Groups of Dead Pixels Out of the Box

Disappointing brightness and reflection handling, but also defective out of the box with GROUPS of dead pixels. Going to return as soon as I get a chance to go to the story. Pros: * Google TV setup is still the best in the business. Really easy to do. * VRR and solid gaming features after the most recent updates. Cons: * Brightness is just okay. Don't want to put this by a window or use in an overly bright room. * Reflection handling is quite poor. Another problem in a room with any windows. * Off-axis viewing skews colors badly.

Hi Chadwick, While we're glad you like the Google TV setup, VRR, and gaming features of this TV, we regret to hear about the picture-related issues such as brightness, reflection, and dead pixels that you've experienced. This is usually not the case for our TVs nor the experience we want you to have.
There are various settings that you can configure in [Picture] settings to reduce the glare/reflection and increase the brightness and contrast level to improve the viewing experience on your Google TV. You may refer to the link below for more information about the picture adjustment settings of the TV:

      REF: https://helpguide.sony.net/tv/iusltn1/v1/en-003/01-03-09_01.html

With regards to the dead pixels, what you may be seeing is one or more of the greater than 2,000,000 dots that make up the composition of your LCD or OLED screen. These dots (also known as pixels) may appear red, green, blue, white or black.

High-precision technology is used to manufacture LCD and OLED displays to maintain a high standard of operation. However, with all LCD/OLED screens, regardless of manufacturer, there may be a small number of dots that do not change color. This is normal operation for LCD and OLED screens for all manufacturers. Most defects are only noticeable when an all-white or all-black picture is displayed and shouldn't be noticeable under normal operation.

Because a defective pixel or pixels is normal on all LCD or OLED screens, there's a high chance that a replacement screen may also have them. It's possible that the replacement could have more defective pixels or the pixels may appear in a more noticeable position.

      Notes:
Debris on the screen can appear as dead or defective pixels. Clean the screen thoroughly with a soft, dry cloth to confirm whether or not the issue is actually a defective pixel or due to just dirt or debris.
Sometimes dead or defective pixels correct themselves over time.

Always had Samsung TV's, thought I would try a Sony back in april. Bad mistake! This month of October, the screen has gone black 2-3 times a day (but I still hear the sound of the program I was watching), and I have to un-plug the TV for a minute, then plug back in and then I have my picture back. Everything is fine UNTIL the next time it happens again, and again, and again week after week. Chatted with Sony support, they make you go thru all the same steps I tried using Sony's troubleshooting website before (Unplug tv then plug back up, reset to factory defaults, have support person use a code to get into your tv remotely and that fails, etc, etc.). It is so apparent there is a bad main board causing this, and I will have to pull teeth just to get them to send a tech guy out to fix it. See my photo: I'm watching program, then screen goes black but still has audio, and you see the bright white line down the left side of screen. It's like my picture has reduced down to a 1/4" screen down the side. Guess I will have to call them in person to scream at them to send Tech repair!

This is hands down the best TV I've ever owned and a lot of bang for the buck! I'm a hardcore gamer, playing both the PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles, as well as Nintendo Switch, on a regular basis. The HDMI 2.1 allowing 4k @120hz is the main reason I picked this up. What I didnt expect was the incredible contrast allowed by the local dimming. It makes such a huge difference with HDR content! I didn't know what I was missing out and I find myself rewatching shows and replaying games just to see the difference. It's amazing! The 120hz 4k cannot be underestimated. It decreases input lag while increasing the overall smoothness of the image. Just incredible. Games play so much smoother and input lag is virtually non existent, which is huge in games like Halo, Forza, and Horizon. The one downside is that you will have to play with the settings to get it just right. You'll have to turn the enhanced HDMI features on in the input menu and make sure you're using a good enough HDMI cable. The ones that come with the new gen consoles are 2.1 so they'll work just fine. But I also had to turn up the brightness and color to get it just right for me. I love the vividness of the color once it's up around 85, with the benefit of the gaming mode you get the best of both worlds. The game modes on other tvs i have owned make the colors looked washed out and the brightness becomes an issue. Not here though! I am happy to say you get the best of both. I get the vivid color, smooth image, low input lag, and best of all, the bright brights and deep darks afforded but the local dimming tech. Sony really outdid themselves here and I couldn't be happier with my purchase! I did get the TV while it was on sale, I really feel like the image quality is high -end $3k plus quality, but at under $1k this thing is a great buy. One last thing I will mention is the Android/Google Smart Features. Ive used Roku for years so I was skeptical of switching, but I am glad I did. Setup was super easy and I can't get over how much faster everything feels on this TV. Switching between apps is nearly instant! I didn't realize how slow the Roku platform was until I started using this! But wow what a difference! I don't write many reviews, but I just had to let anyone on the fence know that this thing is amazing and a definite Best Buy! As a bonus, you get 5 free movies from the Bravia Core app, which is just sweet icing on an already tasty cake! It's not some lame list of really old movies either! Brand new, big budget movies. 5 of them. Totally free. That's just awesome, as is everything else with this thing.

