Less than a year after purchase, displayed a vertical prismatic artifact. Worked through Sony’s forums to diagnose and fix the issue with no success reached out to Sony support and they suggested a myriad of settings fixes, none of which corrected the problem. Finally they confirmed the TV’s panel is defective. Since by this point the TV is out of warranty (by about 6 weeks), they offered a discount on a replacement Sony product. Cost to replace the TV after the discount? A little over $1000, plus tax. Needless to say, I won’t be taking Sony up on the offer. Nor will I ever buy any Sony product again.

DISCLAIMER:
I am a Samsung TV fan and every TV in my house is a Samsung 1080P mid level to higher range flat screens. I use Xfinity as my TV source (XG1V4 box), Apple TV 4K, Fire TV 4K and a PS4 Pro for gaming.
I am new to the 4K TV market and needed help in deciding which one to buy. I tend to do my own research online and via YouTube before going out to look at a new TV. I wasn't looking for a TV with Dolby Vision, I just wanted a 4K TV. The Best Buy associate who helped me kept mentioning the benefit of a TV with DV over one that doesn't have it. I also asked to keep the price in the $1200 range (remodeling living room and will be purchasing a 82-85" TV later). I was pointed to an LG, Samsung and of course this Sony TV. The Samsung was the only one of the three that does not offer DV, but still looked sharp to me. In any event here is my review.
LOOKS:
This TV is very aesthetically pleasing to look at. The bezels are thin and I actually like the way the two stands (or feet?) kick out to the edge (you can have them facing in if your TV stand isn't wide enough). Each stand (or foot if you will) has a cable run to hide your cables (easier to hide each cable for a neater look). I have a SONY HTX9000F soundbar in between the stand and it looks nice. The materials that this TV is made from appear solid and should last some years to come.
OPERATING SYSTEM (OS)
I am going to be honest and tell you that I have never liked ANY of the operating systems on a TV. I don't use them for apps, I would much rather use a Fire Stick and the like for apps. I am also not an Android user (been on iPhone for years after owning Google and Samsung phones) so I am honestly going to be harsh with Sony's android TV experience. I am on VERSION 8.0 (OREO) and just before writing this checked to see if there was an update and there was not. I find the OS on this TV to be sluggish (or laggy if you will) with version 8.0. It was worse prior to the updating to 8.0, so I don't know what they changed, but it did perk up response time dramatically. I just feel like there is too much bloatware on this TV. I have read online that you can clean up the overall feel and speed if your ready to delete and enable developer mode (similar to a Samsung phone from my experience). Why should I have to do this to make the OS on this TV easier to use and enjoy? Is this just the android experience on a Sony TV? In any event I don't like it and do not recommend using it for any apps.
PICTURE SETTINGS:
I haven't had a TV professionally calibrated since I owned my Pioneer Elite Plasma TV from Magnolia YEARS ago (I miss that TV so much!) Every TV I have owned I have calibrated myself via Blue-ray discs programs. As of recent web sites like flatpanelsHD and rtings.com have some nice settings to get you going. So for this TV I have tried SEVERAL settings to try and get the best picture possible. I am 50/50 for the quality of picture on all HDMI ports. Each HDMI port needs to be configured separately from each other (meaning you have to go through every picture setting for each individual input). This is my current setup via the 4 HDMI inputs:
HDMI 1 - PS4 Pro
HDMI 2 - Apple TV 4K
HDMI 3 (ARC) - Sony HTX9000F Sound Bar for the ARC (Audio Return Channel) as recommended by Sony and the Best Buy Associate. NOTE: Xfinity XG1V4 is on the input HDMI port of the sound bar
HDMI 4 - Fire Stick 4K
According to SONY HDMI ports 2 & 3 are the only ports that support high-bandwidth sources like a Blue-Ray player or a PS4 Pro (and devices that support 4K HDR and DV - Dolby Vision).
So that brings me to the "highly sold" Dolby Vision feature of this TV to me. As it was explained to me, it would bring any movie or show to "life" with a realism that no other LED TV could bring. Samsung doesn't offer Dolby Vision and the the other TV in this price range was the LG and it offered DV. Out of the box watching any movie that is capable of Dolby Vision is to bright and has a very bad blooming effect. I have set LOCAL DIMMING from LOW to HIGH and found that the middle ground for me is on MEDIUM. It's a better balance of keeping black levels just right (as best as they can) and keeping highlights as close to good when viewing fast motion scenes. This is the case for me on every input as well (just not on DV). Watching 4K content on Apple TV or the Fire Stick gave me the same result. I literally have to play with DIMMING SETTINGS for each input and for every show I watch.
I don't think that I will be able to get rid of the blooming effect on this TV and after reading numerous forums, there are quite a few mentions of this. The typical answer tends to be you have to live with it or get an OLED TV instead. Counterpoint is brightness on this TV is incredible!!!!! If you go to YouTube and search for 4K content video, watch a few that are set in bright tropical areas (snakes, birds and water scenes), and it will knock you off your feet! This is what I was shown in the store and is what sold me on this set. This is why I said I was 50/50 on the picture quality. Bright scenes are incredible but dark scenes (picture a scene with a moon and stars in a night sky, the area around the moon will be washed out in white - blooming effect).
As far as regular TV viewing is concerned, I have had to set my Xfinity box to 1080P 60 HD. If I set the box to 4K the picture gets very grainy and boxy (pixelated). This is an Xfinity issue and not a Sony issue. The TV will upscale the signal it receives and when you set the Xfinity box to 4K, it is pure garbage. I wanted to throw that in in case anyone is using the same box I have from Xfinity and put it to 4K. And yes I have new 4K HDCP 2.2 HDMI cables and this does not make the Xfinity picture quality any better. I believe that even today Xfinity is for the most part only giving us 720P broadcast anyway. I think DirecTV may be the only provider that gives you true 1080P and 4K. Just an FYI...
OVERALL IMPRESSION:
If I had to rate this on a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being the worst and 10 the best), I would give it a 7.5. I may have expected more from a a sub $1500 TV (I paid $1099.99). I would recommend this as a secondary TV and not something that I would care to watch everyday. This TV will go to my oldest son and he will be thrilled. We are ready to purchase an 82-85 inch screen now. I don't know if the new Sony X950H is a better improvement over this model I have now or even the X950G. Issue is I can't go to the store to see one of the Sony's I mentioned with everything being shut down. Samsung just released their new line for 2020 and they look nice online as well. I don't know if my issue is how my TV handles DV and 4K over a newer set from Sony. I may be going back to Samsung. Best Buy claims they will deliver to my doorstep, so I may have to take a chance and buy the new Samsung Q series sight unseen.

