    Excellent Sound, Dated Technology

I haven't yet found a Soundbar that can compete with a traditional quality A/V receiver and wired speakers. However, to me the simplification of the remote controls and overall declutter was worth it. I spent some time checking various soundbars on demo at stores and found the Bose 700 and Sonos Playbar to have the best sound. I did not consider the outstanding Samsung/Harmon Karden bars now being sold with Dolby Atmos mainly because these units were just too large for my setup. I ultimately chose the Playbar over the Bose due to the slightly lower price and overall better modularity of the Sonos system - I intend to add a Sub and Play One's at a later date. Simply put, the Playbar alone delivers outstanding sound and makes the TV content really come to life. I was impressed with the power of the mid range and even the bass from such a compact unit. It does have its drawbacks. For one, the unit is quite tall when laid on top of media stand, and unfortunately it blocked the lower part of my TV, which has very short legs. So then I went and got a small riser stand for the TV to solve that problem. I actually considered returning the unit because of this issue but ultimately decided to keep it because it sounds so good. Other drawback is the very limited connectivity. All you get is optical in. This is very far behind competitors and limits the functionality of the unit to whatever your TV optical out sends out. Despite these limitations, I opted to keep the unit. The sound is just so good I'm willing to overlook the shortcomings.

Excellent sound. Will not play Dolby Digital Plus

I have had the Sonos PlayBar for close to a year now in a 5.1 surround sound setup with the Sonos Sub and two Play:1's. I love the 5.1 Dolby Digital audio without the need to run speaker cable. One thing to be aware of though is that you will not be able to play Dolby Digital Plus content, which is the surround sound format used by Netflix and several other video streaming services now. There is no audio at all unless you switch the audio stream to stereo, and in my opinion that is not a viable solution. Some devices, such as the Xbox One and Apple TV, will convert the Dolby Digital Plus audio to standard Dolby Digital, so you can listen to 5.1 content from those services. However some devices do not, such as Roku and Amazon Fire TV devices, so you will not hear any audio at all unless you lower the audio output to stereo. Sonos has stated that this is because optical audio cables cannot handle the bandwidth required for DD+ audio. So you are really limited on which streaming devices you can use with the Sonos PlayBar 5.1 setup if you want to stream content that has DD+ audio. For this reason, if you are wanting a 5.1 setup, I recommend waiting until Sonos addresses this issue by possibly adding HDMI passthrough to their next PlayBar. But if you don't care about a 5.1 setup then this is an outstanding choice!

If you are looking for a Sound system that will "blow your socks off", in terms of total Volume, this isn't the system for you. However, i went to Best buy looking to get the Bose sound bar for my new t.v. I have a lot of Bose equipment but the sales guy had me compare the Bose sound bar to the sonos sound bar with wireless subwoofer. The clarity was incredible and I thought the price might be a little less. It was not. However, what makes the Sonos system more expensive in the end, makes it more valuable to me as a consumer. I have added a Play 3 to the sound bar and sub woofer and the system gets better and better. The point is that the woofer and sound bar sound just as good as the bose bar and better than the sony 7.1 or samsung bars. But, you can add the additional speakers when you are ready and each (speaker (play 3 or play 5)) can be set up to play anywhere you want in your household, or outside, and play different stations or T.V., depending on what you select on the Sonos application. That brings me to the sonos application: Originally, i was looking for a bar that had bluetooth so that i could play pandora on it. The sonos system doesn't have bluetooth but works off of an application that you download on your phone or computer, which in turn communicates through a router you set up to your wifi. the application and router allows you to multitask each speaker to play whatever you like in any room, depending on where you set up the speakers. So, i walk into my living room, my sonos bar and woofer are playing the sounds coming from my t.v. but when i go to my bedroom, the sonos play 3 is playing pandora. To sum up, the clarity is awesome and the base is great. It does not have a lot of power and the flexibility of the speakers and the use of the sonos application makes it great bang for the buck and can be used for more than T.V. entertainment.

