Would not recommend - expensive and bad quality

I've had this Seagate Plus portable hard drive for Mac for about a year and have thus far had no problems. However, be wary once problems do arise. I first took the drive back to Best Buy to get it diagnosed, however apparently every computer in the Geek Squad department was being used to transfer data. So, the attendant offered to ship the drive to HQ to be assessed for *get ready* $200 processing fee. I wasn't even sure if the drive was the problem at this point. After trying the drive on various other Macs, with a number of other cables, I determined it was the drive that had the issue. After contacting Seagate, I was told that I could return my drive to HQ only to hear that Seagate "may replace your product with a product that was previously used, repaired, and tested to meet Seagate specifications." I'm sorry if I don't want a pre-used drive that was previously returned because of problems.. My brand new drive was supposed to "meet Seagate specifications" and it broke within a year.. Additionally, in order to recover my files, Seagate was going to charge a $50 processing fee *not too bad* ......AND a $550 recovery fee.. *jaw drop*. The problem was a faulty hard drive, and I don't recommend the product because of the terrible warranty (giving you a pre-used drive) and the insane cost to retrieve files when it wasn't even my fault that the drive broke. Thoroughly annoyed and will no longer buy from this brand.

this drive was a backup drive to another backup drive that was malfunctioning. I bought this because it had such a great rating and the customer service is reviewed as top notch. I haven't even owned this drive for 3 months. All of a sudden while opening a file off of the drive, it freezes, freezes my computer and fries itself. It will no longer work. But I can cough up $500 and get the files recovered. Let me assure you that this drive hasn't been ejected improperly, dropped or mistreated in any way. I was informed upon calling customer service that next time I can pay $30 for insurance for up to a year so if this happens it will cover data recovery. Here is an idea, how about make a better quality product and make it so this is not necessary. Since that wasn't offered at the front, I don't see why it should be necessary to pay $500 to get it recovered. But what the heck, it's just money, right?

This is a great, easy to use backup solution for my Macbook Pro. I plugged it in via the provided SuperUSB cable and Time Machine automagically started up and was ready to start backing up my Mac. I did take a moment to partition and rename the device before letting Time Machine have it's way. I use 2/3 of the storage for Time Machine and 1/3 of the storage for manually backing up important files. I do manual backups because I have heard horror stories of Mac's failing to restore from a Time Machine backup. For my "manual backups" I actually use an Automator script that kicks off when I mount the external drive, so there really isn't much effort or remembering that I have to do. "Worst case" (other than a HDD failure) is that I have to do a clean install and then manually restore my important files. Software and less important functions I can just reload and reconfigure. This HDD is small enough to be highly portable without creating a bulky or heavy laptop bag. My one complaint is that the provided cable is very short and tends to want to stay folded up in the shape it was packaged/shipped. I replaced it with a braided cloth-covered cable - I prefer the aesthetics.

Thumbs up on product; thumbs down on Bonus Offer

I'm pleased with the quality of this Seagate for Mac and the delivery was prompt. What I'm disappointed in is the "bonus" that Best Buy offered, which was your choice of a $20 gift in Shutterfly merchandise or an 8x8 free photobook. Each time I tried to redeem it, the code would load and I'd get a message that said "sorry, this code has been used." I called customer service twice and was transferred both times and they sent me a new code. On the third try (now this has taken me over an hour in time) I still got the same message - and I tried to redeem it on a different computer and my phone. See example (partial code blacked out) attached. The customer service rep said, "Sorry, we cannot give you another code - we've tried three times." I asked if she would just place an order - no. So, I've expended more than the $20 in time lost but it was principle... I do think Best Buy shouldn't offer something that has hitches in it. I am not a novice at computers - I'm on the computer over 80 hours a day. So, thumbs down on the bonus and thumbs up on the external hard drive.

    Awful, unreliable company.

