Bright amber LED cannot be turned off

The TV is okay, but a single annoying detail ruins the whole user experience. When "OK Google" is disabled, the bright amber LED stays permanently on, which is especially irritating when watching TV in a dark room (see the picture attached). The LED cannot be disabled with the dedicated control in the menu: Settings - Device Preferences - LED indicator - Built-in MIC LED - Off. It's a bug to me, but not to the Sony engineers. They believe that Google needs to be always listening. Otherwise, the user must be punished with a bright warning light. Cannot recommend the product to anyone, but truly devoted Google fans.

    White Flickering Horizontal Lines

    |

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I had the TV for only about 13 days and suddenly there were white horizontal lines all throughout the screen that were flickering non stop. The TV was only plugged into the wall and we were watching streaming apps from the home screen app. So we know it wasn't because of any cables. The TV was returned and exchanged for another one (same brand, model, and size). The second new TV we've only had for 2 days now and we already see the flickering white horizontal line but this time at the top of the screen mainly on the right side. We're waiting to see if this gets worse or better, but only have about 14 days to make another return. I find it very disturbing that two of these TV's have the same issue and I have no idea what the problem is or what's causing it. But for 2 TV's to have it is not a very good sign. I'm shocked I haven't seen anyone else having the same problem. If I have to return this second TV I'm not going to buy Sony TV's anymore nor recommend them.

      Hi Sonytv,

Thank you for taking the time to review your X950H. We’re sorry to hear you are experiencing some display issues. We’d love to help you troubleshoot your problem by isolating your sources and understanding your connections. Some of these issues can be fixed by simply restarting the TV. To do that, simply press the power button for about 5-10 secs while the TV is on.

Verify if the issue occurs on other channels and other video sources eg. Cable box, Signal Channels, Blu-ray Player, PlayStation, or any other external input. Follow the steps below to isolate and fix this issue.

Press the HOME button on the remote to display the BRAVIA TV menu screen. If the menu screen has the same problem, your TV may have a malfunction. If the menu screen does not have the same problem, it is not a malfunction. Verify the connections. You can also change the picture settings to suit your tastes. You can configure various settings related to the TV display such as color and brightness for picture quality that suit to your liking.

Picture is good. Not worth the money. No HDMI 2.1 no variable refresh rate. Does 120 Hz for all resolutions but 4K. Can only do 4K at 60 Hz. Stay away from Sony products not worth the headache. This TV has a bug an orange light comes on and it won’t shut off. It’s distracting and if you reset the TV it goes away but wait, it comes back. So you have to look at this orange dot no matter what. Sony support is a joke. Can’t figure out how they can’t send a firmware update to fix this. Buy Samsung, you trade Dolby Vision for HDR+. Dolby Vision is a little better than HDR+. Most people can’t see the difference.

Hi there, thank you for choosing and purchasing our 65" X950H 4k UHD TV. While we are glad to hear that you like the picture quality, we are sorry to hear that the TV did not meet all of your expectations. We would like to troubleshoot the issue and make this a better experience for you. For the HDMI 2.1, there is much confusion about the HDMI versions and concerns about compatibility. For this reason, we do not promote the HDMI versions incorporated on many of our products. Instead, we advertise the features of a product that are associated with a particular HDMI version. The only HDMI 2.1 feature supported by this model is eARC. For expanded features like 4K 120hz, VRR and ALLM, please check our X900H. You may also consider the Z8H for 4k 120hz. Please check our related article https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/articles/00246472 for more information.

For the orange light indicator on the TV. Please follow these steps to try and turn off the light indicator.

On the supplied remote, press the HOME button.

      Select Settings.

The next steps will depend on your TV menu options:

Select Device Preferences → LED Indicator → Operational response or Illumination LED → Off.

Select Device Preferences → Illumination LED → Off.

Select LED Indicator → Illumination LED → Illumination LED → Off.

