Quick review: fantastic picture quality (HDR looks great); color is accurate (skin tones look like skin tones); clarity and upscaling are still way ahead of Samsung/LG/Vizio. Like all thin tv's these days the speakers are weak; use with a sound bar!; use standard picture setting with "smooth" motion control and "ambient light control" settings turned OFF and the television is plenty bright for your living room; android operating system is a mixed bag and slower than LG's web os3. It works and is stable but I would've preferred something more akin to their PS4 OS. I've owned so many brands of televisions over the last 20 years it's embarrassing that we spend as much as we do on TV's but we have a large household and get the mileage out of them.
Long review: I've bought many brands of televisions over the last 20 years and though mainline review sources such as consumer reports are grading many of the Samsungs higher than Sony, real world usage is proving much better with the Sony's in our household. We now own 3 Sony televisions - this 65" 850D, 2015's 65" 810c and a 2007 40" LCD model KDL40SL130. I've owned several 50"+ screen panasonics (plasma turned out to have the shortest life), two Samsungs, two LG's and one Vizio. We have a large household (5 kids) so our tv's are heavily used. If you're a stickler for lifelike non-overblown non-oversaturated color, then Sony is the only way to go. Some people love cartoon looking overblown skin tones but I hate that look. Sony gets color and clarity right every time, even on their more basic TV's. This model has a beautifully color accurate picture that I saw couldn't be matched by even the Samsung KS9000 which was the step up from the KS8000 I was debating. You need to take your own USB video file and plug them into the televisions you're considering in the store to be able to compare the images side by side. For 1080p upscaling to 4K, Sony runs away with it. It's literally no contest. Colors are more lifelike and accurate and clarity is superior. The other area Sony excels in is motion - Not the "smooth" motion setting that makes everything look like a soap opera but sports and fast action motion that keeps blurring at a minimum. This TV has exceptional motion clarity. Virtually all review sources tout Sony's dominance here and that was my 2nd reason for going with another Sony. HDR is still a luxury and will be for another year as providers slowly start broadcasting with it. For 1080p upscaling to 4K, Sony is still the only way to go. Netflix and Amazon HDR shows look great on this TV. For everyday, all around movie, sports and gaming, this tv is the best one in the $1000-2000 price range.

I did my research before purchasing this TV. I bought it primarily for 4K HDR blu-rays. This TV exceeded my expectations. I had some concerns but I did not want to spend over $3,000. The picture quality is top notch.
So far, I've also used this TV for 4K netflix, amazon and youtube. Very little gaming, but it seems to perform well for both xbox one and PS4.
Android TV is fun and well done. My previous smart TV's were slow and clunky. I use multiple iOS devices and was concerned about compatibility issues. No issues so far. Other notable app's include PlayStation TV. (The TV syncs with a dual shock 4 controller, no additional accessories required.)
Wireless sub's sync with the TV as well to help improve audio. I already have a soundbar so I didn't spend much time with this feature.

On my 2nd set! SPOILER.... Major light bleed

Well I finally decided to give in and invest in a 4k TV. After reading many reviews and doing some research online, it came down to either the Samsung KS8000 or the Sony X850D. So I went to my local Best Buy/Magnolia and compared both sets in person. Both displays had AMAZING PQ! The color on the Sony was exquisite but the blacks on the Samsung were richer and darker and the panel is much brighter, yet the Sony runs on an Android platform. Both have terrific upscaling. Besides the not so great blacks on the Sony both TVs are on par with eachother. It was a really a tough choice. But in the end it all came down to brand preference and I decided to purchase the Sony 65" X850D on the count of me already owning an older Sony HDTV and PS4. Well, after installing the TV on a bright and sunny day and watching a couple of shows with the picture setting set to Vivid I was one happy camper! The picture quality was phenomenal, that is until it got dark. We began to watch a movie in native format (21:9) which gave us the letterbox display and boy was I shocked! I was greeted with light bleed and terrible clouding on 3 of the edges of the TV. Even after tinkering with the picture settings and lowering the brightness, the light bleed made watching the movie un-enjoyable. I thought to myself, "no problem this is probably just a bad set" I called Best Buy/Magnolia yesterday and they agreed they would exchange it for a brand new set of the same model. "Great", I thought. So I packed everything up, loaded the TV in my pickup and got my exchange taken care of. I get home to set up the new TV and as soon as I turn it on I notice the SAME ISSUE. Now, I understand this is an edge lit set so of course its going to be prone to some cloudiness, but this is insane. 1st pic (vertical) is of my 1st set, pre exchange and the 2nd pic is the new set updating out of the box