I bought this drive and only three days after using it, it broke, by no fault of my own. It just would not connect to any computer, therefore I lost the files that I had put on it. I notified the company and they said I would have to send it in, and get a new one. I had to pay to ship it and to get special packaging for a BROKEN hard drive, when it wasn't my fault the drive broke! It was just ridiculous. It has been over a month and I still do not have the new drive. I did not pay $60 to get a drive that would mess up on me, then pay to ship it out so that I would have to wait forever to even get it back. There is no way to contact them about it except through email, an they take forever to answer! I am infuriated. I need this hard drive for class, and I keep getting yelled at because I don't have it. And there is no way I'm buying a new one.

It "says" it is for Mac

This drive appeared to have everything I wanted for a supplemental drive on my iMac. The Dashboard features make backups easy ... for a PC. But for Mac, it assumes you only want this drive for Time Machine. I already have a drive for Time Machine. What Dashboard functionality is left was not useful. Also, part of the instructions implied the need to re-format the drive for use with Mac. I'm not sure this was necessary, but it was confusing. And finally, I don't know if it was just a Java thing, but I had trouble using parts of the Seagate support web page with Safari. All in all, for me it just wasn't "for Mac". I would have rated it lower, but for use with Time Machine, it might be just fine. I'll never know, as I took the drive back.

I was in the market for an external storage device for my Mac and wasn't looking to spend a whole lot of money on one either. After browsing Amazon, eBay and BestBuy, I finally found one on BestBuy. After reading the good reviews of this product and the features it offers, and the great price. How could I not buy this decide? This product is amazing, it's quick when backing up my computer information, I mean at first it was a little slow because I had to back up a lot of things but after that it doesn't take long to backup my computer. Plus it's Mac Cabiable, so that's a good thing. The product is very nicely designed and works well. I highly recommend his external storage device to anyone who's looking for a low cost device that gets the job done without having any issues.

I bought the hard drive with the intention of putting my iTunes library from my Windows PC to transfer it to my new Mac. I was under the impression that it was a simple plug in play but it wasn't as simple as I thought. While it did work it took me a while to figure out that you had to format it to Windows before it would recognize the drive. I found this link very helpful.... http://osxdaily.com/2012/04/22/format-drive-mac-pc-compatible/ After formatting it it worked like a charm. Wished there had been more info about what I needed to do in the box instructions then having to figure it out on my own. Make sure before you format it that it's clean other wise you will loose anything you saved on it.

The Seagate Backup Plus for Mac is a good choice for backing up your data from Macs. It has a pretty simple interface to use, and it backs up automatically when plugged in via USB cable. 2 things that would improve it are being able to schedule the backups to occur at a specific date/time at regular intervals, and a better cable to plug into your Mac. I think the supplied cable is a little flimsy, and does not alway connect right away. And it just backs your stuff up on its own, no way to set any type of schedule. But it does back up everything, and it is nice and ordered to be able to find anything on the backups, which is the main purpose. Small improvements would make it a 5.

    The HD doesn't work

HD does not work on Mac Snow Leopard so I upgraded my machine to El Capitan and the computer still does not recognize the HD. Seagate Dashboard utility does not recognize the HD. Customer support did not respond to my online support request. After waiting for 3 days for someone to contact me, I called Seagate directly and all they asked me to check if the computer recognized the drive in disk utility. When the HD was not recognized, they said there was nothing else they could do for me. I also tried plugging the HD in a Windows machine, as per the recommendation from the customer service rep, and it also did not recognize the HD. What a waste of time and money.

Bought this Seagate Back Plus Slim and had it shipped to me. Worked for a few hours and died. Had put files on drive so had to return to a local Best Buy store. They told me on the phone they could wipe disk but at store said drive was defective so could not wipe disk. Best Buy sent me a replacement which also died after a few hours of use. Now have no working product and I'm out the money I spent. If you search on Google for Seagate Backup Plus Slim for Mac you will see many unhappy customers. My experience is this product is a piece of junk. I would not recommend it to anyone.

This is an easy way to back up your entire MAC and quickly. It just backs up your time machine so everything is there! The only complaint is that it doesn't seem to allow you to select WHAT to back up. I bought it to just back up my photos, but it automatically backs up the entire computer through time machine, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It's also slightly difficult to find what you're looking for on the hard drive after the back up. But if you just put what you're looking for in the search box you can usually find it.

