A DIY Security System Dream
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.SimpliSafe is the ultimate DIY home security system. You are in control of how you monitor your home and how much or how little assistance from SimpliSafe, by way of sensors/cameras and monitoring you would like to have. Setting up the system is ridiculously easy. You create an account in the SimpliSafe app, then power on you base station. The base station comes with battery backup in case of a power outage, and also comes with cellular backup, to dial out to their monitoring service. Once the base station is fully powered on and ready, you start adding your accessories. This is where SimpliSafe really shines to me. They offer just about any sensor type you could imagine, and compared to other full service, semi or even fully DIY systems, they are so much more affordable. You start with the keypad, it comes preassigned to your base station, so once it’s powered on, it auto connects, nothing to do. Then in the app, you can start adding your included sensors. Go into Device Settings and click on the type of sensor you are adding, push the button on the sensor to put it in pairing mode, and it’s recognized by your base station with a audible verbal alert. You can then name the sensor with default labels from the app, or call it something unique to your situation or location. You can also then manage if the sensor trigger an instant alarm, and how it should behave in your different armed settings – Off, Home and Away. I’ve found that if you place the base station in a central part of your home, there is no place in my home that I cannot connect a sensor. We have a two story home with basement, about 5K sq feet. Every sensor connected right away, no connection issues at all. One of the hidden features that is such a tremendous option is the ability for the system to configure a Duress pin, and up to 5 additional pin numbers for various family and friends. Your main pin allows you to configure, arm and disarm the system overall. but the Duress pin is such a great feature, if you are being forced to enter a pin into your system, you can enter an alternate pin that will immediately alert the monitoring service so law enforcement can be dispatched without having to contact you. Such a great feature, could save a life. And the ability to have different pins for members of the family or friends, who you trust to arm and disarm the system, but not be able to make changes, is such a great addition as well. If you feel that you would like more sensors than what came in your package, SimpliSafe offers a huge variety, from additional window and door sensors, to motion sensors, and even things like water, glass break, additional sirens, keyfobs and more. You can dial in the sensors that fit your home/lifestyle. If you want sensors on every door and window, you can do that. If you want entry sensors on just the main doors, and motion sensors everywhere else, you can do that. The level of customization and configuration that you can achieve is wonderful. The entry and motion sensors and super responsive, with immediate audile tones when triggered. Motion sensors capture movement from 15’-30’ away, so for large rooms that are ideal. And they have a great field of view, so you can place one in a corner and get coverage across a large area. The cameras are a great addition to the system as well, and both the indoor camera and their new outdoor camera performed very well. The one drawback to the cameras however is you can only live view them when not signed up for monitoring that includes camera storage, or if you don’t sign up for the self monitoring with camera plans. Basically, you get no recorded camera history of any event. Not for 24 hrs back, not for 1 hr back. Nothing. This is something I would seriously think about changing if I were SimpliSafe. To have these cameras added to your security system gives you so much extra piece of mind, but without an option to record events, for any amount of time, without paying another fee to add that, defeats the purpose. Imagine you have your camera set to trigger an alarm, but you get no recorded event of what the camera actually saw. Now with the monitoring plans, the standard plan offers you nothing for camera recordings. The higher tier Interactive plan gives you unlimited recordings for up to 10 cameras. That is such a huge disparity. Nothing on one and everything on the other? Meet us in the middle here SimpliSafe! The camera quality was pleasantly surprising. Both the indoor and outdoor are 1080p, so nothing to yell home about, but the picture quality was very good. The newer outdoor camera actually comes apart, which I was not a fan of. You need to open it up to remove the battery to charge it. Nice if you ever need to replace it at some point, but taking a security camera apart just to charge it seems a bit too outdated to me, and unnecessary. You get a nice 140 degree FOV and it comes with two way audio and even a spotlight for low light situation, which is a great addition. It handles white balance extremely well, I was shocked. Overly bright scenes were tamed and looked really good, compared to other wireless cameras I have. You can enable push notifications for triggered events so you never miss a potential issue, and you can set the camera to trigger the alarm right away. The camera is also an extra alarm siren, which is neat. And I love how SimpliSafe configures their activity zone for determining when to trigger an event. They allow you to tap boxes on a grid that you “don’t” want to capture motion. I love this. Most all other cameras make you select an area that you “do” want to trigger events. I would much prefer to select areas of the camera FOV that I DON’T want alerts or triggers. Love that they included this with the cameras. Their indoor Simplicam, which they ‘ve had for a while now, works great as well. It even has a privacy shutter that covers the lens when not in use, for added piece of mind, but motion can trigger the camera to come to life and open the shutter to start streaming or recording events. The Simplicam also has a verification feature, that if allowed by you, if an alarm is triggered, the monitoring service can see what your camera sees in real time, to help verify to threats and respond that much faster and appropriately. Overall, the system is a DIY dream, I just wish they would allow some form of event recording on their cameras when self monitoring, even if its just the events that triggered an alarm. That way you have something for the authorities in an emergency. I love all the configuration you can perform on the sensors and cameras, and the prices for monitoring and even the camera recording options are very competitive with the market. I’ve not had a single issue with my system and I would recommend it to anyone looking to ditch the more expensive, locked in contracts type of systems.

