Since working from home for over a year now due to COVID, I've invested in better quality gear for my home office. I've also started creating content for LinkedIn, YouTube, and other platforms. So I needed to get a microphone that could work as a desktop microphone, but I also wanted something that was able to plug into a sound board via an XLR cable because I might end up picking up one down the road - so I wanted a "future proof" microphone.
A buddy of mine who also hosts his own podcast series recommended the Shure brand because that's what he uses, so when I saw that Shure had the MV7 that could connect via XLR or USB, I picked it up. The MV7 also features capacitive touch controls on the device for gain level and muting. There's also an AUX port available for connecting headphone to monitor the sound quality.
The microphone itself is designed to be attached to either a tripod stand, or a boom-type arm. Right now, I'm using a stand for it on my desktop until I find an arm that I like. It's important to note that the MV7 does not come with a stand on it's own - so make sure you have one ready to go or plan to get one before using it.
As far as cables, it's nice because the MV7 comes with 2 cables: a MicroUSB-to-USB-A and a MicroUSB-to-USB-C for connecting to a computer. I was pleasantly surprised because it's been my experience that most devices like this come with one type of cable and it's on you to figure out how to connect it.
The sound quality of the microphone is excellent. I've had people on Zoom and Teams calls remark how much clearer I sound versus using the built-in microphone on my laptop. I've recorded audio segments, speaking naturally and I've been impressed with how well they sound and how much background / white noise is reduced or eliminated.
The MV7 also has some accompanying desktop software to adjust the sound quality, but I found that I could leave it on the auto settings, you can see those in the images I uploaded. I really like the Shure MV7, it feels solid from a build quality perspective, can connect to Mac / PC or mixing board, and is also small enough that you can take it on the go if needed.

Terrific Microphone

I always think it’s helpful to explain why/how I use a particular product to help explain my perspective. I’m a legal professional who conducts a lot of business over Zoom, and I create Presentations and videos used as exhibits. These tasks require me to have great sound. So while I’m not recording music or creating a podcast, I still rely on high end audio products (and other things) to create high end material. With that being said, the Shure microphone has been a significant upgrade to the microphone built into my Logitech webcam. I’m no audio engineer or otherwise audio professional so keep that in mind. I’m generally speaking to those like me with limited to no knowledge in microphones.
IN THE BOX
You will find the microphone, a mini-USB to USB-A cable as well as a mini-USB to USB-C cable. What it doesn’t have, and this is important to first time microphone buyers, is a stand. It does have an XLR output for those who want to record in analog.
SETUP
In terms of plugging it into your computer, it’s straightforward. (I don’t have the necessary equipment to use the XLR output, so I’m not mentioning it here). Your computer should recognize it immediately. You can visit the Shure website to download their MOTIV software, which gives you “advanced” controls.
The more important thing to remember in the setup, is that you’ll need either a table/desk stand or boom arm. I actually went with a boom arm because I don’t use my microphone everyday and the arm keeps it at the ready, but also out of the way. And I kind of like having it on my desk for the aesthetics. You can purchase either option at Shure, or Amazon. The stand or boom arm isn’t expensive.
There is also a headphone output. For those that don’t know, you can plug in a set of headphones so you can hear yourself talk (as well as the background audio, i.e. hearing someone else talk on a Zoom call). That allows you to know how loud, or how clear, your voice is or isn’t.
CONTROLS
The controls are touch sensitive. I’m not a huge fan, but they certainly work fine. I just like the tactics of physical buttons. But that’s an extremely minor issue. Once the microphone is tuned, via the Shure desktop software or otherwise, there’s really not a reason to use them other than mute. But the controls are volume and gain. You have to hit a microphone/headphone button to toggle between which setting the slider controls. Other than that, there’s no other buttons. (which isn’t a bad thing, this microphone looks slick and professional).
DESKTOP SOFTWARE
The Shure software itself is pretty bare bones. It’s software that runs in the background. It has natural presets like mic position (near or far), adjusting the monitoring mix (whether your voice or the playback sounds is louder in your headphones) and dark natural or bright tones. There’s also manual settings, but there’s not much there to control. There is a mic gain slider, EQs, limiter toggle button and compressor buttons. Frankly, for me, a newbie to professional microphones, these settings didn’t matter to me (at least not yet).
PERFORMANCE
As I mentioned before, I’m a legal professional. Court hearings, calls with clients, etc. have all been held over Zoom. My ability to be heard and sound great is a priority. This microphone fits the bill. I’ve literally gotten compliments about how well I sound. That’s a testament to this microphone. I’ve also used it to record narrations for legal videos. I went from sounding like I was recording a voice with the wind blowing to documentary level sound (I’m speaking in relative terms here, I’m by no means a documentary film maker).
EDITING
I’ve used Audacity to narrate over background music. I’ve also used this microphone to record narrations directly into Adobe Premiere, with the latter being my preferred choice to ease of use. But using this microphone was dead simple with Audacity. My only concern was that when I plugged the microphone in, after Audacity was opened. It didn’t seem to recognize it. But once I restarted the application it worked every time. It’s not been an issue since, since I leave it plugged in the whole time.
CONCLUSION
If you care about the quality of your virtual conference calls or have ambitions to create your own podcast (or narrate stories), this Shure microphone should be high on your list. The microphone itself is built extremely well, it has the flexibility of having an XLR output (in case you either have or later upgrade to a mixing board) and sounds fantastic. I highly recommend it if you’re in the market for a new computer microphone. It will greatly enhance your presentations/talks/conversations, etc.

