Customers recognize the Expansion 20TB External Hard Drive for its substantial storage capacity and satisfactory overall performance. While some appreciate its pre-formatted ExFAT for broad compatibility, others have concerns about the drive's write speeds and connectivity limitations. The noise level is acceptable for most users.

The drive worked fine right out of the box. I did need to reformat it to NTFS as it came formatted in exFAT. That's a very simple step. It's only been running for a week, so I will update if there are any performance issues.

Picked this unit up as long term backup for my hard drive. Nice unit, does make a somewhat frequent rumbling noise which is annoying.

Works fine. Barracuda drive model : ST20000DM001-3Y3103.
Ignore all the other less informed reviews saying it's only 18TB. It's a full 20,000,586,850,304 bytes viz. about 20TB (1 Tera bytes = 10^12) or about 18TiB (Tebi Bytes = 2^40) as listed on the box. Not less, but in fact about 586 MB more.

So far so good. They are Seagate BarraCuda ST20000DM001 drives. I've got 2 set up with ZFS mirroring in a sort of RAID setup with a Jetson Nano as a interim NAS with Samba sharing. Seems fine until I upgrade my raspberry pi from a 2 B to something newer (32bit OS cannot do RAID on such large drives)

Using it to back up files between Mac and PC. Works seamlessly between the two systems, just plug and play. Speed is as expected for a HD. Got it on sale when it was $230. Only suggestion for improvement would be when it’s vertical it can vibrate a little when the disks are spinning full speed. Enhancing the vibration dampening for future versions would be nice.

I have had no real complaints about this, although I know some people have made comments. Works for my use case and I would buy again.

HDD Still A Solid Option for Digital Storage

I purchased this HDD over an SSD due tot he sheer amount of space it has. While I was a bit fearful of an actual disc drive vs a solid state, I’ve been pleasantly impressed by its performance and read/write speed. The gentleman at the BestBuy location in Greenville was very knowledgeable and helpful in aiding me in getting the right storage device and storage type I needed for my complex video editing files. Doesn’t hurt that I was also able to use my BestBuy credit card to earn rewards from this purchase as well. All in all a very good experience and a great product.

Nice drive for the space and money when was on sale. Still today people do not understand HDD sizing and should read up before buying something. Same as others reported all 3 I bought are Barracudas. other specs 7200rpm, 512mg cache (misc drive utilities show cmr and not smr). They are in my nas now and only time will tell how long they will last compared to any other drive.

Drive inside mine was a Barracuda, but its not a classic Barracuda drive from their traditinal consumer line, probably is a binned down Exos HAMR that they are whitelabeling as Barracuda now. Performance is around 250/mb which is in line with the my other drives in my unraid server. Basically impossible to shuck without breaking clips on HDD enclosure. 100% would recommend

should be obvious, by 2025, that the stated storage amount isn't what is 'usable' and will vary depending on internal specs.etc. dunno why i keep seeing ppl review and not understand this....
mine runs fine... transferred 10TB~ of files over without any issues. the plastic shell is a bit cheap feeling compared to the WD easystore/element externals. really wish these companies would stop using that usb connector.... they probably over supplied and refuse to use anything else. overall... $230 isn't great(at all), but it is what it is.

There's no way I could use all this space, but I don't have to worry about running out of space and the drive has permitted me to back up all my work (personal, bills, etc.) very easily. Peace of mind.

As there is no power button on this hard drive, it sleeps until activated. Each time it needs to spin back up again, it freezes the file explorer in Win 11. I love the mass space, but not sure this is a keeper for what I need it for, as it will probably just slow things down too much. Great price though.

I've had this hard drive for 5 months. Though it can make some clunky noises coming up to speed, it is accessible in about 4-7 seconds if it has timed out.

First one I got was DOA. Second one is very slow to get recognized by windows. Once it does, its fine. Copy speeds are very slow as well. I knew it was going to be a slow drive, but it's for backup storage so not a big deal on speed after I finally get everything over. No noise complaints.
