    Many limitations and nuances.

I REALLY loved the idea of this; I even watched a few videos before it arrived from the company so I thought I was prepared for its use. Setup was a breeze. The app installed without issue. The remote setup was simple and got pushed an update as soon as it connected to WiFi. There are some things that you need to understand when using this remote. This can be configured two different ways: by default it acts as a traditional ‘universal’ remote, though it needs to contact your mobile App to fully add new devices. The other way is a ‘point-to-control’ type mode. Traditional Remote Mode: The remote is a bit cumbersome to use, let me explain. It’s a very small touch screen. To get from volume up/down to Menu Up/Down (for example), you have to swipe left or right. While that may not seem like a big deal, it can be. To go from TV to Receiver (for another example), you have to use the top of the small screen to swipe to the device you want to control. IF you accidentally tap the device at the top, it shuts that device off. If you have a TON of devices to control, like I do, you can get lost and miss the image. When you add a device, it seems to "download" configuration specific to your device - but it doesn't. It downloads generic IR codes for that vendor and the buttons it gives you don't always (or for me, ever) line up. For example: Aux 1 on the remote, is "TV" -- and TV is Aux 10 (which my receiver doesn't have). You have to re-map the buttons which to me, defeats the purpose. Now, if you want to use the ‘point to control’ mode - and thus saving yourself from having to swipe to select a device to control you have to install / hang the sensors around the room. While that may not seem all that awful, it is. Each sensor MUST see the other *and* they all have to see the charging base. All 3 need to be installed even if it’s an 8x10 room because the remote seems to always be emitting IR in this mode - and uses 3x sensors to triangulate where it’s pointing. Oh yeah, the charging base. It’s USB-C which is great, though it has to sit upright and I can only see it getting bumped and snapping off. I was hoping it was a magnetic charging base … maybe for the next version. But before that mode works, you have to hold the remote in front of the device you want to control and ‘pair’ it with that spot in your room. Point at the TV, the input on the screen switches to TV and you get a slight haptic vibration … pretty cool. Well, it’s cool if you only have one thing in that general direction. If you have, say, a TV with a receiver below it, you can’t control them both because there is no height determination with the sensors, just general direction. To control your TV, you should position the remote off to the side of the room during remote location pairing and then remember that you have to control the TV pointing nowhere near the TV. The remote should be placed on the charger every night. After 2 nights of it being off the charger, it dies and needs to be re-calibrated with the sensors (point the remote at the blinky light for every sensor and hit a button). I have never needed to charge a remote overnight and have had it die three times already … and have fallen back to my old remote + Google Home integration. Lastly, there is no way to start/turn on SmartTV Apps -- not natively. While you CAN set up a routine to turn on TV, Receiver, change Input -- but it can’t launch, Netflix, for example. Yet. They say it's coming. The way around it is to “create a mapped button” from a remote that *can* launch Apps. Even then, it can’t be part of the routine, you have to hit the button afterwards. I reached out to support with some general questions and they were responsive, so they have that going for them. It does control my Hue lights without issue, though it always starts at "yellow" so if you want to solely lower the brightness, it changes it to yellow first and then lowers it. That's pretty annoying. At this time and with these limitations, I can’t recommend this remote. I just can’t.

We’re sorry to hear that Smart Remote is underperforming for you in a few areas, but thanks for sharing all this detailed feedback. We’d like to get in touch with you to follow up on a couple points that seem like unexpected behavior. Please send us an email at support@sevenhugs.com when you get a chance. In the meantime, here are a couple tips that should improve your overall experience:

      1) The best way to control your entertainment center is by creating AV Scenes, which allow you to control multiple devices simultaneously with a single button. You can also combine controls from multiple devices into one interface (e.g. control volume for your AVR on your TV control screen) All your AV Scenes will appear in a list on Smart Remote. Just tap the device you want to watch and let Smart Remote do the rest (turn on the right devices, switch to the right AV inputs, display the right control screen). You can easily access all your AV Scenes in either Manual Selection Mode or Point Mode. Once you’ve created AV Scenes for all your media players and set top boxes, there really no reason to control one of these individually any more.

      2) The best way to control your home theater in Point Mode is to locate your AV Scene list at your TV. This way, when you point at your TV, you’ll see a list of all the media players and set-top boxes that are available to watch with a single tap.

