Good: 1. The Vertical soundfield processing and Atmos support does improve the listening experience. 2. Built in chromecast support makes playing audio from mobile devices easy and convenient. 3. Design and look of the product is appealing. 4. Easy to set up. 5. Got $200 off when bundled with my TV purchase. Bad: 1. A/V Sync problems. Sources originating from a TV (Netflix app) will pass audio to the soundbar via ARC. However, there is a noticeable delay between the picture and the audio (audio behind picture). Attempts to change picture settings to delay picture have been unsuccessful. Firmware update for my TV set is not recommended at this time when using a external sound system (Sony X900f). The only configuration that results in *close* A/V sync is plugging the HDMI source into the soundbar (such as XBOX, AppleTV) and then the soundbar into the TV. However, this negates the use built-in TV apps. Sony recommends plugging directly into the soundbar to keep A/V sync as close as possible. Google search "HT-z9f sync". I find this is unacceptable and is the primary reason for my return. 2. The product only provides 2 HDMI inputs on the soundbar. If the recommended method is to plug directly into the soundbar please give us more HDMI ports. 3. Included HDMI cable is not sufficient for 4k HDR or Dolby Vision. Standard 4k does work, but once you use a HDR source (such as Netflix via XBOX), flickering and picture dropouts will occur. 4. Because it's a soundbar the sound quality is just marginally better than standard TV speakers. In some cases I find the quality worse (music)! It does provide more clarity in the mid-high and high ranges, but a major loss in the midrange. 1" dome drivers can only do so much. 5. Occasionally the wireless subwoofer will cut-out at low volumes. No known cause.

I purchased this unit and a XBR65A8F Dec 15th of 2019 and did not hook it up for 2 weeks as I was prepping the area for the TV and soundbar. The soundbar was installed and running for less than 2 months when sound started cutting out. I did my own trouble shooting and realized the issue was with the input from my cable box to the soundar. If I used any app on the smart TV and it was running through the ARC then it was fine. If I turned the soundbar off and passed the HDMI connection through to the TV it was also okay. Soundbar on and outputting sound from cable box and it would cut out. When I say cut out it was for 2 seconds and every 30 to 60 minutes between events. And before you ask, yes I changed the cables multiple times. I opened a case with Sony and after they had me do the usual reset (Sony's default answer to everything) the problem persisted. They had me send it in for service and and replaced the main board. Less than 2 months later and voila, same old problem. I started a new case and the usual reset was recommended. This problem persist so next is I ask for a new unit, not this one though. Save your money. I had a Denon AVR 1913 for over 5 years and never an issue. I wanted the soundbar so I could get rid of all the speakers but clearly should have kept using it.

This sound bar sounds ok but the problem is it puts the TV in a sleep mode so it is almost impossible to get to operate properly without to much work. I connected it as recommended first then at the request of Best Buy I tried a different connection with a little better help after a week of trying to get it to work I had my cable guy to try a digital connection. I sent a request to Sony and no help there not even a reply. The issue is you can not get the tv to come on without to much effort. It has to be done with the Sony remote initially and the real problem is the bar will come on and the next attempt the tv will come on and the bar will cut off. After several attempts going back and forth you have to go to the tv and cut it on so the bar does not cut off. After you get them on properly the cable remote works perfectly on and off at your will until it is turned off and left off for some time. After a hour or so you have to start all over again. In case you think it is the tv I bought two at the same time and I switched them after a couple days and both do the same with the bar but work great without the bar. Poor Sony may know the problem but will not respond to my request for help

soundbar creates loud clicking/ snapping sounds

the soundbar can only be connected to tv with optical cable. If I use ARC 3 to soundbar (via HDMI), I get a loud clicking/ snapping sound when I change the cable channels or pause and start programing again. This is very annoying! I have to run HDMI's to the tv (cable box/ PS/3) with optical cable (TV to Soundbar) to get rid if clicking, but then I do not view changes on the tv when using the soundbar remote (the changes in volume, bass, auto & music button changes selection do not show up on the tv screen). Hard to read display on the soundbar.

Setup is extremely complicated, especially when the instructions that came with the sound bar gave more instructions about a Sony TV then the soundbar. Once set-up the sound kept cutting in a out both from the soundbar itself and from the extra rear speakers that I purchased. This was recommended by one of the experts in the department. This is my second try at a soundbar. Bought a Bose and it was easy to setup through their ap.

    Terrible wireless connection

The soundbar itself is fine. The problem is the wireless surround speakers and the sub. Constantly cut in and out. I have tried moving them everywhere and have used every possible setting to try and fix it. If you are going to spend this much money go buy a Bose system, theirs are actually high quality.

Bought an open box product at first. Worked well for a week and then stopped working all together. Took it back and got a new in box one. That one worked for a month or two and now it doesn’t work either. Will never buy again

For the price, you could do better with a receiver, and speakers purchase. The subwoofer is the weakest link. Seek an alternative for your sound.
