Customers are saying

Customers regard the 55" Class BRAVIA XR A80L OLED 4K UHD Smart Google TV (2023) highly for its exceptional picture quality, vibrant colors, and ease of use. Many appreciate the TV's advanced features and overall quality. However, some criticisms focus on the remote control's design and lack of certain buttons, as well as the product's high price point. The overall user experience is largely positive, despite these minor drawbacks.

Decent picture quality, lackluster build quality

Overall the picture is decent. It’s a bit dim for non HDR content, but not terrible. The biggest issue I’ve had is build quality. I returned one for a bent frame along the bottom and screen warping - which I thought was from the frame. The second one also has a very wavy screen - not super noticeable when the TV is on, but reflections highlight how poorly constructed the TV is.

I have a 14 year-old Sony and wanted to finally upgrade. I chose thie A80L over the Sony X90L. The non-OLED X90L was $400 less and looked amazing, but couldn’t compare to the A80L in a side-by-side comparison. The A80L’s picture is amazing and the sound is great. The tv’s sound has almost as much base and clarity as the Roku Streambar that I use. I use a Roku with my tv because Sony isn’t allowed to offer the Spectrum cable application. When I use the Roku, the tv defaults to a Dolby Vision picture mode which looks great. In my opinion, this tv gets plenty bright, but it definitely isn’t like the ridiculously bright oversaturated “excit-o-vision” I see in other televisions. If you get this tv, I would recommend turning the contrast down to a setting of 90, just as RTINGS.com suggests. My favorite aspect of this tv is how good it makes streaming content look. As other reviews have mentioned, the remote is quite narrow, but is nicely textured on the back.

I read many reviews on this model versus the older XR A80k and ultimately went with this one (2023 model), despite the older model being similar and slightly less expensive. The upgrades, though not extensive, result in an exceptional product at a more reasoanble proce point than Sony’s latest A90 OLED. I have a full array LED sony from 2020 and the color reproduction on this one blows the LED away. Some reviews noted brightness, this tv is now in our living room where we have only light filteringshades, not blackput curtains. This tv handles glade better than I expected after reading reviews. While bot as thin as some LG models, the sound on this set is just incredoble for a TV, easily the best I’ve seeen. Had considered a spund bar, but honeslty dont believe it is needed. Very happy.

We bought this A80L to replace our Sony Bravia 49" TV that was a few years old. We bought this particular Sony A80L because of the reviews and were impressed with what was said about its sound using the screen. It delivered what we expected. The picture is beautiful and the sound is better than any flatscreen TV we have had. You can even hear the low bass coming from this TV. Our old Sony had to be turned up to 30 to hear it and it was rather muddy sounding. This new one only needs to be up to 20 or 25 for clear sound. We can actually understand what people are saying without the closed caption turned on. Despite some reviews saying it lacked brightness we found it brighter and clearer than our old Sony Bravia which was also a 4K TV.

I've had this Bravia XR A80L for almost two weeks now. It works well in my basement. I was concerned about brightness options, since my previous TV was also a 55" model, from Samsung (1080i model). This Bravia offers specific brightness settings, and I'm good with the one I chose. This Bravia is my first 4K. The 4K program options on broadcast TV (via my YouTube TV) are quite limited for now, but no worries...the picture for regular TV shows & streaming is already nice & sharp. Also...I bought a new Sony receiver, and I'm going without an Apple TV device on this TV. I'm still kind of getting the hang of using just "one" remote for everything, but so far I'm okay with it. The initial setup was easier than expected. I did have help from the Best Buy Geek Squad rep on the setup, but for the most part the setup was done in mere minutes.

This review is based on my comparisons between LG and Sony OLED's. I own a G3, C3 and now a A80L. This was purchased for my parents because they like the Google UI and it met my budget, but I regret not buying an open box C3/C4 or G3. I originally paid the same price for the G3 (open-box) as the A80L. Image quality: The upscaling isn't as good as I thought it would be for viewing Youtube content even at 4K and following recommendations from Sony/forms regarding the settings. UI: Easily the best UI on the market. It's simple to use (once you're finished with the 15-20 minute setup). Very snappy and responsive even for a TV that's a year old. Getting into the menu while watching content is nice and the ability to cast is simple. My folks love how easy it is to stream from their desktops or mobile devices. Sound: Surprisingly very good all things considered for a TV speaker. I was ready to buy a soundbar for my folks but in a medium sized room it holds its own pretty well and I'm impressed. Remote: Easy to use, kinda small so if you have big hands it might be a small gripe for you. Buttons are have a simple layout although they are also very small. I found myself pressing two buttons at once and I have smaller sized hands. Brightness: I'm a little disappointed here because I expected better from an OLED, but even with the power saving off and tweaking the settings it's just enough for me to consider keeping it. If you need a TV that's going to be in a well-lit room I'd consider something from LG's lineup. All in all, if I could go back I'd go with the LG B4 over this. I just happened to get the Sony for a pretty good price and it's for my parents. If you're considering this, I'd recommend looking elsewhere but make sure you do your due diligence and research beforehand. My parents love the TV and it meets their standards.