Greatness without the OLED Price tag

I’ve owned and been greatly enjoying the Sony X950H for a few weeks now. I’m happy to report this is a fantastic tv! The over all design is classy and premium. A very thin brushed dark metal frames the display. The feet stands for placement on a entertainment cabinet are made from a similar material and are quite heavy duty and attractive. Though I chose to go with wall mounting the tv. (Nice solution for installing the mounting bolts BYW) Now all that is for not if the display isn’t up to snuff. Thankfully the X950H very much is and then some. This display renders deep inky blacks, and bright whites, the contrast is simply fantastic. (Sure OLED is a better, but price and class considered, not by much) The colors are deep and saturated and really pop. Sony’s reputation for color accuracy precedes it and does not disappoint here. Find some Dolby vision content and forget about it, your not leaving the house tonight. Really impressed with that tech for HDR content. There are all kinds of bells and whistles in the settings and I’ve had fun toying around with them. But honestly this tv is the best I’ve scene as far as calibration out of the box goes. I do a fare bit of gaming and this tv preforms admirably. A lot of core gamers are focused on HDMI 2.1 lately. This set only supports 2.0. Personally, I’m not concerned with 2.1 as it’s gives you the ability to play at 4K 120 FPS. Rather than the 4K 60FPS the X950H is capable of. I not a big competitive online player. I play mostly single player story action-adventure titles and RPG’s. So visuals are most important to me. And these games look fantastic. I’m currently playing Ghost of Tsushima. Compared to my loaner 3 yr old Samsung UHD with no HDR. I might as well have jumped a generation in hard ware, visual wise. Seriously impressive! (The loaner replaced a 2020 Samsung Q70R that had a whole-to-do with a crack in the display and warranty complications that led me to this SONY TV) I only bring that up because I’ve been able to compare 3 mid to mid-high tier 4K TVs this year and this is easily my favorite. Now quickly, android tv works nicely. Some people seem to not like it. I like it. It preforms well. I use 4K Apple TV a lot anyway. The only slightly negative remark I would give the X950H is the sound, while definitely pretty good and better than most TVs by a long shot, I was expecting better. The aforementioned Samsung Q70R had really great and surprisingly deep sound out of the box. So I suppose I thought the X950H would meet or beat it as described in promotional materials, and even some reviews. But it falls shy of that mark not drastically but still shy. We have a baby in a small house so it’ll be a few years before I’m thumping a sound bar... In closing this is a great TV to consider for cinephiles and gamers that aren’t concerned with 120 FPS. Thanks.

Purchase 12/31/2020. By 2/11/2021 it was no longer functional. The TV would turn on, goto the Android logo and the turn off. I used Sony reset method of holding down power bottom, and plugging it in. The TV reset and would turn on, and then turn off on the select language screen. It’s annoying to dismount the 65” TV, swap it out with a replacement. A Sony TV should last more than 2 and 1/2 months.

The picture quality on this television is superb! Viewing angle is great from any spot in my living room, and the colors and contrast look great even in semi-bright sunlight. The sound is surprisingly good for a thin panel TV as well. The stand/legs are a bit strange to assemble and install, but they work well. I am a cord cutter so I use an external antenna and the tuner works great in my area (close to 50 channels received with non-amplified antenna), and my 4k sources (Apple TV and PS4) look absolutely brilliant! My biggest issue with the unit is that the user interface is very Google-centric making setup overly complicated (and a bit intrusive). My recommendation to Sony is to provide a simple setup option that bypasses all of the Google stuff completely. Other than that, I am thoroughly enjoying my purchase!