Legendary Dynamic USB Microphone

The Shure MV7 Dynamic Cardioid USB Microphone is well designed with a lot of great features discussed below.
Pros:
*Sleek quality design - The microphone is well made and looks great. It is attached to a yoke and ready to go out of the box. Simply attach it to a microphone mount of your choice and plug in the USB or connect a XLR cable to use a mixer/audio interface.
* Voice isolation technology - The microphone is able to isolate the users voice so speech is crisp/clear while rejecting unwanted background noise. This is one of the main benefits of upgrading to a dynamic microphone over a condenser microphone. I have received many compliments from those who have listened to recordings using this microphone or heard me talk on Discord. Shure did a great job making the MV7 a top contender in its class/price range. The MV7 is designed for the individual looking to take the jump into the tier of professional level home microphones while maintaining an affordable price point.
* USB and XLR connections - It is nice to see both connection types included in the design. The microphone can be connected to a large variety of devices via USB. When connected to a PC/mobile, the user has access to the ShurePlus MOTIV app discussed below. XLR can be used to connect it to a mixer/audio interface.
* ShurePlus MOTIV app - A very intuitive and easy to use app. It offers an auto level mode which has a few customization options including microphone placement (near or far) and tone (dark, natural, bright). Think of this as the "plug and play" mode. It also has a manual mode for fine tuning. Manual mode has many features such as an EQ setting (flat, high pass, presence boost, and high pass & presence boost), compressor (off, light, medium, and heavy), limiter, microphone gain, monitor mix, and microphone mute. These settings can be saved under a dedicated profile for easy retrieval at a later time.
* Microphone touch panel - This is a nice feature which allows the user to quickly adjust the gain, headphone volume, monitor mix, and mute function. It takes a little practice to get used to the sensitivity of the panel but overall it works great.
Cons:
* Micro-USB connector - It really shouldn't have this. I hope to see future iterations only include the USB-C variant following the evolving USB standards.
Overall, the Shure MV7 is an outstanding microphone with a lot of professional features. I highly recommend this microphone.

Console/PC At The SAME TIME?! Yes.