I was deciding between the Samsung Q90r, Q80R, Q70R with the last being the most likely. I was also considering the Sony X900F and the X950F. Last one was the Vizio P-series. Rtings.com ratings, and the research i did in other places, agreed that the Sonys had better or equivalent picture by what I value. The newer/more expensive versions are a bit better.
The question came down to was the best value. Could I see in the store the differences that Rtings showed. My heart was set on the Samsung Q70R. I should point out that all of these TVs are great. The 70R, in the store, just looked noticeably dimmer than the others, and the colors looked a bit less vibrant compared to the others. The other TVs on the list, aside from the Visio which was not there, looked about the same. I could not appreciably tell the difference based on the advertising video they had on teh screens. That aligned with all the reviews that I read. Thus, it made sense to buy this one.
Some key facts, my room I watch is in a longer, comparatively narrow room that gets a large amount of light from many windows during the day. I love sci fi and want deep blacks. I am against OLED due to my burn in concerns, but those tvs do look better.
I bought the 65" version of this tv. It replaced a 9 year old Vizio 55" tv that died a few days ago. I went up to 65" because I wanted 4k and the optimal viewing range for 4k 65" tv is about the same as a 1080p 55"; my prime viewing spot is about 10' from the screen.
I setup the new tv in front of the wall mounted dead one, and wow is this thing a lot bigger. That 10 inches makes a big difference. (I wanted to test the new one and make sure it was not damaged nor DOA before I mount it. I have friends coming over in a few days to help me take the old one down and mount the new one.)
The other tv in my home is a 2 year old Samsung 4k tv that I regularly view content on in 1080p and 4k.
We are cord cutters, and I tried Amazon Video at 4k/2k, Netflix at 4k/2k. I also tried them, watching Sling tv (baseball) and a few other shows at 1080p. I also tried some other youtube video at various formats. They all looked great, and obviously much better than the 10 year old tv it replaced or my other 4k tv. The lower quality stuff looked less good, but that is to be expected. Specifically, the youtube stuff at lower quality looks less bad on this TV than the others.
I also tried casting some home videos (2k) of my kiddo from my phone. That was very easy.
Setup stuff:
It was great to setup the phone in general to tie it to my google accounts for ease of registration, configuration, etc. This process was easier and better than other apps. The fact that you can use the android remote means i can type passwords on my phone rather than using the remote. This is much faster using our various streaming apps.
Interface. I do not see yet, I may not have found it yet, but searching across multiple sources like you can do in Roku easily is not easy here. That is the primary feature I like with Roku. Also moving apps around to prioritize the ones I like I can do in other tvs/apps. I suspect I need more time.
I used the RTings.com suggestions to tune the image, and it did look better, but not significantly.

