I really wanted this to be my go to remote. But couldn't outperform the LG Magic Remote. It also should be a little bit larger and too many misclicks if not held appropriately. I may keep it to control just my lighting.

    Good but not as advertised

    Apple tv, Battery, Compatibility

To start I would like to say that the remote does work to control multiple devices. Down fall is that it doesn’t suport a lot of smart home devices that work with Apple home kit. There were a few things that were advertised but not yet implemented such as the “point to the window to get the weather” or pressing the button on the charging dock to find the remote. The button exists but does not work currently. As for the pointing feature, as I do see it being nice, it’s on realistic for entertainment purposes. If you have your tv, cable box, and Apple TV all in the same area it’s not going to work. This is however nice to control lighting but as I said before, a lot of smart home devices are yet compatible. I was really looking forward to using the pointing feature but I never got to really use it. This remote sounds really cool and the thought of it is intriguing but it’s not as realistic as it may seem. I did like having all my remotes on one device and that worked very well. I only wish I could have the volume button for the tv on the other remotes like the cable box and Apple TV instead of shaving to switch back to the tv remote to control the volume. It was also annoying to keep charging. If I accidentally left it off the charger during the day I would have to use the regular tv remote. Another thing I would like to point out is how you use the remote. For me as least I like my current remote more because I know what the buttons feel like And I don’t have to look at my remote when using it. With this smart remote, it’s just a flat screen and I have to constantly look down to make sure I press the right button. The product is great in theory (especially of how it’s advertised) but because a lot of things aren’t get implemented and more smart home devices need to be added, it’s not worth the price point. I did end up returning this.

We’re sorry to hear that Smart Remote is not living up to your expectations. Below are a few tips that should solve some of the issues you mentioned, but please drop us an email at support@sevenhugs.com so that we can help. We look forward to hearing back from you.

      1) We just launched a new software update last week that gives you the ability point at your TV and see a list of all the available media players and options available to you (Apple TV, Smart TV, cable box, Blu-ray player, Xbox, etc.). Just tap on whichever device you want to watch and Smart Remote will turn on all the right devices and automatically switch to the right AV inputs. This AV Scene feature also allows you to combine control of multiple devices onto one screen, so you can control the volume of your TV while also navigating your media player. We recommend creating an AV Scene for each media player or content source you own, which should dramatically improve your Smart Remote experience.

      2) We also just launched a great new trackpad navigation feature for Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV users. This allows you to easily navigate and browse content menus without need to look down at the screen on Smart Remote. We’ll be eager to hear what you think about it.

      3) Smart Remote requires daily charging, so it’s best to return it to the charging base when you’re done using it for the day.

      4) You can see all the brands and devices that Smart Remote currently supports on the compatibility page of our website: https://sevenhugs.com/compatibility/. If you don’t see a brand or product listed that you want, please vote for it here: https://support.sevenhugs.com/category/device-service-requests. Sevenhugs

Created more problems than it solved

    |
    Posted .

Purchased this after I lost the remote to the tv and figured it would help combine all remotes into one easily usable package. I do like being able to customize the button layout and it was very easy to set up. The problem comes when the device crashes and has to reboot several times before you can use it again. After this first occurred, it became more frequent with each use of the remote. I am returning this device tomorrow for the reasons stated above and would not recommend this to others. Only gave two stars because when it works it’s not all bad but it just doesn’t work enough.

Part Swiss Army Knife, part bacon...