A lot of TV's have 4K and HDR. What makes this TV a great set is the android tv functionality, the smooth compatibility with a PS4, it's ability to upscale and show regular tv (non 4K content) well. All pictures look great, I have seen other sets that show regular 1080i content poorly and this tv does a great job. It responds quickly, has a great remote and has a healthy amount of picture adjustments. Another thing it does better than average is it's response time, very little blurring and great for fast gaming and sports. It's now 1599 and at that price it's the best tv you can buy. Negatives include very poor tv speaker sound and android tv doesn't work particularly well with an iPhone. I use to sell tv's for 10 years and Sony dipped in quality, although I feel this generation of Sony and this TV in particular is a VERY high quality set, although i do worry about the software holding up over time. Hopefully google and sony will keep software up to date in the future.

Got this TV after some research and mainly comparing Samsung and Sony. The Samsung 4K is good, but when viewed side by side I found the color rendering on the Sony better. The black levels are excellent and upscaling from standard Blu-ray to 4K is very good. Even normal cable TV broadcasts are impressive. Didn't feel the need to tweak the picture settings as the default settings out of the box were spot on and the picture was excellent. However, these settings can be changed depending on your personal choice. The motion flow is very smooth and did not see any judder especially while watching fast paced action such as car racing or even hockey. The audio is also good but if you need better it would be best to hook up to a home theater receiver or sound bar, The Andriod apps are well sorted and connecting to Netflix and Amazon Prime video are a breeze. The remote itself has a button for Netflix. Haven't noticed any light bleed which some reviews have mentioned. The remote is well laid out and is quick to respond although backlight would have been good. There is also voice command function where you can search shows by talking to the TV. Like all voice commands it is not perfect but you do get the desired result most of the time. There are enough HDMI inputs for connecting Blu-ray, gamebox and a streaming player. Like most electronics nowadays there is no detailed manual only a quick setup guide. If you need the manual you can download from Sony's website. Sony has really upped their game with these new range of 4K TVs after falling behind Samsung for a year or two. Although there is not much 4K content out there but this is the future standard of all TV broadcasts and investing in it right now is worthwhile. All in all, I am very happy with this TV and would definitely recommend it.

The picture quality is amazing and the TV has great features and functionality. Built in wifi is so great. No wires!. Great apps on the TV itself and many more I'm sure I haven't found. Setup for many apps is great because you can use your computer keyboard instead of the remote to hunt and peck.
The only cons I would mention are:
1. Need some instructions for all the new toys and tools on the TV
2. For a very expensive TV, the remote control is lacking. The two circles of control buttons around the select button are confusing. The microphone is great. Except where you need it. Sure, you can talk into it, but not at the most important time... enter your email and password. Just being able to call out letters and numbers would save so much time and pain.

I purchased this TV after returning a Sony 900C. I couldn't be happier. The picture is so clear, and realistic its almost unreal. The 900C had a light bleed issue. So please do your homework on these TV's before spending thousands to be disappointed. This one seems to be exactly what we were looking for, and more.

The XBR65X850D is the total package: tops at upscaling non 4K, excellent motion, great picture, and good contrast and blacks all for about half the cost of an OLED.
Read on if you want more details. I researched all the brands and for me it came down to the 3 Sony’s. The 850 has the Triluminos Display and the X1 Processor that the 750 does not. The 930 has slim backlight drive and X-Tended Dynamic Range Pro but was priced $600 higher for what I perceived as slight improvements. (For my use the 3D on the 930 would have been a waste.)
Some reviews mentioned bleeding and poor black levels on the 850 but I haven’t witnessed any shortcomings there. Sites like rtings and 4K were mostly positive but CNET’s assessment had me worried for no reason. (Color accuracy and motion clarity are more important to me than having deep blacks as I value color more than black and white!) Since we use an older surround sound system the internal speakers were not a factor.
Seldom have I been more pleased with a purchase as no one set has it all. But the 850 proved to be the best all around choice if you consider pricing in the equation.
3 week follow up - I will suggest the following:
1. If you haven’t done so, then upgrade the firmware from the Sony website.
2. Spend some time adjusting the picture settings to fine-tune to your liking.
(Afterwards I am even more impressed with this set as there are an amazing amount of tweaks available to address a high percentage of the issues some have mentioned like black levels, bleeding, motion jitter on “crawls” etc. Guests sometimes ask “what kind of tv is that?”)
I started with the “vivid” picture mode and reduced the color and sharpness values and turned off the noise reduction settings. Here’s my list:
brightness max, color 57, light sensor off, contrast max, gamma 0, black level 50, black adjust high, adv. contrast enhancer high, hue r2, color temperature cool, color space sRGB/BT.709, live color high, sharpness 50, reality creation auto, random noise reduction off, digital noise reduction off, motionflow clear, cinemotion off.
(fyi there is a “reset” on the menu if you wish to return to factory defaults.)