      3) If you don't like how a default control screen is designed, you can fully customize all the controls and buttons for any devices or AV Scene using the Smart Remote app. Sevenhugs

While we have not had any issues with the set up or functionality of the remote, there are three main issues I have which I didn’t even consider prior to purchasing. The first problem is the battery life. Basically it needs to stay on the charger almost constantly when it’s not in use. Otherwise, the battery dies rather quickly when it’s just sitting next to you not in use after about maybe a day. It’s easy when you are going about your day to forget to set it back on the charger. I also feel as though it loses its charge without warning. So you could be sitting there wanting to change the channel but you can’t because the remote died two hours ago and you had no idea. My second issue is with the size of the remote. I never thought I would say this but there is an advantage to having a larger remote: the bigger it is the harder it is to lose. This remote is tiny and smooth so it gets dropped and gets lost in the couch cushions constantly. My third issue is probably the biggest and that is because it is a touch screen, it adds a level of difficulty I had not considered before buying it. If you have fat fingers like me, forget it. I’m constantly touching the wrong thing and inadvertently changing the channel or rewinding/fast forwarding or changing the setting. You have to look at the remote when using it. It sounds dumb to say but it’s true. Most people I know change the channel without looking at the remote. You cannot do that with this. It’s rather annoying and it’s enough to make me want to get a different remote entirely. If you have a family, small children, fat fingers or just like to watch tv or movies at home this is not for you.

Thanks for your comments and feedback, we are always finding ways to extend and improve the battery life as our Smart Remote is a touchscreen universal remote so it will always consume more battery than normal remotes (Think on the same lines of Smart Phones) however we have various implementations for this coming.

This is the first version of our Smart Remote and we went with the design that we felt would be suitable for a majority of our potential users. In the future there will be different models and sizes available for Smart Remote that will fit more individual needs of customers (We are also working on a “Find my remote” feature to locate the Smart Remote incase it ever gets lost)

The whole design and concept of our Remote is to be touch screen, we understand that this may not be what you are used to but we are confident that given some time you will come to like and appreciate Smart Remote and its features. Sevenhugs

    Good but not as advertised

To start I would like to say that the remote does work to control multiple devices. Down fall is that it doesn’t suport a lot of smart home devices that work with Apple home kit. There were a few things that were advertised but not yet implemented such as the “point to the window to get the weather” or pressing the button on the charging dock to find the remote. The button exists but does not work currently. As for the pointing feature, as I do see it being nice, it’s on realistic for entertainment purposes. If you have your tv, cable box, and Apple TV all in the same area it’s not going to work. This is however nice to control lighting but as I said before, a lot of smart home devices are yet compatible. I was really looking forward to using the pointing feature but I never got to really use it. This remote sounds really cool and the thought of it is intriguing but it’s not as realistic as it may seem. I did like having all my remotes on one device and that worked very well. I only wish I could have the volume button for the tv on the other remotes like the cable box and Apple TV instead of shaving to switch back to the tv remote to control the volume. It was also annoying to keep charging. If I accidentally left it off the charger during the day I would have to use the regular tv remote. Another thing I would like to point out is how you use the remote. For me as least I like my current remote more because I know what the buttons feel like And I don’t have to look at my remote when using it. With this smart remote, it’s just a flat screen and I have to constantly look down to make sure I press the right button. The product is great in theory (especially of how it’s advertised) but because a lot of things aren’t get implemented and more smart home devices need to be added, it’s not worth the price point. I did end up returning this.

We’re sorry to hear that Smart Remote is not living up to your expectations. Below are a few tips that should solve some of the issues you mentioned, but please drop us an email at support@sevenhugs.com so that we can help. We look forward to hearing back from you.

      1) We just launched a new software update last week that gives you the ability point at your TV and see a list of all the available media players and options available to you (Apple TV, Smart TV, cable box, Blu-ray player, Xbox, etc.). Just tap on whichever device you want to watch and Smart Remote will turn on all the right devices and automatically switch to the right AV inputs. This AV Scene feature also allows you to combine control of multiple devices onto one screen, so you can control the volume of your TV while also navigating your media player. We recommend creating an AV Scene for each media player or content source you own, which should dramatically improve your Smart Remote experience.

      2) We also just launched a great new trackpad navigation feature for Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV users. This allows you to easily navigate and browse content menus without need to look down at the screen on Smart Remote. We’ll be eager to hear what you think about it.

      3) Smart Remote requires daily charging, so it’s best to return it to the charging base when you’re done using it for the day.