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
I’m going to start this review of with this: This is NOT a cheaper version of the Shure SM7B. It does not sound anywhere near as good and is a lot cheaper for a reason with a completely different target market and purpose.
So, what is the target market? Streamers, YouTubers, podcasters, vocalists, etc. who are just starting off or those users who want a single microphone that offers the most flexibility by allowing you to use USB, XLR, or both AT THE SAME TIME. The main application that will make this microphone a banger is the ability to use the microphone on your computer to talk to stream while also having it plugged into your PS5 (or Xbox) and talk to game chat/party chat at the same time. No more having two microphones plugged in. It’s also great for those people who need a microphone to travel with. As this will work on an XLR setup or PC by just plugging it in via USB. The build quality and aesthetics are also premium.
I was able to plug this into my PS5 and get it to work via USB. I was also able to plug this into my computer and get it to work either from USB or XLR. Last, I was able to get it to work for USB to PS5 and XLR to PC at the same time and record audio. Which was freaking brilliant I tell you!
To explain further. If you are just starting off and are looking at buying a USB microphone you really shouldn’t look any further. As this microphone provides brilliant sound quality via USB. With the ability to upgrade at a later date to XLR which doesn’t sound any better than the USB counterpart. Which is super impressive as usually USB microphones don’t sound anywhere near as good as an XLR microphone.
But that isn’t to say this microphone is all rainbows. I tested it mostly from an XLR point of view because I already have an Audio Interface and everything you would need for that. As an XLR microphone it performs well but you can buy a lot cheaper microphones that provide just as good or better sound. I found for my voice (which will also play a huge roll in the correct microphone you buy) to not work all that well for this. I have a relatively deep voice with strong Mids. This microphone heavily emphasizes mids and bass which makes me sound muddy and hard to understand. I had to do a lot of tweaking on my audio interface to make it sound what I considered to be good. But once I got that sound on lock things sounded GREAT. Another issue that I ran into was if you are hitting the microphone arm, XLR port, or USB port, that the sound is transferred into the microphone. Which is a bit disappointing at this price point. But otherwise, it did a great job at isolating sound from the sides and when manipulating the microphone itself which you’d expect from a dynamic microphone. Speaking of it being a dynamic microphone the windscreen on it is not the best as they skimped on the padding on the very front which makes plosives (p, s, etc.) kind of harsh. Along with having an extremely strong proximity effect. If you are 2 inches away and then move 1 inch away the volume nearly doubles. So, you need to be highly cognizant of that when doing recordings.
It comes with a USB Micro to USB C or a USB Micro to USB A. It would have been nice to see USB C instead of USB micro. But whatever. Both of those cables are super long so you shouldn’t have too much issue getting the microphone where you want. It does not come with an XLR cable or an actual mount. So you’ll need to buy those separately, especially the mount. Setup is super easy no matter which one you use. The onboard touch controls do not work via XLR but do through USB and they work well. The application that you need to install to get the full use out of the USB connection is also simple to navigate and works well but is not needed.
CONCLUSION:
I absolutely love the flexibility and design of this microphone. As a USB microphone it is an easy recommendation if you can afford it. If you are using it for an XLR microphone I would recommend doing more research on other microphones. If you are trying to capture both PC and console voice at the same time this is probably some of the best you will find which also makes it an easy recommendation. If you are traveling a lot and need a microphone to work on multiple devices it is also a great choice. The only big issue is that this does NOT sound anywhere near as good as the Shure SM7B and should not be compared to it. I found the sound quality for my voice (bass and mid filled) to not be great and often left me unimpressed for the cost. But once I did some dialing in it was a lot better. As the frequency response isn’t terrific especially for the price. It also has a poor mic cover and has a lot of sound transfer when hitting the mic arm or cables. But otherwise does good. I think they are asking a bit too much for this guy. I think 150 – 200 would be a more competitive price. As 250 takes you into another bracket that opens up a lot of possibilities if you know what you are looking for or willing to do your research.