Quality is superb, with 4K content the television is truly a beauty. Have a Bose acoustimas 10 powered by a onxyo receiver. With 65 inches you definitely feel a theater like atmosphere. Tv is very thin and extremely light however I recommend two people when mounting and installing tv. The unique bracket from Sony is not compatible with this model. Save yourself time and purchase a thin wall mount at any retailer. I am extremely delighted with the tv, the perimeter around the tv is perfect and beautiful colors project throughout the whole television and is uniform. Have had it for two weeks watching normal time, power is continuous and cannot see any defect on the tv. Five stars! Purchased Amazon prime and Netflix for 4K content. YouTube as well. Cable tv only transmits 1080, tv has great upscale functionality.

This flatscreen has a great picture and when paired with a Sony soundbar gives a truly cinematic experience which we truly enjoy. We have not tried out true 4k, while we wait for new input devices, but the upscaling seems like a great substitute in the meantime. So while we will eventually upgrade to a 4k blu ray player, we are not put out while we put it off. The control functions are relatively intuitive, and provide a nice variety of options. However, some of the smart software is more geared toward android/chrome cast devices, and do translate well in our otherwise Apple household. Also the actual remote is a bit old school, with some difficulty with button layout (even after a month it makes it challenging to use accurately without looking directly at it.

Fantastic picture. I chose this over the 900 series Samsung due to the big advantage in motion rate. Color, picture quality are just as good if not better when compared side to side. The only thing the Samsung has on the Sony in my opinion is a better remote. I do own a couple of 40" 4K Samsung's which are awesome but that motion rate is huge for me as I watch a lot of sports.

I have only had this a couple days and I am in love all ready. I replaced a Bravia KDL-55W900A. I'm happy with the amount of apps available already. I find the black level and brightness to be superior to my previous tv. The brightness is almost annoying. Im excited for the integration with my connected devices that is coming with the android marshmallow update. My only complaint is that the remote sensor on the television is not as sensitive as on my previous tv. Im assuming its cause the sensor is smaller because the bezel is smaller.

I bought this at the recommendation of an associate. The positives he outlined were all true, so I will start them first. Here are the top ones:
1. Color on the set is stunning
2. Fast motion scenes are great
3. Set up is a breeze (menus can be a little confusing if you have to go back however after using them a few times navigation is no problem)
4. Features are far better than most on the market
5. WiFi connect and streaming
6. Price.
Now the minuses:
1. Black levels are horrid, particular in low level room lighting, brightly lit room its tolerable (Several call to Sony Tech support yielded only moderate improvement from out of the box settings). If you use CC and the letters are white it will adjust the backlight on dark screens to almost make the screen look as though it’s flashing once the letter appear.
2. Sound from the set speaker is pretty poor, will require a sound bar and this is where the real problem started for me see below
I purchase a mid-range Sony sound bar to pair with the TV. Hookup was simple using HDMI ARC. TV recognized the sound bar right away and switch tv speakers off and enable the output to the sound bar. After some adjustment to the setting on the sound bar everything functioned as excepted for about a week. Then the sound stopped coming from the sound bar. Long story short after 4 calls to Sony Tech support they could not identify the problem and would have me reset the TV and “monitor and see if the problem was resolved”. After the last and this happened ~ 6 times in 3 weeks I took the TV and sound bar back and replaced it with Samsung products.
Best buy was great on the return!

