Breaking the (Size and) Sound Barrier

What I hear doesn’t match what I see. We expect Soundbars to create a movie theater experience and we imagine larger cabinets are required, Or maybe a subwoofer. This SONOS Soundbar breaks a lot of expectations. And I’m won over. The sound is gorgeous. I’m still a fairly novice user in the world of SONOS, so, it’s not just the sound quality that still surprises me. As I dived into the features, and the sound quality and watched the interplay of this new SONOS device with my music sources I was reminded why SONOS appeals to even non-techies. Everything is slickly accomplished and I won’t need to break a sweat to get great results. SETUP: New to SONOS? Download the App for your phone. Set up an account. Link to your Internet, either ethernet wired or Wi-Fi. and go back into the App. The App usually finds the nearby SONOS device without prompting, but if it’s not there you can select ADD DEVICE, and you’re on the way to adding your online music streaming services, naming the room this unit is in, attaching the TV via OPTICAL DIGITAL, only, and that’s pretty much it. Current user? I only had to open the SONOS App after plugging in the SONOS Ray, and the prompt was there in my existing App, asking if I wanted to add the Ray.. I was playing music within a few minutes. Absurdly easy. PERFORMANCE: It’s easy to forget that functional controls are also on top of the SONOS Ray device. Most of the time, if you’re using your TV - to - Soundbar connection, everything happens automatically using the TV controls. There is some effort required here. Be sure pull out your TV instructions or look them up online. You’ll want to turn off your TV speakers in favor of this SONOS. If your TV allows it, you may be able to use the TV remote to control the volume. If not, there is the SONOS App or those controls on top of the Ray. For music from your streaming devices (phone, Tablet, computer), you’ll be using the SONOS App. It all becomes second nature. The sound? Shockingly good. It pretty easy these days to get good bass from a speaker. Or maybe you can get that voice range well enough to hear voices clearly. Or perhaps you just want volume to fill your space. It is very rare to have such a reasonably priced speaker of this size get it ALL so right. I started with music and was impressed by how the speaker could rock out anything in my Apple Music library. With the SONOS App connected to Pandora, or Spotify or my computer’s music collection, it was easy to call up anything, and everything sounded great. Moving on to movies, I played some Netflix and HBOMAX series, and voices were perfect. Sound effects were realistic. What couldn’t the SONOS do? Surround effects flattened out to the front soundstage, but SONOS has a solution with they surround speakers which can be added to expand on this setup. They even have a subwoofer that can be attached. The SONOS Port allows you to add your own equipment to the SONOS sound ecosystem, but it’s not inexpensive. SUMMARY: SONOS is one of those fun companies that defies expectations and breaks rules. Ignore the size of the SONOS Ray. Its size will confuse you. It plays so much bigger. It sounds so much more natural and unstrained than you’d expect. I’m not suggesting this is appropriate for a large open space with high ceilings to provide party music or theater-level sound reproduction. But any reasonable living room, family, bedroom or home office is a perfect match. When you consider the comprehensive controls and connectivity features in the App, this is such an easy recommendation.

I love all things Sonos. Was an early adopter way back when they first came on the market. The Ray is a great little soundbar, good volume, reasonable bass and a small footprint. As with all Sonos stuff, it was easy to setup and connect to my existing system. I would seriously recommend the Ray for a bedroom or secondary family room or den. The bonus, of course, is its music capabilities as well. Again, I highly recommend the Ray.

Don’t buy this it sounds terrible. It has no power. Doesn’t get loud at all. Coming from a klipsch sound bar that rocks the house. Sonos sounds like a tiny speaker.

I recently had to replace all my stuff and I desperately needed sound for my computer. My previous speakers were a 2.1 logitech system but this time I wanted to try out a sound bar and I was kind of intrigued by the Sonos brand so I decided to try this one out. The overall sound coming out of this speaker is very decent for the size. I have it sitting under my monitors. I use them as the main sound output for my gaming computer. They sound great but somewhat hollow. What it really lacks is in the highs. Bass is decent but not room shaking. I do not have the optional subwoofer but plan to get one in the future. For movies the speaker provides a very good experience. Music is decent but I think the models higher up will be better if you can afford it but that's a significant jump in price. My unit was a open box item and overall I'm very satisfied. The Sonos app is cool but I really never use it with my phone. It's connected via optical audio to my computer. If you can find this speaker open box I deffinitely recommend it or if you can find the Beam which is the next model up in open box it's not much more than a new Ray model.

Very clear sound, and a suprising amount of low end for its small size. Beats any tv’s built-in speakers by a mile. Although, a sub would be desired for larger rooms and/or if you are heavy into music with lots of low end. Very easy to setup so that it worked seamlessly with the tv remote control. Works flawlessly with the rest of my sonos gear.

      Hello,

Thank you for sharing your experience with the Sonos Ray soundbar! We're thrilled to hear that you find its sound quality to be very clear and that it delivers a surprising amount of low-end for its small size.

It's great to know that the Sonos Ray outperforms built-in TV speakers by a significant margin, providing a more immersive and enjoyable audio experience. We understand that for larger rooms or for those who enjoy music with heavy low-end, adding a subwoofer may be desired to further enhance the bass response.

We're glad to hear that you found the setup process to be easy, and that the Sonos Ray seamlessly integrates with your TV remote control and the rest of your Sonos gear. This convenience is key to ensuring a hassle-free and enjoyable user experience.