Great mic with USB or XLR

Before using this microphone, my main recording setup involved a Blue Reactor, an AT2020 and a Rode NT1-A that I used sparingly for different applications. My bread and butter interface is a Scarlett Red 18i6 and my preferred audio DAW of choice is Magix Samplitude Pro X5. I’ll use these for reference as I compare this microphone.
The first note when unboxing is the feel. Very sleek and sturdy. Well put together. My Reactor is a powerhouse, but I feel like any mishandling and pieces are coming off. For the inputs, we have micro USB, XLR and a dedicated monitor jack for 3.5mm headphones. On the top is a touch panel that controls the mic level and monitor volume independently of the app, but still syncs onscreen. Just a note, there are two lengthy cables for either standard USB or USB-C.
So, as instructed, the first thing is to download the app. Easy install and instantly pops up waiting for mic input. My first test was with USB. I connected the mic, Windows 10 instantly recognized it and the app immediately picked it up and it was hot. I connected directly to mic monitor and started playing with the settings. I set everything to natural and flat. The first thing to note was the warmth. No tinny highs and muddled lows, just mellow smooth response. I then started playing with the EQ, the Limiter, the Compressor and mix and matching different settings. This produced some great results. Where normally you have to tinker with your plug-ins and interface to achieve these results, they worked fairly well from with the click of the interface. You can hear the distinct differences and I will be able to pick which setting for what application. Before I put this in the DAW, I wanted to test the Auto Level feature. While this would be great for podcasting and audiobooks, having manual control over mic level is a preference for other creative endeavors. That’s not to say it doesn’t work, it works well! You may just have to fine tune some things post recording. What was most impressive was lack of bleeding in from other audio sources. My recording space is not treated, so I rely heavily on timing, mini booths and directional sound to get the best I can. In comparison to my other mics, even with Inputs jacked up, the bleed here, especially with the auto leveling is amazing. For voice over work with ongoing reads, this is paramount if you can’t get to a booth.
Now, with those ‘plosives…P’s didn’t pop, highs stayed manageable and clipping was rare, even without a pop filter or turning on the limiter. Of course that attributes to one’s own vocal qualities, but for me, I usually need a pop filter on the Blue and the AT2020 for general recording, or one or two will undoubtedly slip through.
Now, once inside the DAW, it operated like any other mic. The app interface still allowed on-the-fly modifications while in sessions and I could control additional modifications in the DAW without issue. This is a given, but just confirming if there was any doubt.
Next up, good ole XLR. Once connected to the Scarlett, I turned on the needed Phantom Power and was met with the same warmth the USB provided. Though the app is no longer useable once connected to the XLR, the mic still rivals all other mics in my arsenal. Great, natural warm vocals. I have used several Shure mics in my years, so this is no surprise.
This mics size compared to my Reactor, its minimal setup compared to my AT2020 and Rode, I may just leave this one in the stand as I do feel with the custom settings, I can match all of the other mics Maybe not perfectly, but enough to give me what I need. Whether streaming, podcasting or laying some vocals, this is definitely a favored recommendation.

My New Mic of Choice!
|
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
--- SETUP ---
The setup of the Shure MV7 mic was quick and easy. In the box, you get the most basic things that you need to get up and running, the Shure Mic and two cables, one that’s USB to micro USB and one that is USB to USB-C. It can also be connected with an XLR cable, but that’s not included in the box.
--- FEATURES ---
The key features for this microphone include auto-adjust levels when using the software and a USB connection and buttons on the mic to raise/lower volume for sound mic monitoring settings. You also have two removable screws if you plan on using it as a podcast mic and need to install it on a table stand, though the stand is not included.
--- PERFORMANCE ---
The performance of this microphone is a big jump from my previous USB only microphone. I tested this on my digital audio workstation of choice, Cakewalk. I really enjoyed the quality of sound that I got back when compared to my older mic, which is of similar price range. Of course, I wanted to get feedback from my viewers, so I decided to run the mic through OBS and stream a game while using the mic. Some of my loyal fanbase pointed out that I sounded different. I asked them if this was different in a good way or different in a bad way? I’m glad they said that my voice was more crisp and clear. I then revealed the mic to be a Shure MV7. In fact, I have a fan that likes to make content of my streams. She sent me a video of a stream I made a week prior to owning this mic with my intro (which I repeat mostly the same words) and the stream that used the Shure MV7 mic. I was clearly able to hear what my fans hear, a lot of background airy noise with my old mic and a clear sound with my Shure.
--- EXPECTATIONS ---
The product exceeds my expectations. I was really stunned by the ability to auto-adjust levels when downloading the free Shure software Motive Desktop. In the Motive app, under the auto section, you can select whether you have the mic near or far, have a dark, natural, or bright tone, and create presets for various projects. Though you do have the option to manually tweak the settings, I decided to leave it on auto so that, as the manual says, I can focus on my project and not the mic. It adjusted the levels so well that on my livestream, it wasn’t noticeable that I forgot to turn off the sound from my laptop. Where with my older mic, on the livestream I would have sounded like I had an echo or was saying everything twice, the Shure mic did a good job at not duplicating the sound. I’m starting my second podcast this summer, and of the three mics that I own, this one is now the chosen one to run with that new project.
--- VALUE ---
The price for the Mic in terms of value is on par with others, but the auto-adjust is just so magical and the flexibility to use it as a USB and an XLR mic make this a sure choice, no pun intended.
--- APPROVAL ---
I highly recommend this product for people who have podcasts, are musicians, or stream any kind of content online.