I purchased this tv along with a Sony sound bar right at a month ago and I have to say, this is a great tv. I looked at a lot of other brands before finally deciding on this Sony model. I considered cheaper budget models like vizio and even Samsung. Ultimately I decided on this TV because of the overall quality for the price.
That being said there are a couple minor cons on this TV: 1. The android operating system is a little buggy at times. Certain apps don't like to work at times, or I'll suddenly get booted out of Netflix in the middle of a show on occasion. I hope they manage to fix this with a software update in the future. 2. The remote is difficult to use in the dark. The buttons you use most are in the center of the remote but unfortunately they all kind of blend together. It would have been nice to have some type of tablet or touch pad included like a lot of the competitors along with the standard remote. 3. Smart functionality isn't quite up to par with set top smart boxes like the Apple TV. This kind of goes along with con number one, but I feel like android could have easily integrated better voice search functionality and easier to navigate menus into the system. Additionally, the number of apps is lacking compared to those available for the Apple TV for example.
However, the pros for this tv far outnumber the cons. 1. Deep blacks. For not being an OLED tv I'm very happy with how dark the blacks are (they may look slightly gray in a totally dark room, but with any light whatsoever they look perfectly black). 2. This tv doesn't suffer the lightbleed of last years model. 3. It's insanely thin! I was even more surprised with how thin it is after I got home than I was when I saw it in the store. 4. Thin bezels make the frame of the tv essentially disappear. 5. Plenty of hdmi inputs allow for connecting all the devices you'll ever need simultaneously, including a sound bar (which I highly recommend getting, as pretty much any new tv leaves a lot to be desired in that department anymore). 6. The high dynamic range really helps the colors pop. Again, while its not an OLED, it is still pretty impressive and I think it's a good way to save about $1,000 even tho OLED does look good.
So overall I am extremely satisfied with this tv. Can you buy better? Sure. But you're absolutely going to pay for it. Similar Samsung and LG tvs are quite a bit more expensive and even lack some of the features this tv has unless you're really going to splurge and go for an OLED.
This tv is also perfect for people who are cutting the cord on cable. I do not have cable thru my ISP and instead use PlayStation Vue, and the smart functionality on the tv would also make it great for other standalone network options.
If you're thinking about getting a new tv, I would definitely say it is worth spending the money and getting a Sony. This tv seems extremely well built and I am hoping it lasts several years to come!

We waited until we got the best pre-Christmas price and it was worth it. So far, this has been an excellent purchase. It was relatively easy to set up. For the most part, we have been using default settings for picture quality and they are quite good. I don't think I would go as far as to say the picture is stunning, but it is really excellent. There is a special sports watching mode that is very good for sports. The audio is as good as you are going to get with any TV. If audio is really important to you, get a sound bar. We are using Frontier cable with an HDMI connection and it seems to upscale quite nicely.
This is our first smart TV, and I've finally gotten around to checking out the services and apps, such as Netflix and YouTube and others. We are accessing them through our wireless network, which seems to be able to handle the streaming data (and was easy to set up). I don't know if a wired connection would help. I haven't tried it. But the quality of the 4K video streams is pretty awesome. I just wish there was more 4K content out there, especially for live sports. (There is an MLB TV app and I am hoping that some teams will decide to broadcast in 4K this year.) The android TV operating system is pretty easy to get used to. It takes a while to do updates, but you do them at your convenience.
In short, I believe this TV is worth the cost, especially the sale price you can get it for. The picture is excellent (including upscaling). The audio is OK. Features and Smart TV apps work well and are easy to use. I have not found anything that I do not like about this TV so far. I would recommend this set.

I used to be a big Sony fan back in the day when I bought my very first home CD player. Over the years competition has grown and there's many more choices. Samsung was on the top of my TV list when shopping for my newest tv based on my experiences with my last tv (I still have and use that Samsung in my daughter's bedroom, and it's ten years old!) After spending a couple months researching and reading anything I could get my eyes on, i narrowed it down to 4 choices and went to check them out physically at Best Buy. Fortunately for me, the lady who helped me was very knowledgeable and as enthusiastic about tech as i was. Bottom line, the Sony filled all my requirements. 4k with HDR, great general purpose HD viewing quality, competitive pricing, and relatively easy user interface. I stream everything so it needed to function well in that capacity and across a wide range. I also gave the overall appearance of the tv design some consideration as well since it would be the centerpiece in my livingroom. Sony was a close 2nd in that aspect but not a deal breaker. I do like the small gloss gray center mount base a lot and it doubles as a cable/cord routing/hiding solution.
In the end Sony won and because my sales person was on her game, she price matched the tv for me. I didn't even know the Sony was on sale and that it was cheaper from another vendor!! I have no complaints so far and I have watched content from SD all the way to 4K HDR. The speakers are pretty good for general use, but I will be upgrading the sound system to more adequately match the 4K HDR experience

Love the Tv, So thin and sleek. Picture is wonderful, but the blacks aren't quite as true as I'd like. Also there is some light bleed when it's very dark in the room, not a lot, but some.
