Below average TV at a GOOD price.

I have been skeptical of this unit since there have been so many reviews saying that this unit is only 60 hertz. If you type in the actual TV code KDL60R510A, and check out the Sony website, it will show you they have updated the information to say 120 hertz. I do not know if the unit is 60 or 120, all I can say is that the picture looks pretty darn good for the most part. A lot of this review has to do with me having this screen plugged into my computer as a 3rd screen, therefor I don’t use any of the internet apps and simply play everything from my computer. I’ve had this TV for 5 days now and here is what I can tell you. Pros: + Great picture at default settings + Pretty nice contrast range + A beautiful screen with a thin bezel, this thing “Looks nice/expensive”. Cons: - Lack of picture modes, only 3. (Vivid, Standard, Custom) - LAG when hooked up to my computer. The lag on this screen compared to TV’s I have used in the past is seriously noticeable. - Inability to change the picture mode when hooked up to a computer. It just says “Graphics” and will not let me change the picture settings. In other words, I can’t change the brightness, contrast and other things while being used as a monitor! (may take back for this reason alone) Please keep in mind I am not by any means a “TV Expert.” This is just a review by an average guy looking for a good TV at a competitive price. Is this TV bad for only 650.00? No, but it’s not some sort of once in a lifetime amazing deal either. Although this is a good price for a 60 Inch LED TV, it’s not the only good price out there. There is a lot of competition for Black Friday, and I think with a little more research, you could find a better buy for your money.

Faulty Product, 2X in a row

Now, for all reading, this TV review may not be "fair" to the TV model itself, as I'm sure a non-defective one would have been a great TV. However, that was not my experience. So first I'll review the good things about this TV: I ordered this TV for Black Friday 2014 through BestBuy.com and had it delivered. Once set up, the TV looked nice. The TV is very thin, has great picture once settings are tweaked, and has adequate ports (3 HDMI and 1 shared Composite/AV for your older systems). The Smart features I can't comment on, as I didn't get around to using them. But it does have access to Netflix, Pandora, etc. The Bad: My TV, both my first one I had delivered and the replacement, had the same defect. On the right side of the screen there was a faint black/gray line that would appear on certain DVDs. Now I have to specify this, because on Blu-Rays, video games, and some DVDs this line wouldn't appear and the picture would be perfect. But with certain media (1 in 2 DVDs I put in which actually filled the entire screen) this line would appear whenever it was on a mid-tone color. I first noticed it while watching the DVD version of the Walking Dead season 4. Many others have had this defect on this model TV, and it would seem that this TV, in terms of quality, is the lowest that Sony has produced in a long time. Now it may not seem like much due to its appearance only on certain media (no Blu-Rays showed this), I'd advise that if the TV shows this defect to return it. There's no telling when a defect will spread, and one line may become many or an entire bar. For me, it was too expensive to settle for a defective product. Additionally, on some video games when you rotate the screen around your character slowly there was distortion on either side of the screen about a 1/4" thick. ---- So if you get this TV, try various media on it and make sure your screen doesn't display this problem. If I had gone for a 3rd version of this TV and it was defect-free I would have been very satisfied. However, I was tired of the process and chose a different TV entirely. The picture was great once I tweaked the settings, and the Smart features were adequate from what I could tell. But beware, it would seem a lot of these model TVs are defective and you may have to deal with returns/exchanges.

Hello Thomas, thank you for your message. That is unfortunate to hear that you are experiencing some difficulties with your SONY TV in an issue that is not common on this particular model number of TV. If the line has appeared in certain external sources like a DVD player, you may probably need to change wires to make sure they work properly or troubleshoot all the units to clarify which devices are having the issue. I kindly share with you the following link to perform some troubleshooting: https://us.en.kb.sony.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/42981. Best regars, Oscar.Sonystyle

Brought this home today, was advertised as a 120hz tv (motionflow 240). The picture was great, as expected, but I quickly noticed your average 60hz motion blur/ ghosting, which is why I wanted a 120hz TV to avoid that. Generally I get it, most companies double the native refresh rate and put something about motion next to it to fool people into thinking they are getting a deal and all you have to do is divide by 2 to get the native refresh rate. Well Sony has gone one step further and started multiplying the native refresh rate by 4 depending on the motion blur reduction tech they use. They've added 2 separate frame interpolation techniques in this model so they think it's ok to bump 60hz to "Motionflow 240", and most sites, including this one, are advertising it as a 120hz set. Sony's website do not mention the refresh rate at all and the only mention of a refresh rate in the manual says 60hz. Also the 1 star rating mentioning this earlier has mysteriously disappeared. Needless to say I'm very upset and will be returning it ASAP.

Sony may have made the best tube sets in the industry, but this certainly was a huge disappointment. All my tube tvs have been either Sony or Mitsubishi, and my 57 rear projection was a Sony. Picture quality was always good. When I switched to HDTVs, they have all been Samsungs (32, 39,46, and 55). I had high hopes for this Sony, but was shocked at how poor the picture and color quality was. Side by side comparison with a 4 yr old samsung 46 6100 series was surprising. We packed it up and took it back to BB the next morning and got another Samsung. Pic quality is so much better. I dould I will ever buy another Sony TV again.

I was under impression that this smart TV comes with a standard SONY applications that my friend had on their TV. Unfortunately, it comes with a very lousy set of application and the Opera application store doesn't have anything in it - it doesn't have amazon app, vudu, flixster. Should have bought a normal TV for half the price and buy a fire stick (like I had to do anyways to be able to use this TV - without a Cable subscription), which is now supplemented with chromecast. It still works without bigger problems thus 2 stars.

There is nothing wrong with this, but there is also nothing really right with it. The picture is fair, the sound is a little less than fair and the options are ok. If you need a tv it's an ok buy but if you really want a TV, you may want to play with it a little before buying

Hi Vikke, you may try to perform a power reset on the TV by: turning off the TV, remove it from the wall outlet and lest it stay for couple of minutes. Then re-plug the TV and turn it on again. In addition, you can also try to perform a factory reset on the TV by: pressing and holding the up arrow on the TV's remote, and press the power on button on the side of the TV. If done correctly, the TV will go turn off and turn on by itself and will perform the initial setup. You can just follow the on-screen instructions. Hope this helps. -ElySonystyle

Picture quality is below average. Dark colors show very poorly. After reading reviews of this tv elsewhere (not Best Buy), found that this is to be expected. Very disappointed after having several excellent Sony products over the years.

The price difference compared to the 630B is not worth the much poorer picture quality. Returned it for the 630B and glad I did.

I can see that this really upset you and we are sorry for that. There is a motionflow option under picture settings on this TV that provides smoother picture movement and reduces picture blur and you can check it on this link on page 37: https://docs.sony.com/release/KDL-60R510A.pdf - Jerome Sonystyle
