Been a fan of 4k gaming ever sinced I had my first 4k monitor 3 years ago. When I finally got my hands on both Xbox series X and PS5 Ive been itching to change my 1080p TV to 4k. So months later I went to Best buy Metrotown and was browsing for 4k tv my first choice was Samsumg 43 4k. Until one of the sales associate there gave me an insight on the differences and best one to used for my new gen consoles and he showed me the Sony X85J UHD 120hz. Showed me some demos and explained why it's suitable for my budget and purpose. Well all I can say is I've been loving the TV so far and my Xbox does Dolby vision and Dolby gaming on this TV which makes the whole immersion and picture quality way better than regular 4k HDR. I think in the near future Sony will give an update for VRR support.

I purchased this TV yesterday, so these are my thoughts and initial impressions. I was lucky enough to finally get a PS5 ordered, and was in search of a smaller television that would meet the specifications of HDMI 2.1, native 120 Hz, and variable refresh rate (VRR). This television does not come with variable refresh rate as of today, but Sony has confirmed it will be added in a future update. Upon unboxing, the TV has a decent weight to it, and it feels very premium and well built. The legs have metal inserts that snap into the television, so no screwdriver is required. All connections are on the left, and if it's wall mounted all ports can be accessed easily. Ports 3 and 4 provide 4K at 120 Hz. Turning on the TV for the first time you will be prompted to sign into your Google account. From there (as long as Google stores your passwords) it will sign you into your WiFi, Netflix, etc. I found the menu system easy to navigate, and switching between the apps and settings felt responsive. Color reproduction is excellent right out of the box. I think this is the first time ever I've just left them the way they are! Image quality is nothing short of stunning. Sound quality is actually very good, but as with any television, a soundbar will provide the best sound. I'm currently using a older Bose Solo soundbar, but I might check out a Sony 2.1 setup in the near future.

Originally purchased the X80J and, while that tv had great picture in bright scenes, black levels and backlight bleed were awful in darker scenes. I exchanged it for the X85J and the difference with the panel in this one is night and day. Dark scenes in shows like The Mandalorian are very accurate and enjoyable with Dolby Vision on this screen. The built-in speakers also sound good and are perfectly adequate for closed spaces like a bedroom or an office. This model is also native 120hz with HDMI 2.1 inputs and VRR support on the way so it is well suited to take advantage of the newest game consoles and PC graphics cards. If you need a 43" tv and are a gamer or enjoy movies/shows with frequent dark scenes, this model is the way to go.

I have a 65" one as well. I'd give this 5 stars if it wasn't a google tv. Everyone always comments in regards to how good the picture quality is and its great for gaming. It has way more features than I use. We rarely have issues, but when we do its google. It would be better if it learned our habits and preferences, but it just wants to push the google agenda. Apple tv and HBO as well as the transgender version MAX work great. Netflix and Amazon have their own buttons as well as Disney which we rarely use and another we don't use. The sound works for us in our home and the larger tv is used for GT7 and a PS5 and they are stunning and beautiful together.

Love the color and experience with this TV. The size is right for my bedroom. The sound quality is good, although I also added a sony soundbar which is very nice.

PS5 4k/120hz. Xbox Series X 4k/120hz Change hdmi external input to enhanced and magic. This display is beautiful, and at this price is even sweeter. Very bright and displays colors accurately with natural light from windows in room. Minimal glare. The gaming mode is fantastic, low input lag. Anxiously waiting the VRR update that has been spoken of. Great job Sony

I just purchased this TV last night. Originally I was going to go with the Samsung QLED, however, until I saw this displayed and spoke to a Best Buy rep. This rep knew everything about TVs. I was shocked what he told me comparing the Samsung TVs to Sony TVs. Hands down I bought the Sony one. I know Sony makes better products when a higher price tag, but they do have higher quality than other TVs. You do get what you pay for. Last night, I hooked up the TV. WOW, I’m very impressed with the setup, quality, features and remote! I love the quick remote buttons like Netflix. That’s awesome! I then hooked up my laptop to HDMI port 1. WOW, my laptop worked very well on this TV. I’m very happy that the sales rep spoke to me only in passing. It was a fluke because he overheard me talking to another sales rep about TVs. He asked me what environment am I’m putting this in. I told him. He said stick with the Sony X85J for a darker room. The contrast and blacks are awesome! Boy was he right! This picture quality is much better than the other brands. The sound is very nice. Sounds like I have a sound bar which I don’t. I love the Google features and apps. If you are on the fence don’t hesitate to get this model. I compared this model to the X80J and this one is better. Better motionFlow, better color contrast and 120 hertz refresh rate is much better than 60 hertz refresh rate. Those are the major differences between the two models. It’s worth the extra money! I’m very happy with this TV and I highly recommend this to anyone! Sony makes products than last a lot longer than more other brands. I got this on sale which really made all the difference in the world. Of course the sale price sold me as well as the features and quality. BTW, ignore the negative reviews this TV works with 4K 120 hertz PC gaming very well. You need to go to settings and make some changes. I think the people are not doing that.

awesome tv. I purchase this set to accompany my ps5 disc version. and Xbox series S. its not oled. but this tv has a beautiful image. this tv has 2 hdmi 2.1, 120hz refresh rate. VRR support. and perfect in my mini man cave.