Outstanding Sound! Excellent USB/XLR microphone!

I have been looking for USB based mic for recording and streaming instead of XLR type mics. I have tried various models and there were some limitations. Shure is known for making excellent mics and got Shure MV7. It came with Shure MOTIV MV7 Podcast Microphone, 10 ft (3m) USB-A cable, 10 ft (3m) USB-C cable, and a quick manual. It has a dual USB/XLR output that allows digital or analog recording. Setup is relatively easy. I have connected MV7 via USB-C cable to MacBook Pro and it recognized without any issues and it is recommended to download the ShurePlus Motiv Desktop application to configure the mic settings and perform the firmware update. ShurePlus Motiv Desktop will allow adjusting mic gain, monitor mix, EQ, limiter, compressor, and the option of enabling Auto Level Mode. With the Motiv application, presets can be saved depending upon the recording environment. All settings are saved in the mic and it allowed me to use the mics in windows PC, MacBook Pro, and android tablets.
Build quality is great and it has a touch panel on the microphone itself to control microphone gain, headphone level, monitor mix, mute, and settings lock which is really cool instead of standard buttons in other mics. After the initial setup, I made a test voice call with zoom and Microsoft teams and my voice sounded so good on the recording without making any adjustments. I have tried auto mode in the Motiv app and it worked really well in most situations. However, I have turned off the Auto mode setting to allow manual adjustments to fit my recording needs. MV7 is available in two colors Black finish and silver. I have downloaded the Motiv app on the Samsung S7+ tablet and connected MV7 using a USB C cable and tried Smule singing app. The Voice-Isolating Technology works really well and provided rich sound quality.
The recording quality is exceeded my expectation. For recording and podcast, I have configured MV7 connected with Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 to have more controls that are connected to a pair of HS8 studio speakers with Garageband to do the post-processing. I have connected SM58 using XLR cable to try out the quality using XLR and the sound quality is the same. There is no mic stand provided on the box and I was able to use my existing mic stand. MV7 uses a micro-USB connection to the mic on USB-A and USB-C conversion cables. Now, all devices are using USB-C to USB-C, it could have been much better designed using USB-C to USB-C. The micro-USB port in USB is kind of fragile on the mic. I have been using MV7 for all my recordings and video calls. Shure MV7 exceeded my expectation due to quality build, design, and sound quality. If you are looking for a mic for excellent sound quality, Shure MV7 will be the perfect choice for content creators, gamers, podcasters, and streamers.

This is my first shure mic. It was an easy plug and play to my Microsoft 10 usb. Nothing to download. Joined a zoom and picked this mix for sound.
Cons: you will need a mic mount or you can hold it. You will need to be 2” or less away from the mic for the best sound. That’s close if you don’t want the mic in the picture.
Pros: the sound is perfect. The install is seemless.

I bought this mic for my son, who wanted to start dabbling into music, etc. I was looking at the Yetis but Shure has been in the microphone business for a long time so I was confident it wont be a mistake. My son loves this mic. The sound is very nice and sounds professional. Very easy to connect and use. I like the fact that it can be connected by usb and xlr. If you're looking for a pro grade mic that is not too crazy expensive, this is a winner!

SM7B quality in a Dual Interface Mic.