I initially purchased the X850F and I am totally blown away by how much of a difference there is between that TV and the 900.
There are not enough words of praise that can be spoken about this TV’s image quality.
I bought it pretty much exclusively for my PS4 Pro and every day I’m blown away.
The local dimming is what makes it great, nice deep blacks against bright vivid colors. If you’re looking for a TV to game on, get this one.
Oh, Netflix and Hulu and all that look amazing too I guess.
*The black attached image is of a loading screen in a dark room. Almost zero blooming with a nice bright center image against almost perfect black.

Brilliant color, easy set up, plenty of options for watching streaming services are a few of the features that I like about this model. Crystal clear picture and very low glare/reflectioin are super bonus' for me due to location of the tv(directly across from a west facing window). Overall this is the best TV I have tried, other than the LG B8 that is the best TV I've owned. I purchased this for my living room for overall viewing and gaming for the family. The 900X I really like for the price point because it comes with Full-array dimming so it produces excellent darks and contrast especially with HDR content. I haven't had any blooming issues even though some reviewers complain about this. No vertical banding, no blooming, picture is sharp and colors pop. I tweaked my settings a bit that has a general good use bouncing from sports and Netflix but that is so subjective I don't know if posting my settings will matter. But If you watch Sports, I would recommend starting with the Sports preset and tweak some of the motion settings. It is on high from the start but gives it an odd ghosting/soap opera effect trying to keep up with motion. I changed most to low or medium and full array dimiming settings to medium. Changed color to warm and turned brightness down to 35 and picture looks really good. When HDR content comes on it seems to adjust settings automatically which is pretty normal for most TVs but I'm sure there is a way to set this to manual, haven't figured that out yet. My only complaint is the interface. Seems rather sluggish and messy. The remote seems sluggish compared to newer Samsungs or LGs that I've tried. The buttons I hate. They have that old school soft button like dialing on an old cordless phone where you have to press with some force before anything happens or feel any feedback. The Tizen interface with Samsung has had some complaints but it's snappy and simple. Very easy to use. The Google assistant on this doesn't work that great. The general picture settings are a bit confusing if you have never used, which I haven't so some settings I don't know exactly what they do as they are Sony's version of some motion or dimming setting. I had to look a lot up. Again, if you are new to Sony as I am, the interface might seem a little clunky and unclear, but once you get settings dialed in, for $1600 on the 65 inch, I feel this compares to the Samsung Q8F which is at least $500 or more and this picture might even be better when I compared. Very happy overall as I use my Roku Ultra so using the built interface isn't that big of a deal. Also I returned the Samsung 65RU8000 for this TV. This picture has brighter HDR and SDR content and produces better blacks and consistent contrast. Colors seem more realistic display shadows well. The Samsung had some dead pixel or veritical banding issue right down the middle of the screen that caused me to return it. Could have been a fluke. But I was already on the fence with the picture and even though this was $500 more than the sell price of the RU8000, it has been worth it so far. Ultimately, the picture is great. Which is what you pay for. The interface I don't use much and the remote I won't use much. If I was going to and not use Roku, that would probably be annoying enough that I would consider returning.

I researched this the x900f fairly thoroughly before purchasing on Black Friday. While I had planned on going with the Vizio PQ65, but was concerned with quality control (heard people had to return the units a few times before hitting one free from defects) and availability.
Pros:
Overall, very satisfied with the 65" x900f. It gets extremely bright (almost eye searing if you set it to max), produces excellent colors, and handles motion very well, particularly via Xbox One X and PS4 Pro. HDR games are just shy of amazing on this set. For the vast majority of content, it's really tough to beat the picture and motion quality of the x900f, short of OLED (which isn't an option for me, with the risk of burn in).
Cons:
There's distinct clouding present when extra bright images are contrasted against black backgrounds. This can be mitigated drastically through processing (turn the backlighting array to max) and reducing the overall brightness (drastically) when viewing in dimmed or dark ambient light. This is less of an issue with HDR material, as the set changes the contrast to accommodate the signal.
As for HDR, most content is a pleasure to watch. Dolby Vision, however, seems to have some issues with base brightness that I can't quite correct. Hopefully, a firmware update will fix this issue, as Vision should produce the best HDR picture.
The built in speakers are serviceable, but I immediately switched to my receiver and bookshelf speakers.
Android TV is... ok. It gets the job done, but apps (including the settings menu) take entirely too long to load. While I can use the Xbox for streaming, it's a pain to switch from game mode everytime I want to watch Netflix or HBO Go.
Also, be aware, there's no way to copy picture settings from one input (or App) to another. It's a minor frustration, but given how slow the menus load, it bears mentioning.
Summary:
That being said, I really do like the x900f. While I wish there was no clouding with the brightness cranked up, the problem is somewhat inherent to LCD TVs, even with full array backlighting.

