Greatly degraded in long-term use as a monitor

Two years later, I am severely torn. The good: Great out of the box picture quality. Sitting about 15-20 inches away from the screen, using Graphics mode, the quality of displayed text, both on light and dark backgrounds is crisp. Yes, a dedicated monitor will look better, but this screen has exceeded my initial expectations. The dealbreaker: I noticed within a few months that the "no signal" display is starting to leave a mark, but it would disappear after a hour or two of normal use. Within the last 3 months though, severe burn-in/screen degradation has started taking over the lower right side of the screen, and is now extending about 2/3 the way up, and about a 1/4 the way across the screen. It's important to note that this is only happening on one side of the screen, so it definitely seems like some sort of screen degradation/failure. The unfortunate/annoying: The TV does not have a great low-power standby solution. It can turn off completely after some time (which means that next time I walk up to my computer, I have to manually turn on the screen), or it can display a static "No signal" display, which will cause burn-in. Unlike a monitor, it does not have a 'sleep/wake' mode that would power off the screen only. I think this lack of a low-power mode is really the ultimate undoing of this screen when used as a monitor, since for quick access, I end up running the screen 24/7. To be clear, I understand that this is supposed to be used as a TV, not as a monitor, but it DOES make a great monitor out of the box, and I feel like a better low-power mode would benefit all users.

Just not so sure I needed a Smart TV as with Comcast, I’m fine w/o it. I had some issues with the 1st TT guys install yet all’s fine. I was able to get the Google Home app & get through it myself…& the 2nd man who came was very nice. I love having bought TT as it’s nice to know there’s backup. So far so good.

But i went with the Sony rather than some cheaper brand and it is well worth it. probably a third of the weight of my old TV, the clarity and contrast are excellent. Bravia is the one to go with, i did get the extended warranty due to the fragilty of todays TV screens and the risk of a repeat power surge. Due to the size of the room i have mine installed on a full motion mount.

No wall mount

However, I cannot find a wall mount for the TV either at Best Buy or anywhere on-line. The M6 bolts in the TV for use with a wall mount are too small for any available wall mount, it can only be used with the table top stand (feet) provided.

We're sorry to hear that you're unable to find a wall mount to use for your TV. The mounting screw is not supplied upon purchase. We recommend using a VESA compliant wall mount with 7 7/8 x 7 7/8 inch (200 x 200 mm) hole pitch pattern. Please note that there is also a weight limit with any mount and the bracket that you'll be using needs to be able to support the TV weight which is 22.1 lb (10 kg). The mounting screw is not supplied upon purchase.

Unlike many other brands, the images on this tv don’t look like a soap opera. That is, a movie looks like a movie, and not like video tape because the resolution is TOO sharp. We’ve had other new TVs, but returned them because the film resolution was so sharp that the film looked “taped”, if you know what I mean. Remote is straight-forward (unlike what you find on an LG TV), and easy to use. Highly recommend. Do note that current models tend to be much wider than previous models, but not a tall. So, even though we purchased a 43” screen, it looks a bit smaller than what we had previously, because it’s not as tall as our older TV. But it’s very light and easy to set up. And the picture is gorgeous.

I am not authorized to speak on behalf of Sony or my employer. The opinion expressed here is my own. I have long been a fan of Sony products, and I have never been let down by a Sony television, going back to the Trinitron days. This television continues that streak. I was looking for a budget friendly, mid-tier television. The Sony X80J fits the bill. I got Sony's legendary picture processing in an affordable package. Let me preface the rest of this review by saying that with Televisions, you get what you pay for. If I had spent more, I certainly could have gotten a better TV. IMHO, this TV is the best you can get in its price class. First, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the built-in speakers. TV speakers are bad. That is a consequence of the ever increasing desire for thinness from consumers. The existence of sound bars makes it easy for manufacturers to meet that customer desire. Even so, Sony has done a good job with their speakers. I have recent TVs in the same price class from both Samsung and LG in my home. The Sony TV has the best built in sound, period. With that being said, I would recommend anyone purchasing a new TV to budget for at least a 3 channel sound bar. Second, setup was a breeze. I like the Google TV interface as compared with the interfaces from LG, Samsung, and Toshiba. One of the best options was to setup the TV in "simple mode" meaning that you have the option not to use the "smart" features. This is especially useful if you are setting the TV up for someone who is not technically savvy. Finally, the picture quality is fantastic at this price point. My wife has commented several times on how much more lifelike the picture on our Sony TV is compared with the other TVs in the house. In conclusion, if you are looking for a good TV in this price class, the X80J will fit the bill. Don't expect this TV to be the equivalent to a Sony X90J or a Samsung Q80. It isn't there, but it also doesn't cost as much.

The picture quality is very nice for my viewing. I use this for viewing streaming content, Bluray/DVDs and occasionally over-the-air antenna reception. It works great with my Sony 4k disc player as well as a Roku streaming stick 4k+ and those work flawlessly connected to the tv. Antenna viewing works pretty well, too. The sound quality of the tv speakers are fine for my ears, though I do have a pair of wireless earbuds (bluetooth) which connected easily, and the tv automatically connects to them when I switch the earbuds on. It's been a great tv for the pricepoint, and I'd recommend it.

Cue spring 2020 and we realized we were going to be spending a lot of time in front of the screen and time to upgrade from our old 27"'er. This has been fantastic both for over the air digital and streaming. We're not trying for ani max theater and this does the job. The android TV interface has mostly been an upgrade over the old roku or blu-ray that we were using for our streaming apps. Very occasionally we'll need to restart an app but for the most part everything just works, looks and sounds great.

Not my Grandfather's Sony

I agreewith a previous reviewer, the lack of light on the remote control is not ideal. When lights are low or off, the buttons on the remote cannot be seen. My issue is 1 year, 3 months and 1 day, the picutre faded and started flickering. Hopefully Best Buy Total Tech can fix it next week, as the warranty has expired. I have had this just over a year, my mother still has my grandfather's Sony Bravo from his passing 10 years ago, and it is still perfect. He had had it for sometime as prior to his passing it must be approaching 20 years, yet it still works. Quality has definately gone donw hill.

Please check the following to troubleshoot if the Android screen is flickering:
Check if the issue occurs when on the TV's home screen.
Use the Picture/Sound symptoms feature of your TV to check the cause of the issue.
If the issue doesn't occur while on the home screen, and after performing the Picture/Sound symptoms, check if the screen flickers while on a different input.
If you're experiencing the issue while using an external device, verify the physical cable connection between the TV and the device, as well as the device settings.
If possible, try to use a different cable.

A very Good Purchase!

We have an LG in the living room and I like it just fine. Most of these new TV's have terrible sound so you have to buy a sound bar also. I did my research and and narrowed my choice to the Sony X80J and an LG. We have an LG in the living room and it's fine. We did have to buy a sound bar for the LG. I really love the Sony colors. Also (and this was a huge plus for me), the Sony scans your room and will adjust the sound to your room. In my case the sound is pretty good. So although the Sony is a more expensive TV I didn't need to purchase a sound bar (and I'm kinda picky on sound). But it sounds good. Is it theatre sound? Of course not! But it sounds better than about any TV out of the box. Set up was a little long but not as bad as the LG. It was intuitive enough for me. I've owned this TV for about a month now and love it. For me it was a great purchase.