Great soundbar. -The sound of this thing is worth 5 stars alone. It does a great job creating that surround sound feeling for a soundbar. -The initial setup was a breeze. But I had a major problem when I got a new router for my internet and had to switch all my Sonos to the new network. I'll go more into this later. Here's where it loses a few points: -The price. It's not competitively priced at all, but as long as it lasts a long time, it'll be well worth it. -It works off of wifi and not bluetooth. Now maybe this is the best thing these days. But I had a very hard time switching everything to a new network. It took me over an hour on the phone with tech support to get everything back up and running correctly, and I'm somewhat tech savvy myself. -The Sonos app is not easy to use. Too much going on. It takes about 5 sub menus to adjust sub and surround levels. -The Alexa functions of my other Sonos speakers don't work well with other Alexa devices. Now, I didn't but them for Alexa, but I did want it to connect to my other Amazon Alexa speakers when I play music in my Everywhere Group. So far I can't get this to work. -There's no HDMI... only fiber optic. This is especially frustrating because now my TV can't control the volume. So if you have a "cable" remote and a TV remote, you can only use one to control the volume. I know this may seem like a weird thing to gripe about, but it's annoying.

Review for sounbar only, but with the sub is great also. PROS: (outweigh cons) -No ethernet cable needed for setup. -Wifi connection to phone app is very convenient, but the navigation isnt too simple. -Night mode, and voice mode for TV. -Equalizer adjustment of treble/bass -Has big bass without need for the separate sub, especially if in a small room -A+ for highs and midrange frequencies. A- for lows. CONS: -No separate remote for volume control. Didnt work w/ my 2015 LG magic remote, but does with xfinity remote. -No HDMI connection, but really not needed for just 5.1 sound. BUT what happens if optical input breaks? get warranty.. -No Blutooth.. BUT according to manual, its not needed. Theres a way to connect phone directly to soundbar without blutooth or even an internet connection. -Easier to setup and use, and better sounding than the Bose 300. -Soundbar is too tall, so i had to tilt back sideways so it wont block my TV screen(but no difference in sound quality!) -Not visually appealing like the Bose 300, but still puts out! Side notes: The SUB setup procedure didnt work through phone app, only through my pc. Judging only on sound quality, I had the bose300 and sony st9, and sonos wins it.

This was a Christmas gift to me from my Wife and kids. We had already purchased a Play 5 and a Play 1 for in the living room and the kitchen. They listened to the unit in store and thought I would enjoy this as an addition to my newly-purchased 4K Samsung TV. I must say, setup was easy and the sound pleasing. My only disappointment is that the only audio connection is toslink...no HDMI available. I played some music through it after it was hooked up and my Wife was impressed. It was lacking on the bottom end, so I mentioned that I was eventually going to have to purchase the Sonos sub to pair with this and that if I was doing that, I might as well add an additional Play 1 for the full surround effect and relocate the Play 1 from the kitchen to pair it with. I have since done both. When I first turned it on my Wife couldn't stop oohing and aahing about the surround sound coming out of the rear Play 1's. The Play 5 is now in the kitchen. Entrance into the Sonos ecosystem is not cheap by any stretch of the imagination, but it's easy to hook up, has streaming music available and can also access the music on my Synology server. I also didn't need to worry about running wire all over the living room to the speakers. It sounds awesome to boot! (Of course it doesn't compare to the 7.1 Onkyo receiver/Klipsch Reference speakers paired to my home theater projector in the basement!)

Pros: - Sound quality is excellent. Would have loved to get the sub for this price, but my hubby doesn't like too much boom boom, so it's perfect for us. - Sonos controller app is perfect, so much better way to stream your music comparing to bluetooth for 2 reasons: 1. Music will stay play even if you make phone calls. 2. Music will still play even if you use video camera. This feature alone is what sold me to buy this sound bar. - I want something that I can connect to TV but also play music sometimes. This solves both for me. I can play all my music collection on Google Play, my MacBook Pro, my NAS WD My Cloud, Pandora Radio, etc. - Super easy to set up, only 2 cables. Cons: - I wish it had a power button, I know it's supposed to use only small amount of electricity when not playing audio, but I would have preferred to have an option to turn it off completely. - As much as I love the Sonos controller app idea, I feel it can be restricting. - Price: would have loved to get the sub for this price - Volume keys on your phone doesn't work to control volume unless you have the Sonos controller app open.

After hearing this dude in the store, I brought it home and paired it with a Samsung 4K television. The sound is stellar. So stellar, that I have put off acquiring the accompanying sub-woofer for the time being. I like being able to use the speaker without the television via the SONOS app. I also have some cons though. First, the app needs some work. It is not as intuitive as one might expect, and finding certain functions, like adjusting the bass levels, is a chore. If you just use the app to turn the volume up and down, then it's easy peasy. This brings me to my second issue, the SONOS speaker, at the moment, can only be turned up or down with the app as it is not compatible with my television, at least not yet. Lastly, mine hangs on the wall, and I uses the SONOS wall bracket. The location of the power and optical wire are difficult to hide based on their location in the speaker and the location of the hole that's available in the back of the bracket. I wish there was a small plate available to cover them up. But the sound trumps everything!

