Great time saver
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I love this vacuum. I have two boys, two cats and we use a wood stove to heat our house in the winter. Someone in the family is always sweeping up, whether it is after a meal, coming in after playing outside, dry cat food or wood and ash debris on the floor. The cleaner comes with a remote that can be programed to have the robot start at a certain time of the day. We have set the timer for the morning and I am no longer coming home to a mess. We run the vacuum one more time at night and it is clean again. The first time we ran the vacuum it took about 45 minutes to do our first floor (about 800 sq. feet). We have one carpeted area, linoleum, tile and a wood floor. The vacuum was able to make it over the various heights with no problem. Each time we use it, the vacuum takes less time and it is closer to 30 minutes. The ION has great sensors. After it has learned our rooms, it rarely bumps into walls, door frames or baseboards. The ION navigated around corners, doors, chair feet, and bar-stool legs without any problems. We can now finally vacuum under our beds on a regular basis. Cleanup is easy too, you will be amazed at how much debris and fine dust it collects in the dirt container. They also have something called BotBoundary which you can put in front of a door way and the ION will not go past that. Charging time is good and takes about 3 hours on the first charge and lasts for about an hour and a half. The only cons for the ION was that you have to program each day for your start time, but it is very easy to do. The ION is also much quieter than a regular vacuum. If you are looking to reduce a daily chore and have your vacuum go where you usually can’t go, I would recommend the ION.

Excellent Performance. Quieter than Roomba!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have had great experience with Shark cleaning products and was waiting for a robotic vacuum to be released...the day has come. The ION 720 is amazingly very quiet for a robotic vacuum. I often do not realize it is on which is great for when I am listening to music or watching TV. It is easily the quietest robo vacuum I have ever used so that is a big plus for me and it does not disturb our pets. It cleans my carpets and tile floors efficiently and does a good job of suctioning. The Roomba I used before probably had better suctioning ability but this Shark does a bang up job as well if not exactly an equal one. We have cats at home so there is cat hair all over the place and it requires daily vacuuming. The RV720 does a very good job of picking up all the hair and it is making me forget there was hair in the first place. Side brushes allows cleaning close to walls. The remote is very easy to use and allows scheduled cleaning setup, pausing, starting, and return to the charging station. I do wish the remote would allow direct manual driving of the vacuum so I can vacuum over a specific area if I wanted on demand. Overall the vacuum does a splendid job of cleaning my house and it does a terrific job picking up pet hair, litter, food particles among other things. It is on the pricier side but I have come to trust Shark products as their quality and durability have been great for me personally over the years. Add this Shark ION 720 onto that list.

Raj is great
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My wife named the vac Raj the Robot (Big Bang theory fans will get it). She is very pleased with the performance. Some items do give him problems (electrical cords, rug tassels, etc.), but he gets under most furniture and does a does a good job of cleaning.

Another good Shark product
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a pretty good robotic vacuum that has some limitations. It ran very quietly, more so than a standard vacuum but average for a robotic one. It picked up dog hair and dirt very well on both my hardwood and carpeted areas. I ran an upright vacuum in the same area just after this unit had swept it, and there wasn't much that it missed. It has a handy remote that can be used to schedule a cleaning time, start cleaning right away, spot clean or return it to the charging station. It weighs about 5 pounds. It included a virtual barrier that worked well. It has the typical side brushes so that it cleans up close to walls and furniture. An extra set of side brushes is included. It charged in under 3 hours. The size of the dirt cup is average for a robotic vacuum. I did find some drawbacks. I found that it seemed to have some pathfinding/obstacle issues. In a room with no obstacles, it swept in a strange pattern that left some small parts of the room unswept. In another room with obstacles, it didn't seem to find the best way around some bench legs, again leaving some of the floor unswept. It didn't do well with a light area rug but that is fairly typical. Overall, this is a pretty good robotic vacuum that I would recommend for homes with fairly open floorplans. Due to the remote, this vacuum would be nice for a person that has difficulties with the weight of uprights or with pulling canister vaccums.

I am no longer jealous of the Jetsons
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Shark ION ROBOT 720 may be my new favorite household item, EVER! This may be the quietest vacuum ever produced. Now, this is not meant for deep carpet vacuuming, it is for nightly top coat pickup. This does an amazing job. Every night before bed now, I pick up anything big that may have fallen on the floor, like paper or crayons from my kids. Then, at 2 am, the magic happens. The ION cleans my entire 1st floor while we sleep, and we hear nothing. The canister is large enough for 3 large rooms, possibly 4, and is easy to empty. The scheduled cleaning is the greatest part of this vacuum, period! Also, the self docking for recharge is smart, I still can't believe it knows where to find it. Also, it is smarter than most adults. I setup an slalom of chairs and it was able to get under them all and not get suck, it just keeps turning and changing angles until it is free. I will now be a robot vacuum owner for life, everyone needs one, especially a pet owner. Positives: Quiet Quick Smart Easy to clean Scheduled Cleaning Tough Just plain cool Negatives: NONE!! I recommend the Shark ION to everyone, period!

