a PC I went to put music and photos on it. Most of the data was corrupted in some way. The music files stopped playing at certain points and the photos had funky colors and shapes on them. I tried deleting and putting files on again, same problem with the photos but in with different colors and shapes. I will be attempting to return this, hopefully there is a 1 year warranty .

Very disappointed with this purchase. Got it just prior to my husband leaving for a deployment to load movies for him to watch while he's gone. Got everything loaded and ready and it worked fine when he left. Stop working this past Monday which is just a few weeks after purchase. Went completely kaput. Very bummed that a product of this caliber couldn't last a few weeks. He'll be deployed for another two months at least and has nothing remotely entertaining available to him anymore.