    Battery, Compatibility

Everything is better with bacon. The Smart Remote is a an amazing little device that made my technology so much more integrated and user friendly. I've paid for my technology, so it is important to have my technology pay me in ease. I've had universal remotes before from Logitech, and Sony, as well as apps on an iPhone. But the problem is, they were all limited in feature sets, compatibility, and NONE of them had positioning. The Smart Remote has brought us one step closer to Jarvis. It is incredibly easy to use, and easy to set up. I have a sea of remotes at my house, and they are all different. Some have a backlight, some wifi, some are "smart", some IR, and the list goes on and on. Home Automation doesn't have any real standard yet, so companies paired their technology across a disparate group of manufacturers, and made them work together with things like SmartThings, Wink, or Alexa. Nobody has wrangled them all like the Smart Remote does. I never had to reprogram it. I also never felt like I was carrying a car battery in my hand, and the haptics were tastefully implemented, not like a cattle prod. Lastly, is the responsiveness of technical support. I have a technology background, so I know what it is like to have tech departments sequestered through a maze of supervisors. They were very responsive, and even if they didn't have background information on my use, they didn't care. They ONLY wanted to make sure I enjoyed their product. I've used the Smart Remote for 6+ months, and if I had used my Logitech remote as frequently as I have the Smart Remote, I would have had to reprogram the remote at least 3-4 times by now. Unlike your traditional Logitech remote, the Smart Remote has glass, and there aren't actual buttons. This enables them to have much better control on the screen space, so when you customize something like creating your own scene, there's room to have features from different devices fit on the screen so you aren't swiping all day long. It is just a really great bit of technology making play time with your remotes, a thing of beauty. It is a Swiss Army Knife because of all the features and vendors they support, and it is integrated together seamlessly, making it just like bacon.

    Apple tv, Battery

Got this & the Smart Remote U a few months back. Both work well, the setup on both was really easy with the nod going to the X & the auto-sensing feature. Works well with my Samsung TV, Tivo Bolt, Denon Receiver, Sonos Beam & AppleTV 4 (good riddance). The keyboard is awesome & infinite amounts better than the terrible Tivo Bolt remote. Searching YouTube/Netflix/Hulu is actually easy now! The screen is good size & the swipe between devices works well. The scene function is nice & works well. It's worth mentioning that our toddler loves that we were able to change the background pic to McQueen from Cars). The battery life seems to be fine, we store the remote in the doc so we know where it is (although it does have a find remote feature). As random as it is, I'm most excited that it controls my AppleTv . I HATE AppleTV remotes. The old silver ones worked well but got lost every 17 seconds. The new, black "Siri" remotes are terrible. I sold both of our Apple TV remotes to recoup some of the cost of the SevenHugs. Battery life isn't great but since the terrible Apple TV remotes got us in the habit of leaving them in the same place so we don't lose them, I just put the charger for this there. Really excited though. Works well with all my stuff & didn't break the bank. My wife even likes it, which I can't say is the case with most of my electronics purchases.

Out of the box it quickly navigated to my network but due to some problems with its software not upgrading I couldn’t use it for about 48 hours - sent an email and in less than 2 hours I had a solution and was up and running fast!! This thing is amazing. If you lose it in the cushion it doesn’t push buttons like other streaming device remotes or cable/dsl remotes. I guess the outcome is two parts - customer service is FAST and helpful and when I started emailing back and forth with Annie it’s like texting. Second the remote is awesome - it integrates with Amazon and Google devices seamlessly. I can lock my doors turn the thermostat all lights are automatically put in if there is a hub. This remote finds all of the devises.

