    EXCELLENT LENS / MAJOR FLAW

I wanted to love this lens. I really did. The form factor and the weight are simply outstanding. Auto-focus is extremely quick and images are tack sharp. And now we get to the issue....my copy had two EXTREMELY annoying characteristics. The first was that the lens made a constant low-pitched humming noise. The second issue was that when you auto-focused it made a rather loud motor noise. It drove me crazy. At first, I thought it was me and so I kept mounting all of the lenses I own for my A7IV to compare. Samyang, Sigma, Sony--none of the other lenses were even close to being as loud. Total deal breaker for me. I ended up going with the GM 1.4 which I love. Now, before you say to yourself that this must be an 'upsale' attempt couched in a review, it is not. In fact, I'm going to assume that maybe I got a bad copy? I did find instances online of a few others who had this issue. This lens has received incredible reviews across the board so I can't imagine that everyone who has purchased and loves this lens are simply 'putting up' with the loud motor noise when auto-focusing. If I set the Aperture Drive in Autofocus mode to 'Silent Priority' the noise would disappear but my understanding is that this mode can potentially slow autofocus speed. Making a concession like this is unacceptable to me and I do think others should be aware of it.

This is a nice lens. Quiet and light weight.A little pricey. Should be closer to the 85mm 1.8 in price. But overall a solid lens. Great addition to my 85 and 55 mm.

I have used this lense on the Sony A7ii. I have the cheaper 50mm 1.8 as well. There is no comparison between the performance and build quality of these 2 lenses. The 50mm is a great value and produces nice images, but it's slower focus speed and noise are very noticable compared to the 35mm. The 50 is loud and slow, the 35 is fast to focus and basically silent, making it a better choice for video / action. The 35 quality feels very solid compared to the 50, which is a bit lighter. Eye AF works better on the 35mm IMO.

I was looking for a lens which I could carry around. And this was a great option. This is cheaper and works very well from its most expensive cousin. I already own a 85mm Sony lens which gives me great photographs. But this lens is great for carrying around as it's really light, compact and fits in my smaller camera bag. The 85mm lens is a little bulky.

This lens has been everything i hoped it would be. Classic 35mm angle, razor sharp and that 1.8 is gorgeous. Has already made me some money. The lens hood feels a little flimsy in the way it locks in place but it does it job. Lens feels quality as well. Im so happy with the results for less than 1/2 the price of the G Master

If you have to own one prime lens for FF E-mount

I bought this lens shortly after switching from Sony APSC to the Full Frame Sony a7iii. My preferred APSC setup had been using the FF Sony 28mm f/2.0 to achieve a normal 42mm equivalent FOV. Using a slightly wider FOV makes the 35mm focal length more multipurpose. This partially is a recommendation just for the 35mm focal length, but if you have to use one prime lens and one focal length for Sony FF, I think this still is the most versatile option. The f/2.8 35mm options from Sony/Zeiss and Samyang are serviceable (I've owned the Samyang), but unless you really value the smaller lens size, you'll miss out on the lower light performance. For me, the Sigma options are too large and not worth the trade-off for f/1.4 or f/1.2. Some people think this lens is overpriced, but I think that mostly has to do with the Sony 85mm f/1.8 being a cheaper but comparable size/aperture/quality option in the Sony line and that set price expectations. No one would complain if this was $200 cheaper, but I think this is the best one-lens option for Sony. If you have a higher megapixel Sony FF camera, the 24mm GM probably would be a better one-lens option, since you could get even more versatility through cropping (though that lens is more expensive).

Expensive for a 1.8, but ultra compact for street and photo journalism work. The 35 1.4 variety is just too in your face with its size. Also great for gimbal video work as it’s light and no focus breathing problem. No front end movement when focusing also help on the weather sealing.