Only wish this had hdmi input. I purchased this in a surround package(+sub woofer and 2 Sonos Ones)...by itself it’s not that impressive, although way better than TV speakers...when integrated into the surround package the Sonos system sounds AMAZING. The optical input delivers way better sound than I expected...Although I keep reading that HDMI is the way to go,. Rated this 4 stars as a stand-alone device, when paired with the surround I would give it a 5+. I also see a lot of Sonos reviews complaining that the Sonos updates are problematic...I’ve been through a couple of updates and have had none of the problems that many folks are experiencing. The app works great. I have this connected to. Samsung 82” QLEd UHD TV...no problems or issues. Would highly recommend biting the bullet and purchasing a sub and 2 surround speakers with this...you’ll be blown away at the quality.

I bought the Sonos Playbar and three Play1's. I'm happy with the system overall and plan to add a couple more Play1's in other rooms. I was initially planning to buy the powered bass but the system has great bass without it and has more volume than I can enjoy in a condo already. Issues ...I can't use my Samsung Series 8 TV remote because the Sonos uses IR and the TV uses RF. So I'm having to use two remotes .. my XFINITY remote (IR) does everything but turn the TV on/off which I have to use the TV remote for. The ability to "group" speakers is more limited and less useful than i expected so I've stopped using it. I was hoping it would have the ability to assign speakers to multiple groups .. such as the Playbar be in the "Living Room" group while also being in an "All Speakers" group for example. So I could select Living Room to play TV audio and then later have the All Speakers group play iHeart radio but this doesn't seem to be possible. I also wish Sonos was integrated with my Amazon Echo. I hope the rumor I heard that is in the works is true.

I spent an hour listening to different sound bars in the Best Buy store before settling on the Sonos Playbar. In the end, the sound from the Playbar was just far, far superior to anything else. The range and clarity, and even the bass level, without a subwoofer, are amazing. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is the lack of an analog or Bluetooth input. The Playbar connects to your TV via a fiber optic cable, which is great, but when using it as a speaker, you have to use the somewhat clunky Sonos app to play your music over the Playbar, which is less than convenient. Or, you need to buy the new Play:5, which has an analog input, and network them together. But there is no way to play music over the Soundbar alone except through the Sonos app - which does not interface with Apple Music. But the sound you get from the Sonos speakers is far superior to anything else in its price range, so I deal with the inconvenience of its network configuration.

One need only listen to the Sonos Playbar to hear the fantastic quality. Alone out of all the soundbars I investigated, Sonos delivers an improvement over the old computer speakers that I had been using with my TV. A separate subwoofer is sold, but since I live in a cramped space, I was pleased that the Playbar doesn't need it to still rattle the floors and deliver fantastic volume. Setup was not a joy, though. I was sold the Playbar without mention that it absolutely requires a network connection. You either need to hard-wire it to a router, which was not practical in my living space, or you need to buy the Sonos Bridge wireless hub for an extra $50. This was a very unpleasant surprise when I started to hook up my Playbar, as this was not mentioned in the Best Buy sales pitch, the general descriptions of the Playbar on the Sonos site, or anywhere on the box. Once I got the Bridge, though, installation was fairly easy and now I have the ability to wirelessly stream music from my various computing devices, so at least I got some extra features out of the deal.

They speakers are very expensive for what you get. I was able to buy an open box for about $530 in stead of the $700. The main reason to buy the play bar is the convenience of being to addd to it and build a custom set up. i would definitely recommend these speakers to anyone but make sure you buy the subwoofer along with this. If you have one of those low profile tvs that sit really close to the tv stand then i would not recommend these speakers things they are very think in height. They will definitely look better it wall mounted. The app is smooth but not very intuitive for adjusting the treble or base on the sub. You hind of have to dig through it a little. I am giving this 4 stars because it does not have bluetooth .One other issues is that you might need to connect it to your router to set it up.

As a sound bar, I find it just okay. Granted, we don't have the sub-woofer yet...we have to save up a little more for that. But the sound from the sound bar alone isn't what I expected...it's nothing spectacular. And adjusting the sound on it using our remote is a little tricky. The sound level shown on the TV never matches the level we're actually hearing. Sometimes a 6 or 7 is just fine, but sometimes we have to turn it up to 42 to be heard decently. Then if you turn the level down to zero, there's still sound coming out, so you have to go below zero to actually turn the sound off. I've read about this from others, so I thought was ready for it, but it's still an adjustment. I was used to knowing how loud the sound would actually be at a 10 or 11, but now it's a gamble. When used just for music as part of our total Sonos system, though, it's spectacular! I love the total immersion of the entire Sonos system. Would I recommend it? Right now, no....until I hear it with the sub-woofer. If I had to do it over again, I'd just get another Sonos speaker.