A strict upgrade over the Roomba 595
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've had a Roomba 595 (pet edition) for the past few years, and recently needed to replace the battery, brushes, and filters. Despite all of these parts being new, the Shark runs longer, quieter, and cleans better. The Shark seems to be better in every way with respect to cleaning. The main difference between the devices is that Roomba can be scheduled directly on the vacuum itself. With the Shark, you have an added small remote to set the schedule. This is a small remote, which I fear can be lost rather easily. However, if you have a couch or end-table with enough clearance, you could set the Shark's dock underneath and out of sight. This is a minor trade-off, but something to think about if you are organized enough to keep track of the remote, and have a place to keep the Shark out of sight when not in use. In total, the Shark is very similar to my older Roomba, but seems better at cleaning. Using a remote to program it is a minor difference which does allow for a wider variety of dock-placement options.

Improves with use
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have been using a Bissell robot vacuum for several years now and it was time to test something new. There was nothing wrong with the Bissell, but I had a chance to test something two years newer and I wanted to see if this meant anything. The instructions for this were very clear. I recommend charging this overnight. First use, I was a bit underwhelmed - it only ran for about an hour and then docked itself to charge and its cleaning was varied and it did not go up against the baseboards like my Bissell does. Second use was where things improved - lasted over 2 hours and was much more thorough this time around. It really cleans as its brush and capacity in the debris container seems much larger than the Bissell. This unit after the second test is a great product. It really is worth purchasing and using the remote feature is an added bonus - you can tell it when to run and it will follow the schedule you set. I let it do my house while I was at work. Simply works!

Manage your expectations going into this.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I started to write an absolutely scathing review for this vacuum, but I tried it some more; and I’ve warmed up to it some. This was my very first robot vacuum, and I had completely unrealistic expectations going into this. I figured that the technology had come along enough that between a vast array of sensors and machine learning, a robot vacuum would be able to smoothly navigate a complex room layout and avoid obstacles. I was wrong. Right off the bat, the instructions tell you to remove any cords, pet toys, drapes, and any other small objects from the area to be cleaned. In short, spend a day cleaning prior to letting the vacuum clean. I had no idea how many cords I had in my apartment until I tried robo-proofing my living room. A human will either avoid a cord running to a fan or lamp or pick it up and move it temporarily. A robot vacuum will run right over it and try to suck it up. Even after spending a day cleaning, the robot still managed to find cords that I’d forgotten about or thought were out of the way enough not to be a problem. The dock requires three feet of clearance along the left, three feet of clearance along the right (effectively seven feet total once you factor in the width of the dock itself), and five feet of clearance dead ahead. If you have that kind of free space in your living area, you’re doing much better than myself. Fortunately, it also comes with a more traditional charging cable if you don’t want to use the dock. As far as that whole “machine learning” thing that I’d been counting on? Yeah, not so much. The robot managed to repeatedly collide with the base of my patio door a half dozen times in rapid succession. I have a six inch step leading up to my patio door. The robot hit it, backed up a foot, turned a few degrees, accelerated, and hit it again. It also successfully ran over my foot, climbed onto the base of my cat condo and got stuck, slid under my couch and got stuck (and then ran away from me as I tried to fish it out), and played a game of chicken with my poor cat. The robot came with one long strip of “don’t go here” material. I didn’t measure it, but if I had to guess, I’d say that it’s about 8 feet or so long. It’s not nearly enough. The guide tells you to put it around pieces of furniture where the robot might get stuck (in my case this was my couch, my cat condo, my end tables, and my TV stand) and along any doorways that you don’t want it entering (in my case my kitchen, bathroom, and entryway. The strip can be cut down to a minimum of 18” to still be effective. How well did it clean you ask? The side brushes successfully found dust bunnies that were hidden in the crevasses along my walls, . . . and it kicked them toward the center of the room where it proceeded to ignore them. To be fair, areas that it did manage to roll over seem quite clean. You’d think after all of this that I’d hate this device. I’ll confess, the first day after getting it, I did. That’s when I started getting creative with moving my furniture and using the “don’t go here strip.” I gave up any pretense of using this vacuum with my standard room layout. Instead, I shoved as much of my furniture against one wall as I could, unplugged everything, and angled the “don’t go here” strip to limit the vacuum to just one section of my living room. I then let it run while I went about my other daily chores and activities. And you know what? It didn’t do a bad job. While I can’t imagine ever being able to allow this vacuum to manage itself and run on any kind of schedule, I can see using it as an aid when I’m looking to multi-task my cleaning efforts. Granted, it’s like a hyperactive toddler (I don’t feel comfortable allowing it to run unsupervised), but I can actually see a use case for this. Perhaps in an office environment with a rigid cubicle layout, abundant floor space, and ample cable management; this device would truly come into its own. For me though, it will be a useful aid when I want to vacuum but have forty other things that I need to do at the same time.

