I purchased this hard drive with the plan to back up all of my files. I was able to do this quickly and successfully. The drive is really speedy utilizing the USB 3.0. However, the newer USB 3.0 connection became loose after a week of use. Eventually, my computer wouldn't recognize the drive unless I pressed the connector firmly into the drive. After some thought, I moved the back-up files back to my computer and returned the unit to Best Buy. I would purchase this again only if the connector issue is addressed. Maybe recess the connector into the unit? That way it won't move back and forth so easily...weakening the connection. If this issue is fixed, it could be a fantastic drive for the price.

Works Good With Windows, Linux, But Not Android

This hard drive is not compatible with Android. But it is compatible with Windows, Linux, when I tested it. The back up software is so-so, and I wish it would run a little more faster, and does not take long to back up your files. Back to Android, I tried to connect this hard drive through the OTG adapter, and the hard drive LED lights up, but does not get recognized (unusable) through the Android tablet. So no, I would not recommend this if you're going to use this as a extra storage drive for everything such as your OTG device that is an Android device, but it's fully recommended for Windows and Linux devices. Now as for Raspberry 1, 2, 3, same as a linux device, it should be able to work.

I had a Seagate back up drive before and it worked fine, but it stopped working when I got Windows 10. So I bought a new Seagate drive for my back up. I plugged it in and it didn't ask any questions ... it just started backing up EVERYTHING. It took more then 24 hours to complete. When complete I found a bunch of sub-directories and files with odd names ... nothing related to my file structure. I tried to contact Seagate service and was not given any real help. Just sent to a website that was no help. I think it is backing up my files ... but I am not sure ... and if it is can't find them to check. If you are a computer geek you might have better luck.

i loved the idea of getting an external hard drive for a great price, however, i have connected it to my mac and it backs up everything EXCEPT for the stuff i want backed up like my files, it gives no instructions on how to do it. I have to find time to take it to geek squad. more hassle than its worth. i work 3 jobs so its hard to find time to go in and have them look at it. it did back up apps and things i don't need bc they are backed up thru my cloud.i would recommend it for a windows comp or a mac if you know how to reformat things so your important files back up.

    Unreliable Automatic Backups

The backups from the computer to the drive seem to work, but backing up from a smartphone via the internet only seems to work if you have the program actively running on the computer, and not just in the background, and the app needs to be active on the mobile device as well. If either of those are not the case, no backups happen. As of today, Oct 2nd, no backup has been completed since Sept 27th, even though it's set to run every night, automatically.

The last seagate backup hard drive I bought had very easy to understand, step by step instructions for several basic operations. This one did not. I was mainly interested in making a mirror image of the hard drive to include programs and data. I was unable to find that option even in the online information for this item. We aren't all computer geeks that can navagate gadgets instinctively. If I wanted something for long term, I'd spend a bit more and get the solid state hard drive.

This thing seems to sort of maybe possibly work and function in a manner not inconsistent with the functionality expected by a reasonable buyer all things considered carefully with all due cons8deration for the necessity of padding out to a full fifty word review. Also! After further careful review it becomes clear that a sensible product evaluation would include a rating on an industry - accepted scale, so three hats off. And maybe around 12 clogs and a besplid for a durability score.

I have had average luck with these drives. The warranty is only useful to cover hardware replacement (not data) and requires you to have proof of purchase. I use these as Time Machine Backup drives for Macs. For Macs, make sure you get one with at least 3 times the capacity as you are actually expect to use on the computer. Remember, all drives fail sooner or later. Start backing up now and figure on replacing the backup drive before it fails (3~5 years on average).

    Insert WHAT disk?

Bought this to replace a Western Digital drive that has been giving me trouble from the start. I hook this one up and it says to insert the installation disk... it didn't come with one. The box just had the drive and the cord in it. Not sure how I am supposed to install the Seagate Dashboard when it keeps giving an error message. Frustrating. Instead of getting more frustrated, I am just using it as a hard drive rather than a synced back up.

The hardware does what's it's supposed to do: it's just a fancy thumb drive with a a lot more capacity. The automatic software for backing up is awful. It backs up only what is new in a separate file with an impenetrable and meaningless file name. So, if I am looking for something, I have to make my way through any number of files. I simply move things I want to save manually. I'd recommend this if I really didn't like you.

    External Hard Drive Review

The hard drive worked well initially but the instructions were less than clear. I had to get an experienced computer person to help me. It worked well on the first computer but then was more tricky when I tried to use it on other computers. Everything transferred great from the hard drive to the computer but not so well in the opposite direction. It serves it purpose but I am not sure I would use it to back up my hard drive.

There is enough storage space to last me a lifetime. It is my first experience with an external hard drive so it is impossible for me to give a comparison. It is equally difficult to rate it as to performance as I have no frame of reference. I will say it offers absolute ZERO on the direction scale. Definitely Absolutely, Unequivocally not an item for the low tech savvy people like me in the world.

I purchased this hard drive to hold photos. I have about 6000 between laptop, tablet and smart phone. But no idea if it will actually hold all of them. The transfer process is a little tedious, but if I can store all, I'll be happy. Actually disappointed in the lack of clear instruction (for a non-geek type like me) beyond initial plug in. So far it seems to be doing what it's suppose to do.

The Seagate backup drive was easy to install, but the software was sorely lacking. None was provided with the drive itself, and the Dashboard Agent that is downloadable from the Seagate website performs continuous and scheduled backups - but neither backs up in a user-friendly format, where My Computer (Explorer) can be used to recover files one-by-one, such as with a drop-and-drag process).

My summary (above) maybe our ignorance. My son wanted a Portable Hard drive to transfer files, pictures, etc. He has others, but this is the first one that we had to format. He is not able to copy and paste between hard drives. Newer hard drives seem to be getting less user friendly. Will be going back to Best Buy - Geek Squad to get assistance. If any one has knowledge of what to do let us know.

The booklet provided with the Seagate Backup Plus Slim 1TB Portable External hard drive does not give complete set up instructions. I would prefer to see more information on setting up the back up capabilities in the booklet rather than the 'just plug it in' that's provided. I will need to do more research on the product to fully understand what it can and cannot do.

I bought this, as an uninformed consumer, to use with both a newly purchased Macbook Pro and other Windows based PCs. Then I discovered that there was a free app the allowed the Macbook Pro read NTFS formatted drives. I installed that app, it worked perfectly, and returned the drive because it was redundant since I already owned a portable 1 TB Lacie drive that both platforms could use.

I bought this to back up content for a project. The price was typical but the 1st issue is, when using an apple computer, you must register the drive in order to use it which caused issues do to being on location and didn't have Internet. 2nd it's not comparable with other apple computers after you back it up. Just weird overall and difficult to use.

I had to buy external hard-drive to back up photos and important documents from clouds etc. but since my past hard-drive broke and now has 10 years worth of memories.. and it´s super expensive to recover those files.. I´m iffy about external hard-drives these days. Hopefully I won´t lose another 10 years´ worth of memories. Hopefully this proes me wrong.

It's work fine. I backed up files, but I can't figure out how to use the thing. I used it on Mac and then tried to connected it later to my PC. It won't open any files. I realize they are different computers, but I just wanted something that works like my flashdrive and will open my files on any computer. I think the Best buy guy told me to get the wrong one. Oh well