After 11 years of owning my previous smart TV, I finally made the plunge to 4K. I stopped at the local Eagan store and had a general idea of what I wanted but was still not sold on which unit to get so I asked for expert opinions. They showed me a few models such as the MU8000 and A8F to name a couple as well as this TV. I watch a lot of movies and game fairly frequently so I wanted something that doesn't burn in like OLED can and handles motion well. Needless to say, I am impressed!
The setup was painless. I just turned it on and it asked for my WiFi where it needed to then do a system update (it is an Android TV). This may take awhile, however, as it is a large update of several GB depending on your internet speeds. Then you can set up Google Assistant along with other promotional offers should you choose to, but that can be skipped.
Once set up, the TV itself is fantastic. The black levels are very deep and it gets very bright! I have 3 windows in my living room and I still can see the TV set just fine. However, I turned the automatic brightness off in the settings as cloud transitions was enough to adjust the TV and it was a little excessive. Motion is great and you can read everything even if it is a fast scene as it uses the same processor as the A8F with the new X-Motion clarity video processing. If you may notice the TV image quality reduce as you move farther to the sides of the TV at a wide angle. After doing some research online I found that this was due to the TV being a VA panel compared to an IPS panel. The TV is HDR compliant with HDR-10 as well as Dolby Vision after a software update. It does come with a Chromecast built in, so you can use any enabled device to broadcast to the tv if you wish to.
Gaming with the TV is great, minimal input lag. However, if you game in 4K you will need to enable HDMI to be enhanced otherwise you may not get the full experience.
The two speakers that are built into the TV are small. I needed to get a soundbar with it so I could hear everything clearly particularly when the scene has a wide range of audio normally such as voices and music together.
Measure your stand width before you buy the TV. The legs are separated so you will want to make sure the TV has enough room to sit to avoid it tipping over.
Overall I am extremely impressed. Well done, Sony.

I bought this TV on Black Friday due to its price and picture quality. It checks all the feature boxes I was interested in: Dolby Vision, FALD (full array local dimming), a true 120HZ panel, and as an added bonus supports passing Dolby Atmos to my receiver over the HDMI ARC connection from apps such as Netflix and Amazon Prime. My parents have an LG OLED and the picture quality is still not as good as that but the OLED also cost $1000 more. The Dolby Vision and HDR10 look great on this and the FALD works pretty well to achieve good black levels. I have mixed feeling about the Android TV operating system on it. I like that it offers a huge assortment of different apps and seems very flexible; however, it seems to run slower that other TV OS's I've used. It's not extremely responsive when you press the buttons on the remote and has a decent amount of lag when navigating it. I'm not sure if that's Sony's fault due to hardware limitations or how Android TV is on all devices. I was more interested in picture quality than the smart TV system so I was willing to sacrifice that and just use an Apple TV or Xbox for apps. Gaming on my Xbox One X also looks amazing. Also up- conversion from 720p and 1080p signals looks much better than other cheaper TV's I've seen. Overall I would recommend this TV if you are looking for a mid-range TV with a great picture and features.

Plasma TV replacement

When my 10 year old Panasonic plasma TV died, I chose this Sony XBR900F TV as a replacement. At first I wasn't blown away by the picture quality. The picture settings from Sony did not look good. I struggled to find the correct settings for my room. There are about 6 different recommend picture settings for this TV on the internet. I tried them all but found the settings from Flatpanels website to be the best for my TV and room.
I have the TV hooked up to an Xfinity cable box that upscales content to 4K and a Sony X700 Bluray. The picture quality is amazing picture from these sources. Also streaming apps in 4K HDR look better than any TV I have ever owned.
If you are like me in not wanting to spend $1000 more for an OLED that may have burn in issues, then this is the TV for you.

The Sony 65” LED tv was exactly what I was looking for. Picture is clear and sharp and the color is true to life - just pops off the screen. Easy to set up and to choose your picture mode - I watch a lot of sports, so I have mine set to sports mode. Picture and color quality is great from any angle and in bright or dark rooms. I have mine hooked up to a Sonus sound bar and to Alexa. Easy to use remote or I can use my cable remote to access all actions. This TV replaced a top of the line 50” Pioneer Plasma purchased 15 years ago which was still working well, but the new LED TVs pictures can’t be beat.

As a bonus, if you watch The Crown on Netflix, you'll notice this TV and every other one that runs Dolby Picture will somehow darken the show to nearly unwatchable levels. So, here's a trick: Turn your Gamma all the way up on that show only. Or, just watch it through your cable box's Netflix app, which won't allow Dolby to run since the cable box doesn't support Dolby.