Quiet and surprisingly effective
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is the first Roomba-style vacuum I've had. I wasn't quite sure what to expect, so it's been a fascinating gadget to watch and find the most effect use pattern for. It won't replace the need for a traditional vacuum, but after seeing (and hearing) the Shark Ion in action, I'm actually fairly impressed. There is very little assembly required - just attach the brushes and find a place to set up the base. Shark includes some spare brushes, but they of course recommend replacing them regularly. Finding an ideal spot to locate the dock was actually a bit tricky, as Shark recommends having a good deal of clearance from furniture. In fact, my fiancée and I are still talking about potentially better locations. Triggering it to clean is really easy. The unit has buttons right on it, as well as a small remote control that can be used. Besides telling it to clean immediately, the remote can be used to set a schedule for the Ion to wake up and clean automatically. That process is pretty easy, and as a nice touch, Shark printed the directions on the remote itself (no need to go hunting for the manual well into the future if you feel like rescheduling it). When you manually initiate a cleaning, the Shark runs for an hour before returning to its base. There is a button to command it to go back to its base, though it appears that if it's not in immediate proximity it may take some time for it to wander around before actually returning to the base. In operation, it was unexpectedly quiet. (I guess that shouldn't be surprising after all, due to its size relative to other vacuums.) It was quiet enough that I didn't find it too distracting to have running while reading or watching TV. "Wandering" is the best description I can think of for how it behaves - it seems to move pretty randomly, bumping around and changing direction. There is some pattern to its movements, but it seems quite random. Of course, the control algorithms at work may just be quite sophisticated, or perhaps it will prove to "learn" over time as we use it more. It does sometimes find it's way into corners or behind furniture and spend quite some time bumping around looking for a way out. I helped it once, but since then it's always managed to eventually find a way out on its own. (I suspect it would have the first time as well, if I hadn't intervened.) Despite the low noise and inscrutable movement patterns, it seems to pick up quite a bit of dust. That may be partly because it readily goes in areas underneath furniture with enough clearance, including sofas and beds, that don't get regularly vacuumed. The job it does on those hard to reach places may alone be the worth the price. If you want to keep your Ion's travels contained, or cordon off fragile things that you do not wish to be bumped into, Shark included a long strip of magnetic material that can be cut up and laid down. We have not used this yet, but it's good to know the option is there and that the vacuum has sufficient obstacle avoidance on its own. Of course, having to lay these strips down as needed before each vacuuming cycle does defeat a bit the purpose of having a theoretically hands-off robotic vacuum in the first place. Finally, the Ion does require its share of maintenance. Besides emptying the dust chamber each time, Shark does recommend frequently checking for and cleaning out the roller, front wheel, and brushes. So, it is important to remember the schedule on which your Ion is running so that you can tend to this. I can see it being easy to forget to do this if nobody is at home to see it running and be reminded. Overall, I can't say the Shark Ion is a life-changing device but it is a intriguing one. It wanders and bumps around as it does its job, and requires a bit of careful initial placement for its dock in addition to a slate of regular maintenance. But it's quiet, and wonderfully effective at cleaning under furniture that would otherwise probably not get cleaned frequently due to the hassle of moving it. It didn't make me feel like it's time to retire the DuoClean, but it has its uses and is a fine first entry from Shark into the robotic vacuum market.