I wanted to get a TV for the PS5 and to replace my 2018 TCL 617, was a fantastic TV for its price. I was looking at the C1 Oled, 48 inch, because that does indeed have the better picture quality compared to this, but it was also $100 more for a TV 7 inches smaller. Its amazing what this TV can pull off with just 24 dimming zones. I did a test of this in Uncharted 4, where Nate and Sam are in a basement, and you use a lighter to get around in the dark. On the TCL 617, which has 4 times as many dimming zones and actually gets brighter, there was obvious blooming and clouding around the lighter. On this TV, practically no clouding whatsoever, despite the low count of zones. Sony's tone mapping algorithm is really second to none, everything in a game that needs to be emphasized in HDR gets properly lit up, providing an amazing balanced image. I'm currently playing Horizon Forbidden West and its incredible looking. The Sun just pops and it's just a super clean, yet punchy image. I played all the way through RE: Village on this TV in a dark room and the black level performance is fantastic for the most part. Obviously if you're coming from OLED, it won't seem that amazing, but that should go without saying. Some other recent TVs that have more dimming zones might perform better in super contrasty type scenes but won't have such a balanced image. This TV has zero black crush as well, as far as I can tell. Another amazing thing this TV does too is the upscaling. 1080p content essentially looks 4k. Choose "Custom" picture settings for the best image quality, it's awesome the TV is basically calibrated outside the box. The Google TV too is very snappy on this. You can go in and out of apps super quick (barring a decent wi-fi connection). Overall though, if you want an excellent overall TV for general use and also gaming, this is a fantastic purchase. Don't expect super inky blacks all the time obviously and it could use more dimming zones. But having fewer dimming zones with a better HDR algorithm is better than more dimming zones with a much worse algorithm. Fantastic buy for $998 for the 55inch.

It took three the first two had bad bezels on the back and light shining through minor issues but for a thousand you want a TV that's put together right. Besides the plastic bezels and one of them having poor Wi-Fi connection the TV is absolutely amazing I had the 958 before this but I was in a house fire and lost everything. If you're thinking of stepping up to the x950j opposed to the x90j it's just a waste of money brighter screen more saturated colors this TV just doesn't and it does it well I'm running an ax80 nighthawk Netgear router which does get Wi-Fi 6 or ax. And I downloaded the downloader then the Troy point app and have everything available to my disposal now movies TVs it's like having a TiVo with unlimited storage movie HD is probably one of the best apks you can download for your TV you can do it on your phone as long as your Android and not iOS. A few others are STRIX, bee tv , and a bunch more you can also add Pluto peacock and zumo TV right to your regular TV ad since you're not using cable well I'm not and not paying for it. Those are 100% free apps along with all the other ones that I've listed but you can download them straight from the Google Play store and you just hit the TV button and it'll pull up channels and basically like an old TV guide or spectrum menu and I'll tell you what's playing at what time you can do live TV you can do pre-recorded TV and movies the entertainment is endless. Along with that if you tune the TV correctly you will not get blooming I recommend as soon as you get it you go to YouTube and run the red green and blue test on it it's just YouTube video where it runs a red screen blue screen and green screen and that way you can see if there's any dead pixels burning etc and mine were perfect all three TVs. Now I'll give you the best settings you can do this on everyone I'm on Cinema so brightness you never need to go above 35 light sensor you want off contrast 90 gamma 0 Black level take it from 50 and lower it to 45. Black adjust off advanced contrast enhancer off or low, Auto local dimming medium or low (that's what's going to be controlling your full array backlighting) peak luminance luminance off or low low will make it brighter color 55 to 60 color temperature warm hue 0 live color medium , sharpness on everything 45 to 40 nothing above 50 and everything below that off reality creation off, random noise reduction off digital noise reduction off smooth gradation off and then on motion flow you want that off that can cause digital sickness. I hope that helps some of you so you can set it up really easily and sometimes when you're on Cinema and you go into say prime video or something like that it'll automatically change the mode to IMAX enhanced which is phenomenal and then when you go into HDR it's automatic you don't have to mess with any of the settings it comes out pretty even though everything is maxed out it just looks really really good though

