The first one I purchased, the tv had a 3 inch wide vertical bar that ran from the top of the screen to the bottom. See attached picture. This started as a flicker and then became permanent. Thank goodness the tv was within its warranty period. I was connected with Sony’s concierge service. They ordered me a replacement. Keep in mind I started the process on 11/1/21 and didn’t get the replacement until today: 12/15. This was in no part due to a lack of response from me. I was immediate to respond to all of their questions. It just took that long. I set up the new tv today and to my disappointment this one is defective as well. There is a huge magenta colored blob in the middle of the screen with another small patch right above it. I emailed Sony’s team with this news. I can’t wait to see what hoops I need to just through to replace this one. Don’t they have any quality control? What a waste of time and resources. There are other brands out there that can compete with Sony. I think my 20 year loyalty to them is coming to an end after this experience. I cannot in good faith recommend this product since I got 2 bad TVs in a row. If they weren’t defective, the picture quality actually does look pretty good for a tv in this price range. Brightness seems fine for what we were using it for. Sound is typical for built in flat panel speakers - they are quite tinny. Nothing special. A sound bar is recommended.

It had a vertical white line on its panel. I requested a replacement and Best Buy is going to replace that on December 10. So another long wait.

Bad Black Uniformity

There was a dead pixel. The sound with just the TV speakers in atrocious, you must have a sound bar. I've included pictures of this TV displaying an all black youtube video and a picture of the 11 year old Vizio that was half the price this tv was supposed to replace showing the same video so you can see the difference in not only the darkness of the black but also a little of the uneveness. It's worse in person.

My 7yr Vizio has more clarity & better contrast

Over priced and really milking the brand. The contrast is horrible with a grainy clarity whether using the cable box, downloaded apps or the fire stick. Almost no difference when adjusting picture setting. Its hard to get the right info when researching these types of products. I strongly recommend you buy something else.

Great Budget-Friendly TV For Everyday Use

Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed.This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.We needed an inexpensive additional TV for our home and wanted it to have the same Google TV software we fell in love with on our Sony A80J, so we picked up the X80J during a great sale. It's very hard being objective about an LED TV after you've spent the past few months in OLED heaven but I'll do my best. Build Quality: The first thing I noticed was how flimsy this TV feels. Cheap plastic, thick bevels, constant buckling at seams where the shell is snapped together in place. You can literally feel this TV bending like a sail in the wind when you handle it. Setup: Easy peezie lemon squeezie. Mostly automated via the Google Home iOS/Android app. One tiny nitpick is that the first-time setup doesn't automatically check for OS updates. After setup was complete I got about 10 minutes into watching a show when a notification popped up to say a system update was available. In an ideal world the TV would check for updates immediately after connecting to the internet, before any other settings were changed. The OS update undid a few personalizations I made to the menus. Inputs: Standard fare, glad to have an eARC port. No support for 120Hz, ALLM, or VRR so you won't be able to get the most of out of your next-gen consoles. When switched to Enhanced Mode though it does support Dolby Vision signals from Xbox Series X and DV capable Blu-Ray players. Panel/Backlight: Something I will never miss about LED backlit televisions are the bright spots found along the edges where the bevel is placing uneven pressure on the panel. This specific unit had a really bad spot in the bottom left corner and a smaller one on the bottom right. After a decent amount of jimmying around the bevel I was able to turn the big white backlight blob into more of soft haze that just peeks over the bevel. I will notice and obsess over its annoyance every time that part of the screen is black for as long as I have this TV. Picture Quality: Like I said, coming off the OLED I really can't tell if I have genuine, warranted criticisms or if this is just how mid-tier LED TVs are supposed to look. While watching sitcoms, animated shows, or anything I'm not visually invested in, the TV performs well and I find myself thinking "man this is a pretty great little TV." However it falls short with HDR & Dolby Vision content in media and games. Though the color reproduction seems accurate, the image appears flat and lifeless - like a matte finish was overlayed. It may be able to decode Dolby Vision but it certainly doesn't showcase any of its visually arresting benefits. Overall: I'm happy with my purchase and would recommend it to my friends. It is probably the perfect TV the average consumer and general use, but likely disappointing for those wishing to take full advantage of HDR10, Dolby Vision, and next-gen consoles. The colors are natural and neutrally saturated. Google TV is awesome and in my opinion the best TV OS/user interface. Built-in Chromecast and Apple AirPlay make it effortless to stream/cast from any phone to the TV. Did I mention how great Google TV is? I only use the built-in speakers and the sound is above average, no need for separate speakers/soundbar. Remote is easy to use and Google TV is much better smart TV option because Google keeps the apps updated. I have a Samsung TV and there are no longer any relevant apps available in Samsung store, I had to buy a Firestick to use my Samsung as a Smart TV.

Great Sony Color, Wide-Angle Viewing, ATSC 3.0

Very sharp picture even after I set the TV’s sharpness setting to zero. Very easy setup if you have a google account. I like the use of QR Codes to log into my Google TV apps. Okay, I know this TV doesn't give you the pure blacks of an OLED or even the X90J, but I bought it for $699 not $1400 to $2900!! When I watch TV broadcast or streaming program or movie, I see dark black, when I walk up to the screen and look at it from 12 inches, yes, it's grayish not “true black,” but from viewing distance of 6 to 8 feet it looks very black, blacker than the TVs plastic black frame. Our TV is located in a very bright family room with massive windows and we have a very wide seating arrangement, that’s the main reason we didn’t go with an OLED or the X90J. The X80J has better wide-angle viewing than the X90J and is a bit brighter than an OLED. However, we are a bit disappointed in the TV’s handling of glare/reflection coming from our windows. The X80J comes with a very nice large Bluetooth/IR remote, but it would be nice if Sony provided a second small remote like the one some Samsung TVs have. The X80J is also the cheapest TV that comes with a NEXGEN TV/ATSC 3.0 tuner built in. I scanned for broadcast channels during setup and picked up the ATSC 3.0 channels along with the ATSC 1.0 sister channel. The TV’s channel guide defaulted to the 1.0 channel, so I had to manually shift the channel list/guide to the ATSC 3.0 channel. Soon broadcast TV channels will start broadcasting in 4K on 3.0 versus 720p/1080i on the current 1.0 TV tuners. I realize past TV durability isn’t a guarantee for future durability, but I have found my Sony TVs last over 10 years and my Samsung TVs die after 4 or 5 years.

Very pleased with the purchase and on sale for a great price. Only wish with these large TVs that they would have a pedestal rather than legs that are wide apart that will not fit on many TV stands. I had to buy a very nice and reasonably priced pedestal stand to attach to the TV. Very quality set of legs went to waste but too far apart to use on my TV stand.

Extremely easy set up with Google TV. Had to tweak “advanced” color bars to tone down the brilliant color that was overwhelming, but once completed to our liking the picture quality and color far exceeded expectations compared to LG previously owned but flames out. What is magnificent about this TV is the balance between picture quality, ease of use and price point. Surely it’s more expensive than TCL and Hisense alternatives, but I’ve installed many Samsung and LG high end OLED and QLED sets that are really not much better quality than this...and this is the new entry level Sony?!? Very happy with this combined with SONY 3.1 SoundBar.