Outstanding with a Top-Notch User Interface
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.KEY FEATURES Easy to Use and Set-Up 1080p Resolution Cameras Near Infinite Expandability Cellular Backup FIRST IMPRESSIONS My house is an average U.S. spec house, built approximately 6 years ago. Included with the house was your average state-of-the-art security system that has remained relatively unchanged since the late 80's to early 90's. At some point over the past couple of years, the alarm and control board stopped functioning & even after hours of searching online, I was unable to find a compatible replacement for my hard-wired alarm. My only option was contacting a private party or one of the big-name vendors and shell out big bucks for installation & a mandatory monitoring contract. I hoped that there had to be a better option available. Could SimpliSafe really make a superior product to my hard-wired, land line mandatory alarm system? I have installed several different security systems and products over the years. This includes cameras, NVR's, DVR's, setting up user accounts, configuring remote access, configuring alarms, schedules, etc. It has been a learning experience (to put it nicely) to figure out the various systems' nuances and idiosyncrasies. Once I was able to figure the products out, trying to get the spousal acceptance buy-in always seemed to allude me. INITIAL SET-UP Quite honestly, SimpliSafe had an impossible chore of winning me over. No matter what system I've tried, there is always something that does not go just right. Some issues are easier to resolve, while some issues require nothing short of a network engineering degree to remedy. To thoroughly test SimpliSafe's product offering, I used both an Android phone and iPad to configure the user account and set-up the devices. How did SimpliSafe do on their user interface and ease of use and configuration? EXCELLENT!!! The key to the entire system is the SimpliSafe Base Station. About the size of a 1-liter bottle of soda, all devices connect and communicate through the Base Station (along with containing a speaker for audible feedback and the system's siren). The hardest part of the installation was creating your SimpliSafe account. When the most difficult part of your installation is making sure you correctly type your email, THAT'S GREAT!!!! A simple scan of the QR Code on the Base Station starts the process and the rest of the set-up is just as quick and painless. You select what you want to set-up in the app. In the case of the interior camera, the app shows a QR Code that camera scans. The QR Code programs the camera to your account, sets the Wi-Fi, and activates it. The exterior camera is just as easy. Plug in the battery, open the SimpliSafe app, press a button on the camera and the app takes care of the rest (access, Wi-Fi, activation), etc., same with the entry sensors. ABSOLUTELY TOP NOTCH!!! USE As easy as it was to set-up this system, using the app is even easier and more intuitive. A person can view live images from any camera right from the app's main screen, as well as check the status of the system and arm or disarm as needed. Events and motion notifications are very quick to be sent. Much quicker than my MyQ garage notifications and as good as, if not better, than my notifications from my Eufy products. The main reason I have not switched to a wireless home security system in the past is because they rely on your Wi-Fi or ethernet network for communication. Take out a person's home internet and the security system is next to useless as its ties to the home monitoring center and emergency services are severed. It neuters the system and renders it useless. SimpliSafe has addressed this vulnerability by incorporating a pre-installed cellular back-up into the Base Station. Mine came with a Verizon sim pre-installed and upon initial account creation and Base Station activation, the cellular modem phones home with a test message ensuring a quality cellular back-up connection. The entire process is painless, and all takes place behind the scenes without the user needing to do anything. SimpliSafe has created a huge and comprehensive infrastructure for its products. SimpliSafe has nearly any product an end user could need to create a comprehensive home security and monitoring system. Options include: water detectors, temperature sensors, motion sensors, glass break sensors, indoor and outdoor cameras, door locks, sirens, key fobs, panic buttons, keypads, etc. If you need it, SimpliSafe probably makes it and it everything works cohesively with their app and base station. CONS There are only a couple of negatives I can think of. The first is that by default SimpliSafe does not allow for on-device storage of video. Without paying for their service, SimpliSafe cameras will send you a notification of motion, but it will not record that motion. If you do not subscribe to their service, you can log in and view live video from any of the cameras, but you cannot go back and review events. Plans start at $10/month for basic camera recording but does not include any form of security monitoring. Basic monitoring costs 50 cents/day or Interactive monitoring costs 83 cents/day. Interactive Monitoring says that it ensures you get the fastest response time from SimpliSafe operators, as well as allows those operators access to your security feeds to determine if the alarm is legitimate or an accidental trigger. Furthermore, Interactive Monitoring also gives the operators permission to share your video feeds to law enforcement. After using security products from other vendors, I would like to see SimpliSafe offer the ability to locally store motion events on their cameras or Base Station. My Eufy cameras allow this. I like Eufy's business model in that you can either use the device to store and review events or pay for cloud storage for those said events. FINAL THOUGHTS SimpliSafe should be highly commended for their attention to detail and ease of installation and use. The products are smartly packaged, and all documentation is thorough, concise, and detailed. Homeowners are no longer tied to the "Big 3" security system providers. While those folks had the market cornered for years, they need to take notice and I'm sure more than one CEO has been losing sleep. Installation really is simple and easy. So easy, even the most technologically challenged folks would have no trouble with installation and configuration. That is something that I cannot say about a lot of products on the market. The SimpliSafe system is modular and easily expandable. Items can be purchased at once, or as time and money permit. The flexibility in the system is truly impressive. In addition, the SimpliSafe app and user interface has garnered a victory in the spousal acceptance factor. That alone is far more difficult and harder to achieve than any review of mine. Easily Recommended.