A MAJOR upgrade Thanks To The Geek Squad

We recently got this TV because of an exchange via Geek Squad warranty. We previously had a 2017 LG 4K HDR LED TV. We always felt our older 1080p Samsung LED TV looked better. The LG had poor local dimming and not that bright or color accurate. HDR looked ok, Dolby vision looked terribly dark on that LG on Netflix. Thankfully that LG failed due to bad banding on the tv, Ethernet port stopped working AND one of the HDMI ports seemed to flicker to a black screen when ever it wanted to. Our LCD panel was deemed defective and we were offered a replacement. So after doing thorough research I settled on either the Sony 950H or the Samsung Q80T for our replacement and price point. We have always had Samsung TVs, we tried an LG for once and it failed. I’ve researched that most of LGs current LED TVs are not that great compared to the competition. Yes OLED is great but we are talking LED here. We’ve never owned a Sony so we decided to use the store credit on the Sony 950H. I was a bit worried because we are at the top of the year. We all know new 2021 TVs are on the horizon but they aren’t expected for months. We needed a tv right away soooo we did what we had to. I’m familiar with Android TV being I own an Nvidia Shield and this TV is basically that. The setup was easy and after you’ve signed in and it loads the android tv logo I was a bit scared at first because I saw blooming all over the screen with a black background. However I read somewhere local dimming isn’t enabled at this point. Then a SONY splash screen played that showed some canyons in HDR and I was like holy ****!!! It looked so good. I immediately went to youtube to play some HDR content and maaaaannnnn the color was so vivid the blacks were soooooo black and it was such a bright image it blew our previous LG out of the water. Very VERY little blooming even in a dark room. It was staggering how much better this tv looked than our LG LED that was replaced. That’s with no calibration, no fiddling around with the settings. Just straight out of the box Standard Mode. Absolutely breathtaking image. We watched our directv and even it looked a lot better. The Directv genie works very well with Sony TVs. The Sony remote can control the box easily you don’t even need the directv remote. 1080p content upscaled showed a vast improvement thanks to the X1 extreme chip. We watched Sinister with the lights off. This movie has a lot of dark scenes and the blacks were so black. Not that milky black look with the obvious weak local dimming our LG had. This was very black on this TV. HDR and Dolby vision picture quality just was stunning and bright I can’t say it enough. So we were happy with our purchase and we happily bought another 5 year warranty with Best Buy. Had we not had it we would be stuck with our older LG or would have to pay full price for a new tv. If I had one negative thing to say it would be the tv didn’t play that nice with our Samsung sound bar. Yes it works over eARC/HDMI but when you hold the volume button up or down the numbers on the TV and sound bar gets out of sync with each other. This is a known issue. 2 things you can do... as long as you press the up or down button each time and not hold it down the numbers will stay in sync. If they get out of sync with each other just press MUTE then unmute and they will match again. The sound is louder and richer than it was with the same sound bar with the LG though.

This is a great TV with good contrast and brightness. It's a middle range tv and you get expecting what you pay for. It's noticably better than cheaper tvs, but it isn't going to be as good as the more expensive options either. It's certainly well worth the money. I have no "dirty screen" effects which is great when watching hockey or shows with a lot of white scenes. The corners are a little darker than the rest of the screen, but we are taking about the extreme corners (1"). Gamers may be disappointed that it didn't offer all of the features in HDMI 2.1 like VRR, but I certainly could care less about it. I'm extremely happy with my choice and would buy it again.

I purchased the 65" version of this TV to upgrade the 55" Sony X900F I purchased 2 years ago (finally was able to accommodate a larger TV). So far I am extremely pleased with the quality of this TV. There are subtle improvements to the software as well as picture quality over my X900F. The reason I went with Sony again over Samsung, TCL, or LG was the consistency and quality I have experienced with their televisions over the years, and the X950H takes it to another level. Software: The Android TV interface is very responsive and the WIFI connectivity has provided minimal buffering for streaming 4K movies on Netflix and Prime. The interface is arguably the most fluid compared to the competitors offerings (i.e. Tizen, WebOS). One thing I would like to see is a improvement to the settings menu. There is a quick menu that displays at the bottom of the screen for basic adjustments and it's configurable however I would like to see a button on the remote that would take you directly to the full settings menu. Display: The one thing I love about Sony TVs is their algorithms they use for their panels. In my opinion, they tend to have a good balance of accuracy as well as vibrancy right out of the box. One thing I disliked about the X900F (old TV) was how dark the display would get when displaying Dolby Vision, and I'm pleased to say the X950H does not have that problem. HDR content displays as it should with bright highlights and detailed shadows. Motion processing is also another feature that Sony seems to excel at. This TV handles motion fantastically and doesn't give you any sort of perceivable "soap opera effect". Sony has also improved the full array backlighting on this TV so there is minimal blooming around bright objects in dark scenes, though it is still there if you look hard enough or watch TV with the lights off. Panel uniformity has also been one of the strong points of Sony TVs. There is no banding or "dirty screen effect" that I have witnessed on this TV but there is a slight vignette near the corners (pretty much expected with modern LCDs). Sound: I haven't spent too much time using the built in speakers but the little experience I do have with them is pretty positive. They seem to have good depth and are well above average for TV speakers. Sony even provides a function to calibrate/optimize the speaker's output to you're rooms shape and size. Remote: Sony's remotes have generally been pretty basic, and this TV's remote is no exception. But in all honesty that's not necessarily a bad thing. As mentioned before the remote has a microphone in it for sound optimization and you can also speak into it for the built in Google Assistant. Verdict: If you want a solid TV that is very good all-around this is it. The "panel lottery" is a non-issue with Sony TVs and the quality is exceptional. The display may not be as punchy as the QLED Samsung TVs but in my opinion Samsung tends to favor vibrancy over accuracy.