After 1 month with this TV, I have found no significant issues and the usability is great with the Google tv interface. The sound quality is exceptional for TV speakers. Like with most mid-range OLED TVs, the brightness leaves a little bit to be desired in a brighter room. If you have curtains or shades, or just watch things when its darker out, this isnt really a problem at all since it still gets plenty bright. The picture quality, color vibrance, and motion handling are all great in my experience so far. For gaming, one warning if you have multiple next-gen consoles or a PC, only 2 of the HDMI ports are 2.1 compatible. This is more of a future proofing concern I think, but worth noting anyway. Input lag is apparently higher for this TV when gaming compared to other similar valued OLED TVs, but I havent noticed anything significant during my time playing. I would recommend this TV for most when its on sale as the brightness and only having 2 HDMI 2.1 ports drops the value down lower compared to other similar priced OLED TVs that are brighter or have more HDMI 2.1 ports.

Some reviews say its a bit dark, but i must say, i have NOT had that experience. It has been perfect. Im also uding the TV along with the Sony sound bar A7000 and rear speakers and subwoofer. The TV has been configured to be the "center" speaker....and as a package, its perfect. The sound is AMAZING

And boy it delivers personally don't like a tv that is too bright as I have problems with my eye sight at night and this tv is not that bright and I did loved that it doesn't hurt my eyes as much because it's not too bright. I bundled this up with the Sonos Arc, Sub & Era 300s & man, what a nice addition to my man-cave...just in time for football season. Highly recommend! Added bonus, bought it at $200 off regular retail & since then there were 2 sales: $300 off then $400 off. These sales were all within the period where I could make price adjustments. Sweet!

I made the switch from a 2020 LG 4K TV (mid range) and the OLED from Sony is a huge improvement. I chose Sony because their new tech that prevents screen burn in is in cheaper TVs than LG. I also like the Bravia/Google platform as its very useful. I have this set up with my Xbox Series X and a Samsung Q930C soundbar system. The only issue is that this doesnt support VRR and Dolby Vission at the same time. It does support Atmos at all times provided you have Atmos content. One nice thing is that the Tidal app on Bravia actually plays atmos content.

Picture quality is excellent. When the techs were going through the initial setup of the TV, Dark Knight was on. I was blown away by the picture quality. The blacks were actually black, and the colors were incredible. My receiver and feed was still 1080p, but that never looked this great on my previous 1080p TV. Even the sound is good. This is a great TV from Sony. To be honest, I went into Best Buy after doing research and was leaning toward a Samsung Q80C or S90C. As someone who loves Best Buy and looking at TV's, I'll share my thoughts about the TVs. The Samsungs were nice, and one was less expensive, but I wasn't a fan of how thin the screen on the S90C was. I also didn't a QLED and they don't have Dolby Vision. The S90C screen was almost paper thin. I moved the tv to look at the back and it wobbled and flexed, which concerned me a little. Some might desire that, but it seemed risky to me. I talked to the reps and they shared pros and cons about the Samgungs and I mentioned my research about the Sonys. I didn't want LG, Fire, or TCL and know some folks love big TVs and low prices, but I wanted quality. The Sony A80L is an amazing OLED. The picture is great. Some folks think the Samsungs are better because they can be brighter, but after some tweaks on the TV, its perfect for my liking. Super bright doesn't mean better. Make sure you pick the TV right for you and your room. I think the Sony has a better user interface and everything on cable looks great. Hit the Netflix button and it pops up super fast and plays immediately. PS5 looks amazing as does anything streaming like Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon. This Sony is designed to show you what things are intended to look like. I have it paired with a Sony sound bar and its perfect. I'm very happy with my purchase, especially after researching for weeks and pulling the trigger during the black Friday sales. Go into the store and play around and pick what works best for you. TV's are not created equal :)

Excellent so far! Picture is fantastic, sound is better than we anticipated. Easy set up. Love how the TV sincs to my phone and my favorite photos cycle as a screen saver. What we did have to do is modify the surface it sits on wider. Rather than a more centered stand, the legs mount at almost the very sides. If you are mounting on a wall it’s not an issue. We don’t have that option.

The A80L is an amazing oled. The contrast and colors are great. This oled is great for rooms that dont have a ton of natural light hitting the screen. If you want to put an oled in a bright room the samsung s90c, LG G3, or sony A95l would be a better choice. The speaker quality is pretty impressive but i would still recommend a soundbar if you want the best experience. I reccomend turning off motionflow and keeping cinemotion on high. This will remove jutter in movies but wont give soap opera effect. Also highly recommend turning off contrast and black level enhancer as well as noise reduction settings since these settings will reduce the overall sharpness and quality. Keep smooth gradation on low. If you want the most accurate color in films i recommend expert 1 for the color temperature. If you want more vivid color turn on cool color temperature. Also turn off live color. Change all these settings under the custom picture mode. For animated movies i reccomended using the vivid picture mode. Overall this tv is amazing