I decided to get a new TV primarily for gaming and since this has HDMI 2.1, 120hz capabilities I was sold. Now for a bit of a story, I actually started out on the 50 inch model of this TV, but they had, issues... The first one had damage from shipping and needed returned, the second one, had banding all over the place, the third one had internet connection issues then flat out died after 2 days, then the fourth one had dead pixels in the center of the screen. Honestly I was frustrated because I loved the TV, but after getting so many lemons, I decided to get the LG C1 everyone raves about. Hated it. It had a garish blue light that killed my eyes, 30 fps content looked awful, and the fear of burn in was too much for me, so I returned it and decided to try the X90J again, but in the 55 inch size. Again though I had issues, dead pixels on 2 models, before I finally got one that was clean. Now you're probably asking yourself "Why go through all of this and not just get a different TV" because this thing, when you get a good one, is amazing. It has a feature on it called "Reality Creation" and that's Sony's upscaling technology. This feature makes old content look new again. If you play a lot of older games from the PS3/Xbox 360 era or before, this will make your games look remastered at 4K, and will even make your next gen systems look even better too. The 120hz is buttery smooth and works flawlessly on PS5 and Series X, Dolby vision looks incredible in movies that support it, the Google TV interface is smooth and packed with features, it has Apple airplay, and is just all around a fantastic TV. If it wasn't for the woeful quality control issues I encountered, the easily would be a 5 star rating, but I have to knock it down a few pegs for the hassle I went through. Shout out to Best Buy too for being so understanding and great with the returns. If you get this TV, immediately go on Youtube and look up a dead pixel finder, and do a banding test, then go to Rtings and check their calibration settings and you'll be good to go.

This is a great Smart TV. Picture quality is fantastic, with very little to complain about. On the Smart TV side of things, over two years after release, it's still getting regular updates. The software has gotten more stable, but there are times when the interface seems to lock up, and the only way to get it functioning again is to unplug/plug in the television. It happens rarely (happened more when I first got the tv), but it is a bit annoying. Still, I'm very happy with my purchase.

I decided I also wanted 120 hz refresh rate, 4k and vivid color. Several brands offer these points. I chose Sony for the good price and the quality of their product. I'm very happy with my choice. I have a teacher from high school I remained in touch with over the years. I am 70 so that tells you something. He is a member of a religious order and they just great guys! I got them a 55" Samsung a few years ago. They found the interface difficult to get used to and despise universal remotes. The Samsung went south after 3 years so decided to replace it with a Sony, and after some research would up with this Sony. Glad I made the choice. Very smooth picture for sports (they watch tennis constantly) and my guess is the native 120 hz helps with that. Picture is uniform with no bright spots and the color is absolutely gorgeous. And they absolutely love the remote. They can control cable TV, streaming and other functions easily from this one Sony remote. They could not be happier, and neither could I, as I loved the TV so much I went out and got the 65" for my bedroom to replace my 6 year old Sony 850D. My wife and I absolutely love this Sony, and it exhibits the same high points described above for the 55" model. I know people rave about OLEDs but I will not buy one. I have been visited by the burn-in bug and no matter what is done to lessen the risk it is still there. And I actually prefer the picture from the LEDs. Great job on this one, Sony!

I purchased this about 2 months ago and I can say this is hard to beat. The picture is absolutely stunning, given that you have a stable internet connection. There are several different picture modes and motion settings which can be altered to your liking. Setup is simple and painless and runs on Google TV for those of you interested in smart home setups. Sound is fine, eventually purchased a soundbar to use the eARC port which I consistently have problems with. Almost every time I turn on the TV it will display that it is switching to external audio, but it will constantly switch back and forth from external to TV speakers for several minutes until I can finally change it manually. Might need to switch to digital optical instead. Biggest complaint is the remote control. This is unnecessarily large with several buttons that I don’t use and uncomfortable to operate with one hand. If these issues or price does not bother you though, this is a nice choice.

I would have held out for the Sony X95J, but I only have space for a 55 and since the X95J is only available in 65" and larger, this left the X90J. The TV has an incredible picture. It's a step up over the 950G for sure. The contrast and black levels are much better. I don't use this TV for gaming, but TV and movies look amazing. The new GoogleTV is a step up over stock AndroidTV, but that's not a reason to get this TV. The Bravia Core streaming service is interesting. The high-quality 4k streaming really shows off what the TV can do. As for sound, get a sound bar. The TV speakers are probably fine, but even a cheap sound bar will be far better. I snagged the Sony HT-G700 given the discount when buying with a Sony TV. It's significantly better than the TV speakers. The slightly older X950H and X900H are probably better values as of Spring 2021, but if you want the latest and greatest, this X90J is an excellent choice.