Great TV overall. I run my PS5 through here and it's perfect at 4k/120. Used it for a while as an external monitor with a MacBook M1 and it was surprisingly good. Great price point for the quality.

TL DR, This is an amazing TV, great for the PS5 and its at a affordable price to, highly recommended I am no expert at Tv's Just an average consumer looking for what's best, and I found this TV to be amazing!!! I am using it for my PS5 and the picture quality is outstanding, currently there are only a couple games currently that take advantage of the 120hz (Dirt 5, Fortnite & Destiny 2 PVP (crucible) and all those gave a smooth experience Extra - At first I didn't know how to turn on the 120hz mode on the TV till I came back here and read on how to do it, thank you for that

This is my second Sony T.V. The one it replaced was a 90’s Trinitron T.V. And still working when they removed it. Yea, Sony. This T.V. Has An extremely clear picture and the colors pop! The sound is fine. The controller is easy to use everything is spaced out so you don’t hit multiple buttons at once. I bought it when it was on sale, so it was a win-win for me. Hope this one is as dependable as the last!

I was upset first night thinking I had the same problem as others posted with no 4K 120hz for my Xbox series x but yes you can. Went to Sony online and here is step by step how to do this and you won’t be disappointed. TV is fantastic and as always need to wait for update to get VRR but you better snag one now before they sell out. Setup the TV to support a 4K 120Hz signal from another device You will need to set the TV HDMI® Signal format to Enhanced format for your source device to recognize the 4K 120Hz capability of the TV. Note: Make sure your device is connected to the HDMI 3 or HDMI 4 input on the TV using the supplied Certified Premium HDMI cable. Select Settings → Watching TV → External inputs → HDMI signal format. Select the input the device is connected to (either HDMI 3 or HDMI 4), and then change the setting to Enhanced format.

Excellent color and lighting. Even the sound from factory speaker's is above average

We bought this TV for my husband to use for his Xbox gaming. Set up was extremely easy to do! My husband was so in love with the picture quality, for his gaming the 120hz made for smoother transitions and game play. Anyone looking for a great gaming TV or even a great movie TV I would highly recommend this one. we are talking about getting one for the living room for movie and regular TV use!

This tv is amazing! I have been looking for a 43in 120hz tv for gaming and this does the job perfectly. The amount of customization for colors and contrasts is awesome and it allows me to fine tune my games to what I like. As far as Netflix and watching movies the colors are bright and vibrant. The sound the tv produces is top notch when I’m just relaxing watching movies.

I got this unit to replace one my son and his college roommate had. It was the most reasonably priced, high quality, true 4K TV I could find. Some are cheaper but not better. They have been very happy with it! They stream internet content to it and do some gaming. (Now they want some big sound!)

I gave it a shot and purchased one of these X85J 43" tv and see if I can use it as a monitor. This is a review for someone like me who is wondering if it can do 4k 120hz on pc. The question is yes and no. It can display 4k 120hz 10bit color 4:4:4, BUT the texts become blurry instantly once you click Apply on Nvidia control panel . The texts look blurry not on 4:4:4, they look blurry on 4:2:2 and RGB model as well. Even n if I lower it 120hz to 100hz, text still look blurry. The ONLY setting where the texts look "normal" is when I set the resolution to 3840x2160 (Native) at 60hz, then the texts look really sharp. I have hooked up the tv with both my custom built RTX 3080 desktop and my 3070 Laptop that both support HDMI 2.1, and I got the same result. I don't have a PS5 or Xbox Series X, so I don't know how the tv works with them, but I can tell you that this tv is not working properly with PCs. I had read the review on Rtings before purchasing this tv and they mentioned about the same thing, but I just wanted to give it a try. Now I know the HDMI ports are broken on this tv just like the X900H. I DID go to settings and enabled the inhanced signal setting on the two HDMI 2.1 ports on the tv, it just DOESN'T work, period. I have no idea when Sony will fix this issue, so I am going to return the tv and wait. Nevertheless, I do have to say the picture quality on this tv is amazing for this price point especially 99% of other 43" tvs are no good. This X85J 43" have picture quality that is close to my 77" CX OLED. Also, for those who wonder this tv has a VA or IPS panel, I can tell you that it has a VA panel as the contrast on it is incredible. It has more depth than my Sony X900F, but even more colorful. In the settting, you can pick sRGB or DCI-P3, it definitely can be used as a monitor for creators. In sum, If you are looking for a tv for watching movies and using it as a 4k 60hz pc monitor, I cannot think of anything else is better than this. The picture quality especially the contrast blows my $1400 43" Asus XG438Q out of the water. Too bad it cannot do 4k 120hz on pc properly at the moment.