Good Vacuum, Wished it had an App for Phone
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. What's Included --------------- Charging dock Cleaning tool Four side brushes (2 of them are extras) Remote control Shark ION ROBOT 720 Two filters Build Quality -------------- As with any shark vacuum , i have another upright one, Shark vacuums are always at the top in terms of build quality, it will survive a few drops (Although the sensors will not let it drop) Functionality ------------- As long as you assume that the robo vacuums are not meant for high pile carpets, you should be fairly happy with the performance. Now, with that being said, I use this at my first floor. My house is 50% tile and wood. It is also at different levels which means i am actually testing the bot's ability not to fall to the next level but also clean diffrent floor types. I have to say that i was imp oressed with the cleaning ability. I did not quite follow the path it takes but it did some of the areas multiple times whereas other areas were done once. The scheduling is done via the provided remote control although i would love to control via smart phone rather than another remote which i need to make sure not to lose. It also has a brush to clean the filter. it also has a tape you can use to mark an area as "KEEP OUT" as the unit won't cross the tape. It also comes with a spare set of brush just incase. What's would make it a 5 * -------------------------- Wifi and smartphone integration which this model does not have and the Deebot M81 has it at almost the same price.

Incredible gadget for effortless routine upkeep
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Out of the box, the Shark Ion Robot seems a little overwhelming if you have no prior experience with a robotic household appliance. However, the quick start guide and the user’s manual do a great job of guiding you through the ins and outs of the device. At first, I was unsure of how a robotic vacuum would fair in a small, 750 sq ft apartment with an open concept. My biggest concern was the tight angles and obstacles like furniture lining the walls. After quickly assembling the vacuum and programming the remote, I decided to try out a location that the docking station would be suitable for. Again, in a smaller apartment, this was a challenge as the directions suggest that the docking station have a three foot radius on either side, and a five foot clearance in front of it. The unit struggled a little bit to get out of tighter areas such as hallways, and a pantry nook on the first few goes. However, after a day of allowing it to “roam” the area it seemed to learn earth individual space in the apartment and was able to master covering the entire surface of each in a few passes. After it’s first full sweep, the removable dustbin was surprisingly full of dirt and debris that I didn’t even realize was covering my floors! I use a Dyson upright vacuum about once a week to maintain the cleanliness of the apartment, but clearly that simply is not enough. The Ion Robot will be a lifesaver in keeping up with dust and dirt that gets tracked in and out of the apartment on a daily basis. On day two of using the Ion Robot, it was able to clean the entirety of the apartment in the time it took to shower and dress in the morning. It was also able to dock itself on command in under 20 seconds on the first attempt. I have yet to test out the scheduled cleaning, but trust that the device would do well to clean the apartment on its own while I’m away at work, or asleep at night. And yes, it is quiet enough to have cleaning while you’re asleep! Cleaning the device seems straightforward and easy to do. There is a HEPA filter included that should be replaced on a regular basis (after a few months of use). I would recommend this product to anybody that doesn’t have a ton of time to be cleaning throughout the week. It seems to cut down on the dirt and debris that we track in and out of our living spaces on a daily basis pretty drastically, and will prevent me from having to do a deep clean as often as I once had been doing. All in all, this product is somewhat of a technological marvel!

Fun for the family
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Out of the box, there is the vacuum and a docking station with the cord. This product is definitely fun for the whole family! For starters, the process of starting up the vacuum is very simple. Simply press the clean button and the vacuum will promptly begin navigating its way around the room it has been put in. It then begins teaching itself the layout of the room, stopping whenever it comes to a wall and/or leg of furniture. As it learns the room it also cleans and pick up all dirt and any other objects beneath it (therefore do not leave any loose cords, or objects too large to be sucked up by the vacuum.) Another option is the Selection "Spot". As you press this button the vacuum chimes a short tune before beginning to clean the area in an about two foot radius of the vacuum. You can also press spot while it is cleaning just in case the area is has passed through is still dirty. When you want it to return to the docking station, simply press the dock button and it will eventually get back to its dock. Please keep in mind that it remembers where its supposed to go, so don't touch it or it will take a little longer for the vacuum to realize which area of the room it is in before it can re-dock. This may result in the vacuum dying before it reaches the dock, which is fine because you can just place it back on the dock to begin charging again. For the moms - This is an excellent companion to purchase for your household, I especially recommend this for the on-the-go mothers. The ION Robot cleans for you with the simple press of a button. For the kids - It's a quite entertaining process to watch as it makes its way around your home and cleans up messes. Its pretty cool to watch it bump into things and turn as it makes its way around the room. There are also cool sounds on specific button options and it plays a medley when it is back on the dock. For the Dads - No more remembering to plug this thing up. When the battery is low it will automatically go back to the docking station to charge. There are no real downsides to this product but I would recommend closing the door or putting up a gate if you have a big open floor plan. My living room, dining room and kitchen are all combined and it basically went from one room to the other. Not really a downfall to me because the battery is pretty good but when I pressed the dock button from the other room, it took a while for it to get back. Would I buy again? Yes! Would I buy or recommend to a friend or family? Absolutely.