Incredibly easy setup and a lot of features
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This was my first experience with a home security system. Our current house has one that was put in when the house was built, but we've never used it. It doesn't work anyway. The problem with it is that it is fully built-in. The main box is in the coat closet, the window sensor wiring is in the walls as well as the keypad panel. With the SimpliSafe system, you unbox everything and download the app. The app guides you through the setup process. (You can also complete the setup with the keypad). After plugging in the base station I started with entry sensors. I placed them at the front door, back door, and the door to the garage. There is no drilling required. They attach to the frame and the door with the 3M Command Strips, which is great because they won't damage the paint and can be moved indefinitely. I then placed the motion sensor on the fireplace mantle to cover the living room. I then added the indoor camera to the mantle. For me, the downside of the indoor camera is that it has a power cord and it's black. My mantle is white, so it really stands out. I will probably end up moving it somewhere else because of that. With a lot of people doing the modern interiors now (stark white), black seems an odd color choice, especially when everything else in the kit is white. I also haven't seen a white option for the indoor camera that you can purchase separately. I then mounted the outdoor camera on the back porch looking towards the back door. Mounting was just 2 screws into the wood frame of our porch. The magnetic cap just does a 1/4 turn to lock onto the base that screws into the wood. The camera is held up by the magnet. My worry is that even a slight touch can move the camera in the mount and it can fall off. The perk is that with the rounded base, you can position the camera however you need. I screwed mine into the ceiling and rotated the image 180 degrees in the app so that it is right-side up. It has a large, rechargeable battery pack, so it should last months between charges. My final install was the keypad. It is held in place by four of the Command Strips. To get to the batteries you just slide the keypad up in the mount. I then did a test and SimpliSafe notified me that they received the test signal. The outdoor camera has great image quality. For me, the indoor camera suffers a little on image quality mainly due to the lighting in our living room, which is usually just a lamp on the end table. It has a shutter on it that you can keep closed when you're home for privacy and open when you've armed the system in away mode. Simplisafe has a few monitoring options and you can select the plan that works for you. Anywhere from about $10/month - about $25/month. They offer a free trial period so that you can try it out and see which plan works for you. SimpliSafe doesn't have contracts and you can change your plan or cancel at any time. Other alarm companies charge a low price for the equipment, but high monitoring fees. With SimpliSafe, you pay a reasonable price for the system and still have low monitoring fees. For me, I am just going to self-monitor the system. I don't need 24/7 monitoring. We live in the country and our neighbor is a sheriff's deputy and the guy across the street is a city cop. With 2 cop cars in the neighborhood, nothing ever happens out here. Pros: Super easy setup that anyone can do in about 30-45 minutes. Not many people have a landline anymore, but if yours was cut/out, SimpliSafe uses its own cell signal to call for help. All of the components are easily transferrable. If you ever move, just pull the sensors off the walls/doors and use new Command Strips to attach them in your new house (it comes with several extras). The base has an option to turn off the blue ring that lets you know that the system is functioning. When placed behind something, or on the bottom of an end table, no one would ever notice it. The base has a battery backup. If the power goes out, you're still protected. It will also give you an alert that you have a power outage and will notify you when power is restored. Very reasonable monitoring fees. All-in-one kit. Everything you need in one box. They sell individual parts separately so if you want more entry sensors or a second keypad, you can get them. Cons: Nothing major, I would just like a white indoor camera. Overall, this is a great system with everything you need to protect your home at a very reasonable price. I would definitely recommend it. I'm going to get a second one for my mom's house.