Cool concept will be better when fully fleshed out

    Pros mentioned:
    Buttons, Design, Features

So I have to say the idea of a remote that controls everything is one of those kind of sci-fi things that I can remember from movies. While companies try to do this with phones it never really works out because of the many different user interfaces and honest the phone form factor is a bit to large to hold comfortably in one hand while controlling things. The Sevenhugs Smart Remote is a strong contender at an attempt to address some of those shortcomings. Like some other smart remotes out there, it has functionality to control almost anything from Smart TVs to Smart Thermostats and Smart Lightbulbs (IE: Hue) with continued work to add more devices. Currently I've set it up for my TV and soundbar and while setup wasn't the best (more on that in a minute) the unified interface is something I can appreciate. I was a little bummed that my Nest thermostat shows as 'coming early december' on the site, but is not yet available. With all the other 'smart' devices I have in my house I'd need to walk around to recall what they all are to try to add them to the remote. To start, the initial setup of the remote and connecting to it to get started is quite easy. It did have an issue connecting to my WiFi the first time, though a quick retry fixed that. Strangely the remote only supports 2.4GHz WiFi which seems like a shortcoming to me. Once it was connected and I downloaded the app on my phone, it was a fairly quick process to get it paired as it found it on my network then asked me to put in the security code to pair it to the app. Then I was off, attempting to add devices to the remote. This remote works in two ways when attempting to add devices. The first way is similar to that of things like the Harmony remotes where you specify the manufacturer and the model number, and I by far prefer this method... I did, however, run into an issue where my Sony HT-Z9F sound bar was not recognized, but the remote is not detterred... Instead it allows you to select 'Sony' as the sound device manufacturer then you can step through pressing the power button until it finds the correct IR codes to control it. This is cool, but it does end up with functions that dont entirely match the device you're controlling (my Sony sound bar has essentially 2 HDMI inputs, Analog and Optical, but the remote has like 10 separate inputs defined). I can control it, but it's not a perfect 1:1 setup as if it knew what it was. That's to be expected though since it did not recognize the model number... That does display a shortcoming on the site of Sevenhugs though as they need to keep on top of their device database. I was easily able to add my Tivo Roamio Plus and my Samsung TV without issue and controlling each is fine. Once you set up a few devices you can then create a 'scene' which is essentially a macro of commands or devices to control... for example 'Watch TV' includes my TV, sound bar and Tivo, all of which it turns on and sets to the right inputs, very similar again to a Harmony type device. I did notice, however, that the initial screen after turning on my scene has a button layout that I would say isn't the best. I noticed the Guide button wasn't even on the main panel for the remote and I had to swipe to the next page to get to that button. The channel button was there, but I cant think of the last time I traditionally 'surfed' channels with the channel up/down button. It would be nice if you could customize the button layouts or at the very least if there was a slightly more intelligent layout to those buttons based on your activity. IE: for a Tivo I would want to at least see the guide button, Tivo button and the colored buttons (for things like commercial skip and basic Tivo control). Overall it's a pretty slick design. I thought it would be annoying to tap buttons on a screen, but it really isn't bad, likely because it is so narrow. I can forsee this becoming a pretty cool device when additional devices and features are added.

    Battery

I have had multiple harmony remotes over the years so I compare any new remotes to them. This remote was easy to setup and one positive over the Harmony remote I also have in another room is the ability to update/modify the remote from the app on my phone. The hassle with Harmony having to make changes from my PC was something I was not fond of and like the ease of the Sevenhugs app. The biggest complaints I have about this remote are the size and battery life. I have larger hands but not banana hands and it is so small I feel like I may break it and it does make pressing buttons on screen a challenge at times. The battery life is also not what I would expect and has to be charged daily if not kept on the base station when not in use. The feature using the sensors is pretty cool I have to say that allows you to point at certain devices in a room. I have it in my bedroom with a 4K TV, XBOX One X, AT&T Uverse Box, and a wireless light adapter from TP-Link. When I point the remote at the lights it gives me the control for the lights. When I point ar the TV it gives me the controls for the TV. I was able to create a scene that automatically turns on the TV and then either XBOX if I want to game or Uverse box when I just want to watch TV. One shortcoming which has a few upvotes on their forums is a screen with favorites buttons like my Harmony has. I use that feature more than just about anything else on my Harmony so I feel a large void with this remote and software not having the same feature when Logitech has had it for years. Overall the remote works as advertised but understand how small it is and also some of the limitations with its functionality which could be easily remedied with software updates.

      Hey Shaun,

First we would like to thank you for the review and feedback. The size of the remote is something that we deliberated a lot on internally and we felt like the size we eventually went for would universally suit a lot of users who make use of Smart devices as it resembles the size of a thinner mobile phone. However we do have newer versions of the Smart Remote coming out later on this year which could feature different sizes and models.

With regards to the battery life, our Smart Remote is a touchscreen universal remote that will tend to consume more battery than a normal remote and will need to be charged more often. We are working constantly to make improvements on this, we already have some features to improve this such as “Auto wifi off” and more will be released soon..

With regards to the favourite button feature, this is indeed one of our planned features from the start and still currently undergoing integration testing, we plan integration for this during Q1 2019 so please stay tuned.it should be live at some point during Q1 2019 so please stay tuned.

For anything else we can assist you with please do not hesitate to go over to our support website at https://support.sevenhugs.com/ and contact a member of our support team, we would be more than happy to assist you with anything you may need. Sevenhugs

I’ve had both of Logitech’s best remotes over the last 5yrs... the Harmony Elite and Ultimate. Sevenhugs ability to be customized on a decent sized touchscreen made all the difference. I can control my TV, cable, soundbar, Blu-ray, Apple TV, and Nvidia Shield without even using the included hubs. Finally I was able to declutter my living room.