Thank you for choosing Sonos, and we're delighted that you're satisfied with the performance of your Sonos Ray soundbar! john.milton

For my use it’s great. I use it via the optical cable for my desktop computer. I don’t have space for two desktop speakers and this fit right under my monitor. For its size, the sound is great but I wouldn’t recommend it for an entertainment system. Cons: No remote No HDMI port Sonos app is terrible Tricky installation with app Pros: Comes in white Affordable- paid $110 on sale Great sound for size Compact

It’s easy to setup but keep in mind you WILL have to download an app to finish setting up. Afterwards its ease of use to control EQ and volume is great. Tho im sure there ARE speakers specifically for PC’s I saw this on a post on reddit and just couldn’t get rid of the idea or how well they looked. Small and compact is great for any space and how loud they can get is a plus.

Yo, let me just say—this Sonos Ray I grabbed from Best Buy is straight fire! From the jump, setup was a breeze. Like, plug it in, connect the app, and boom—crisp, clean sound coming at you from every direction. I didn’t even need to read the directions The sound quality? Insane. Movies, music, podcasts—it all sounds chef’s kiss. The bass hits just right without shaking the whole building, and the clarity? Bruh, I’m hearing details I didn’t even know existed. Perfect for my living room setup and doesn’t take up a ton of space either. Sleek, stylish, and it just works—no stress, no fuss. 10/10, would recommend. Shoutout to Best Buy for hooking it up!

    Latency Holds This Back

I was excited to get Ray as it fits nicely below our new Sony 4K TV. The good news first: Ray sounds excellent - tight n' punchy with plenty of bass. Unfortunately, there's a built-in delay between the picture onscreen and the sound coming from Ray, even though they're right next to each other. Ray has a minimum 75 millisecond lag, which is way too long. There's no way to get sound & picture tighter. At times, it's far worse than that, which is helped by doing an inconvenient restart of the TV. The delay is never acceptable. There are also regular issues with the volume being controlled between the Sony TV remote and the DirecTV remote. It's difficult to maintain a consistent volume. All in all, I wouldn't recommend Ray to anyone, unless Sonos develops a fix for the unacceptable latency in its design. With that lag, I can't recommend it.

A very nice blend between price, quality and size. Easy to install and it has added a nice quality sound to my TV room. I'm becoming more and more impressed with Sonos products and I appreciate being able to control both this speaker and my other Sonos speakers from the a single app. While this may not have the power of 5.1 with numerous speakers around the room, it has enhanced the sound and viewing experience of my 65" Samsung TV

This is my first product from Sonos and I must say the Ray is a great introduction. I’ve always had Samsung soundbars to match my television brand. I love the look and clear sound of the Ray. I don’t intend to use it for music since I have a HomePod for that. For TV use it’s perfect.

Another amazing device from Sonos. As an entry level product, it still blows the competition away. The sound is crisp, immersive and customizable. Pros: Solid build and design quality. Easy to setup. Easily accents other Sonos equipment in your home. Enhances TV viewing immediately. Perfect if you’re new to the Sonos lineup. Cons: No HDMI ARC, no remote. (Sonos Ray can use your tv remote though) Overall I’d highly recommend this product. We use it in the bedroom where it excels in all areas. Great for streaming music or watching tv.

The Sonos Ray is a solid soundbar that packs great sound into a compact size and an affordable price. It’s perfect for small spaces or anyone looking to upgrade their TV audio without breaking the bank. The sound quality is impressive for its size, especially when it comes to dialogue clarity and balanced audio. However, it does have one drawback—it's not compatible with Hey Google or Alexa, so you can’t control it using voice commands. If smart assistant integration is a must-have for you, this might be a dealbreaker. But if you’re just looking for a simple, good-quality soundbar, the Sonos Ray is a great choice for the price.

The sound quality of this is great. It's a perfect size and really hits above it's weight class, so to speak. But I just can't understand why this is still sold with the specs it has. It's a dinosaur, technologically speaking. Connecting via digital optical, although precise in sound quality transmission, makes it impossible to control volume levels unless you have an IR based remote for your TV with line of sight. I returned mine, because that is non-negotiable. Having a BT remote for my tv and streaming boxes meant that I could not raise and lower volume without using the app or physically touching the button on the bar. The only application that I could see this being great for is a computer soundbar. I am a Sonos fan. I have the Arc soundbar with the mini-sub, and 2 Era 100's as rear. I am immersed in whatever I am watching, and will scream from the mountain-top that this is a worthwhile investment for your entertainment needs. But...not the Ray. It's a bummer, i want to like it. But I just cant. Grateful that Best Buy made the return so easy, and even the employee who handled my return was baffled that such a high profile device was lacking so much basic functionality.

I got this soundbar for my apartment and it sounded AMAZING just from playing music. It does not have bluetooth (I shouldve researched better before ordering) so I had to return it because of that BUT it does have airplay. I ordered a Bose soundbar that had bluetooth and could noticeably tell the difference between the sound quality of the Sonos. Im not even a person who is an expert or usually cares about that stuff….but the Sonos sound quality was so much better (and same price because of Black Friday). Now that I have a TV, (and bluetooth is no longer a necessity) I needed to swap them ASAP! I highly recommend this soundbar, the app is great. The ability to adjust the bass and treble is great. Its a bummer this one doesnt have bluetooth, but airplay works just fine.

Little Things in Life- Sonos sound for the Kitchen

We added this small sound bar to the TV in our kitchen. It makes your kitchen feel like a theater room. So easy to install and we control everything from our Apple TV remote so no need for multiple remotes for content selection or volume. That’s a first for our family. We can watch traditional TV, YouTube content or music with premium sound. Feels like an elevated experience for not that large of an investment. Sometimes in life it’s the little tweaks like this purchase that seem to enhance every day living. We have been 20 year+ customers of Best Buy and Sonos. Finally replacing the complex Bose Home Theater system installed 15 years ago in the Family Room. Next week the Geek Squad guys are coming to upgrade the TV room with some Sonos love!! Stay tuned for that review. Let’s hope it feels as good as the Kitchen Media upgrade .