I did a ton of research before this purchase...and glad I did! The Sony X950h is a beautiful TV with an amazing picture color and quality (excellent color accuracy right out of the box without having to do any calibration.) it's an excellent TV at this price point, for what you're getting! It has amazing contrast and sound, and is definitely their best 4K LCD TVs; with high peak brightness and impressive color gamut. The enhanced contrast and really slim bezel design provides great viewing from any angle. With sound and picture precisely aligned, you'll hear action from exactly the right place on screen. Though, I would definitely recommend adding a 5.1 soundbar and subwoofer to get the best movie watching experience. The Android TV OS is amazingly easy to use too. And setup was intuitive and a breeze. I definitely recommend this beautiful TV!

This set has the potential to be one of the top sets of the year so far based on picture quality. I came to this set from a LG C9 and there have been much improvements I've noticed coming to the X950H. First, the sharpness of the picture is much better. On the LG, while it generally looked good, textures and edges especially when gaming tended to look a bit smoother than they should. On the X950H, these are pinpoint sharp and I can see all the detail such as the granules on the road in Gran Turismo or the texture of fabric in RE3 remake. Contrast wise, while no LCD tv can stand up to OLEDs black level the X950H isn't caught out at all. There's a bit more shadow detail on offer than with the C9 (which trying to fix without WB controls and just raising black level is not feasible without raising the black level to where it is a bit gray). It also tends to seem a bit more natural as well. The C9 tends to seem a bit more "poppy" with everything super saturated and bright. The Sony looks to reserve the brightness for highlight areas while keeping things such as a night sky dark. This is likely due to the different time mapping implementations but I find the Sony approach to look more natural and pleasing. Going on to the color processing and motion, Sony is top notch at this as well. The Sony's smooth gradation feature is more effective than LG's at smoothing out color banding even at its lowest setting. Motion is also very good on the set with less choppiness or stuttering than the LG C9 even with motionflow turned off or to its lowest setting with X-motion clarity taking that up a notch to a really clean and clear picture. The x wide angle is very good at providing great off axis performance as well, without the huge contrast performance hit of earlier implementations. I also feel that the x wide angle is making the appearance of blooming less perceivable as it is equalizing the black level across the screen. Android TV is much improved over previous implementations (UI is slick and clean and hasn't crashed yet so far). I also love the variety of apps in the play store and the Chromecast built in so I can just cast videos from websites. Android TV to meet is a much better OS than WebOS. It's not all good news though in regards to the sound when connected to a soundbar. When watching through internal tv apps, there seems to be a bit of a delay when starting up a video before the sound comes in so if you pause and resume you may miss the first few seconds. There also appears to be some random 1 sec audio drop outs at times, which I'm not sure if is caused by eARC syncing or not but I'm optimistic it will be fixed in future updates. Overall, so far it seems like a terrific set and while I can't say it will be the best set in 2020, I can say it should definitely be on your list of TV's to look out for.
