    Fun but wasted potential

Sonic games are always hit or miss in terms of quality and this one falls in the "meh" category. Its not terrible but its not amazing either. Its just Ok. If you have played any current modern Sonic game such as Sonic Unleashed, Colors or Generations the game play is nearly identical which isn't necessarily a good thing. Being the first Sonic game on a true next generation console I expected a little more improvement in the gameplay and graphics department but what we got was actually a step back from what the previous games had already established. Mechanics that were previously introduced like drifting around corners is now gone replaced with the game doing it for you. While it looks cool its take away actual input thus causing a lot of the levels to feel "automated" and that's problem with the majority of the game. Most the modern Sonic levels can be beaten by simply holding the analog stick forward for a couple of minutes and the level ends. They brought classic Sonic back but somehow he controls worse than he did in Generations. Rolling down hills will not carry your momentum causing you to abruptly stop, and the levels are filled with "hidden" springs for no good reason. You can create and customize your own character which is a neat addition but it still doesn't help the somewhat boring level design. The custom avatar gets a few new tools such as the ability to use weapons called "wispons" which add a little variety but it quickly becomes mundane when the enemies just stand there posing no threat whatsoever. Big disappointment for a game that supposedly been in development for 4 years.

    It's a "Meh" game

Sonic Forces is just average from what I played. It's a step down compared to Sonic Generations. There's no drifts, no customizations for boosts & other skills (if you ever played Generations). For Modern Sonic, even when you boost, it doesn't feel quite as fast as he did in Generations & about half the time, the game goes auto-pilot on certain curves & turns slightly for you, even when you hold the boost button, which kinda annoyed me because it feels like they don't think you'll be able to beat the stages on your own. Classic Sonic has some of the worst physics & momentum when you play as him although his stages aren't bad. You just have to get used to landing platforms on his weird air momentum. That's pretty much it. As for the Avatar... I thought it was gonna be the worst part of the game only to end up being my favorite (which isn't saying much). The Avatar char. has a weapon called Wispon which lets you use different types of Wisps: Burst is a flamethrower, Lightning is an electric whip kinda weapon, just to give an example. Getting a Wisp item of your choice will grant you a Super, depending on which Wisp you choose, such as the Burst gives you an exploding jump to get to higher platforms & lightning gives you a ring/enemy dash. From a person who likes Modern Sonic stages in Sonic Generations, my favorite out of the three is the Avatar stages with Modern Sonic being my least favorite because of certain parts of each stages where Sonic goes auto-pilot & he has a few QTEs for some reason. The bosses weren't all that great either. Boost, homing attack 3 times, rinse & repeat for most of them. I'd give it a 6/10. It's not a bad Sonic game but it's not a great Sonic game. It's a meh Sonic game. If I we're you, I'd wait for a price drop (around $20 or so).

I am a huge fan of Sonic from the Sega Genesis era even up to the ps3 and 360 Sonic Unleashed days. First of all this game is not like Sonic Mania the masterpiece released two months before it. With this said Sonic Forces should not be discounted. I like the avatar and all the cosmetic, gear and weapon options which I unlocked all in the daily missions. Additionally, the price of the game is about right being around $30 or less. If you like 3D Sonic games this game is very playable. Just don't go in thinking it is as deep as Sonic Unleashed, Generations or Colors. Visually the characters and levels look nice and some of the music was done well to the level of say Sonic Colors or Unleashed which in my opinion have some of the best modern Sonic music. The many in-game unlockables really works well for the game. Sonic Forces creatively uses daily and weekly challenges related to wearing and using certain gear, which brought a lot of variety as well. Additionally there are challenges for completing stages within a certain time. However, I do feel the levels are short and you can blast through them and just mash "X" most of the time. Finally, this game seemed a bit like Sonic Heroes, Colors and Unleashed combined with your avatar able to use a variety of weapons as well as run, which in my opinion is very interesting. The Shadow the Hedgehog DLC was a nice bonus as well.

I am not disappointed by this game, but I am also not satisfied. I love sonic, and the franchise, but I feel like Sonic Team and SEGA had a lot of potential with this game. there are roughly 30 stages to the plot, with most if not all the stages being roughly 2 to 4 minutes long. I feel like a bit more time could have been devoted to the story, either making the stages longer or adding more stages. a good 50 stages would have been perfect! OVER ALL. I really enjoyed this game. took me about 3 hours to finish. Do i recommend this game? YES. yes i do. especially if you are a long time fan. the music in sonic games are always perfect! and i really enjoyed the story. if you buy this game, you will have a memorable time with it!

My son loved this, I bought it for him for Christmas. Yes it's great, no it's not as great as the old school side scrolling Sonic games, but that's only because it's not a side scrolling Sonic game. That's the only thing I feel that's different between modern Sonic vs old school Sonic. If your a true Sonic fan you'll love it. It's a great edition to the sonic series.

Had high hopes for this game to be a great follow up to Colors and Generations, but sadly didn't deliver. A game worth playing once to see what the game could have been. It just reeks of laziness in the gameplay department but at least the music is good.

After the surprise that was Sonic Mania earlier in 2017, Sonic Forces represents an unfortunate step back to typical mediocrity for modern Sonic games. Uneven difficulty, questionable level design and pacing, and a weak create-a-character option add up to another Sonic disappointment. Avoid this one until the price drops.

I was really hoping that this game would be on par with Sonic Generations, but it wasn't. If you're looking for a Sonic game (modern or classic), Sonic Mania is the game to get. If you want a more modern feel, then I recommend getting Sonic Generations. Especially if you have a PC. It's a much better game.

Every part of my order went without a hitch. I ordered on line for pickup at the last minute. The game was reasonably priced and no wait when I picked it up. I highly recommend and will again order this way. My grandson was so excited when he saw it Christmas morning.

The premise is that you can play as 3 characters: Sonic, Classic Sonic, and your avatar. Stages are too short. The level designs are not so great and the moment they get good, the stages end. The dialogue and the cutscenes are incoherent with each other. Sega could've done better with this one.

This is a fun game and would recommend it. It's better to have played Sonic Mania before starting this one, but it's not essential. Ordering from Best Buy was quick and easy and delivery was prompt. Also...price was excellent!!

I had fun with my time with Sonic Forces, but that fun didn't really last long. I beat the game in about 4 hours, and for a AAA title that costs 60 bucks, that's not really acceptable. I also ran into a lot of bugs that are pretty hair pulling.

This new Sonic melds the old-school style of Classic Sonic with the free-running 3D experience of the later Sonic games. It is great to see so many familiar faces from previous Sonic games in high-resolution. This is a fun addition to the series!

There have been far worse modern sonic games but this one definitely isn't the best either. Great music and visuals alongside a fun custom character creator. Level design is meh at best. Story is well, a sonic story.

Not a bad game for the latest 3D entry in the franchise. I like the fact that you can choose your own character avatar. Some of the stages could be better, but coming off the awful Wii U games, this game is a step back in the right direction.

According to my 10 year-old son, this is the "best Sonic game ever." I am not sure I completely agree, but it is definitely a fun Sonic game. Graphics are colorful and engaging and it mixes the classic gameplay mechanics with some new twists.

Purchased because I love sonic games and saw some live streams of competition on esports channels. Needs more levels and more side scroll levels like old game but overall very good game. Not quite a 4, not quite a 5 but close enough.