Let me preface this by saying, no, this mic isn't identical to the SM7B. The SM7B still produces those radio quality lows very few mics are capable of without extensive EQ work. With that said, the MV7 is about as close as it gets, and it's definitely the best USB mic in terms of audio reproduction that I've ever had.
If you're like me, you've spent far too much money testing oodles of USB mics, searching for one capable of producing great audio (without having to use post production) to just save the hassle of running more devices and using XLR in order to live stream. I've been through a plethora of Audio Technica Models, a couple Samson's, MXL's, Blue's etc. None of them were capable of producing the LIVE audio this mic does via USB.
This is where this mic wins big-time. No more running 3rd party software to live tune your USB mics. The included Shure software utility is admittedly a bit light on available settings, but it does exactly what it needs to, allows you to tune the MV7 to your needs or surroundings(and is extremely light on resources).
Admittedly, after my last Mic purchase, I'd given up on getting actual GREAT audio out of the USB interface altogether. I was ready to pull the trigger on a new SM7B and XLR interface when I found this gem while shopping.
Yes, the price is noticeably higher than it's USB competitors, but it also features the option of using either USB or XLR interface, and that's what REALLY sold me. I had the option to go with a mixer if I wasn't happy with the USB results.
Needless to say, I'm thrilled with how this mic performs. Accurate sound repro, lows are nice and low, but still tight and not distorted. Plenty of gain available even on USB, and the folks I discord with are much happier listening to this vs my old Samson G track pro I'd been running.

First off, if you're just buying this because it's a cheaper alternative to the sm7b, go for it. It's still a great dynamic mic, still has a built in shock mount, and a decent pop filter. If you enunciate your "p" and "b" a little hard, you can get the RK345 pop filter, which is for the sm7b but does fit the MV7 just fine. Just note, you will need a mic stand or arm to go with this as it doesn't come with one. I traded in the wave 3 for this because it would pick up way too much background noise. Immediately the MV7 was better out of the box on USB, and perfect with some tweaks using voicemeeter. I have not tried the motiv software yet, but overall I'm still very happy with the sound quality.
My main issues would be the cheap feeling micro USB it comes with, and not the best stock pop filter. For $250 you should be getting a thick foam filter out of the box, and at least a sturdy cable.

I have been using condenser mics and interfaces for many years now and the drivers for the interfaces always seem to be finicky causing random issues at times. I was interested in this since it had the ability to do USB or XLR so I could use it with a setup I already had or just plug it in with USB and be done with it.
The mic sounds fantastic for the price and is well made. The software also is clean looking and simple to use. It is also nice having the ability to see if you're peaking, the volume level if you're muted and a direct connection to the headphones to hear yourself when needed.
A few issues though, that with some updates could end up fixed but is present as of now. First, the capacitive touch sometimes doesn't work as expected (like most products that have it). It would have been better to have physical buttons for the features and a dial for the volume control. Second, not sure if it's app-specific, but the volume goes down to almost zero at times, it doesn't happen during any calls or recordings but seems to be linked to restarting the computer, waking from sleep, or opening applications. It does seem that it's happening less so that's why I think it may have a set volume for specific applications (which can be very nice if that's the case but annoying as to not knowing why). Third, the software/mic has frozen on me once but seems to be fixed with patches to the software.
All in all, it's the easiest and best mic I have used around this price point

One of the best microphones for the money. USB and XLR connections available. Great for Zoom, MS Teams an Podcasts. You’re up and running in 5 mins or less. The app allows you to adjust the mic for distance and sensitivity.

Excellent mic. I don't do podcasts or record YouTube videos but purchased this microphone primarily for Zoom calls on a laptop running Windows 10 (and now Windows 11) and it works great. I have been told I sounded much clearer compared to the true wireless earbuds I was using before. App is easy to use (I just use auto level and far mode) and included stand is great, although I do wish it were a little lower in height. However, with my laptop on a riser, the microphone is still just low enough to stay out of frame to the side of the laptop.
If using Zoom on a Windows PC like I am, nake sure you disable Windows sound enhancements in the device settings as well as as any volume adjustments in Zoom. This helped with the mic quality.

Superb sound with the versatility of XLR or USB, for half the price of a SM7B that is XLR only. The included mini tripod is a great addition for the budget customer. Very sturdy.

I’m using usb at the moment. Soon I’ll be using the xlr port so I have more control over how I sound. Overall, best mic I’ve ever had thus far. I started w a blue snow ball, to a blue yeti, to a hyperx quadcast. Overtime I learned condenser mics aren’t the move for me when it boils down to streaming and voice acting. I highly recommend this IF you don’t want to use plugins to quiet your background and not blow out someone ears when you raise your voice.

Easy to use & great sound quality for my podcast! “Ur Literally So Annoying” on Spotify & Apple Podcast. For the price, it is a really good mic! No complaints