I purchased this drive when I made the switch from Mac back to Windows this past year. Although it says it is for Mac, it can also be used to backup any Windows computer. It is just pre-formatted for Mac, which can save you 45 minutes. Pros: It is small, lightweight, cost-effective and used for Mac/PC Cons: It took me a while to figure out how to get my PC to recognize the drive & be able to backup. That was frustrating, but one of the keys I remember (I am writing this retroactively) is to download the Paragon Driver for Windows from the Seagate website. http://www.seagate.com/support/software/paragon/

The drive is slim and compact, making it very portable, plus the fact that it was instantly recognized by the MacBook Pro I connected it to makes it that much nicer, but the real feature that I found very appealing was its' accessibility in both OSX and Windows-based operating systems, which really works out seeing that the MacBook Pro that it's connected to is currently running BootCamp with Windows 7, and it's nice to know that no matter which operating system it boots into the files on this drive are accessible 24/7. Overall, a great little drive. The only way you'll regret this purchase is if you accidentally thought this was the 2TB model!

Bought this to use on my macbook pro 15" retina and my surface pro 3, one as timemachin and one as regular hd. You have to do a quick split first so that one half is mac compatible and the other is PC, and after that, my HD's been working like a champ. Only complain is, the software that Seagate installs froze my computer, so do not install it, you don't need it. The HD is pretty light, very slim, and pretty fast. I am able to transfer GB of data from computer to computer with ease, and the 1TB I got is very good for my usage as well. BTW I got my wife the mac version, hers needed no partition obviously and has been working nicely since day 1.

I bought this soon after buying my first Mac, because we all know how how hard drives like to say they can switch PC/Mac, but not really. The first time I plugged it in, I didn't realise it would take an hour to do the first TimeMachine Backup, so I canceled it out. When I later went back to it, it wasn't quite so plug'n'play. Still, it's a good quality hard drive with the software already on it (although it refuses to let me register the software and insists my code is wrong even though it autofilled itself), and the data transfer seems fast. I got it slightly on sale which makes me feel a little better about the price, and haven't had issues so far.

I bought the Seagate 1TB hard drive not even 4 weeks ago and it has already broken. I took it into Best Buy and they said that they see the files, but they have become unuseable. There was no mal-use done to the drive. I improperly ejected it one time, but that shouldn't have caused the thing to fail altogether. When I was in Best Buy, a worker who wasn't at the geek squad table told me that there had been a lot of this hard drive being brought in for the same reason. Best Buy is selling a bad product and doesn't care. If you value your data, do not buy from Seagate.

Excellent portable hard drive for traveling

    Posted
    Jack

This hard drive is by far the best portable drive I have ever used. I store all of my audio samples for music production on it, and there is no delay in loading up a sound in my software. This drive is much more durable than the Western Digital MyPassport Ultra, as I dropped one off of a desk, and it was no longer functional. However, with this Seagate Backup Plus 1tb drive, it has survived multiple falls and hits with no resulting issues or damage. Still, definitely take care of this drive. Seagate makes a rubber case for this drive for about 10 dollars, which is totally worth it for the extra protection.

I have this Seagate because my backups for the system overall are mounted in a rack. They are Glyph Hot Swaps and they are each 1 TB and are very fast. But, they are too big and bulky to carry somewhere for data swaps or integration. But the Seagate can be unplugged from the USB 3.0 put in my shirt pocket and taken anywhere I need to be with it, without any hassles or issues. Very handy "little" device with the same power as the big boys.....but not so physically big. In fact it is about one-tenth the physical size with the same storage space and speed. Very nice indeed.

The Seagate Backup Plus Slim for Mac using Time Machine is a plug and play using Apple's Time Machine. Simply attach the Seagate to your computer via USB and follow the instructions for identifying and setting up the device to work with your computer. The case so far, has been durable for travel and the slim profile makes it a perfect fit taking with you (briefcase, backpack, or a pocket). This is the second Seagate purchased, the previous while maxed out on memory retains about 6 years history on a prior MacBook. Would buy another Seagate!