If you are looking for a great sounding sound bar then this is it. As with every Sonos Item I've ever touched everything from the packaging and instructions are top notch. The installation was very easy and worked first try. The only issue I have is the Optical Cable they include does not seat properly in my TV for some reason. For some reason I can't seem to get Dolby out of my TV which makes a HUGE difference. If you don't give it a Dolby Signal it will simulate it and does a pretty good job but nothing is better than the real thing. I ended up connecting it directly to my Cable Box. Bottom line, I love this Soundbar, as with all Sonos items it is a little on the pricey side but it is also very good quality. Make sure you TV or whatever device you are connecting to puts out Dolby before investing. This isn't just a Sono's thing this would stand true for any Soundbar.

Well the sound is great setup was easy. But make sure your tv is not on the incompatible list. Go on the sonos website. Mine was even though it is only a couple years old but an adapter not sold by best buy was all that was needed. It caused a few more issues due to the adapter but not so bad that I would return it. You still are limited to putting the speakers near plugs so you can't just take a speaker outside and run it off battery. If you setup your speakers as surround sound and decide you want to just play from 1 if those speakers you have to jump through some annoying hoops each time you want to do that but not impossible. With the price of the speakers it is something to keep in mind and the commercials can be a little misleading on this. Sonos support is top notch and very knowledgeable. A real pleasure when you will likely call to ask them questions. But overall it is a great sound and at least you don't have to run speaker wire all over the place.

This has great sound by itself, but adding the sub woofer makes it phenomenal! The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is set up was a little more difficult than we thought. We ended up calling Best Buy and thankfully they knew the product well and walked us through it over the phone. Apparently, though we followed all the steps, set up didn't take. We kept re-setting it up but really weren't sure where we went wrong. When we called, we were told we would need to reset it and start over as there was no way to tell what step went wrong. I have no problem re-setting, but the super simplified instructions neither mentioned resetting or telling you how to do it. When we were told where the little reset hole was we knew we would have never just found that on our own. So even though I totally love it and it sounds great, I think they should have added that little detail to the instructions just in case.

GREAT product. Sound is amazing! The speaker is Very large and heavey, not easy to conceal and most TV's with a stand will require special furniture to keep the speaker come covering of the bottem of the Screen. The killer (only cause of price) after using the bar for tv there are zero function commands to change inputs (to use the speaker for sonos). This is only apparent if your using Harmony Products to control your system. there is commands to switch to TV but not back... its a one way street. The fix for the problem is to use a tablet/phone/or laptop to control sonos separate from the harmony control system,,, called sonos about the issue it will take time to update the product, but its coming. This shouldn't be a problem for a high end home theatre sound bar system... All that said its worth having the funcationality for a sonos system and a high end sound bar in one package... other sonos speakers can be used to create a wifi 5.1 system, Missing funcationality but still a solid product.

I looked at this sound bar for a long time. I wanted to get rid of a home theater in a box setup and give our new tv better sound. The price of this bar really held me back. I had experience with it + the subwoofer and liked it. Adding it to our other Sonos speakers was a plus. With the optical audio the setup was easy, although hdmi would have been preferred. It went on sale and I purchased it straight away. It’s chunky in appearance. I lay it down in front of our new tv in a nook. It hooked right up to the tv and volume adjusts with the tv remote; you can also use the app. The sound is great. I like the dialog enhancing mode and action quieting mode for late night viewing. I’ve only experienced the audio out of sync once. I just turned the tv off and then back on. No woofer yet, but we still like the sound.

Got this unit for master bedroom to eliminate previous separate amp and floor standing speakers, and to establish a Sonos listening zone in the master bedroom. I am an audiophile, so I write this review from the perspective of one that usually does not compromise much on sound (freestanding vs. in-wall speakers, FLAC over mp3, etc.). Having recently replaced my whole house audio system with an all Sonos system (using my own amplifiers and speakers with multiple Sonos "Connects")), I removed the receiver and floor standing speakers from the separate master bedroom system and installed the "Playbar". Setup was easy, and now I have Sonos zone in bedroom. Sound is good, not great, as there are limits imposed by laws of physics on the sound output and spatial imaging from a single Playbar. However, I expect to hear noticeable improvement after installing a Sonos sub.