      4) You can see all the brands and devices that Smart Remote currently supports on the compatibility page of our website: https://sevenhugs.com/compatibility/. If you don’t see a brand or product listed that you want, please vote for it here: https://support.sevenhugs.com/category/device-service-requests. Sevenhugs

I purchased the smart remote after reading about it for years. But after using it, the Harmony Hub is overall better. Yes it’s nice having a dedicated controller, but for the price and what it does, you can find better products like the Harmony Elite. But here are my positives and cons. Positives 1. Connect to almost all devices effortlessly 2. Very modern and sleek design 3. Smart home app on iOS is very nicely designed. Cons 1. The special sauce of this device is pointing to the device you want, and it recognizes it. I put up the sensors on the walls, and follow the directions on the remote, but I wasn’t impress. It wouldn’t change to the device I was pointing to at all. I always have to use the carousel. It does say in the directions when you have more than one device by each other this what you have to do, but I felt this was the killer feature, it didn’t work for me consistently. A Logitech harmony remote worked better. 2. It was buggy. I got everything connected and working. Than hours later, devices was having issues working with the remote. I had to reset the device and add everything back again. 3. Remote layout wasn’t the best on some of the devices, like my TiVo. 4. Also since I have a Harmony Hub, and google home display, there isn’t no need for this remote. I feel like this device is still in beta. Maybe after all the features are available and the price is cheaper I may revisit this remote again, but today I’m returning it

Thanks for sharing your feedback. We’re very sorry to hear that you seem to be experiencing some issues with Smart Remote and we’re eager to help. When you get a moment, please get in touch with us at support@sevenhugs.com. In the meantime, here are some tips that should solve most of the issues you mentioned.

      1. Regarding Room Sensor setup and Point Mode, we'd like to help you make sure that your Room Sensors are installed correctly and that your devices are located properly. With a quick email exchange or phone chat, we're confident we can get you up and running.

      2. This is definitely unexpected behavior that we’d like to investigate further. Also, you should never have to re-add all your devices if you encounter an issue. If you ever need to reset Smart Remote, you can recover your complete configuration and all the devices you added by reconnecting Smart Remote to your Smart Remote app.

      3. Smart Remote gives you the ability customize all your control screens. This is one of the big benefits of owning a touchscreen remote. If you don’t like the default layout of your Tivo control screen, you can edit the buttons and controls to be just the way you want them. Pease give it a try and let us know how it goes.

      4. Most of our users are replacing all the remotes they currently use with Smart Remote. Smart Remote is also intended to be a complementary device to your Google Home when it's not convenient or possible to be in front of your Google Home display or when you want to control your TV set up. I purchased this to control my TV, sound bar, Fire Cube, and smart home items. It did fine for the media devices but I found that it really can't control the majority of my smart home devices. No support for ecobee thermostats yet and not able to integrate with SmartThings. The point feature is a neat party trick but honestly I found it kind of annoying for daily use and not accurate enough for my liking, plus the sensors on the wall are kind of ugly and not very flexible as to where they can be placed. Lastly, the full touch screen makes it less comfortable to control your TV, as you pretty much have to be looking right at the remote to see what buttons you are pressing. The Hue controls also felt clumsy and it was difficult to set the desired lighting settings. I ended up exchanging for a Logitech Harmony remote instead, which has its own shortcomings but can at least control most of my smart home items.

Thank you for your feedback, we are always pleased to receive this kind of feedback as it helps us to further improve on our Smart Remote.

At the moment we only support control for Nest thermostats from Nest however we are constantly working round the clock to integrate support for newer devices on a priority basis so devices such as the ones you mentioned will undoubtedly see integration very soon so please stay tuned !.

We chose to go for a Smartphone look and feel when designing our Smart Remote as a diversion from the normal larger sized button remotes, in the future we will have various Smart remotes coming in different shapes and sizes.

With regards to the Hue and any other issue that we could help you with please do not hesitate to reach out to us at support@sevenhugs.com and we would be more than happy to assist you with anything. Sevenhugs

Purchased this after I lost the remote to the tv and figured it would help combine all remotes into one easily usable package. I do like being able to customize the button layout and it was very easy to set up. The problem comes when the device crashes and has to reboot several times before you can use it again. After this first occurred, it became more frequent with each use of the remote. I am returning this device tomorrow for the reasons stated above and would not recommend this to others. Only gave two stars because when it works it’s not all bad but it just doesn’t work enough.

I bought this to replace a Harmony remote. This remote is easy to set up but the buttons are small on the screen. Battery life could be better. Hope that it gets updated soon with the ability to add buttons that go directly to DIrect TV channels

      Hi,

Firstly we would like to thank you for the feedback which we greatly appreciated as it helps us to improve on both our device and the experience from the user. The buttons on the Smart Remote were designed in this way due to our remote having a small screen and lay-out, similar to that of a Smartphone but smaller which is the direction we are going. so that for users who prefer larger buttons such as yourself, that need is also catered to as well as potentially smaller and larger sizes of our Smart Remote available.

The battery consumption level is due to the fact that our Smart Remote is a touchscreen universal remote which means it will consume more battery than a classic remote. Our dev team very often releases updates that further prolong the battery life and there will be a great improvement in the coming updates.

As for the favourite buttons this is definitely on our roadmap and hope to have it added to Smart Remote soon , please do not hesitate to head on over to our website and contact a member of our support if you ever need assistance or have any queries. Sevenhugs