Hi rjm445, We chose the right TV for your needs and we are glad that you are happy with it. Powered by our Cognitive Processor XR, this TV reproduces color in a way that humans find beautiful. By precisely balancing the light output across the screen, dimming some areas, and boosting others, XR Contrast Booster adjusts brightness for higher peaks in glare and deeper blacks in shadow. We value your input and appreciate your feedback. Thank you so much for your feedback and for choosing Sony! Enjoy your movie nights! -Vincent Sony_US

Where can I start? Tv is awesome. The picture quality is great. The sound too. I’ll buy eventually a sound bar to take advantage of full capabilities. You can download any 3rd party apps which is cool. I added retro arch where you can game all the old school games like nes, Super Nintendo, atari, genesis, ps1 ps2. I use my PS4 controller with retro arch. My only concern is the internal memory I believe it’s about 4.4gb so you can’t download a lot of apps. Maybe you can add more memory with an external not sure. The gaming with ps5 is nice too. The colors pop nicely. I love this tv. It has tons of features. I feel like I made the right purchase and I feel real good about it.

Good color and lighting - no major washout. Sound for dialog is good with Dialog mode and equalizer adjustment in mid range. Google TV interface works well and not buggy in general on this TV.

This TV is a overall great choice for those who watch lots of TV shows and movies, as well any gamers looking for a 4k 120hz TV. The experience from the start is a pleasure, I think Google TV is one of the best smart TV platforms currently available, offering almost all the apps you’d ever want while being user friendly and smooth as butter to use. Now for what I didn’t really like about this TV, and why I ended up going OLED. Firstly, although this TV supports 4k 120, it still lacks any sort of VRR (variable refresh rate) that it’s competitors offer. Sony has said they will implement these in a future update, but do keep in mind, they said the same thing for last years X900H, and they still haven’t updated that tv. My second issue stems to the nature of a VA panel, in its viewing angles being sub-par and unless you are the only viewer sitting straight on, you will notice the color shift from even just a few degrees off. On the topic of VA panels and really just LCD’s in general, the screen uniformity on my unit was bad, although I have seen worse. There is visible banding going on and the corners appear noticeably dimmer. This shouldn’t be extremely noticeable under most conditions, but people who watch lots of sports or play video games will likely notice it. The black uniformity on VA’s is also generally poor. Sony has implemented local dimming zones to help improve these limitations, however in my viewing (which generally was in a darker room) there was noticeable blooming in many instances. The black bars on movies particularly and space scenes stand out the most. If you plan on using this tv in a more well lit environment, this likely wont bother you as much. Since I watch in near dark rooms most of the time, as well as watch movies and shows with others, I found this TV just wasn’t going to cut it for my needs. The ports are also a place of disappointment, as you only get 2 HDMI 2.1 ports, one of which is your EARC, which leaves 1. I didn’t test the speakers that extensively, but I would certainly recommend a sound bar or some other form of audio, as they sounded lacking. What I will say, this TV is still great, providing great colors and brightness, and still an unmatched operating system that I wish more competitors would adopt. If you’re looking for the best gaming tv, I would honestly recommend looking elsewhere, until Sony delivers on their promises about VRR. Overall, as said in the title, the TV is excellent, but depending on your setup and use cases, it may not be the best option.

After looking at expert reviews for half a dozen other models, I came across this gem. On paper the X90J leaves behind the competitors for the same price. Have had it for over one month now. Perfect screen size for our living room. The visuals and sound are fantastic. Colors are vibrant. Blacks are deep thanks to the local array dimming. Google TV OS is fantastic. Any words on screen are super sharp. Only minor complaints - it could be a bit brighter. Visible glares do show up if we keep our blinds open and it's sunny out. So daytime is not the best time for viewing but still manageable. It is also not as sleek as some of the other models but still thin enough that it doesn't look bulky. And the remote control is dumb. Sorry not sorry, Sony. Its quite easy to use (unlike those for some of the Samsung models), but does the remote really have to be a foot-long? That's how I like my sandwiches, not electronics. All in all, have no regrets with my purchase so far.

I have a little over 2 years of experience with this TV. It is a phenomenal picture and great value. The sports on this TV look better than my LG B2. It's a little thicker than your average OLED but that's because it's an LED. The sound quality isn't top tier but I have a soundbar to go with it. Overall, extremely satisfied with this TV.
