OLED Steal

One of the issues with Smart TVs is the screen can be fine, but the smarts doesn't keep up with the software. We had a few Apps that would not work well on the 2017 Bravia. This TV has all the recent apps and streams are clean and never jerky. The OLED blacks are amazing. Small CONs: The base is a pain to install, as you need to have large flat table with a soft covering to lay it down on. My last Bravia had a central stand that we could just lower the TV onto. I also hate the new tear open boxes vs the previous that had the locking plastic plugs at the base.

We had cordial discussion on the current state of TV technologies across brands that confirmed my research and decision to purchase a Sony BRAVIA XR-55A80J - 55" Series OLED 4K UHD Smart TV. The OLED imaging is everything I expected and more - bright, sharp, true color, spectacular. This is a quality product all around. My only product complaint is there is no ‘User Guide’ - hard copy in the box or online source - that specifies exact control settings to enable (and troubleshoot) features like WiFi, Apple AirPlay, Apps, etc.

Setup for picture was easy. But you must use Google Home to add apps, that was not as straight forward, but works.

Never thought I’d get a Sony but Samsung quality just isn’t what it use to be. This Sony however is incredible. I feel like we need to get another one for living room because the experience is night and day between LED screens. The dimension of the content is so clear. Can’t describe it. You do get kinda of use to it but when you watch on normal tv you remember what you are missing! Lol Also, we normally use a sound bar. But when we are lazy we will use TV speakers and they are very impressive. Very clear and great tone.

A80J or A90J? Is A80J bright enough?

Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed.This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.If you are one of those people who have a hard time deciding if you should get the A80J or A90J, this review may help you. I did a lot of reading and research before I purchased the A80J. What is my biggest concern? 1) Not bright enough. I live in a high rise apartment which has floor to ceiling window located about 5 feet on the right side of my TV. So, I am dealing with a lot of bright light during the daytime. People always say OLED is not bright enough and or does not work well in bright conditions. I found it not true, the image looks fine. 2) A90J is brighter than the A80J. I stand at Best Buy to watch A80J and A90J play the same content many times. It is true if you put them side by side, you can see some difference. However, if you are only going to watch one TV at a time, you will not notice the A80J is that much darker. I decided to buy the A80J to give it a try in my bright room, if it looks too dark, I am going to return it and get the A90J, but it turns out, A80J picture looks great, even in my bright living room. A80J was on sale for $1399, A90J was at $2799, (it is on sale with a $300 discount at this moment Dec.16, 2021) Will the little bit of brightness difference justifies the $1400 difference? I say "No". Don't get me wrong, I can easily afford the A90J, but does it make sense to spend double the money for a little bit of brightness that I don't even notice while I am watching the A80J at home. At least not for me. A90J can also act as a center speaker, I am not going to install surround sound, so it does not make any difference to me. One thing I was not able to compare is the speaker between the two models at Bestbuy. They told me they can not turn the volume on. I know the A90J has double the watts when compared to the A80J, but again, the speakers in the A80J work just fine in my living room, I can't even turn the volume up more than 30% of the max power and it was already too loud. Another difference is the A90J has this new feature called - Heatsink. (i hope I spell it correctly) I can no comment on that because I did not see any burn in on my TV yet. But if you want to just buy the best Sony OLED no matter what, then go for the A90J. Hope my feedback and provide some helps. Happy Watching. I have been using Sony TV for over 35 years.

But I was even more surprised as I watched You've Got Mail, Rava and the Last Dragon, Death in Paradise, and finally Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. These TV shows and movies were as good as what I had seen in the theaters, some even so much better that there is no comparison. Sony's quality is unmatched in my book!

Gorgeous and Refined OLED and great sounds

I haven't used any of the smart features, but the picture is just superb in a dim or dark living room. I went with Sony b/c I like the less-hyped picture -- colors are rich, but realistic (to my eye) vs. other brands. The acoustic surface speaker-in-the-display tech is pretty amazing as well. TV has a tiny bezel with no visible speakers, yet has excellent sound. The only negative thing I will say is that I wish Sony would make their packaging more environmentally friendly -- the amount of un-recyclable EPS foam they use is unnecessary.

This TV Is a Winnner

It really needs a soundbar to get anything more than a minimum sound quality. That's OK because that's the standard today. The good news for me is that if we just use cable TV, which is what we use most of the time, the cable remote we've been using for years will run the TV, soundbar and cable box. The bad news is that, other than very basic setup instruction, there are no instructions - zero - none! There's a video on YouTube but it's only about 3 minutes long and it's mostly a sales pitch. There isn't anything on the Sony website either. It took several trips to the store to ask questions and I'm still not sure know all that we should know. That being said, we're very happy with the TV and would buy it again. Maybe Best Buy could have a class or sell a 15-30 minute video that would give a general explanation of the features of these new TVs.

Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed.This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.fIrst OLED for me coming from a 2017 LED LG, while the image is undeniably better, there are some automatic dimming features that often make the tv noticeably dimmer the longer its on, particularly during longer gaming sessions. This tv also serves as my main monitor and while the image fidelity is incredible there does appear to be some automatic dimming when making an app/web window bigger, which lowers the richness/brightness of an the image or project you might be working on though the fidelity of color is unaffected. overall however the image quality is excellent especially for pure content consumption, though for very long gaming sessions and as a reference/main monitor brightness can definitely be an issue you will encounter.

TV looks amazing...4K movies look even better. Sound is perfect. My only regret is the TV is not broadcast in 4K...but maybe one day? I have it in a well-lit room and you can still see clearly! Not gonna lie, not as good as night time or when complete dark...of course...but, it's amazing, day or night. The way I see it, if you are going to watch TV 2 hrs a day or so, why not see it in the best way possible? Get this TV...I highly recommend!
