It backs up fine...but too much

When I first purchased the drive, it was to supplement a WD 3TB drive that had backup software that didn't work very well. The Seagate drive seemed to work much better...until now. I had configured the backup process according to the instructions, and all seemed to work fine. Knowing that 3TB was much more than I needed for all my documents, I had also created a photo back up folder that I manually used to save copies of my pictures. All that seemed to work fine until I checked today. The software had apparently stopped backing things up because the drive was FULL! No notification, no warning, no indication that there was a problem THREE WEEKS ago. If I hadn't gone in to look at it, I still wouldn't know that my recent files weren't being backed up. :-( So I looked into deleting the older duplicate files, but I can't find any way to reduce the size of the back up folders. All the directories the software created are labeled as incremental, so I can't just delete the older ones. The documentation says that multiple copies of any changed files are kept, but I can't find where they are. The only files that seem to be backed up are new ones, but there are a lot of folders created where SOME files could be saved, but they are empty by the time I get to the bottom of the chain. Sorry, but I now can't recommend this product. It appears that I will have to delete the backup plan, along with all the files that it saved for me, and recreate a new plan that will start the same process all over again.

Good drive, not cross platform compatible

I bought this drive to use as a work drive. I teach Photography at two different schools and work off of my own laptop. My personal laptop is a PC, both schools use Mac. This drive is advertised as being cross compatible for both platforms so I bought it. When I tried to use it on a Mac I couldn't access anything on it or add anything to it. I called Seagate and they told me the only way to use it on Mac is to download a software that will read the drive. This is not feasible for me as I work at two schools and could be accessing anywhere from 10-20 different computer stations not to mention neither IT department is going to let me download this software to any machines. Basically, I would have returned the drive but it was past the return date of 15 days and the package was opened. I took the drive to the IT department at one of the schools and they formatted the drive to XFAT and it's been fine ever since. Why can't the drives just be sold this way in the first place??? I have referred all my students with similar to do the same thing.

Works great on my Mac, terrible on my PCs

I've got three pcs and one mac, downloaded all my stuff on all my computers to this hard drive and then tried to access it the next day. All my pcs would not open any files saying I had infected/damaged files. This was a surprise to me since all files where inspected and worked fine. I went through everything the company said to do and more, everytime I ran tests that took forever it turned out all files were fine and there was no reason I could not open the files on any of my three thinkpads T43p computers. If I plug it in to the mac all is fine, no problem is I need it to work on my PC's! So now I'm back to flash drives..... This is not what I signed up for!!! I talked to many people at the company and did many, many emails and nothing helped. 100 Bucks down the drain.

Great hardware, lousy Help and instructions

I bought this to do what I thought would be a simple backup of my hard drive's Outlook emails. Installation was easy - you just plug it in. Then the frustration began. I did a backup, then tried to find my emails on the Seagate. Not there. Or maybe they are, but I can't find them. The Seagate Help service? It connects you to the Microsoft website, which is notoriously unhelpful and in any event not designed for Seagate products. I know I'm looking for a ".pst" file but I can't find it on the Seagate. Ugh. If only the genius engineers who design this stuff could get out of their bubbles and figure out how to communicate to us mere mortals.

I've used other drives with no problem but this is VERY difficult to use AND I had to PAY to talk to Seagate tech support???? What is up with that??? Within 4 backups I used 50% of the memory....IMPOSSIBLE! I bought the 1TB so I could backup for YEARS....turns out that it KEEPS copies of ALL previous backups so you have to go into your computer and REMOVE former backups to free space....Tech support told me that businesses use this which told me that this is NOT consumer friendly! Avoid!

I purchased the unit to back up my computer in order to get it restored back to Windows 8, (as Windows 10 was causing problems). I was able to store my information on the device, this did not seem to present a problem,(just took a long time). But now I'm just not sure what's going wrong as I can not retrieve the information. There were no written directions in the packaging to follow, not good! I'm having to research on line for directions and clarity in use of the unit. Therefore this review request may be too soon for an in-depth analysis.

I purchased this unit for my son just prior to his deployment. He told me that it broke during his 2nd week of use. I haven't had a chance to return it as he won't be back for awhile. We've had other Seagate drives and items that worked great for years, so we assume it is defective. However, the only bad reviews we found were the exact same issue. Next review will be about how accommodating they are with the return/repair.

this was bought primarily to back up my pictures but I haven't been able to figure out how to totally work it retrieving a portion of what I need yet,or to backup my picture programs like for my little camera..it uses its own program to download in and I cant get it to download...I just tucked the Seagate in the back of my desk because I don't want to have to try to figure it out anymore until I have TONS of time

it may be small and portable, but it does not have the performance of a bigger more expensive drive. I bought mine when I upgraded to windows 10. They were attached to my quadcore desktop computers. They were clunky to install and very slow to backup. So I cleaned up my old backup drives and am using those. These sit unused on a shelf. I keep wondering if windows 10 is the real problem!

I am on my second external drive, and am really disappointed that this is the 2nd time in 2 years that the drive just stopped working. No computer would recognize it, and support couldn't help. Use it for my MAC TimeMachine backups. Warranty great on this, and Seagate exchanged for replacement, but would rather have it work all the time. In the past, Seagate has NEVER disappointed me.

despite one of the answers to a question being that it works for MAC OS 10.6 or greater, in order to work as claimed (being able to share data between MAC and Windows) you need at least MAC OS 10.9. With my MAC OS 10.6.8, I reformatted it which enabled me to use it to store data, but I can not share that data with a windows system.

I'm sure this drive will work out great....once I get it installed on my IMac. Not easy to figure out, and no instructions included. Have spend many hours online trying to figure out, do I need dashboard???, Do I need to download drives? Would be nice to just plug in and go!!! Would still recommend brand, because it is one of the best out there.

Didn't work with any programs I wanted to save and also the drive wasn't available to repair so I ended up returning the product. I ended up buying another hard drive which just failed me about a few weeks ago and basically stuck trying to recover my files before it's gone for good.

I hope it works...have no idea at this point. Employee assured me that they were not on commission when he recommended security cost, hardware backup cost and 1 yr geek squad cost...very ineffective all the way around...disappointed enough to never shop Best Buy again.

Product was pretty 'weak" for my channel master dvr. Not compatible, sound registration kept skipping randomly. Also a 'hard' disconnection made it ynusable. Quite fragile, would not buy it again.

Frustrating to try to hunt through the Seagate web information to try to address configuration questions about back-up. In-box information lacking. Would prefer on-line or phone-based customer support.
